Santana: Hymns for Peace - Live at Montreux 2004 (2007) ReviewThis is what happens when you get a collection of some of the world's best jazz musicians, very talented vocalists, and Carlos Santana on one stage together...just a spectacular performance!
Santana and his band are worth the price of admission alone but add Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, John McLaughlin(Santana's mentor back in the 70's), Wayne Shorter, Ravi Coltrane plus Stevie Winwood from Traffic fame, and a collection of wonderful female vocalists and you have one of the very best concert DVD's in a long time. The people attending this concert at the Montreux Jazz Festival saw a history making performance.
Add to this, the camera work was excellent and the sound spot-on. The selections of songs were very eclectic, with pices ranging from, John Lennon, Bob Marley, Bob Dylan, Marvin Gaye, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Harry Bellafonte, and of course Santana. Often, when you get too many front-line musicians on the stage together, it can sound like a train wreck but that never happens here. There seems to be a real sense of symbiosis, all the pieces fall together perfectly.
If you want to see Santana perform his more popular songs get, "Supernatural Live" or the "Santana Live By Request" DVD's.
However, if you want to see "real performers" performing at the highest level, playing songs that inspire them, while having a great time, get this DVD.Santana: Hymns for Peace - Live at Montreux 2004 (2007) OverviewOn July 15, 2004, Santana took to the stage in Montreuxaccompanied by a stunning line-up of guests to perform a concert of songsabout peace and understanding that they dubbed "Hymns For Peace". Dream Theater - Images and Words Live in Tokyo / 5 Years in a Live Time ReviewThis is a must especialy for a Australian fan whom up until now have not had the chance to see these guys in concert. Do not buy this collection expecting to see and hear top notch production as these film where taken from video tape particularly the Live in Tokyo the volume is quite low. However what the production value lacks the Band makes up for in shear brilliance.
My favorite out of the set is the second coming in just on 2 hours we see the later 90's version of Dream Theater in 6 or 7 different concerts with tour video in between. In fact it will make you wish that they would put out the Rotterdam show and the Paris show (last) on their own.
I guess this is for the die hard fan but you don't by Dream Theater on a whim, enjoy.Dream Theater - Images and Words Live in Tokyo / 5 Years in a Live Time Overview

Opeth: The Roundhouse Tapes (2008) ReviewThis is an amazing DVD worth getting by all means. First off I'll get the only bad thing about this out of the way so the I can get to all the greatness. Besides the show there aren't a lot of extra bonus features. Some band/fan interviews and galleries. But that's not even really a complaint, just the letting you know part. And now to the greatness, The performance. First off they give you 3 audio options. Stereo, 5.1 Surround, and DTS. Also the chain has been broken of them playing older tunes which really makes this DVD special as it has some of the older tunes sounding even better than they did on the original cd. It's only a 9 song set but if you're familiar with Opeth you know why that is and it is a great set. Under the Weeping Moon and Night and the Silent Water have never sounded better. The picture is so clean it looks almost hi def. Also this might be the best mixed DVD I've ever heard. No instrument is too low or too loud. It's simply perfect, as is the performance by the band. Every song is played flawlessly and it's good fairwell to Peter Lindgren who will be missed even though his replacement is great also. Anyways, fans and any fan of great metal should pick this up. This is an amazing band and an amazing performance. While Lamentations was a great DVD this one edges it out due to a better setlist and amazing visual and audio quality. Highly recommended.Opeth: The Roundhouse Tapes (2008) Overview

Frank Zappa: Apostrophe / Over-Nite Sensation ReviewThis is the best Classic Albums episode - right up there with The Band episode IMO. There's lots of vintage footage included that I'd never seen (and I have a so-called comprehensive collection), and wonderful interviews with former band members like George Duke, the Underwoods, the Fowler brothers, Steve Vai, Ralph Humphrey, Dweezil and Gail, and of course the man himself Napoleon Murphy friggin Brock. IMO Ruthie steals the show but they're all good. The whole package tells an amazingly comprehensive story of the 73-74 period with lots of passion and humor.
Dweezil sits behind the board for a number of songs and lets us really dig in and hear the more tender nuances and demonstrates how the combinations of instruments and voices fit together (listen for Tina Turner - wow). I must say the Dweeze gets a little wordy, often talking over the music rather than letting it speak for itself. Small complaint though. There's also snippets of ZPZ rehearsals for the Summer 07 tour (BTW, WHY ARE YOU SKIPPING DENVER THIS YEAR?!?! ')
The highlight for me (and probably many others) are the extended video clips of the '73 ROXY shows. These concerts are considered by some as the 'holy grail' of live Zappa. We know the tapes exist, we know there's been talk of releasing them for several years now, I don't care how grainy they are or even if they're edited poorly... PLEASE OH PLEASE STOP TEASING US AND RELEASE ALL THIS IMPORTANT, PRECIOUS CONCERT FOOTAGE ASAP!!! (are you listening Zappa Family Trust?)
Lastly, the extended and deleted clips are all gems not to be missed.
There are probably other details I'm forgetting, but definitely pick this one up even if you're just a casual fan of THE MAN HIMSELF. This DVD is an education for olde tyme fans as well, so Enjoy(tm) !
Frank Zappa: Apostrophe / Over-Nite Sensation Overview"This is where you go to find every aspect of Frank's musicsqueezed into two perfectly formed records."Dweezil Zappa. This newaddition to Eagle Vision's acclaimed Classic Albums series focuses on FrankZappa's early seventies albums "Overnite Sensation" (1973) and"Apostrophe(`)" (1974). Together they encapsulate Zappa's extraordinarymusical diversity and were also the two most commercially successful albumsthat he released in his prolific career. As ever the program usesinterviews, musical demonstrations, rare archive and home movie footageplus live performances to tell the story behind the conception andrecording of these groundbreaking albums. TRACKLISTING:Features excerpts from: -Dinah-Moe Humm -I'm The Slime -Montana -StAlfonzo's Pancake Breakfast -Dirty Love -Cosmic Debris -Stink-Foot & more.

The Moody Blues - A Night at Red Rocks with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra (1992) ReviewMoody Blues fans have long enjoyed and admired the group's unique ability to capture visual imagery in music. In this respect, Live at Red Rocks is a crowning achievement.
The beautiful Red Rocks Amphitheater provides a uniquely appropriate setting for the Moodies' haunting blend of rock melodies and classical accompaniments. The video does an excellent job of incorporating the scenery into the musical flow of the presentation.
Several facets of this production are noteworthy. The film masterfully captures the interplay between the band and the audience, long one of the group's touring trademarks. It also does a wonderful job of documenting the three generation span of Moody Blues enthusiasts, scanning the attendees to reveal middle aged grandparents in casual clothing, twenty-something hippee wannabees, and some fully involved pre-teens, all lost in the rapture of a major Moodies event.
Viewers with a good ear will notice that many of the vocals have a slightly strained quality, not sounding quite as good as one might expect from the likes of Hayward, Lodge and Thomas. This is because Justin was fighting a nasty case of laryngitis the night the video was filmed. Even with that disadvantage, the music still manages to be far beyond ordinary.
So far as the music, the normal repertoire is here. Standard stage versions of classics like Nights in White Satin, Lovely to See You, Story in Your Eyes and their traditional closer, Ride My SeeSaw are included. A true highlight is a magnificent version of New Horizons, powerfully enhanced by a dynamic orchestral background score.
When all is considered, A Night at Red Rocks is a true five-star experience. Don't miss it!The Moody Blues - A Night at Red Rocks with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra (1992) OverviewStudio: Uni Dist Corp (music)Release Date: 10/07/2002
