The Pixies - Sell Out (2005) ReviewIt was the tour that no one thought would ever happen. In 1992, the Pixies were on top of the world. While they hadn't quite broken through into the mainstream in the United States, they were a huge hit in England, almost reaching stadium status. They played some of the largest European rock `n' roll festivals and even opened for U2. And then their lead singer Black Francis announced that the band had broken up.
Black Francis and Kim Deal seemed as if they would never bury the hatchet and fans would never see their beloved band together again. And then it was announced last year that the Pixies were indeed going to be re-forming for a tour in select cities in Europe and the U.S. Anticipation was high and, if you were lucky enough to see them live, reportedly they did not disappoint. Now, you can get an idea of what it was like with this new DVD that gives you a sample of the band live in concert.
Black Francis' voice sounds as ferocious as it ever did. He gives it a good workout on "Something Against You" and "U-Mass," the latter a giddy, psychotic ode to the University of Massachusetts. Later on, he tears it up on "Tame," alternating between almost-whispered verses and deranged howling choruses. Joey is still the unsung, low-key guitar god he always was, delivering the insanely catchy riffs that the Pixies were revered for.
They pull out such memorable hits like "Monkey Gone to Heaven" and "Here Comes Your Man" along with underrated gems like the surreal "Subbacultcha." The only minor, personal caveat I have with the DVD is the short shrift given to the criminally underrated and much maligned Bossanova album. Only a dreamy, surf-soaked rendition of "Velouria" is played in their set. Also, their misunderstood swan song, Trompe Le Monde is also largely ignored in favour of older material.
There is a selection of 14 songs performed on the 2004 tour all over the world with optional interview segments from two of their long-time tour crew members. One of my personal favourites, "Planet of Sound" gets a fine workout in New Orleans while the Bossanova album is shown more love with a nice rendition of "Is She Weird" in Lowell, MA.
Finally, there is "MX Monkey's Choice" which allows you to switch from six different angles with your DVD remote while watching a live version of "Monkey Gone to Heaven."The Pixies - Sell Out (2005) OverviewIn 1992 the Pixies disbanded after releasing four acclaimed albums and one mini-album in a five-year period. Joe Satriani: Live in Paris - I Just Wanna Rock (2010) ReviewI have to begin by saying I have been a Joe Satriani fan for over 20 years. I've seen him multiple times in concert, own his entire collection on CD, all the DVDs, etc. I am a huge fan. Let's face it though, the reason virtually any (all) Satriani fans buy his DVDs is to watch the man play guitar. I never grow tired of watching his skill at playing and the music he makes; in a word, amazing.
Having said that, this DVD is virtually unwatchable. The editing is horrible in that it jumps and cuts all over the place. You never have an opportunity to sit and watch Joe play. The effects are over-the-top and completely ruin the DVD for me. It's as though his editor just learned how to use Adobe After Effects and thought it would be uber cool to use every effect in the software over and over again. Virtually every second has some stupid effect ruining the video. There are sunbursts coming off Joe's head and an almost constant halo effect around him. I cannot sit and watch this video for more than 90 seconds before feeling motion sick. It took me multiple attempts to get through the entire video and this comes from someone who has watched the 'Live in San Francisco' DVD hundreds of times. As an example, I was very excited about "Time Machine" being on this DVD since it has long been a favorite of mine and Joe rarely, if ever, plays that song live. On the DVD, during that song, Joe appears to be having an out-of-body experience. I don't even know how best to describe it, it is off the charts weird and totally unnecessary.
Maybe that is the best way to describe this DVD, it's unnecessary. You never get an opportunity to watch Joe play, at least not without 50+ effects, per song, ruining the experience. With Chet Atkins, the proof is in the pudding.
You just have to see him play and that eliminates all the talk.
This compilation is right in the middle of the time of early video and
embarrasing wardrobe of the late 70's and early 80's; However, Chet Atkins is an inspirational guitar player and when he starts playing it's
a treat to the eyes and ears.
The Soundstage performance of Stars and Stripes Forever alone is worth the price of this video. That is one amazing execution!
Guitar players will appreciate how difficult that first chord of Cascade is, yet Chet Atkins makes it look like a walk in the park.
