Pink Floyd - Reflections & Echoes (2006) ReviewWith so many Pink Floyd reviews on the market it may be difficult to choose. It is a review and does not contain full length songs or interviews. Although promised on the box, the songs mentioned on the back are without exeption, just clips from the songs...
As an audiophile the most anoying lie on the box is the DTS and 5.1 DD logo's, it is just a 2 channel audiotrack which through Dolby Pro Logic II can produce surround sound, but only analogue. Logically, this is not acceptable and an insult to potential buyers.
I haven't read through the whole booklet yet, it is 138 pages of background information, some nice photo's, it seems a rather complete discography. Basically the story told on the discs is the story in the booklet.
The biggest plus is that the whole era of Pink Floyd from start until Live8 is covered. But then again, Pink Floyd is not yet finished, Gilmour and Waters are out on their seperate solotours and today, July 14th, could have been a reunion of the 4 most important Pink Floyd members at the Magny Cours Festival in France where Roger Waters Dark Side of the Moon Solo concert. David Gilmours own solo tour cluttered up the agenda. Possibly some other personal reasons for all 4 members may have had influence as well.
Anyhow, it may mean that a complete review can only be presented if after Syd Barret's passing last friday, july 7th, also David or Roger passes on. Let's hope that doesn't happen anytime soon, but until then Pink Floyd isn't over yet.
My verdict, a rip-off 1 star for soundquality, an ok 3 stars for content and a good 4 stars for the packaging. All together it doesn't add up to more than 3 stars...Pink Floyd - Reflections & Echoes (2006) Overview

Threshold - Critical Energy ReviewI purchased this DVD because I was already familiar with their music. I always enjoyed their progressive style of melodic metal somewhat related to Dream Theater.
But I was also aware that Threshold is still developing a fan base which admittedly is growing and the band is only now starting to get rocognition.
I expected a rather low budget release, not having the financial background to produce anything of lofty standards of the likes of Dream Theater, Rush or other well known acts of this genre. But I was very positively surprised. Picture quality and camera work is very good, but what really blew me away is the excellent sound. The mix is absolutely fantastic, each instrument clear to distinguish and the overall sound very powerful just as it should be for this type of music.
The band is in excellent form, the song selection almost perfect.
The only (minor) problem for me is the performance by the singer Mac. His singing itself is flawless with a great voice but I felt that his performance as a front man still leaves something to be desired. He simply seems to lack the matured qualities of a James LaBrie for example.
But apart from that I can only praise their effort in the making of this DVD and I highly recommend it to anyone who is into prog metal like DT or Pain of Salvation.Threshold - Critical Energy OverviewSix official studio releases, a live album, three fanclub releases, tours with Dream Theater, Psychotic Waltz, Enchant and Pain Of Salvation-Threshold have already made their mark on the international rock scene. After several line-up changes at the beginning of their career, the British band has been a stable formation since 1998, continuously working hard on the development of their unique sound.Their 2001 release, Hypothetical, was a document of great musical homogeneity and their new album, Critical Mass was another step forward as far as the compositions and the overall sound goes. Karl Groom and Nick Midson (both guitar), Steve Anderson (new bass player), Richard West (keyboards), Johanne James (drums) and Andrew McDermott (vocals) have toured with the new material in October 2002 and June 2003. On February 2nd Threshold will release there first ever Live-Double Album and Live-DVD. The Double CD featuring the 2 hour gig, which was recorded on the 6th of June in Holland. The DVD includes the complete concert, additional 24 minutes from ProgPower USA 2002, a 12 minute tour documentary, audio commentary from Karl Groom and Richard West and a stereo and 5.1 surround mix.

Christiane F - O.S.T. ReviewThis is one of the few Bowie compilations that makes sense. Perhaps the only one that really will fit nicely into a Bowie fans Bowie collection. Because it focuses on just one period it retains a mood throughout. Most people have a favorite Bowie period or two, and this happens to be one of mine. Theres a lot of great stuff on the four albums from which these songs are taken but here you get to hear them in different company, like a highlight reel of the 76-79 period. V-2 Schneider followed by TVC 15 is a great way to start any listening session. Then the German version of Heroes and Boys Keep Swinging which has some of the wickedest guitar ever heard on a Bowie song. Then the quiet interlude of Sense of Doubt which fades out into the long train intro to Station to Station(live), a great version. Then the studio version of Look Back in Anger and a great version of Stay and another fade out into the moody Warszawa. My only complaint is that this intersting cycle doesn't keep going. Its over too quick. But the good thing is that you get to hear songs you already know in this unusual order which for once on a compilation disc makes a lot of pleasing good sense. Perhaps the movie should get credit for this, the movies heroine is a Bowie fan and these are her favorites and that gives this collection a personality lacking in other collections. Much better than the professionally selected and marketed packages which are never very good. Maybe future Bowie compilations will learn from this approach. The best is to own all of Bowies 76-79 CD's, but this is a worthy second best and a great intro to those who want to get to know this period.Christiane F - O.S.T. Overview

