Christiane F - O.S.T. ReviewThis is one of the few Bowie compilations that makes sense. Perhaps the only one that really will fit nicely into a Bowie fans Bowie collection. Because it focuses on just one period it retains a mood throughout. Most people have a favorite Bowie period or two, and this happens to be one of mine. Theres a lot of great stuff on the four albums from which these songs are taken but here you get to hear them in different company, like a highlight reel of the 76-79 period. V-2 Schneider followed by TVC 15 is a great way to start any listening session. Then the German version of Heroes and Boys Keep Swinging which has some of the wickedest guitar ever heard on a Bowie song. Then the quiet interlude of Sense of Doubt which fades out into the long train intro to Station to Station(live), a great version. Then the studio version of Look Back in Anger and a great version of Stay and another fade out into the moody Warszawa. My only complaint is that this intersting cycle doesn't keep going. Its over too quick. But the good thing is that you get to hear songs you already know in this unusual order which for once on a compilation disc makes a lot of pleasing good sense. Perhaps the movie should get credit for this, the movies heroine is a Bowie fan and these are her favorites and that gives this collection a personality lacking in other collections. Much better than the professionally selected and marketed packages which are never very good. Maybe future Bowie compilations will learn from this approach. The best is to own all of Bowies 76-79 CD's, but this is a worthy second best and a great intro to those who want to get to know this period.Christiane F - O.S.T. Overview

The Hands of Orlac (1924) (1924) ReviewI have waited since 1968 to see this movie which I first encountered in Carlos Claren's seminal book AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF THE HORROR FILM which traces horror movies from 1895 through 1967. It has been worth the wait. In fact I was so taken with the film that I immediately watched it again and enjoyed it more the second time. Made in 1924 at the height of Expressionism in German silent cinema, THE HANDS OF ORLAC is the one of the finest examples of this genre that I have ever seen. Directed by Robert Wiene (THE CABINET OF DR CALIGARI) the film combines lighting, sets, camerawork, and performances into a dreamscape of enormous power.
The movie is like a hallucination come to life as we follow the descent of Conrad Veidt into the depths of madness. Veidt, more than any other silent performer, used his body language to illustrate and convey the most intense emotions. What really surprised me was the sensual almost erotic quality of scenes involving him and the two principal female performers Alexandra Sorina and Carmen Cartellieri. This adds an element not to be found in the more stylized CALIGARI and shows that there was more to Robert Wiene than we have seen so far. The story of a concert pianist whose amputated hands are replaced with those of a murderer has been remade a number of times most notably by MGM in 1935 as MAD LOVE with Peter Lorre. However none of those versions can compare to this one. Having said that let me also say that those unfamiliar with silent films will find this version tough going for it requires you to adjust your present day expectations to those of the silent era where body language and visual storytelling are everything. If you can do that then you should find THE HANDS OF ORLAC a rewarding experience especially on repeated viewings.
The restoration of the film isn't top notch (it resembles how NOSFERATU used to look) but thanks to a remarkably brooding and effective score from Paul Mercer you'll be drawn in before you know it and will hardly notice the imperfections. This is a much better film than THE CABINET OF DR CALIGARI and until other of his movies see the light of day to contradict the fact, THE HANDS OF ORLAC is Robert Wiene's masterpiece. Thanks to Kino International and the F.W Murnau Foundation for making it available. The Hands of Orlac (1924) (1924) Overview

Classic Albums: The Doors - The Doors (2008) ReviewFor every Doors fan, this is a thrill to have the first Doors album featured on a Classic Albums dvd. I have been a Doors fan since 1967 and have enjoyed their very unique style of music for 41 years.
This dvd features 7 of their 11 debut album songs, 1.Break On Through (To The Other Side), 2.The Crystal Ship, 3.Back Door Man, 4. Alabama Song (Whisky Bar), 5.Light My Fire, 6.End Of The Night and 7.The End. It does not feature the following 4 songs: Soul Kitchen, Twentieth Century Fox, I Looked At You and Take It As It Comes. I wish they had covered all 11 songs, as it is fascinating listening to the surviving Doors Ray Manzarek (organ, piano and bass), Robby Krieger (guitar) and John Densmore (drums) telling how these songs began and how they evolved into one of the greatest albums of all time.
Jim Morrison's poetry was almost always the beginning of their great songs, but there were many other influences that Ray, Robby and John brought into their unique sound from jazz, blues, latin, flamenco and bossa nova music. They even brought in some James Brown music!
There is much bonus material that really makes this worth owning as well. Ray tells of learning to play a Marxaphone on Alabama Song that gives the song it's carnival sound. Robby tells about his slide guitar, which gave The Doors such a unique mystical sound. John tells many of his trade secrets on the drums, such as he uses size 7A drum sticks, which are very thin and break easily, but give him maximum speed.
There are also great stories about Jim Morrison from 1967 told by The Doors. Bruce Botnick, the sound recording engineer for The Doors, plays many tracks from this fantastic album by themselves, so you can hear just single tracks of Jim Morrison's voice or just single tracks of the instruments. Jim Morrison can be heard singing with no accompaniment to show that his voice alone was unbelievably incredible!
Ray was such a talent on the keyboard, that he was the bass player! They never needed a bass guitar player with the fantastic sounds Ray could make on his keyboard. They tell how Moonlight Drive never made it to this first album, because the sound was not quite right. Moonlight Drive did make it on the second album, Strange Days, when it was slowed down quite a bit and a harpsichord sound was added to it. There are also commentaries from manager Bill Siddons, Jac Holzman who signed The Doors to Elektra Records, friend and poet Michael McClure, LA DJ Jim Ladd, other musicians, a film student and a music writer.
This dvd brought back many memories from 1967, when the shortened version of Light My Fire stayed at #1 on the record charts for that summer. The magic and genius of The Doors from 1967 is still there and it comes through on this dvd. I only hope that Classic Albums will feature more of The Doors truly fantastic albums like Strange Days and Waiting For The Sun, because listening to the origins of The Doors unbelievably fantastic songs is just like listening to The Doors songs for the first time in 1967!Classic Albums: The Doors - The Doors (2008) Overview