You need to view Yankee Doodle Dixie more than once to appreciate the guitar arrangement and realize that Chet plays Yankee Doodle and Dixie
at the same time!
Those who play the guitar seriously, those who know how much practice and dedication it takes to get to this level, will enjoy this DVD the most.
Chet Atkins always made it look like butter. It is no exception in this disc.
So, get the video, stop complaining and get to practice.
Chet Atkins Rare Performances should inspire you until your fingers fall off.

Paul Gilbert: Get Out of My Yard (2007) Review3 words...BUY...THIS...DVD!!! Over 2 hours of the most intense shred you've ever seen in your life! Every song, yes, EVERY song from the Get Out of My Yard (GOMY) album is covered highlighting the main sections of each song. Only downside is there's no on-screen tab and no tab booklet included, but the closeups on Paul's fingers are great and you should have no trouble following along. Awesome live performances of some songs from GOMY after the lesson section and even technique is covered (hammer-ons/pull-offs, arpeggios, and--my favorite--alternate picking). Frank Zappa: Apostrophe / Over-Nite Sensation ReviewThis is the best Classic Albums episode - right up there with The Band episode IMO. There's lots of vintage footage included that I'd never seen (and I have a so-called comprehensive collection), and wonderful interviews with former band members like George Duke, the Underwoods, the Fowler brothers, Steve Vai, Ralph Humphrey, Dweezil and Gail, and of course the man himself Napoleon Murphy friggin Brock. IMO Ruthie steals the show but they're all good. The whole package tells an amazingly comprehensive story of the 73-74 period with lots of passion and humor.
Dweezil sits behind the board for a number of songs and lets us really dig in and hear the more tender nuances and demonstrates how the combinations of instruments and voices fit together (listen for Tina Turner - wow). I must say the Dweeze gets a little wordy, often talking over the music rather than letting it speak for itself. Small complaint though. There's also snippets of ZPZ rehearsals for the Summer 07 tour (BTW, WHY ARE YOU SKIPPING DENVER THIS YEAR?!?! ')
The highlight for me (and probably many others) are the extended video clips of the '73 ROXY shows. These concerts are considered by some as the 'holy grail' of live Zappa. We know the tapes exist, we know there's been talk of releasing them for several years now, I don't care how grainy they are or even if they're edited poorly... PLEASE OH PLEASE STOP TEASING US AND RELEASE ALL THIS IMPORTANT, PRECIOUS CONCERT FOOTAGE ASAP!!! (are you listening Zappa Family Trust?)
Lastly, the extended and deleted clips are all gems not to be missed.
There are probably other details I'm forgetting, but definitely pick this one up even if you're just a casual fan of THE MAN HIMSELF. This DVD is an education for olde tyme fans as well, so Enjoy(tm) !

Back To Budokan (2009) ReviewHere's my review without trying to spoil it for anybody. When I first heard Mr. Big back in the late 80's I was addicted to that rush from the start. I've seen them live and own all of their cd's (including their solos) and always thought they were some of the best musicians/artists in the business. 20 years later and I feel the same way! When Paul left and the bad went separate ways shortly after that it was a huge let down. They are top notch artists that truly love what they do. So when I heard they were getting back together in early 2009 with all 4 original members I was pumped. Only to find out they were going to pretty much tour in Japan and Europe. Their following in Japan is huge so I get that. Hopefully they will play some dates together here in the US. Doubtful, but I can only hope they show up at the House of Blues here in Cleveland soon. Now as far as this DVD is concerned, Mr. Big Back at the Budokan is amazing and unfortunately for now the only way to see their next time around tour. First off, all 4 members sound amazing and play their hearts out. What I really enjoy about this band is that they just jam and have fun. It helps they are all great at what they do including the vocal harmonies. The Double Human Capo and Smoke on the water in this set list proves they like to have a lot of fun and mix things up. They truly put on a great show and it shows they love playing in Japan. The audience is something I noticed. Nobody's drinking beer and falling all over the place. Everyone's by their seats, there's no screaming and yelling during the songs but the audience is very involved and sings along when prompted. The audio is great and the video is excellent with several cameras all over the place including some video from Paul's and Billy's guitar necks. Very cool! Pat Torpey and Billy Sheehan are spot on and Billy is just