Chicago - A Musical Vaudeville (1975 Original Broadway Cast) Review... why this show flopped the first time around (yeah, yeah, "A Chorus Line"... biiiig deal... wow.). And why people don't realize what an absolutely TERRIFIC recording this is. First of all, just look at the names. GWEN VERDON (which, alone, is enough to make me gape in awe). CHITA RIVERA. JERRY ORBACH. I mean, these are absolutely brilliant performers. Let me tell you a little about each song, maybe that will help you in your decision to purchase this CD.
-The Overture is a LOT of fun. VERY roaring 20's ish.
-All That Jazz. FUN SONG! And, to me, this is Chita's baby. Nobody can perform it like her... BeBe came CLOSE... but this is Chita's song all the way. Such spirit.
-Funny Honey: Gwen does such a great job with this song... and I LOVE to hear her sing "Lord knows he ain't got the smarts!" I prefer Gwen's Roxie to Ann's because... well, as much as I love Ann Reinking, her voice is so grainy and rough hewn on this song. Gwen's is breathy and throaty, but still girlish enough to make you feel kinda sorry for Roxie. Gwen is so fantastic in this song! Marvelous!
-Cell Block Tango: I haven't heard a bad version of this song yet... but this song is my favorite... just to hear Chita go "I didn't do it!" And the Liz is SPECTACULAR with her "So I said to him I said, 'BERNIE! You pop that gum one... more... time.' And he did. So I took the shotgun off the wall, and I fired two warning shots. Into his head!"
-When You're Good To Mama: Mary McCarty does a GREAT job with this song... she and Vicki Lewis sing it very similar, which I think is great.
-All I Care About: Jerry Orbach RULES as Billy Flynn. I mean, he just sounds so much more... sleazy and... sneaky... and like some crooner out of the 20s than James Naughton. The man has an amazing voice, which, up until I heard this, I didn't know. (Idiot me didn't realize he was Lumiere in Beauty & The Beast... go figure!)
-A Little Bit Of Good: Just listen to M. O'Haughey hit those high notes. You'll understand. :o)
-We Both Reached For The Gun: Fun and a half on this one, ladies and gentlemen! Again, the high point in this song is to hear Gwen Verdon go "Are you kiddin'?!" But it's a truly great, fast, fun song!
-Roxie: Okay, FAR SUPERIOR to ANY version I have EVER heard done of this song, including that of Ann Reinking and Ruthie Henshall. This is classic, wonderful, ever-sparklin' Gwen Verdon. I mean, had I ever been around in 1975 to see her do this number... I'd have probably fainted. Her vocals are terrific, and the song is just so much fun... and not as choppy and wavering between speaking and singing as the other versions are. Gwen's absolutely TERRIFIC in this song, she sparkles like no one else ever did and ever will again!
-I Can't Do It Alone: Another rousing rendition of a song by Chita. Lots of fun... you'll run around going "She'd say 'What's ya sista like?!' I'd say 'MEN!' Yuk yuk yuk!" for days!
-My Own Best Friend: Beautiful, beautiful song sung by two beautiful ladies with beautiful voices.
-Me And My Baby: Some people don't like the ballad version that Gwen sings as much as the jazzier version. Oh well, this one's still cute as it can be. Gotta adore Gwen.
-Mr. Cellophane: Barney Martin does a superb job with this song! Chalk one up for him!
-When Velma Takes The Stand: Chita shines again... ya gotta love her.
-Razzle Dazzle: I like this version of Razzle Dazzle more than James Naughton's, and ESPECIALLY more than the way they did it in "Fosse"... all... slow and what not. Jerry Orbach's vocals again work their magic.
-Class: Chita and Mary McCarty belt out this one! Great fun, and great voices!
-Nowadays: Gwen does a GREAT job with the solo at the beginning... I've often heard said that Gwen was not a first rate singer, but I don't see what's so bad about her voice. Maybe she's not Shirley Jones or Ethel Merman, but she's anything BUT off-key and she's got SPIRIT. She brings a lot of spirit to the first half. Then, she and Chita make a harmonious sound together in the second half... it's wonderful just to hear their devilish little laughs after "It's gonnnnna change, ya know... hahaha!"
-All That Jazz Reprise: And it closes with a bang from Chita, belting out "All That Jazz"!
All in all, this is a GREAT CD, and a must have for die hard "Chicago" fans, die hard Gwen Verdon fans (such as myself), and die hard Chita Rivera fans.
This is ALSO a GREAT CD if you just want a recording from "Chicago". It's a masterpiece in my eyes, and you won't regret purchasing it.Chicago - A Musical Vaudeville (1975 Original Broadway Cast) Overview