The Doors Original Soundtrack Recording ReviewGreat soundtrack to a good movie. This really serves as a basic "best of" with a few extra's. Half of this is the big songs you would expect, but what I like is the inclusion of "love street", and 3 tracks from the "American Prayer" album: "ghost song", "stoned immaculate", and "the severed garden". Plus you have the Velvet Underground track "heroin", and Carmina Burana. Also a cool little clip from the movie starts it all off. Why this is an import now I don't know. I guess all the Doors hype of the early 90's is long past. It was fun while it lasted. At least we'll always have the music. The Doors Original Soundtrack Recording Overview

NOTRE DAME OF PARIS (1999) ReviewWith the huge success of such grand musicals as LES MISERABLES and THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, it was perhaps obvious that sooner or later Victor Hugo's classic of love and fate, NOTRE DAME DE PARIS (AKA "The Hunchback of Notre Dame") would also get the musical treatment. Disney had already done it before as an animated film, but this time, the tragic story would be presented as a big operatic musical production. The end result would be somewhat mixed as NOTRE DAME DE PARIS became a theatrical box-office hit in both France and Canada, while underwhelming British and American audiences. (Part of this could be blamed on an English translation that proved to be both repetitive and banal.)
This DVD of NOTRE DAME DE PARIS presents the production in its original French with the option to access other language sub-titles, including English. There is also a 15 minute documentary covering the making of the musical. NOTRE DAME DE PARIS is indeed a sprawling production on a grand scale. It tells the story of the beautiful gypsy Esmeralda and of the three men who are enthralled by her: the soldier Phoebus, the priest Frollo, and Notre Dame's hunchbacked bell ringer, Quasimodo. When Esmeralda is accused of a crime which she did not commit, Quasimodo rescues and shelters her in the sanctuary of Notre Dame. However, things fall apart with tragic results.
Garou does a wonderful job of capturing the pain and humanity of Quasimodo. With his plaintive gravelly voice, his is a touching performance. Helen Segara makes for a wonderfully beautiful, if somewhat distracted, Esmeralda. Daniel Lavoie is appropriately tortured as the nasty Frollo, while Patrick Fiori is solid as the shallow Phoebus. Julie Zenatti makes the usually minor role of Pheobus' fiancée an effectively strong one, while Bruno Pelletier keeps things united as a poet/narrator. The costumes, which basically suggest the story's medieval timeframe, are only partially successful in that some of the modern touches are far too jarring for the story. The choreography also suffers since some of the numbers become far too sprawling and unfocused. There are wonderful touches throughout, however, including the sobering heart-felt finale which is true to the novel. (Something that most filmed versions of this classic tend to avoid.)
Despite its flaws, NOTRE DAME DE PARIS is definitely a show that respects its source material. As a result, it deserves attention and is definitely worth a recommendation.NOTRE DAME OF PARIS (1999) Overview

Rush: Music From The Motion Picture Soundtrack ReviewEric Clapton had never provided the score to a film, but he finally jumped into the film area with the soundtrack to Rush. The movie chronicles the tale of two undercover narcotic offices who in the course of their jobs become heroin addicts themselves. The album is made up of mostly instrumentals that has a dark and mellow nature that underscores the decent into drug addicted hell the two cops spiral into. Mr. Clapton himself was facing tragedy as he was recording the album, his four year old son Conner, was killed when he accidentally fell out of a window. To memorialize his son, he wrote and recorded one of most haunting and elegant songs ever written about the loss of loved one, "Tears In Heaven". The song would go on to bigger fame in it's Unplugged version, but the studio version is equally beautiful and worth buying the album for alone.Rush: Music From The Motion Picture Soundtrack Overview
