Perceval (1996) ReviewEric Rohmer's "Perceval" is one of the most stunning films I've ever seen. Based on Chretien de Troyes' unfinished story, this movie is amazing. The scenery and acting are exquisitely stylized, and the story is presented in a blend of medieval-style song, dialog, and narration--all in Old French. It's like watching a medieval pageant come to life. Rohmer's adaptation is remarkably faithful to Chretien's story. I particularly adored the film's depiction of the episode of Gawain and the Damsel of the Small Sleeves--the girl in the film is splendid. Fabrice Luchini portrays Perceval perfectly--naive, callow, youthfully self-centered and determined. I can't praise this film highly enough. If you love the romances of Chretien, this is a must-see. I wish Rohmer had done "The Knight of the Cart," too...Perceval (1996) Overview

Santana: Hymns for Peace - Live at Montreux 2004 (2007) ReviewThis is what happens when you get a collection of some of the world's best jazz musicians, very talented vocalists, and Carlos Santana on one stage together...just a spectacular performance!
Santana and his band are worth the price of admission alone but add Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, John McLaughlin(Santana's mentor back in the 70's), Wayne Shorter, Ravi Coltrane plus Stevie Winwood from Traffic fame, and a collection of wonderful female vocalists and you have one of the very best concert DVD's in a long time. The people attending this concert at the Montreux Jazz Festival saw a history making performance.
Add to this, the camera work was excellent and the sound spot-on. The selections of songs were very eclectic, with pices ranging from, John Lennon, Bob Marley, Bob Dylan, Marvin Gaye, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Harry Bellafonte, and of course Santana. Often, when you get too many front-line musicians on the stage together, it can sound like a train wreck but that never happens here. There seems to be a real sense of symbiosis, all the pieces fall together perfectly.
If you want to see Santana perform his more popular songs get, "Supernatural Live" or the "Santana Live By Request" DVD's.
However, if you want to see "real performers" performing at the highest level, playing songs that inspire them, while having a great time, get this DVD.Santana: Hymns for Peace - Live at Montreux 2004 (2007) OverviewOn July 15, 2004, Santana took to the stage in Montreuxaccompanied by a stunning line-up of guests to perform a concert of songsabout peace and understanding that they dubbed "Hymns For Peace". Prokofiev - Cinderella / Sibley, Dowell, Royal Ballet (1969) ReviewThis is a typical product of the forties, conservative, elegant and with a reserved sense of humour. Ashton's choreography is very classical in the sense that it's more respectful to tradition than innovative. Antoinette Sibley is a gracious dancer with a limpid technique, but I found Anthony Dowell's dancing rather cold. Frederick Ashton and Robert Helpmann are absolutely hilarious as the jealous sisters. The second act ballroom scene - where Ashton dances with a rather diminutive partner - is a jewell of integrated dance and pantomime.
The recording seems to be dated, though. The colors look faded and the sound has been poorly recorded. Also, the story has been shortened. After the ballroom scene the prince - in the original third act - travels to foreign ountries (Arabia and Spain)to find Cinderella. This act has been ommited, which is a pity for it gives an excellent opportunity for character dances.
There are four other versions of the ballet. The one choreographed by Maguy marin for the Lyon Opera Ballet is a claustrophobic and anguished piece, recommended to those who are interested in psychoanalysis and the avant-garde. Nureyev's version for the Paris Opéra Ballet has Sylvie Guillem as its main point of interest. Her partner Charles Jude has few chances to dance and Mr. Nureyev doesn't even have a dancing part. The action has been brought to the Hollywood of the twenties.
The Bolshoi version is the closest to the original. Raissa Struchkova gives a rather naive interpretation but her dancing is vigorous yet refined. This version was filmed as a feature film, not in a theater. The sense of humour is rather heavy sometimes. Sound and color are passable. The last version on video I know is of the Sevchenko Ballet from the Ukraine. In my opinion it's the most interesting. Sound and image are finely recorded and the cast, although little known - whoever heard of Alexey Ratmansky? - dances beautifully. It's quite difficult to get, as it was recorded on laser disc.Prokofiev - Cinderella / Sibley, Dowell, Royal Ballet (1969) OverviewCINDERELLA:PROKOFIEV COVENT GARDEN - DVD Movie