Provoked (CD & DVD Combo) ReviewThis was an awesome tour. I just want to let people know - THIS IS STILL IN PRINT. It was just released summer '08. I don't know why it's out of print on Amazon already.
Anyone notice how Henry has seemed to completely change his game with this one? After the four great Talk Is Cheap volumes - which were all unedited - this was put together with a very hack n' splice feeling. There are a whole bunch of bits from this tour that I saw on Youtube clips that aren't included here. With this wealth of material, this could easily have been a 2 disc set. Also, there is not really a 2.13.61 store anymore. His stuff is now sold through someplace called Music Today - and I think with the move, a lot of his older CDs got tanked along with it. And also, the fact that Henry thanks Best Buy in the notes, while not mentioning other people he has thanked on every single release for the last 20 years, means something. Altogether, not a bad disc, but I think it's a sign of something.Provoked (CD & DVD Combo) Overview

E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack ReviewBesides being the film that Walt Disney would've made had he been alive, "E.T., the Extra-Terrestrial" is one of those genuine "great" films that works on all levels. Without one of its strengths lies in the superb scoring of John Williams. He has fashioned music that is endearing, lush, thrilling, illuminating, frightening, and heavenly.
It is the end where the score really gets emotional. The final medley ("Escape/Chase/Saying Goodbye) is a triumph of Williams' genius. As the ship closes, taking the little alien back to his world as the boy looks on, Williams delivers an emotional punch that literally "knocks" the listener on his/her feet. The familiar "E.T. Theme" is played again, but this time the skies open and all who listen feel the bond so shared by Elliott and the little creature.
Like I said, when I heard this in the theater, I jumped up and applauded, like everyone else this little tale so wondrously told in sight and sound.E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Overview

Our Idiot Brother ReviewThis is a really fun, sweet and warm soundtrack to a movie of like character. Eric D. Johnson's original compositions are enjoyable for multiple listenings, and the other artists like Willie Nelson and Carole King just fill out this soundtrack so that throughout you feel like Ned, just feeling your way through life. It gives you pause and relish. I say, I am glad I bought this. Our Idiot Brother OverviewThe Our Idiot Brother soundtrack album's 16 tracks are a reflection of the film's mirthful quirkiness. The score was written by film composer, musician and author NATHAN LARSON (Boys Don't Cry, The Woodsman and The Messenger) and Fruit Bats' founder ERIC D. JOHNSON. Johnson contributed an alt incredibly cool version of "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree" to the lineup and Larson "Mellotron Melody." Another stand out is the infectious "Taking You With Me," a youthful alt country duet from MINDY SMITH and DANIEL TASHIAN written especially for the film. One of the Johnson-Larson tracks, "Cowboys and Hobos," features guest vocalist NINA PERSSON of the Swedish reared band THE CARDIGANS (whose offstage life includes being married to Larson). Check out "Lightning Bug," an unreleased track from Johnson's own FRUIT BATS and "Cool Yourself" by Thao with the Get Down Stay Down from their cult classic album Know Better Learn Faster. There's more: "When They Fight They Fight," from throwback popsters the Generationals and "The Things You Lost" from singer/tunesmith El May (aka Lara Meyerratken). Also included is CAROLE KING's Tapestry classic "Beautiful" as well as three offerings from the WILLIE NELSON canon: "Wonderful Future," "Midnight Rider" and "Ol' Blue."