amazing to watch on Bass Guitar. Very talented! Eric Martin in my opinion has always been in my top 5 as far as singers, right up there with Paul Rogers, Freddie Mercury and Jim Morrison. Call me crazy, but man can Eric sing. There's something smooth yet a little abrasive, bluesy and rock all wrapped up into his voice that is just great and Eric sounds better than ever here. Just listen to the Live acoustic bonus footage on disc 2 and see for yourself. Now for Paul Gilbert. Let's face it, he could always play but it seems he has really grown over the last few years. Pick up his solo cd's titled Get out of my yard and Silence followed by a deafening roar and you'll be blown away. He is a blast to watch and rips it up on guitar. Paul plays fast, furious but stays sharp and hits those notes. He plays the drums on one song as well which is a treat to see. But Paul Gilbert is another musician that is high up there on my top guitarists list. This double DVD comes packaged nicely in a booklet style with great pictures and some basic info inside. Disc 1 has most of the show and disc 2 has the encores with some nice extras and bonus footage. This includes a very cool video of the song Next time Around with some video footage of the old days when they had hair down to their, well you know. It also has an acoustic performance at the Hard Rock that sounds awesome. The only negative, which is minor and had to be done for some reason is that you have to put in DVD 2 for the encores therefore the show doesn't run together. No big deal. I would recommend this DVD to any Mr. Big fan, no matter how Big, or little they are. I was lucky to get it at $14.99 here on Amazon and it's worth the money. I was also a little shocked there hasn't been a review yet, so I hope this helps in your decision.Back To Budokan (2009) OverviewDouble DVD set recorded during the Next Time Around Tour in 2009. Carl Perkins & Friends: Blue Suede Shoes - A Rockabilly Session (2006) ReviewI've had the original VHS version of this classic rockabilly special for years, and it still remains my favorite concert video ever. It's great to finally have this available on DVD after all these years for today's music fans to discover. Roy Orbison's "Black and White Night" and Chuck Berry's "Hail Hail Rock n' roll" are the only two concert videos that capture the true spirit of early rock n' roll the way this show does.
The legendary Carl Perkins is one of the often overlooked singer-songwriter-guitar players of early rock n' roll who had one big hit in the 1950's before a car crash stopped the momentum of his career right as it was taking off. He never achieved the popularity or recognition that his peers Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Buddy Holly, and Elvis achieved. Recorded in London in October 1985, this priceless performance clearly shows he was in the same talent league as his better-known contemporaries. Perkins' country-rock vocal delivery and trademark rockabilly guitar licks are more potent here at age 54 than they were in his younger days.
Few concert videos capture the sheer joy of playing music on stage like this show does. When I saw this for the first time over ten years ago, I was blown away by the joy and spirit of the music that literally jumps off the screen until you find yourself watching it over and over. The music here, wonderfully directed by Dave Edmunds, is quite simply some of the greatest real deal rock n' roll ever performed on one stage. The musicians did a great job of recreating Perkins' classic songs in their original arrangements while making them rock like never before.
When all is said and done, this masterpiece should be hailed as one of the greatest rock n' roll shows ever captured on film! You can't help but like Carl Perkins after watching this show. The real beauty of this concert is the almost magical effect that Carl's presence had on all his famous guests. George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Dave Edmunds, and Roseanne Cash deliver some of the best performances of their careers as Perkins' music and enthusiasm brings out the best in everybody on the stage! George and Ringo have never sounded better, and seem more inspired here than they were with the Beatles. Ringo's drumming is rock steady, and Harrison shines like never before as he shows just how well he could play rockabilly guitar.
Eric Clapton's segment is dynamite as we watch him unleash some of the hottest guitar solos he has played since his glory years in the late 60's. Clapton TEARS IT UP with a scorching, jaw-dropping solo during "Mean Woman Blues" that is worth the price of the DVD alone, and Carl's amazed reaction to Eric is priceless! Watch closely for a great moment during "Matchbox" when Carl suddenly jumps back in disbelief while watching Eric rip into his first solo. I love it!