Classic Albums: The Doors - The Doors (2008) ReviewFor every Doors fan, this is a thrill to have the first Doors album featured on a Classic Albums dvd. I have been a Doors fan since 1967 and have enjoyed their very unique style of music for 41 years.
This dvd features 7 of their 11 debut album songs, 1.Break On Through (To The Other Side), 2.The Crystal Ship, 3.Back Door Man, 4. Alabama Song (Whisky Bar), 5.Light My Fire, 6.End Of The Night and 7.The End. It does not feature the following 4 songs: Soul Kitchen, Twentieth Century Fox, I Looked At You and Take It As It Comes. I wish they had covered all 11 songs, as it is fascinating listening to the surviving Doors Ray Manzarek (organ, piano and bass), Robby Krieger (guitar) and John Densmore (drums) telling how these songs began and how they evolved into one of the greatest albums of all time.
Jim Morrison's poetry was almost always the beginning of their great songs, but there were many other influences that Ray, Robby and John brought into their unique sound from jazz, blues, latin, flamenco and bossa nova music. They even brought in some James Brown music!
There is much bonus material that really makes this worth owning as well. Ray tells of learning to play a Marxaphone on Alabama Song that gives the song it's carnival sound. Robby tells about his slide guitar, which gave The Doors such a unique mystical sound. John tells many of his trade secrets on the drums, such as he uses size 7A drum sticks, which are very thin and break easily, but give him maximum speed.
There are also great stories about Jim Morrison from 1967 told by The Doors. Bruce Botnick, the sound recording engineer for The Doors, plays many tracks from this fantastic album by themselves, so you can hear just single tracks of Jim Morrison's voice or just single tracks of the instruments. Jim Morrison can be heard singing with no accompaniment to show that his voice alone was unbelievably incredible!
Ray was such a talent on the keyboard, that he was the bass player! They never needed a bass guitar player with the fantastic sounds Ray could make on his keyboard. They tell how Moonlight Drive never made it to this first album, because the sound was not quite right. Moonlight Drive did make it on the second album, Strange Days, when it was slowed down quite a bit and a harpsichord sound was added to it. There are also commentaries from manager Bill Siddons, Jac Holzman who signed The Doors to Elektra Records, friend and poet Michael McClure, LA DJ Jim Ladd, other musicians, a film student and a music writer.
This dvd brought back many memories from 1967, when the shortened version of Light My Fire stayed at #1 on the record charts for that summer. The magic and genius of The Doors from 1967 is still there and it comes through on this dvd. I only hope that Classic Albums will feature more of The Doors truly fantastic albums like Strange Days and Waiting For The Sun, because listening to the origins of The Doors unbelievably fantastic songs is just like listening to The Doors songs for the first time in 1967!Classic Albums: The Doors - The Doors (2008) Overview

Twister: Music From The Motion Picture Soundtrack ReviewI bought this CD (which is getting harder to find) strictly for the Van Halen song "Respect the Wind". That song, to my knowledge, cannot be found anywhere else. It's really done by Edward and Alex Van Halen so it's not "technically" a Van Halen song. Regardless, that song alone made the CD worth buying.Twister: Music From The Motion Picture Soundtrack Overview

The Doors Original Soundtrack Recording ReviewGreat soundtrack to a good movie. This really serves as a basic "best of" with a few extra's. Half of this is the big songs you would expect, but what I like is the inclusion of "love street", and 3 tracks from the "American Prayer" album: "ghost song", "stoned immaculate", and "the severed garden". Plus you have the Velvet Underground track "heroin", and Carmina Burana. Also a cool little clip from the movie starts it all off. Why this is an import now I don't know. I guess all the Doors hype of the early 90's is long past. It was fun while it lasted. At least we'll always have the music. The Doors Original Soundtrack Recording Overview