Hullaballo Soundtrack (Bonus CD) ReviewThe quest for world domination continues. Here is Muse's third instalment of progressive, heavy rock. This time it's a double CD of B-sides and live songs. First, the B-sides. It must be said that Muse have a fairly set sound, and a lot of their songs sound fairly similar. Upon closer inspection, you will notice that it is mainly Matt Bellamy's voice that causes this effect. This is more evident that ever on the B-sides album. Many of these songs experiment further away from their album tracks. Opener Forced In is spaced out and eerie rather than in-your-face, and Map of Your Head is a sprightly, major-chord formed ditty, complete with medieval acoustic guitar, yet Matt Bellamy's voice causes them to sound like trademark Muse all the same.
There's no denying it, Muse's B-sides are not as strong as their album tracks, generally. However, this is not necessarily a bad thing. Whilst it does mean that this B-side album is nowhere near as good as last year's Origin of Symmetry, it at least means that they are selecting the right tracks for their albums. In this way B-sides albums are a bit of a no-win situation: if they are only average, they are criticised as substandard and if they are excellent the band are criticised for not making them album tracks.
Not that there aren't good efforts here. The aforementioned Map of Your Head is very enjoyable, whilst Shrinking Universe is classic Muse and standout Nature_1 has the strongest tune on the CD. Generally though, this collection doesn't bear the killer hooklines that Origin of Symmetry, or, indeed, Showbiz did, whilst being enjoyable and worth owning, so CD1 gets 3 stars.
The live CD is a different matter. Muse are an intense band. Everything about their music is intense. And intense bands are excellent live. Muse are no exception. Live CDs tend to either be interesting variations on the recorded versions with added intensity but played comparatively poorly, with the singer missing notes, or well played, but no different to the studio recordings. Here Muse manage to avoid either trap, managing to sound live and intense while playing very professionally.
Here you can hear how well the trio work together, with bass more audible than on studio recordings, as they sometimes hit little periods of improvisation. Variations are added to the songs: the guitar riff on Muscle Museum is made more complex, while Micro Cuts is taken at a faster and more natural pace, and epics Citizen Erased and Megalomania hit their peaks and valleys with even more passion than on Origin of Symmetry: one of the finest moments of Hullabaloo being as Citizen Erased quietens down after its loudest sections, with Matt Bellamy beautifully handling the vocals, in a wonderfully exhausted sort of way.
It is credit to Bellamy's fantastic singing that he can manage the incredibly high notes and difficult techniques just as easily live as in the studio. The only time he seems slightly pressed is on recent non-album single Dead Star, though this is fully explainable by the fact that they had not actually recorded it at the time, and so had not benefited from the producer's input over how the song should sound, and they are evidently not quite done working on it at the time of the recording. Still, even this track is fantastic. Therefore, CD2 is nothing short of brilliant, and it gets 4 1/2 stars.Hullaballo Soundtrack (Bonus CD) Overview

Emerson Lake & Palmer - Live at Montreux (2004) ReviewI'll give this a token one star because Carl Palmer can still play like hell and Greg Lake plays the most beautiful bass guitar I've ever seen (not heard, mind you, seen.) Otherwise this disc is literally going in my trashcan. I can only assume that my fellow reviewers who've looked upon this DVD kindly are so young that they never saw ELP in their prime, when they were an amazing band and their concerts a thrilling, spine tingling experience. I HAVE NEVER SEEN THREE MUSICIANS WHO HATE PLAYING TOGETHER SO OBVIOUSLY as I do on this DVD. The bad vibe between Emerson and Lake is palpable, they won't even look at each other. Emerson's chops are all but gone, he's content to substitute speed for accuracy, he's all over the place, sloppy BEYOND belief, the Alvin Lee of keyboards. Greg Lake plays some nice acoustic guitar but plays bass like he hasn't picked it up for a decade and isn't all that sure where the right notes are. His voice is....well, it's gone. He sounds like me doing a really, really good imitation of Greg Lake in the shower, with the flu. Technically, as others have noted, the sound is dreadful, as is the stage lighting which never surpasses that which you saw at your high school prom. On the positive side, even at half effort, playing with two guys who clearly don't give a damn, Carl Palmer shows why he was one of the greatest drummers of his era, if not the greatest. If you're a young fan, please know that ELP were honestly one of the most important, groundbreaking, genuinely awe-inspiring bands of the 70's... though you'd never know it from this travesty of a performance. If you're an ELP fans who remembers their greatness, avoid this at all costs. It's a quick cash desecration of their past brilliance, a trashing of their own art and their own heritage. It's just too sad.Emerson Lake & Palmer - Live at Montreux (2004) Overview