This show is pure joy from start to finish, but the best is saved for last with a truly FANTASTIC performance of "Blue Suede Shoes" that is nothing more than rock n' roll at its joyful best! Anybody who still associates this song with Elvis needs to hear Perkins tear into it with his heart and soul in this performance. Watching Carl and his friends rock their hearts out with the audience dancing all over the place is probably the highlight of the entire show. George Harrison is so caught up in the music that he suddenly leads the band into a rousing encore of the song. Dave Edmunds sums up the electricity of the moment as he turns to Carl and shouts "ROCK IT MAN!"
The most touching moment comes after the show has ended when Carl, unaware that the cameras are still taping, is moved to tears of joy while giving a heartfelt thank you to everyone there. The warmth and sincerity of the man is truly admirable as he showers every guest with kind words of praise throughout the show.
The music world lost a fine musician and human being when Carl Perkins passed away in 1998. This unforgettable show will stand as a great tribute to his spirit, music, influence, and talent. If pure three-chord rock n' roll is your thing, this DVD is your ticket to paradise!

Where the Wild Things Are (2009) ReviewI know others will go deep with analysis of this product, so I will just state what I think is the most important element. This show seems to have been edited by someone who is not only aware of this type of music, but also a fan. I cannot handle nonstop 2 second cuts to every camera view that I could care less about. The days of the frantic MTV style video presentation are OVER. This DVD is perfect in that aspect, when Steve is going for the "part", you WILL get to see it. And there is also just the right amount of effects and movement to keep it interesting & fresh. Any musician who actually cares about the music, should pay attention to "Where the Wild Things Are" and use this as a reference point for any Producer or Director who will be in charge of presenting an artists true vision in the arena of concert recording. The Strat Pack: Live in Concert ReviewLet's cut to the chase, shall we? The reason I obtained this dvd was because I love guitar and want to obtain the best guitar dvds out there. This DVD is pretty darn lame for a show that's supposed to be celebrating the Fender Stratocaster electric guitar on the occasion of it's 50th Anniversary, a huge milestone for a pop culture icon. There are basically two reasons to buy it: Gary Moore's incendiary tribute to Jimi Hendrix on "Red House," so hot it will melt your dvd player, and David Gilmour's three songs.
The rest is pretty tepid and the roster features some no-name talent that have NO Business being on that stage: Theresa Andersson!? Who? Yeah, she plays guitar, but she's a rhythm player. Jamie Cullum?! Who?! Nobody in his band even PLAYS guitar! What were these producers even thinking putting a keyboard band like this on the bill, LET ALONE the video? Amy Winehouse?! Who? She's a weak singer that can barely hold her own on Karoake Night at Billy Bob's BBQ-O-Rama and would got stomped by "American Idol's" Simon.
A few other fret-grinders play well: Hank Marvin (great version of "Sleepwalk"), Albert Lee, and Brian May. Paul Rodgers is in excellent voice. Joe Walsh slogs through four tunes, but his playing here cannot hold a candle to his monumental performance on Clapton's "Crossroad" Guitar concert DVD. He looks very tired and shagged out.
The All-Star jam at the end is awful, mostly because they chose a poor vehicle for guitar soloing, Rod Stewart's "Stay With Me."
Where were the rest of the Stratocaster greats? Ever hear of a guy named Eric Clapton? Fender even sells a Clapton Strat model. If I am organizing this show, I organize it around Clapton's schedule and I don't do it without him! How about Richie Blackmore, Yngvie Malmsteen, Jeff Beck (another guy you cannot do a Strat tribute show without), Mark Knopfler, and a slew of others I am no doubt forgetting.
The packaging for the DVD is so poor it bears commenting. The DVD's graphic design is incredibly weak...it drags the entire product into B-grade level. Staid and trite font choices along with cookie-cutter presentation of photos is at a quality level high school seniors can produce in a few days in Photoshop. The producers, Eagel Rock Productions, either were too cheap to hire real graphic designers and artists or their staffers need to go back to design school for a few more years.