Veronica Mars ReviewI've always loved a good soundtrack. Most of the time, soundtracks are pretty crappy-just a hastily thrown together collection of some random songs that happened to appear in a movie or on a TV show. However, sometimes a film or show has a soundtrack that is just as important as the work itself. What would "Top Gun" be without "Danger Zone" and "Take My Breath Away?" What would "Pretty in Pink" be without the title song? The soundtrack to "Almost Famous" is one of my favorite albums, simply because it doesn't feel like a soundtrack--it feels like an expertly crafted mixtape. That is exactly the feeling I get when I listen to the soundtrack to "Veronica Mars."
I have loved this show since it first premiered in 2004 and I will watch it faithfully until it goes off the air (which will hopefully not be soon). Unlike many shows geared towards teens, "Veronica Mars" actually has a brain and a heart. And also unlike other teen shows, it doesn't use music as a marketing tool. Horrible shows like "The OC" and "One Tree Hill" essentially pack their episodes full of anemic "indie" music and then try to sell it to you. It isn't about creating a mood. Its about making money. "VM" is completely the opposite of this. This is clearly a show made by people who love music and don't flaunt it every chance they get. Key moments are often met with perfect soundtrack choices that enhance the mood, tell a story and make sense for the show. Fourteen of these songs are included on this amazing soundtrack.
SONG: "We Used to Be Friends" by the Dandy Warhols
WHEN IT APPEARED: This is the show's theme song. It appears before every episode, though they have rearranged it to a moodier, darker piece for the show's third season.
MY OPINION: A great, bouncy rock song that perfectly tells the story of this show. It will have you dancing and singing along in no time.
SONG: "I Hear the Bells" by Mike Daughty
WHEN IT APPEARED: Episode 2.20 "Look Who's Stalking" (Logan and Veronica talk at the alterna-prom)
MY OPINION: A gorgeous, moody song that went perfectly with an excellent scene. The lyrics are especially interesting in this one.
SONG: "I Know I Know I Know" by Tegan and Sara
WHEN IT APPEARED: Episode 2.16 "The Rapes of Graff" (Logan and Hannah get physical)
MY OPINION: Catchy, girly, sexy and unique.
SONG: "I Turn My Camera On" by Spoon
WHEN IT APPEARED: Episode 2.03 "Cheatty Cheatty Bang Bang" (Veronica spies on Kendall)
MY OPINION: A great, funky song with a pounding beat that gets under your skin.
SONG: "No Sleep Tonight" by the Faders
WHEN IT APPEARED: Episode 2.05 "Blast from the Past" (Homecoming band)
MY OPINION: Great rock song that always makes me stomp along and cut loose.
SONG: "Dakota" by Stereophonics
WHEN IT APPEARED: Episode 2.08 "Ahoy, Mateys!" (Logan pulls a gun on the Fitzpatricks at River Stix)
MY OPINION: One of my favorites on the soundtrack. Really catchy, gravelly and sexy.
SONG: "Sway" by the Perishers
WHEN IT APPEARED: Episode 2.17 "Plan B" (Veronica and Logan dance at Sadie's)
MY OPINION: A gorgeous, aching love song. Beautiful.
SONG: "Long Time Coming" by the Delays
WHEN IT APPEARED: Episode 2.01 "Normal is the Watchword" (Duncan keeps visiting Veronica and leaves her the fortune cookie)
MY OPINION: Really great, sort of fun and an awesome melody.
SONG: "On Your Porch" by the Format
WHEN IT APPEARED: Episode 2.02 "Driver Ed" (Jessie meets her father's mistress and Veronica sleeps with Duncan)
MY OPINION: Really chill and quiet. Great for relaxing.
SONG: "Ocean City Girl" by Ivy
WHEN IT APPEARED: Episode 2.08 "Ahoy, Mateys!"(Duncan's dream about Meg and finally reading her letter)
MY OPINION: Very pretty and haunting, with a relaxed, romantic feel.
SONG: "Momentary Thing" by Something Happening
WHEN IT APPEARED: Episode 1.18 "Weapons of Class Destruction" (Logan and Veronica kiss for the first time)
MY OPINION: Great song, perfect for the moment and perfectly explains the rush of new love
SONG: "The Way You Are" by 46bliss
WHEN IT APPEARED: Episode 1.11 "Silence of the Lamb" (Mac's real mother comes to see her with her adopted family; Clarence Wiedman gets the photos from Veronica)
MY OPINION: Incredibly haunting and thoughtful. Gorgeous song.
SONG: "Lost & Found" by Adrienne Pierce
WHEN IT APPEARED: Episode 2.21 "Happy Go Lucky" (Wallace and Veronica share a moment at the end of high school)
MY OPINION: A cute, catchy song that makes me smile.
SONG: "Lily Dreams On" by Cotton Mather
WHEN IT APPEARED: Episode 1.22 "Leave It to Beaver" (Veronica dreams of Lilly and finds peace)
MY OPINION: PERFECT dreamy song for Veronica to say goodbye to Lilly. Great way to end a season and a soundtrack.
In summary, this is an amazing soundtrack that feels cohesive and fits the mood of the show. Perfect. But it.