Santana: Hymns For Peace - Live at Montreux 2004 (2007) ReviewI saw Shorter/Santana on this tour, still have the T-shirt to prove it. It was an awe-inspiring moment in music history. Santana had been doing his brand of jazz-rock fusion since the '70's, but had taken a detour into the pop world. Santana's "Lotus" and "Caravanserai" are masterpieces, not to mention Carlos' work with Alice Coltrane. The reviewer has quite obviously not done his homework, as Leon "Ndugu" Chancler worked with Santana in 1974-1976, *before* joining Weather Report (Chancler was in Weather Report in 1975). Santana has been friends with Wayne Shorter for many years, recorded "The Swing of Delight" with Shorter in 1980, which may have been a bit ambitious and fell fairly short of their potential.
However, any professional music reviewer that truly believes that drummer Chester Thompson switched to keyboards for this tour is a bumbling idiot. Chester Thompson, the keyboard player, has been playing with Santana since 1983, as well as being a *major* name in Hammond organ players, having been the main keyboard player for the Tower Of Power for 10 years.
Chester Thompson, the drummer, played with Weather Report for one year, in 1976, but was the long-time touring drummer with Genesis. He's a great drummer, but he'll never be a keyboard player at the level of his namesake in the Santana band.
This tour was an amazing feat, and while Shorter has a much richer history in the jazz-rock world than Santana, their playing seemed to be the perfect complement to each other. I eagerly await the next time Carlos decides to take such a risk and leave the comfortable pop world to explore jazz textures with Shorter.
Santana also performed a kickin' version of Miles Davis' "In A Silent Way/It's About That Time", of which the former was written by future Weather Report keyboardist/leader Joe Zawinul. The Weather Report/Shorter connection goes much further back and is much stronger than our friend Sam would have us believe.Santana: Hymns For Peace - Live at Montreux 2004 (2007) OverviewOn July 15, 2004, Santana took to the stage in Montreuxaccompanied by a stunning line-up of guests to perform a concert of songsabout peace and understanding that they dubbed "Hymns For Peace". Dylan Speaks: The Legendary 1965 Press Conference in San Francisco (2006) ReviewIn December 1965 - less than 6 months after Dylan went "electric" at the Newport Folk Festival, he was in San Francisco for 3 concerts. Jazz critic Ralph Gleason arranged for a televised hour-long press conference at WQED and recorded it on video. Thanks to the late Gleason's son Toby (who has made many of his father's Jazz Casual" jazz shows available on DVD), the full press conference is now available. This is a MUST for true Dylan fans and an entertaining curiosity for those who were fascinated by Martin Scorsese's documentary on Dylan earlier this year.
By technical standards, the print is top notch and sharp. The sound is the best that can be expected when the questioners did not use microphones to ask Dylan their questions. (You can hear his answers just fine!).
There were about 30 reporters in the room, including poet Allen Ginsburg (who Dylan lists - in answer to one question - as one of his favorite poets).
I won't give away all of the gems which come from Dylan during the 50-minute conference but He's really prophetic when asked: "If you were to sell out to `commercial interests', what would they be ?". He replies "Ladies garments" . 40 years later he was doing commercials for Victoria's Secret!
Dylan is VERY relaxed in his manner and quite open. He chain smokes through the whole session.
This DVD has no bonus features and is sort of budget priced, so it's definitely worth a watching and , if you are a Dylan completist, adding to your collection.