Queen ReviewThe boys had officially decided to call themselves Queen (under the forceful persuasion of Freddie Mercury) by 1971, after finally choosing the bassist they wanted (John Deacon), and come 1972, they had completed and recorded most of the tracks to this album (though the album wouldn't initially be released until 1973.) Musically speaking, the unique characteristics of (70s) Queen (a/k/a "The Queen sound") that many came to know (e.g. the opera-rock, the outlandish whimsy, the strange juxtapositions of gender-bending/vaudeville/opera/metal) CAN be heard here, just in rawer, unpolished and underdeveloped terms. But other than that, the album is mostly a smorgasbord of classic heavy metal, psychedelia and progressive rock.
But, despite it being a work in progress (for Queen, anyway), the album is strong and solid on it's own. That's probably one of the most [standard] statements ever made, but for the first time, I'm tempted to apply it here. I really think if Queen were not to evolve or make another album after this, they still would have been recognized as having sophisticated musical talent - whether by critics (puh!) or by other musicians. Ironically, that's one of the few 'gifts' I noticed Queen to possess: not totally reaching their peak in a certain setting, yet what they come up with, seems to be strong in character and golden on it's own. "Keep Yourself Alive" was the 'somewhat' popular track on here, as Brian May in particular is playing some crunchy, yet sophisticated licks on his self-made guitar. I agree with some of the reviewers below who said that after listening to this (as well as the rest of the album), one gets a sense that Queen possessed a certain overwhelming, indescribable intensity and talent that was WAY ahead of it's time - and this was only their debut - an album that only gave hints of what would blossom on later efforts. Freddie Mercury (unsurprisingly) gave a wonderfully forceful vocal performance on here. "Doing All Right" was originally co-written by then vocalist Tim Staffel (Note: during that time, the band was called Smile, not Queen.) Anyway, the song progresses nicely from soft, wistful guitar passage-filled verses, which feature ethereal and angelic falsettos from Freddie Mercury, leading into the chorus' featuring summery vocal harmonies, which are then later followed by unexpected guitar blasts from Brian May.
Elsewhere, "Great King Rat" opens up with Brian May's trademark snaky guitar overdubs. The track features some pretty bold and daring lyrics (which were not uncommon with Queen) revolving around [explicit] metaphors, while "My Fairy King" gives subtle glimpses of the bizarreness that would be found in progressive rock tracks such as "The March Of The Black Queen," and later "Bohemian Rhapsody." Features some pretty bizarre, and arty lyrics, which feature many references to astrology and mythology, and delivered in Freddie Mercury's trademark seductive, gender-bending, Divaesque vocals.
"Liar" seems to get much praise by many of the reviewers here, and it's hard for me to disagree. A theatrical, almost operatic track, it manages to combine convincing, thought-provoking lyrics, intelligent dynamics and shifting in musical atmospherics, and Freddie Mercury in particular is raving it up on his vocals - shifting effortlessly from plaintive stylings, to genre-bending, oversexed moans, to forceful, passionate pleading and everything else, which I found highly impressive. There's also a section in the middle which features some exotic percussion, vocal chants and other atmospherics which seem utterly spiritual. Moving along to "Modern Times Rock N' Roll." This to me reminds me not of Led Zeppelin, but of some of the music that was labeled as proto-punk back in the 70s. In fact, to bring some attention to the former, I really don't think Queen has much in common with Led Zeppelin as many others seem to claim (I was particularly offended and infuriated by comments made by some of those half-witted critics for the Rolling Stone regarding Queen.) The many years I've been listening to Queen, I was never once reminded of Zeppelin. I would encourage many other reviewers not to buy too much into those comparisons, as to compare one band to the other is like comparing apples and oranges. "Son & Daughter" has a sinister glam-metal feel to it, especially in the slow, seductive heavy blasts from Brian's guitar, fronted by Freddie's venomous vocals. "Jesus" is the religious-infused closer to the album, which features some clomping chords from Brian (mostly minor chords), while Freddie gives a passionate vocal performance full of conviction. The track also sounds like it could have come from a Broadway musical. "Seven Seas Of Rhye" is a short, instrumental and somewhat alternate version of the full track found on the following album _Queen II_. The bonus cut called "Mad The Swine" is a keeper. I'm surprised this didn't make the original cut. A percussion-heavy track which also features some religious lyrics.
An excellent, prestigious and often overlooked debut. It's probably not best recommended for the uninitiated Queen fan to start out with, but for the Queen fan who owns a few of their albums (especially their more essential ones), and has interest in experiencing the roots of the band. Conversely, it's also recommended for the listener who appreciates quality rock music, added with some bizarre and sophisticated elements.Queen Overview