Passengers: Original Soundtracks 1 ReviewI've owned this album for over 8 years and I continually come back to it as my favorite U2 album. I find the individual songs and the album as a complete experience grow on me with each listening. When I first listened to it I enjoyed a few songs but now I can appreciate the entire album.
I enjoy all of U2's other albums but this one really moves me more than any of the others. Its music is more cerebral and experimental than the rest. Want to hear Brian Eno singing, Bono playing the piano, Edge singing and playing the organ, and Adam Clayton narrating? Then you want this album. I can understand not issuing this album as a "U2" album. If they had released it just like an ordinary album then many U2 fans would have been angry/confused by what they heard.
I like to think of U2 as an artistic band, especially as a counter balance to their popular face. I'm sure Eno had a strong influence over this album but I'm also confident that U2's members contributed a great deal of material. This album combined with the DVD "Classic Albums - U2: The Joshua Tree" gives you a very different picture of U2 than might come across while listening to their pop corpus. More than any of their B-Sides, this album is major departure from what one would expect from U2.
All that said, many people that like U2 would probably dislike this album, however if you own all their other albums you should really add this one to your collection.Passengers: Original Soundtracks 1 OverviewPASSENGERS Original Soundtracks 1 (1995 UK 14-track CD album - a collaborative side project including the hit single Miss Sarajevo featuring Brian Eno U2 and Pavarotti picture sleeve CID8043)

Philip Glass and Foday Musa Suso: The Screens ReviewFoday Musa Suso, esteemed African composer, had a great role in co-composing this music. What he & Glass did was literally work on each line of music together, writing a note or a few notes before the other had his turn at it. The result is something they were both very pleased with & which neither could have composed on his own. The work is brimming with Glass's repeated figures, but it's not music you might expect from him. Exotic, dry, often ethereal, it'll coat your dreams at night with a fine white sand.Philip Glass and Foday Musa Suso: The Screens Overview

District 9 (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) ReviewIf you enjoy soundtracks to movies like The Dark Knight, The Lord Of The Rings: Fellowship Of The Ring (The Complete Recordings), and Gladiator you are going to be blown away by this score. Like the film District 9, Clinton Shorter comes out of left field and takes you completely by surprise with an unforgettable score that impressively mixes an emotional hybrid of South African native vocals with dark electronic and orchestral rhythm and suspense-driven percussion on tracks like Exosuit and Prawnkus to create a powerfully moving and epic soundtrack reminiscent of more accomplished veteran film composers like James Newton Howard, Howard Shore and Hans Zimmer. His previous composing credits were primarily scoring for Canadian television and short films including Director Neil Blomkamp's Alive In Joburg which was the inspiration for the theatrical film District 9 [Theatrical Release]. His ambitious score for D9 is one of the most creatively inspiring film scores I've heard in years and I eagerly look forward to hearing more of up-and-comer Clinton Shorter's work for years to come. The soundtrack is available only from Amazon.com and iTunes and contains just under 30 minutes of material and reasonably priced for under ten bucks it's definitely a keeper.District 9 (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) Overview