The show has a very UK-bent to it (shot in the UK at London's Wembley Arena), which is odd since Fender is an American company. How you stage a production like this for such an important occasion in rock and pop culture without the requisite talent is beyond me. A much better value for your money is Clapton's "Crossroads" Concert DVD. All this being said, it bears repeating that Gary Moore's "Red House" really captures the spirit of the celebrated electric guitar and the event. The producers of this show at least go that right, and it's one of the greatest versions of "Red House" I've ever heard.

People like Perbes from Spain and Kevin from Missouri need to shut their mouth about audio quality this, video quality that. Listen, if you are sitting on anything better we can watch of the original Skynyrd, then by all means start whining. But last time I checked, this release contains probably the best video and audio of the Ronnie fronted band around. So that makes me happy to see. Lastly, the video is from 1976, 28 years ago. If you're a true fan, you take what you can get, and leave the bitching to the losers with the $10,000 TV's and Audio systems who can't get this in 16:9 picture ratio and 5.1 dolby surround sound! Ghost Blues: The Story of Rory Gallagher & the Beat Club Sessions (2010) ReviewGhost Blues The Story Of Rory Gallagher is a must have for any Rory Gallagher fan or for anyone who simply loves the great Blues guitarists! This fantastic 2 disc dvd set covers the life of Rory Gallagher from his childhood in Ireland to his untimely death in England at the young age of 47. Born William Rory Gallagher on March 2, 1948, Rory was the first child of Daniel and Monica Gallagher, who both were musically talented with not only singing, but Daniel also played accordian. At around age 5 or 6, Rory loved to sing and play his songs on a little dimestore plastic ukelele. It wasn't long before Rory's parents bought him his first real wood guitar at the young age of 9. Rory quickly showed his natural talent and began winning talent contests, using the prize money to buy yet a better guitar. In 1961 Rory's parents bought him the very first Fender Stratocaster guitar in Ireland- a Sunburst model which cost 100 pounds. Rory's younger brother Donal tells many great stories about Rory on this dvd and about how this guitar might as well have cost 100 million pounds, as his parents went into great debt to afford this gift for Rory. Rory used this very famous guitar through every decade up until his death in 1995.
There are many very rare pictures, films and stories on this tremendous dvd about Rory. He was the first great Blues guitarist in Ireland who opened the doors for all the other great Irish bands such as Thin Lizzy, U2 and many others. There are also many great photos, stories and films from Rory's first band from the sixties, The Taste. Besides many great commentaries and stories from his brother Donal, we also hear from Bob Geldof, Bill Wyman, Cameron Crowe, his bandmates, many others and Rory himself on this dvd. The stories from his brother Donal are wonderful, as we hear how there were no blues bands in Ireland, so Rory had to learn everything from listening to Woody Guthrie, Lead Belly and other blues greats on the radio and tv. Rory's genius didn't stop with just the guitar, he also played slide guitar, alto saxophone, bass, mandolin, banjo, harmonica and coral sitar. He was well known playing at the Marquee Club in the U.K. sharing the stage with other greats such as Cream.
On the second dvd are rare, never before seen performances from The Beat Club Sessions in 1971 and 1972. These early, rare performances have been cleaned up so the picture looks absolutely fantastic with crisp colors and superb sound! The cameras showcase Rory's early guitar work and is a real treat to see up close! A very young Rory is joined by Gerry McAvoy on bass guitar and Wilgar Campbell on drums playing the following songs:

That is why most people, like me, received a CD instead of a DVD. However, Digital Row was aggressive in fixing the problem, and very courteous in the correspondence I had with them. I now have the DVD and it is great. If you are even just a casual Chet Atkins fan, you will love this show. Everyone of his guests (Emmylou, Waylon, Willie,etc.) has a tremendous respect for him and their performances show it. For me, the outstanding segment was at the close, when Chet sang "I Still Can't Say Goodbye", which he says always reminded him of his father. It is beautiful and very moving. David Gilmour in Concert - Live at Robert Wyatt's Meltdown (2002) ReviewFreed from the shackles of what Pink Floyd has become, David Gilmour sounds positively liberated on his new live DVD, David Gilmour in Concert. The years have snuck up on him, as it inevitably does to all of our heroes, but his voice is even more expressive now than it has ever been. He's actually becoming more like his long-estranged counterpart Roger Waters, and that's a good thing, a great thing in fact.