More Than This: The Story of Roxy Music (2009) ReviewThis is not a very good documentary and I agree mostly with Mr. Rubbo's review. I have trouble putting in words how disappointed I am with this disc. It's too short. Also, too many talking heads who have little to nothing to do with the band. Bono? Why? Simon Le Bon is unexcusable and insulting. Please don't take your hatred of DuranDuran out on Roxy Music! Roxy was very image conscious, but they could also play killer music. Bad interviewing techniques and bad editing are the ruination of the film. What is missing from this documentary is an analyses of that music. Discussions of the lyrical content is slim. "No one was writing lyrics like that...," comments one the talking heads. Begs the question what lyrics? The only real attempt is a disscussion of in "Every Dream Home...," which leaves me wanting for more. Ferry appears "inarticulate" in this film because the filmmakers did not give him enough time or good questions to work with. The hint at "what could have been" is a bonus clip where Ferry is actually given a good question, about his vocal style, and answers it in a sweet and sincere way. He mentions listening to Otis Redding and just singing until he found his own style. Unfortunately, they end it there. Surely, there were other influences, definitely Lou Reed (listen the song "Casanova" and especially the word "heroin"). But THEY DO NOT TALK ANYMORE ABOUT THE BAND'S INFLUENCES! Why is the vocals clip not in the body of the film? MAKE BRYAN FERRY TALK! He's singer/songwriter not an improv artist.
This goes for the rest of band. Andy MacKay and Phil Manzanera, in particular, are cursed by little time and bad interviewing. The few seconds of Mackay and Manzanera actually playing are good, but again, MORE! For example, how did Manzanera and MacKay's songwriting collaborations with Ferry work? What was the inspiration behind Manzanera's earthshattering solo on "Amazona? When did MacKay fell it was best to play oboe on one song, but saxophone on others? The documentary's chief sin is nearly skipping over the album "Siren." Yes,they flash the album cover and mention "Love Is A Drug," and the producer says, "We knew that was going to be a hit." For the 50th time, WHY? No mention that this song is one of the defining lyrical themes of the band: that romance is addictive and transitory. One night your with someone, the next night another, but it's just a buzz. It doesn't last. Ferry was able to sing about such subjects without self-pity or self-absorption and the band throbbed in time like a lovesick heart.
The reason I give this disc 2 stars is that I found the still photographs intriguing, although they never explain when the photographs were taken. My personal favorite is a black and white 70s era photograph with a beautiful woman sitting on Ferry's lap. Who is this woman? Also, I am only of those Roxy fans who enjoys the reunion tours that the band has done recently and the 2006 Dock Rock performances are brilliant. Roxy Music was never a "youthful band," they always sounded experienced and mature with their dexterity and ability to play together. Ferry was always sounded like a mature, man of the world even when he was 26. "I tried but I could not find the way/Looking back, all I did was look away" from (Remake/Remodel first track on the first album) and the chain of advice at the end of "Editions of You" especially "Old money's better than new/And don't let this happen to you." Ferry is a born performer, soulful, warm, funny and whips up everyone in his path. Manzanera and MacKay are still amazing especially on solos. What a rush! Why doesn't this documentary talk about Roxy as a live act? How did Ferry develop all those amazing hand gestures?
In the end, this disc is only for Roxy Addicts like myself. If you want to introduce someone to Roxy Music or show Roxy haters the errors of their ways, DO NOT show them this documentary. It gives a false image of the band. Saying that Roxy influenced DuranDuran and others who cared more about looks than singing, playing, and songwriting is a lot like holding The Who responsible for "Godspell." If you want to introduce someone to Roxy, play the Music in any format you have and let them decide for themselves. Maybe, "Siren" or "Stranded" for starters and go from there. Either that or play the youtube videos of the original BBCTV performance of "Virginia Plain" or the 1976 Stockholm concert footage of "The Thrill of It All." Such performances and others can be found on "The Thrill Of It All" DVD, which I recommend over this disc any day.More Than This: The Story of Roxy Music (2009) Overview