Paul Simon And Friends: The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song (2009) ReviewA very special DVD. Using Simon's own band to back up the other artists performing his songs was a brilliant move, as it maintained the integrity of his works in their new forms. It did seem like the videographer (or editor) was enamored of Simon's band manager Mark Stewart, as he appears prominently in an extraordinary number of scenes.
The inserted clips of Simon singing "Mrs. Robinson" at the Yankee Stadium tribute to DiMaggio was as awkward here as it was originally. The clips of Simon's recorded duets with Miriam Makeba and George Harrison were priceless, welcome additions.
The only real downer of the whole experience was Philip Glass's piano mangling of "Sounds of Silence". It was tortured and barely recognizable!
Overall, this purchase was well worth the money!Paul Simon And Friends: The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song (2009) Overview

James Taylor - Pull Over (2002) ReviewI'm a bit torn when it comes to this DVD. On the one hand, James Taylor is an extremely talented musician, especially in concert. The material on this DVD is everything a Taylor fan could hope for - the classics like Fire and Rain, a few less well-known songs such as Frozen Man (beautifully done on this DVD), and some stuff from October Road. But the production values on the DVD itself are a bit less than stellar. The quality of the picture is okay at best, and at times rather poor. Also, whoever did the camera transitions should be fired - call me picky, but the transitions between views were often poorly timed and lent absolutely nothing to the experience of watching the performance.
Still, despite all this, I give it five stars because I love James Taylor, and I love his music. Any fan who can say the same will surely like this DVD. The technical issues aside, I am very pleased with Pull Over. It's no substitute for seeing James perform in person, but it is nevertheless a must-have for James Taylor addicts.James Taylor - Pull Over (2002) OverviewWith a career thriving well into its fourth decade and one of the most beloved catalogs in the world, James Taylor is more than the definitive singer-songwriter. He's an American treasure. His latest project, James Taylor & Band-Pull Over, captures James at the height of his craft. Filmed in the summer of 2001, the 23-song program features James's greatest hits, fan favorites and a look ahead. The DVD features 5.1 mixes done by Grammy winner Frank Filipetti, a complete discography and a 10-minute behind-the-scenes look at the recording of October Road. When James Taylor picked up the Best Male Pop Vocal Performance trophy at the 44th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony in February 2001 (for "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight," a track from Michael Brecker's Nearness Of You collection), it was the latest in a string of Grammy wins for the artist going back three decades. Taylor earned his first Grammy (Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male) in 1971 for his recording of Carole King's "You've Got A Friend." After moving to Columbia Records in 1976, Taylor claimed his second Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male Grammy in 1977 for his wry interpretation of Jimmy Jones's "Handy Man." JT, his Columbia Records debut, has since gone on to hit triple platinum. In 1998, his platinum Hourglass album snared Grammys for both "Best Pop Album" and "Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical." His contribution to In Harmony, a Sesame Street album, helped that album win a "Best Recording For Children" Grammy at the 1980 ceremony.James started writing music in the mid 1960s as a student at a New England boarding school, far removed from his family and friends in the Piedmont Hills of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The first artist signed to the Beatles' Apple Records, James Taylor released his self-titled debut album in 1968. Containing instantly memorable songs like "Carolina In My Mind" and "Something In The Way She Moves," James Taylor immediately established him as an important new voice in contemporary music. Moving to California, and Warner Bros. Records, in 1969, James Taylor recorded his first platinum album, Sweet Baby James, released in March 1970. A year later, Taylor was featured on the cover of Time magazine, which heralded him as the harbinger of "the singer/songwriter era."His songs reflect his passion for music and a dedication to the constant evolution of his craft; and they have had a profound influence on both songwriters and music lovers of all generations and from all walks of life. Crosby, Stills & Nash - Acoustic (1991) ReviewI own quite a number of DVD concerts and this one has to be one of the top 10.Recently I purchased " Daylight Again" and was somewhat disappointed ,but this one more than adds what the other concert lacked.Crosby is totally awesome. He literally beams with enthusiasm during this entire concert. They all do, but David stole the show this time. Little did he realize he'd be undergoing a liver transplant 4 years later. Even though the concert is named " Acoustic" it's not totally that, Stills is quite electric throughout the concert. At times he's almost overwhelming on certain songs in my opinion. Their voices are powerful in this show. They started out a little flat on the first song, Deja Vu and I thought Ut Oh. Oh NO !, but then it changed and wow they got it together and sounded so good I got down right sappy. ( don't tell anyone about this please ) LOL... The sound of the DVD quality is just great. It sounded as good on my computer DVD player in stereo as it did on my Sony Trinitron with Dolby digital 5.1 surround sound. It's truely awesome. You won't be disappointed in this concert DVD , so take my word for it and add it to your collection. It will make you smile time and time again.Crosby, Stills & Nash - Acoustic (1991) OverviewItem Name: Crosby, Stills & Nash - Acoustic; Studio:Rhino / Wea