They are both world-weary veterans having finally arrived at similar crossroads in their lives after drifting apart in their not-so-distant youth. Both men's voices are thinning, sometimes straining to reach notes. While Waters is still the bleeding-heart poet, and Gilmour still the guitar virtuoso, both seem tired of the bloated excesses of the rock n' roll machine that had welcomed them with open arms all those years ago, instead opting to embrace a more deconstructed approach to performing.
Even moreso than Waters' latest hits tour, Gilmour has unearthed rarely performed gems and obscure covers, and has re-invented overplayed classics. The result is breathtaking. His take on Syd Barrett's seminal Terrapin is pure magic, and Dick Parry's sax solo on Shine On is a freeform revelation. It's this sense of experimentation that has been missing from Gilmour's repetoire since he and the Floyd recorded Dark Side. He's even managed to take his latter-day Floyd tunes into exciting new directions. Take High Hopes for example, what once sounded somewhat inflated and bombastic confined to its awkward Floyd-by-numbers construct, has now taken on a more stripped and organic flavor. Even his lyrics play better without the baggage of the brand name. It's also wonderful to see Richard Wright, playing Breakthrough from his own Broken China album, sounding relaxed and beautiful.
Much of the beauty of the performances is in the rawness of the sound; often times you can hear each finger slide down the fret, each bend of the string. It's a clear and pristine recording to be sure, but it's not sterile and perfect, it's live, alive. Listening to the 5.1 surround, you could swear Gilmour is just feet away, acoustic guitar slung over his shoulder, entertaining guests at an intimate gathering.
The bonus features are equally rewarding. Gilmour's cover of "Don't", the Leiber and Stoller song made classic by Elvis Presley, is heart-wrenchingly beautiful, and his rendering of Shakespeare's Sonnet 18, with Michael Kamen, is sublime.
I was quite frankly shocked at how much I enjoyed this DVD. I've already played it more times than I've played Waters' excellent In The Flesh Live. I'd nearly forgotten how definitive Gilmour's guitar sound is, and how much I missed his voice. It's truly the sound of a wisened man with nothing to prove, a man no longer haunted by the ghost of Roger Waters. If this release is any indication of things to come, I will be waiting with just as much anticipation for Gilmour's next solo album as I am for Roger's, and praying for old friends to make amends.David Gilmour in Concert - Live at Robert Wyatt's Meltdown (2002) Overview

Eric Clapton: Crossroads Guitar Festival (2004) ReviewI was lucky to attend the festival in Dallas this summer. While the songs selected for the DVD aren't always the ones I would have picked (Buddy Guy blew everyone else away, but he is conspicuously absent except for the ensemble numbers), this is nontheless sure to be a great DVD. Clapton was brilliant as usual, Santana was fantastic and ZZ Top were their usual eccentric selves.
John Mayer, Jonny Lang and Robert Randolph were all excellent newcomers in the mostly over-50 lineup. Jimmie Vaughan and his Tilt-a-whirl band served as a fantastic houseband, backing up the many blues legends on hand.
Some disappointing omissions ... Robert Randolph's "I Need More Love" ,a surprising show-stealer on the second day of the festival is not listed. Same with John Mayer's "Come Back To Bed". Styx put on a surprisingly good set of cover tunes, from the Beatles' "I Am The Walrus" to BB King's "The Thrill Is Gone". Also, Eric Clapton's set on the third day included a nice selection of songs from his new album of Robert Johnson covers that are omitted here.
That said, I still pre-ordered my copy as soon as I saw it announced. David Gilmour: Remember That Night - Live from the Royal Albert Hall (2007) ReviewLiterally worth five times the price and an equal in it's own way to PULSE, with intimacy and a freer feel offsetting the more minimal lighting (although enormously impressive in its own right.)
As the other reviewers have given an accurate overview I'll just mention one cut, that being "Comfortably Numb," which you and I know every second of by heart, it's in our blood.
This performance features David Bowie sharing lead vocals. Now the idea of anyone but Mr. Gilmour taking over vocals on this song is enough to make my hair catch on fire, but THIS WORKS. It actually becomes a Bowie song while remaining a Floyd epoch. It's thrilling, it's almost dreamlike to watch a singer of equal caliber and credibility to Mr. Gilmour share this song and to take it's inherent drama and mystery to another level entirely.