The Doors Original Soundtrack Recording ReviewGreat soundtrack to a good movie. This really serves as a basic "best of" with a few extra's. Half of this is the big songs you would expect, but what I like is the inclusion of "love street", and 3 tracks from the "American Prayer" album: "ghost song", "stoned immaculate", and "the severed garden". Plus you have the Velvet Underground track "heroin", and Carmina Burana. Also a cool little clip from the movie starts it all off. Why this is an import now I don't know. I guess all the Doors hype of the early 90's is long past. It was fun while it lasted. At least we'll always have the music. The Doors Original Soundtrack Recording Overview

Kansas: There's Know Place Like Home (2009) ReviewOne word - EPIC. This DVD is amazing. Kansas is amazing. Ehart, Williams, Walsh, Greer and Ragsdale joined forces with a 50-piece symphony for an unforgettable performance. Let's get down to business! Steve Walsh has shocked me and delivered an absolutely knock-out performance. He hits every single note and his voice sounds fresh and vibrant. This was the best I've heard him since 1990. He especially shines on "Ghosts, "Nobody's Home," "The Other Side," and "Dust..". Ehart's drumming is so powerful and it's such a pleasure to watch his technique. Greer was fantastic on bass and even more so on the backing vocals. When he harmonizes with Walsh a great blend is created. Rich Williams was really on his game, especially on "The Wall" and "Carry On". But the guy who was the most impressive and fun to watch was Ragsdale. This guy has such flair and showmanship. As good as Robby Steinhardt was, Ragsdale is a flashier and more exciting player. If this wasn't enough we get guest appearances from Kerry Livgren and Steve Morse. The latter plays such a fiery lead on "Musicatto" it's hard to believe he's human. Livgren was exceptional as well and it was cool to see him playing a pipe organ during "The Wall". Of course there are 50 other stars of the show - the symphony. Their performance added such beauty to all the epic songs and meshed so well with the band. It was truly a match made in heaven. "Nobody's Home" was especially moving. The conductor was fun to watch too. Quite simply, this DVD captures Kansas on one of their very best nights. It should also be noted that the camera work and lighting are spectacular. Without question this DVD not only blows Live At The Whiskey and Device-Voice-Drum away, it obliterates them. The setlist is comprised from 10 different albums, so there's something here for Kansas fans of any era. No fan should be without this gem. Highly recommended.Kansas: There's Know Place Like Home (2009) Overview

Dream Theater - Images and Words Live in Tokyo / 5 Years in a Live Time ReviewThis is a must especialy for a Australian fan whom up until now have not had the chance to see these guys in concert. Do not buy this collection expecting to see and hear top notch production as these film where taken from video tape particularly the Live in Tokyo the volume is quite low. However what the production value lacks the Band makes up for in shear brilliance.
My favorite out of the set is the second coming in just on 2 hours we see the later 90's version of Dream Theater in 6 or 7 different concerts with tour video in between. In fact it will make you wish that they would put out the Rotterdam show and the Paris show (last) on their own.
I guess this is for the die hard fan but you don't by Dream Theater on a whim, enjoy.Dream Theater - Images and Words Live in Tokyo / 5 Years in a Live Time Overview

Eno, Brian - 1971-1977: The Man Who Fell To Earth (2011) ReviewThis disc contains, in order of quantity:
- endless blathering by music critics and "social commentators," (who, with the exception of Eric Tamm, are irritating and too often incorrect)
- playback of Eno's commonly available studio recordings with unexplained (and frequently inexplicable) video clips
- portentious narration that provides the few laugh moments in the film
- a few interesting interviews with musicians who've worked with Eno (particulary Hans Joachim Roedelius)
- a few staggeringly bad interviews with musicians who've worked with Eno (particularly Lloyd Watson)
- a SMALL AMOUNT of Eno footage from the 1970s, some clips of which are repeated close to a dozen times
This disc does not contain, in any quantity:
- Interviews with Eno (save for about 30 seconds of him talking about Roxy Music)
- Interviews with any of his collaborators (save for a very brief clip with Jon Hassell)
- Music you haven't heard before
- Video you haven't seen before
- Information you didn't know before (except for the stuff that's wrong)
- Experts you want to hear from
Sometimes unauthorized documentaries are incisive portraits of difficult people who didn't want the truth told about themselves. Sometimes they are simply half-assed jobs suffering from a lack of access to the subject. This is the latter.