Li'l Abner (1956 Original Broadway Cast) ReviewAt long last, this must-own recording is available in a properly remastered, easy-to-find CD. This is the kind of show Broadway doesn't have any more: Not a blockbuster, but a good solid hit that made money and kept audiences entertained for two years with jokes, great songs, smart staging and a perfect cast. Much of the fun of the show is preserved on producer Goddard Lieberson's Broadway cast recording, which has now been improved by the addition of 10 minutes' worth of material that didn't make it onto the LP, including the big ballet and an expanded version of the finale. There's also a lot of good stuff here that was dropped in the movie version, such as the biting "Oh, Happy Day" and the encore verses of "Jubilation T. Cornpone." Apart from the overture and ballet, the recording is in mono, but the sound is excellent nonetheless, with the engineers capturing all the detail of Phil Lang's raucous orchestrations. Above all, this recording is to be savored for Johnny Mercer's lyrics, perhaps the finest -- and certainly the funniest -- work of this master songwriter. This CD reissue features plenty of photos and notes, and the only quibble I have is that it doesn't feature a plot synopsis. But if you like musical comedy, you've got to have this CD.Li'l Abner (1956 Original Broadway Cast) Overview

Jessie James ReviewIf you are considering purchasing this album (for the formidable price of...$1.99), I would go right ahead. All of Jessie's songs are well done and her voice is just fine and dandy. As I was listening to the album all the way through, I found myself singing along, bopping around in my chair and occasionally laughing out loud, not in derision, but in delight at the humor and general fun of some of the songs lyrics. The tunes are catchy and Jessie's singing is just as good or better, in spots, than a lot of the other young women topping the charts. So, perhaps the nay-sayers will give her another listen, with the mind set that she's here to entertain us, not to change our lives and save our souls.Jessie James Overview2009 debut album from the new Pop princess. Recorded in Los Angeles, New York, Nashville, and London, the album takes off with 'Wanted', the full-throttle Dance-Rock scorcher that Jessie co-wrote with American Idol judge and hit songwriter Kara DioGuardi. There's also 'Bullet', a catchy Rock gem co-written with pal Katy Perry.

Kundun: Music From The Original Soundtrack ReviewThis is vintage Glass. If you like "Koyaanisqatsi", you should like "Kundun". Like all of Glass's work, this one takes some time to get into, but once you've heard it, it becomes compelling, hypnotic, even addictive.
One of the reviewers below complains that this music isn't Tibetan enough. This is like complaining that Beethoven doesn't use Flemish folk songs enough. If you want traditional Tibetan music, buy some. If you want Philip Glass, buy "Kundun".
It's true that the music is vaguely reminiscent of "Koyaanisqatsi". This is not necessarily a bad thing, "Koyaanisqatsi" being one of Glass's greatest works.
Some of the music is also reminiscent of Bernard Herrman's score for "Journey to the Center of the Earth". Since Glass is a Minimalist instead of a Romantic like Herrman, however, don't expect to hear the great bursts of emotion you find in "Journey to the Center of the Earth". On the other hand, Herrman followed the action of the movie so closely that his score sounds like a series of unconnected pieces. "Kundun" is far more unified, and you feel like you've heard a symphony when it's over.
One of the reviewers complains that the orchestra doesn't seem to contain many Tibetan instruments. I wonder how many Westerners can recognize Tibetan instruments when they hear them. If you look at traditional non-Western instruments all over the world, you find the same general themes over and over again: flutes (like the Andean pan-pipes), horns (like the Tibetan horns heard in this music), drums, and stringed instruments (like the Chinese biba or the Japanese koto). It takes a sensitive ear to hear the difference between one of these instruments and the Western equivalent.Kundun: Music From The Original Soundtrack Overview