The DVD also points out what a superb disc "On An Island" is, sadly overlooked by too many Floyd fans for not being heavy enough (man.)
And it's in high def - you can almost reach out and shake Rick Wright's hand.
Extras are top flight, set is an incredible bargain and you'll have trouble turning it off and going to bed. Joe Bonamassa Live from the Royal Albert Hall (2009) ReviewWatching this DVD, the same feeling kept washing over me, song after song. It was a feeling of intense pride. I've been witness to the ever expanding vision and hard work Joe Bonamassa has put into his music. No artist over the last decade has captivated me quite like Joe has. Each new release adds yet another layer. And he never makes us wait too long for the next chapter. I've been fortunate to see Joe perform live several times in a variety of venues. Then came RAH.
It's the biggest show of Joe's life and he most certainly is up for the occasion. The venue is magnificent. The crowd is completely engaged. The band is as tight as Bogie's snare. And Joe is on fire. Having everything come together after 20 years has obvious special meaning to Joe. But watching this document of what he has accomplished in my 6+ years as a Joe Bonamassa fan holds special meaning to me as well. I've been an avid record collector and concert goer for over 30 years. In that time, I've never felt more proud to be a fan than I felt while watching this DVD.
For the technical minded, you have the choice of 3 audio streams, Dolby stereo, Dolby 5.1 surround, Dolby DTS surround. The intro sequence really builds up and sets the stage for the show. Camera work is great and features not only well chosen shots of the artists, but within the context of an historic venue. Edits/cuts/changes are appropriately restrained. What may be most surprising of all is that they chose to not overly compress the video and cram it all on one disc. 230 minutes are spread across two discs. This is how a music DVD should be!
After having watched this DVD a few times now, I'd like to add a little more about the performance itself:
- Joe translates live far, far better than most artists. In my opinion, Joe is a brilliant live artist who happens to make great studio records too. I can't decide if Joe's greatest strength is his phenomenal guitar playing or his amazing voice. Both are simply incredible on this DVD.
- I love what Carmine has added to the band over the last couple of years. He brings a flowing musicality that perfectly complements rather than competes with Joe. He is a talented veteran and it shows. The Buddah statue is kinda cool too.
- I was a little nervous when Joe made keyboards a permanent part of the band. I listen to guitar based music to hear . . . the guitar. But Rick is one crafty son of a gun. He doubles Joe's guitar harmonies, adds mood and texture to the background, and does some very nice vocal harmonies on several songs. He steps out here and there with some tasty piano parts that are quite enjoyable. Rick has been a GREAT addition to the band.
- Anyone who thinks the 2 drummer concept is gimicky needs to see this DVD. Watching Bogie and Anton synchronize with each other was quite interesting. It made me pay more attention to the drumming than I usually do, and gave me new found respect for the power and complexity that the drums add to Joe's music.
- Oops. I almost forgot about the horn section. It reminded me how much I enjoyed the early 90's Gary Moore tours that included the Midnight Horns. Here they are used with restraint so as not to crowd the songs which were generally not written with horn parts. The sax solo during Asking Around For You is expecially nice.
Great music DVDs need to complement the music with compelling visuals. There are probably few scenes in the 200+ music DVDs I own that are as dramatic as when Joe climbs up on stage equipment and hoists the Flying V over his head at the conclusion of Just Got Paid with the camera shooting from behind him at floor level. It Might Get Loud (2009) ReviewCaught this film yesterday and all I can say is wow. If you like music, guitars or any combination of the two catch this one on the big screen. Then you can easily decide if you need to add this dvd to your music archives. The progression of stories and how they are told is excellent, as well as the music presented. [...]
I came here yesterday after getting home from the matinee to see if there might be a "soundtrack" available to accompany this movie. There's probably enough material here (Link Wray, Son House etc.) to make a sweet multi-disc collection. It may seem like an odd combination of guitar players, but all three are well represented and there are too many highlights to mention. Seeing these guys playing bottleneck slide guitar together on "In My Time Of Dying" is worth the price of admission by itself.