The Very Best Of MTV Unplugged 3 ReviewWhen I saw this disc I thought "Another "Best of Unplugged? Let's see what left-overs were included here".
I was surprised to see that almost all the songs were hits by these artists since the earlier Best Of's included songs I had never heard before.
17 tracks (10 of which were previously unreleased) in their acoustic versions where the standouts are:
Sting - Message in a bottle
REM - It's the end of the world as we know it....
Alanis Morrissette - Hand over feet
Sheryl Crow - Leaving Las Vegas
Kiss - Sure know something
The cure - Boys don't cry
Live - I alone
THe bonus here is that a DVD with the 17 performances is included which makes this a must have for all Mtv Unplugged lovers out there.
Very enjoyable and I highly recommend to all music lovers. The Very Best Of MTV Unplugged 3 Overview

The Beatles - The First U.S. Visit ReviewThis is an engaging documentary of The Beatles' first U.S. visit. What makes it so fascinating are their performances on the Ed Sullivan show, which are captured here. Digitally remastered, this early television footage has been expertly restored, enabling the viewers to see and hear The Beatles, as they first appeared on American television.
Cheeky and exhuberant, The Beatles, occasionally off key but having the time of their lives, have not lost the capacity for knocking the socks off the viewer, as they are brimming over with vitality and the joy of life. They are truly wonderful to watch, as well as hear. Fortunately, the video covers all their performances on Ed Sullivan, and what a treat they are! It is sad to think that already two of them, John and George, are no longer with us.
The film documents a more innocent and simple time. It captured The Beatles on the threshold of international fame. It memorialized for all time their first U.S. visit with footage shot in railroad cars, hotel rooms, and limousines. Some of it is somewhat self-conscious, and some of it is playful fun. It also memorialized the reactions of their fans. The film is a daily cinema verite testament to that first visit.
This is a very good documentary that is well worth having soley for the performances of The Beatles. There are over thirteen of them, and the tracks have been digitally remastered for your listening pleasure. Overall, however, the documentary lacks some cohesion, due to the cinema verite nature of the film. Still, it is a worthwhile documentary to have, if only for those wonderful Ed Sullivan performances. If one wants a historical overview of The Beatles, one may also wish to view the more in depth and complex documentary, "The Compleat Beatles".The Beatles - The First U.S. Visit OverviewFIRST US VISIT - DVD Movie

U2 Go Home - Live From Slane Castle (Limited Edition Packaging) (2002) ReviewThe Packaging
The first surprise is that the DVD is available in two different kinds of packaging. One version comes in the usual digipack-cover as we know it from the Boston DVD. Inside you find the booklet in the usual DVD upsize format. The second version, in contrast, comes in a suprising format: its a standard cd jewel case with a booklet in the same format. A pretty unusual format for a DVD and day-to-day customers might easily mix up this version with a normal audio CD.

The Content
The DVD contains the entire slane castle concert from September 1st. 'Mysterious Ways' is not part of the concert, but listed as a 'bonus track'. The reasons for this are still unknown. The concert without Mysterious Ways lasts 1:38h, the bonus track is 6:26 min long. Furthermore the DVD contains a remastered version of the 'Unforgettable Fire' Documentary, which has been available before on the 'The Unforgettable Fire Collection' VHS from 1985. Bonus-Features include the already mentioned Mysterious Ways track, a DVD-ROM section with screensavers, desktop wallpapers, an elevation tour calendar and weblinks, plus - for the the first time ever - the possibility to view 3 songs from the show in a 360° perspective.