Where the Wild Things Are (2009) ReviewI know others will go deep with analysis of this product, so I will just state what I think is the most important element. This show seems to have been edited by someone who is not only aware of this type of music, but also a fan. I cannot handle nonstop 2 second cuts to every camera view that I could care less about. Jethro Tull: Live at Madison Square Garden 1978 (DVD/CD) (2009) ReviewDo this: buy this set. Insert the DVD into your video player. Choose 'Track select: Opening.' Then enjoy an hour of the most exceptional Jethro Tull footage heretofore released. Ask: When have you been so richly entertained for $20? But wait, there's more: add the audio tracks that precede and follow the DVD footage, and the companion CD you get, too.
We probably have this in common: the whole CD catalog, all the video released to date, the album where the band stands up, and the one that folds out as a newspaper. If I were to select a single favorite Jethro Tull product, it may very well be the concert telecast featured on this DVD. I simply can't recommend it more highly.Jethro Tull: Live at Madison Square Garden 1978 (DVD/CD) (2009) Overview

Roger Hodgson: Take the Long Way Home - Live in Montreal (2007) ReviewI've recently seen Roger Hodgson singing at the "Concert for Diana" in July and it was terrible. Partly he sang off-key: "The Logical Song" turned into "The Horrible Song". In fact I was very sad to see that this singer finally has reached the age when the voice doesn't always sound as you wanna have it.
BUT:
It seems that Roger Hodgson just had a very, very, very bad day at the "Concert for Diana". Because the show on this DVD is ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC. His voice as you know it for years, no singing off-key, an audience singing along and giving him standing ovations after almost each song. Plus a Roger Hodgson full of energy + in high spirits. Plus excellent picture quality + superb audio quality.
Some movies are so-called "Feel-Good-Movies". And I call this concert a "Feel-Good-Concert". It's perfect. When I've finished watching it just a few minutes ago, I felt so happy although the weather outside was cold and rainy. A typical day to feel blue, but this DVD has saved my day.
And I think, it's a show to see and hear over and over again.
For all Roger Hodgson and Supertramp fans: THIS DVD IS A MUST!!!Roger Hodgson: Take the Long Way Home - Live in Montreal (2007) Overview

Alan Parsons: Eye 2 Eye - Live In Madrid (2010) ReviewI actually was interested in finding a DVD featuring the music of Alan Parsons, and I could never find anything. All of a sudden this DVD came out, and it is rock solid. A band in fine form, a great selection of songs (although I would have loved a version of Ammonia Avenue), just a great DVD. Nothing fancy about this one. No big stage show, or great graphics, just a solid performance. Some great tracks: Time, Prime Time, Dr. Tarr and Professor Fether, I wouldn't wanna be like you... and a very interesting fact: all of the band takes a lead vocal (with the exception of the keyboard player), and they do renditions of classic vocal performances by great vocalists.
If you like Alan Parsons Project at all, this is a must have!Alan Parsons: Eye 2 Eye - Live In Madrid (2010) OverviewNTSC/Region 0. 2010 live DVD from the legendary studio wizard and his self-named project. H.A.A.R.P.: Live from Wembley (Region 2 DVD) ReviewHAARP is the answer to the question of why Muse scoops just about every single "best live act" award that they are nominated for. We're talking about a band that has been able to master every single aspect of live entertainment on a career that has spanned over the past 10 years.
Being lucky enough to witness Muse on stage 6 times, I have to say that their performance never gets boring, and it's never short of fascinating. Matt Bellamy's voice, guitar riffs and distortions bring all that on-stage magic, backed of course by the stunning drum performance of Dom Howard, and the brilliant bass lines and backing vocals of Chris Wolstenholme.
Anyone who's been lucky enough to witness the Muse live experience knows that it's powerful, over the top, and enchanting.
In other words, Muse makes U2 look like Hannah Montana.
I truly wanted to give this DVD a 5 star review, but the only thing that stops me from doing so is the lack of extra features. Certain songs from the performance on the night of June 17th are missing, as well as songs from the 16th that weren't played on the 17th, including:
- Sing For Absolution
- Bliss
- City of Delusion
- Citizen Erased
- Sunburn
- Man of Mystery
- Microcuts
Let's just hope that we will be able to witness these performance, on a Blu-Ray release of HAARP.
Nevertheless HAARP could easily be considered among the best concert DVD releases ever.H.A.A.R.P.: Live from Wembley (Region 2 DVD) OverviewThe fan base for Muse grows with every release. 2006 s Black Holes And Revelations broke into the U.S. Top 10 while hitting #1 in the U.K. and much of Europe, where it sold 1 million copies and was #3 on NME's Albums Of The Year list. A multiple BRIT Award winner for Best Live Act,Muse then staged two massive sold-out performances at 90,000-seat Wembley Stadium in London last June, which increasingly are recognised as amongst the definitive live moments of the year. The best performances from those concerts, as well as bonus backstage footage, are presented on the CD/DVD set HAARP. The concerts once again demonstrated the raw power and unquenchable ambition of one of the UK's most successful long-term bands and one of, if not the, greatest, most ambitious live act in the world at the present time.