The Sylvers - Greatest Hits Review"Greatest Hits"? There are some groups whom you really can't appreciate if you know nothing but their hits--groups that, for all their unevenness, produce enough good music to earn a special place in the hearts of listeners avid for something more than catchy tunes. And while The Sylvers can't claim to deserve "retrospectives," and will never have afficianadoes raving about unreleased recordings, they deserve better than to have their early work completely ignored by this compilation. So if by some miracle you like the Sylvers' music, but weren't around back in the mid-70s (before the silliness of disco and the wretched "Boogie Fever"), then do yourself a favor: try to get recordings of the first three Sylvers' albums (entitled, respectively, The Sylvers, The Sylvers II, and The Sylvers III). The first sports a photograph of the original six Sylvers, and though time may have made the absolutely huge afros the Sylvers' men wear a little comical, you will have to agree that never in the history of music has there been a group whose members, male and female, were so incredibly beautiful! As for the music, the Sylvers may suffer in comparison to the Jackson 5 (as they were known then) because their music was not as infectious, but then, as far as musical sophistication goes, the Sylvers were infinitely more inventive. To hear this, you need only consider the fact that the Jackson 5 were mostly earthy energy, while the Sylvers could combine earthiness with the angelic: For earthiness, listen to "So Close" from The Sylvers, or their first hit, "Fools Paradise"--a bit of social commentary way beyond anything the Jackson 5 were groomed for. But what you really want to enjoy in the Sylvers are the vocal arrangements: the Sylvers really show what is possible when there is no lead singer, because whoever the main character of the song is, the voice is now masculine now feminine, now individual now choral--and at times the lead singer for the moment actually responds to the chorus, as in some of the popular songs from the 40s. The effect is brilliant, because the arrangement permits them to weave their voices in and out. The magical glissando of the simple cry "Oh!" in "How Love Hurts" (from their first album) always sends shivers down my spine; and then there is "I'll Never Be Ashamed Again," with its complex vocal lines and a musical collage that is glittering, sassy, and yearning--a truly incredible mix. From Sylvers II, there is their cover of "Yesterday," which they do a cappella, the sensuous, at times funkily stately "Through the Love in My Heart," the prayerful nostalgia of "I Remember," and the giddily spiritual climax of "Cry of A Dreamer." From Sylvers III, I recommend "Could Be You," with its wonderful shifts in musical mood and "Want You Be My Love." The only problem with the Sylvers is that it is sometimes just plain impossible to understand what they're saying--I defy anyone, for instance, to tell me what the chorus sings towards the close of "Cry of A Dreamer," (Sylvers II); at other times, some of the lines can be plain bad: "Through the Love in My Heart" sports the execrable line "and by then we will determine if we are truly meant for each other," which sings well, but it is not poetry. Despite these faults, along with what for me are indifferent songs, I think the Sylvers are really underappreciated--if for nothing else, they show how soul music can have the vocal complexity of Italian madrigals. Best of all, I first heard their music back in 1973 and 1974--and then left the albums at my mother's place until 1998; so I rediscovered this music after 25 years, and found it fresh, original, and full with a sheer loveliness that is present in both vocals and orchestrations. Don't let the market dictate what you can hear! Find the original Sylvers and let them show you their little corner of heaven. The Sylvers - Greatest Hits Overview

Alexander ReviewAlexander, King of Macedon, Captain General of the Greeks, Shahanshah of Persia, Lord of Asia, son of Zeus-Ammon, Iskander Gojastak (Alexander the Cursed), Dhu L'Kairnan (the two horned), Alexander the Great. A figure as well known as Alexander has been known by at least the proverbial ninety and nine names. Some modern historians consider him to be the worst butcher in history, others regard him as the most significant figure of the Hellenic world. All of this and more will surely reemerge with the release of Oliver Stone's film "Alexander." It seems inane to worry about what musical sound should be associated with this historical colossus. But that is exactly the task given to the famous Greek composer Vangelis. To be fair no one has any accurate idea of what music in Alexander's tent may have sounded like. Most likely it would not work well in a twenty first century film, or a club in downtown Athens. But Vangelis has been equal to the task on numerous occcasions including incredible scores for "Chariots of Fire," "Blade Runner," and "1492." But in all three of these scores there was a common strength and weakness. All three possessed outstanding main themes, but suffered with rather mundane music in other parts of the score. Thus his "greatest hits" wears much better than the entire soundtracks from these films. With "Alexander," however, we have more of a comprhensive film score. There are still references to what might be considered period music and the various exotica that ply the edges of new age cliche, and some over the top choral arrangements, but as a sountrack album this works better than earlier recordings. The main strength is still a marvelous main theme, first heard in "Titans" that transforms into percussion driven battle music with "The Drums of Gaugamela," and reappears both triumphantly and mystically in "Dream of Babylon." These are the grand higlights of this very good score. The weakness of many composers is that they hit on a good theme and then beat it to death. Here Vangelis leaves us wanting more of that main theme, or more variations on it. It is unclear how this score will work with the film itself, but as a soundtrack album this is a worthy achievement that will, no doubt, strike a solid chord with many parts of the modern audience. Nicely produced and packaged by Sony.Alexander Overview