The Concert
The most noticeable fact about this concert is the perfect mood the band was in on this evening. What seemed somewhat artificial and nervous in the Boston show, you can see much better here - the band enjoyed playing a second time in front of such a crowd at Slane Castle. Maybe it's the fact that it was not planned to release this concert for sale. Some incidents before the shows made both Slane concerts very emotional. The huge crowd brings a terrific spirit to the homes of all U2 fans, and the interaction with fans is much better here than in Boston.

Between songs Bono tells stories, plays games with fans and makes other kinds of jokes, all this makes the recording and U2 on this evening so likable. We pass on a song by song review, as we think that each viewer has to make up his own mind about this concert. We just want to point out that U2's mood and musical performance is outstanding. In comparision with all the other live videos this is the one which transports the feeling of a live concert best. All other videos tend to be stiff in some way or too well prepared. U2 at Slane Castle 2001 is the band U2 we want to see, they act with their hearts and have fun.
The Picture
The concert was recorded with many camera perspectives although Ned O'Hanlon said in an @U2.com interview that the expenses on that show were just a small fraction compared to the expenses for recording the Boston show. The spirit of the entire show is captured very well, shots from and of the audience are used very often and reflect its enthusiasm. The video format is 16:9, the pictures are sometimes very coarse, sometimes due to special effects, but this may have to do something with the light conditions during the shooting.
The Sound
This is the first time a U2 DVD is released with DTS sound, in addition to the PCM stereo format and DolbyDigital 5.1. But we think that for a normal user there is no relevant notable difference. Bonos voice is transferred very clearly via the centre speaker. The instruments are mixed to the front speakers, from the rear speakers you can notice quiet echoes, which are sometimes irritating. The audience is well mixed into the rear-speakers. There is no crystal clear mixing as can be found on DVDs like 'Eagles - Hell Freezes Over', where each instrument can be heard on a different channel. But maybe it's not comparable, because the Eagles show was a club-gig especially prepared for this, U2 in Slane was an open-air show which was, at the time of recording, not scheduled for a release.
The Extras
'The Unforgettable Fire' documentary
As mentioned before this is a remastered version of the 'Unforgettable Fire' documentary which follows the recordings of the album of the same name at Slane Castle in 1984. The video format is 4:3 and the documentary is 28 min long. The Documentary also includes the "Pride (In The Name of Love)" video. The picture quality is not the best, it's far away from DVD-quality.
Bonus-Track 'Mysterious Ways'
Once the track list of the DVD became public, many fans were shocked as the same song which was already missing on the Boston DVD was once again cut out. For still unknown reasons the song was taken out of the usual running order of the DVD and instead placed as a bonus track. It is not as was rumoured (and feared) a so called "easter egg", but a normal track which can easily be accessed via the main menu. (Remark: Producer Ned O'Hanlon said in a recent interview that the song just didn`t really fit into the show).
DVD-Rom Bonus Tracks
The most anticipated special, the 360° view of the concert, ends up being a Quicktime video of the three songs Elevation, Beautiful Day and Where The Streets Have No Name. Users have the possibility to spin around 360° degrees in real time at the touch of their mouse. A real high-end-special-feature feeling unfortunately doesn't come across due to the lack of quality which reminds one of a cheap webcam.
The second special feature is the 'Elevation tour diary calendar and clock'.
Furthermore two screensavers in red and blue are available - their style matching the artwork of the DVD. Nice, but not really exciting.
Four desktop motives are available to polish up your Windows system. They are available in 1024x768 and 800x600 resolution.
Finally the obligatory links to U2.com and NGOs that are supported by U2 are featured. Exclusive weblinks are unfortunately missing.