David Gilmour in Concert - Live at Robert Wyatt's Meltdown (2002) ReviewFreed from the shackles of what Pink Floyd has become, David Gilmour sounds positively liberated on his new live DVD, David Gilmour in Concert. The years have snuck up on him, as it inevitably does to all of our heroes, but his voice is even more expressive now than it has ever been. He's actually becoming more like his long-estranged counterpart Roger Waters, and that's a good thing, a great thing in fact.
They are both world-weary veterans having finally arrived at similar crossroads in their lives after drifting apart in their not-so-distant youth. Both men's voices are thinning, sometimes straining to reach notes. While Waters is still the bleeding-heart poet, and Gilmour still the guitar virtuoso, both seem tired of the bloated excesses of the rock n' roll machine that had welcomed them with open arms all those years ago, instead opting to embrace a more deconstructed approach to performing.
Even moreso than Waters' latest hits tour, Gilmour has unearthed rarely performed gems and obscure covers, and has re-invented overplayed classics. The result is breathtaking. His take on Syd Barrett's seminal Terrapin is pure magic, and Dick Parry's sax solo on Shine On is a freeform revelation. It's this sense of experimentation that has been missing from Gilmour's repetoire since he and the Floyd recorded Dark Side. He's even managed to take his latter-day Floyd tunes into exciting new directions. Take High Hopes for example, what once sounded somewhat inflated and bombastic confined to its awkward Floyd-by-numbers construct, has now taken on a more stripped and organic flavor. Even his lyrics play better without the baggage of the brand name. It's also wonderful to see Richard Wright, playing Breakthrough from his own Broken China album, sounding relaxed and beautiful.
Much of the beauty of the performances is in the rawness of the sound; often times you can hear each finger slide down the fret, each bend of the string. It's a clear and pristine recording to be sure, but it's not sterile and perfect, it's live, alive. Listening to the 5.1 surround, you could swear Gilmour is just feet away, acoustic guitar slung over his shoulder, entertaining guests at an intimate gathering.
The bonus features are equally rewarding. Gilmour's cover of "Don't", the Leiber and Stoller song made classic by Elvis Presley, is heart-wrenchingly beautiful, and his rendering of Shakespeare's Sonnet 18, with Michael Kamen, is sublime.
I was quite frankly shocked at how much I enjoyed this DVD. I've already played it more times than I've played Waters' excellent In The Flesh Live. I'd nearly forgotten how definitive Gilmour's guitar sound is, and how much I missed his voice. It's truly the sound of a wisened man with nothing to prove, a man no longer haunted by the ghost of Roger Waters. If this release is any indication of things to come, I will be waiting with just as much anticipation for Gilmour's next solo album as I am for Roger's, and praying for old friends to make amends.David Gilmour in Concert - Live at Robert Wyatt's Meltdown (2002) Overview

Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage (2010) ReviewSaw "Beyond" last night at a one-night special showing in a Minneapolis theater, and it is without a doubt one of the most interesting and entertaining films I've seen this year, and beyond. And yes, yes, I'm a Rush fan...but I'm not a RABID Rush fan. I'm missing a few of their albums and while I have a ticket to see them in concert this fall, that will be the first time. I say this only by way of stating for the NON-Rush fan: Don't let that deter you from seeing this great documentary. There is so little actual music in it, that anyone, even those just interested in human interest stories and biopics, will find plenty to love here. There is close friendship, tragedy, very comical moments, inspiration...the whole package. And how great is it to see "rock stars" who are intelligent and generally lacking an over-inflated sense of ego? I think my favorite moment in the film might have come when the trio was aboard a plane, heading, if I remember right, to their next concert, and they all three pulled out books and began to read. I didn't see what everyone was reading, but Alex was half through Christopher Hitchens' God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything. I have a hard time picturing just about any other rock stars doing something like that--with the possible exception of Bad Religion's Greg Graffin.
One funny thing from the film showing of "Beyond." I arrived fairly early, and then three other guys sat down to my left, and then a few minutes later another guy was about to sit in the single seat remaining to my right, and I asked him, "Couldn't get your girlfriend to come either, huh?" And he said, "No, my wife wouldn't come." And the guys to my left said, "Yeah, ours either." So there we were, a row of middle-aged, none-too-thin white dudes, enjoying the hell out of this movie. It had a good tribal sort of feeling to it, bonding with like-minded strangers like this. So when you pop this into your DVD player, maybe have some buds around to enjoy it with you.Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage (2010) Overview2011 GRAMMY NOMINEE: BEST LONG FORM MUSIC VIDEORush is one of rock's most influential bands. Ranked third in consecutive gold or platinum albums after The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, the band enjoys a devoted following by legions around the world and is revered by generations of musicians. Yet, their incredible success story has, up to this point, remained largely untold. Now comes the new documentary Rush: Beyond The Lighted Stage, the first comprehensive exploration of the extraordinary power trio. Featuring never-before-seen archival footage and interviews with notables such as Jack Black, Billy Corgan, Trent Reznor, Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters), Kirk Hammett (Metallica) and Gene Simmons, this film explores the forty-year career and phenomenon behind what could be the world's biggest cult band. This Blu-ray DVD in deluxe packaging features over 3 hours of video, including a 1.5 hour bonus disc of never-before-seen live performances, special features, and deleted scenes from the film. A 12 page color booklet of rare and unreleased photos is also included.

Styx - Return to Paradise (1999) ReviewThis DVD, bought last year, was my first music/concert video purchase. It was a good choice and led to about 30 more purchases over the last 6 months or so. The video is clear, camera work is good and the sound is great. I was using an old Dolby Pro-Logic setup when I bought this but have since upgraded to a full DD 5.1/DTS home theatre system. This DVD sounded really good with my old system but, in comparison, sounds awesome now. In this concert (the songs are listed somewhere else on this page so I won't repeat them), Styx performs most of my favorites and the band is tight. I saw them live in Houston back in the 80's and again this year at the Rodeo in the Astrodome - not a good venue for concerts. But this live concert on DVD is better in many respects since you get to see the band close-up and the sound is almost as good as being there, if you have a good sound system. Also, I think the current Styx lineup misses something without the great voice of Dennis DeYoung. So, if you like the original Styx lineup, this is the DVD to get. Also, if you like to see closeups of the musicians when they are playing, the camera work with respect to that is fairly good. I've seen better on other DVDs but you do get some shots of JY and Tommy doing the riffs from some of the classic Styx hits.
I would say this DVD a must-have for STYX fans and very entertaining for anyone else who likes "middle-of-the-road classic rock" (i.e. somewhere between "soft rock" and "heavy metal"). I give it 5 stars based on 1) video and camera work, 2) 5.1 sound track and 3) the fact that I've always liked Styx's music and most of my favorites are on this DVD.Styx - Return to Paradise (1999) Overview

Breakfast in America ReviewSupertramp practically *owned* 1979 with their mega-smash album from that year, "Breakfast In America." The British band had been making creative, irresistible pop/jazz/rock for nine years & five albums by this time, but "Breakfast," the sixth album, was The Big One for the group, a #1 smash on the album charts all over the world. Though certainly not a "concept" album, the theme for "Breakfast In America" came from bandleaders Roger Hodgson & Rick Davies, who, for this album, wanted to write songs about what it was like to be a British person living in the USA, which is what the whole band were doing by this time. Credit Hodgson & Davies for writing such wonderful songs, such as the hits "The Logical Song," "Goodbye Stranger," and "Take The Long Way Home." But even the non-hits are shimmering beauties, such as "Gone Hollywood," "Oh Darling" (not to be confused with the Beatles tune), "Lord Is It Mine," and the exuberant finale, "Child Of Vision," all played to perfection by Hodgson, Davies (who both do great vocal work as well), sax player John Halliwell, bassist Dougie Thomson, and drummer Bob Siebenberg. This new remastered edition of "Breakfast In America" sounds sensational, with greater boom & clarity than any CD version of "Breakfast" that I'd ever heard before (including the now-defunct gold disc version from Mobile Fidelity). Now you can enjoy Supertramp's all-time classic the way it was meant to be heard. Pick it up, and enjoy this delicious breakfast as only Supertramp can serve it. :-)Breakfast in America OverviewJapanese only SHM-CD (Super High Material CD - playable on all CD players) pressing packaged in a paper sleeve.