Nick & Nora's Infinite Playlist Soundtrack (Vinyl LP) ReviewThe soundtrack is missing "All The Wine" by The National. Scent Of A Woman: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack ReviewAs a matter of fact I bought this CD not as much due to Mr. Newman's original scrore, but since I liked very much the treatment of the beatiful Spanish song "La Violetera" in key moments of the film. Mr. Newman's music is very good, but the Spanish and Argentine music he used was much better. The performances of "The Tango Project" are superb. "La Violetera" is probably the nicest Spanish song, talking of a florist; it is widely known in its original version in Spain and Latin America, and moreover, came to international light thanks to Charles Chaplin's "City Lights" where it was the Leitmotif of the blind florist girl (a very adequate use indeed). The tango "Por una Cabeza" is probably the highlight of the score, because it is the piece danced by Al Pacino; unfortunately the other tango "Caminito", played by the orchestra at the restaurant, does not appear here. It is a petty. As a whole, I like the CD very much, especially the two performances of "The Tango Project", but just because they are more touching to my cultural heritage. Nonetheless, I praise both Mr. Newman's personal compositions as well as his perfect use of other's melodies.Scent Of A Woman: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Overview

Trainspotting #2: Music From The Motion Picture, Vol. #2 Review"If truth be telt," as Begy would say, give or take a few songs from each CD, one Trainspotting soundtrack would suffice. I for one find this soundtrack to be vastly better than the "orange" (first) Trainspotting soundtrack. Although Trainspotting #2 has its pros and cons, its pros greatly outweigh its cons, resulting in my giving it a 5-star review. OK, let's get to the best bits first (titles are in 3 classes [best, worst, ordinary] followed by track-order). "The Passenger" by Iggy Pop is a catchy little ditty which, though not included in the film, definitely merited inclusion/is even worthy to replace Pop's "Lust for Life" as Trainspotting's theme song; "Dark & Long" [Dark Train Mix] by Underworld is the song that's playing when the lead character, Renton, is having bizarre nightmares in the teenage bedroom of his parents' house. It is one of Underworld's many electronic epics and I can't praise it enough; "Golden Years" by David Bowie is a classic and was included on this album because it was the original track that Diane was to sing to Renton as he was coming off heroin in the aforementioned bedroom. Fair enough;"A Final Hit" [full-length version] is just a "prolonged" version - only by a minute or so - of the edit which is on the orange soundtrack. Still great;"Temptation" by Heaven 17 is the song playing in/outside the club when Renton is accosting Diane;"Our Lips Are Sealed" by Fun Boy Three is a great tune à la New Order, and the reason it is included is because it was going to be used in the film but the correct spot for it could not be found (the director and producer felt that they related strongly to the group of friends in the story);"Atmosphere" by Joy Division was only included on the album because director Danny Boyle is from Manchester. It's very dark yet melodic, like most Joy Division songs;"Inner City Life" by Goldie is a great song in itself but its inclusion on this soundtrack is questionable: it was only included on the album because author Irvine Welsh stated that "It's what the characters would be listening to now";Born Slippy Nuxx [Darren Price Mix] by Underworld is possibly the best (re)mix of this song, and I've heard many, including the brilliant Deep Pan mix. Now to the two not-so-good tracks - sod it, they're just plain awful: "Choose Life" by PF Project is Renton's "Choose life" monologue superimposed on incredibly long, tedious, cheesy techno music; "Nightbclubbing" [Baby Doc Remix] is ineffably awful: just think of what would happen if you played incredibly amateur techno music with the lyrics and music from "Nightclubbing" at the end, albeit in an almost unrecognizable incarnation. The remaining tracks on the album, which I would rate half-decent are: "Habanera from Carmen", the classical music playing while Renton is citing the list of items needed to withdraw from heroin; "Statuesque" by Sleeper can best be described as "chick rock which really rocks", I believe it was used very briefly in the film; "Think About the Way" by Ice MC is the dance music playing when Renton moves to London. It's quite good; "Come Together" by Primal Scream is the epitome of 90's rock and, according to the liner notes, its admission in the album is the same as "Our Lips are Sealed" by Fun Boy Three. I'll consummate my review with an apposite quote from the late Frank Zappa: "Rock journalists are people who can't write, writing about people who can't play, for people who can't read."Trainspotting #2: Music From The Motion Picture, Vol. #2 OverviewImport pressing features alternate artwork to the US version. 14 track compilation - music from the film, plus music that inspired the filmmakers or has been inspired by the film.Features the exclusive Baby Doc remix of Iggy Pop's 'Nightclubbing' and the full length version of Leftfield's'A Final Hit', avaiable in full for the first time! Velvet Goldmine: Music From The Original Motion Picture ReviewWe live in fictitious times where fictitious bands release fictitious albums. The movie VELVET GOLDMINE told the story of made-up rock stars, based in no small part upon the real lives of some of the more notable glam rockers of the late-60s and early-70s. The soundtrack therefore is split between fiction and reality (or as close to reality that glam got, which, to be honest, isn't that close). Many of the songs are taken from that era of rock, while the rest are modern (1998) recordings of both cover versions of songs from that time as well as recent writings done in that style.
This is one of my favorite albums, and I say that as a casual fan of both the original era and of the bands today that are heavily influenced by that musical genre. It's not meant to be a beginner's course in glam music, but it serves that purpose well anyway. We've got the dreamy, atmospheric, pretentious songs, the fast rockers, the goofy songs about spaceships, etc. This is great campy, fun music, and it's, as the CD case states "to be played at maximum volume". The modern recreations of the glam style are done extremely well. Since most of the bands were already heavily drinkers at the well of neo-glam (Pulp, that's you), presumably performing these songs weren't a stretch for them at all.
A lot of famous names from today's music scene pop up in the credits for this album. Thom York, better known as the little guy from Radiohead, sings on a few of the tracks performed by the Venus In Furs (one of the movie's fake bands; the name taken from The Velvet Underground song). And R.E.M. lead singer Michael Stipe is listed as producer.
An album that can be listened to all the way through without skipping substandard tracks is a rare thing indeed. What an album like that is also a soundtrack, it's almost a miracle. While this is a great overall CD, I will admit to fondness for some songs over others. A few times while driving home from work, I've repeated listening to Steve Harley's "Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me)" more times than is probably healthy and enough times that I would have received very odd looks had my fellow commuters been able to hear what I was up to.
Whether you're a fan of glam, or someone who would like to be, I think this is a great place to start. While the lack of any appearances by David Bowie himself does mean that the album lacks a major foundation in glam's short history (apparently he was planning his own semi-biographical film and wanted to focus on that instead), what's actually here is fantastic. Any album with Lou Reed's goofily surreal "Satellite of Love" on it is worth having, and I can recommend this to almost any rock fan who doesn't take music too seriously.Velvet Goldmine: Music From The Original Motion Picture Overview

The Illusionist ReviewI have just seen the wonderful new movie "The Illusionist" which was amazing in its own right. However I must say that the new score by Philip Glass enhances its impact considerably. For many, the genius composer has already produced his masterpiece with "The Hours" score. That is a wonderful work of art but I always felt his music suited better to period pieces, the only example of which up until now was his score for "The Secret Agent". Returning home I immediately played that album and I was sure of my opinion. Both his scores for The Secret Agent and The Illusionist have a grand baroque feeling in them, incredibly operatic and sensual as well. They sweep the listener effortlessly into a bygone area and almost tell the story of the film by themselves. One could watch both films without any dialogue and effects and can still feel satisfied with the end result. I take my hat off to the directors of the aforementioned films for their willingness to put aside all their egocentrical concerns and submit the outcomes of their months-spanning efforts to a man who obviously goes and tells the story of their films with music once again. Bravo Mr. Glass for this amazing new score!!!!The Illusionist OverviewMusic From The Film The Illusionist features an original score by acclained modern minimalist composer Philip Glass. Glass' renowned restrained, yet elegant style has captivated audiences around the world for years. "The soundtrack to The Illusionist is a driving force to the movie," comments director Neil Burger. "There are many scenes and sequences without dialogue and it falls to the music to tell the story." Glass recorded the original score with a large orchestra, which results in an emotionally driven and epic soundtrack.Glass' sophisticated music has been featured in numerous movies throughout his career, earning him many awards and critical praise.Award winning writer/director/actor Edward Norton stars alongside Jessica Biel and Paul Giamatti in The Illusionist.
