The Return of Spinal Tap (1992) ReviewWhile nothing, absolutely nothing, can compete with the original "This is Spinal Tap" for comedic genius, this DVD is a brilliant work in it's own right. While it is true that the majority (maybe 75 percent or so) of the film is a live show shot in the Royal Albert Hall in 1992, there are numerous interludes and links to keep the satire quotient pegged.
All in all the music is performed well, but some of the newer materiel falls a bit flat compared to the "Smell the Glove" set. Songs like "Cash on Delivery" and "Clam Caravan", while vaguely amusing are not up to the normal Tap standards (although Nigel playing the clarinet is quite a sight), and the Rap version of "Sex Farm" was just plain annoying. Having said that, there are moments of inspired brilliance here. During "Stonehenge" they have the opposite problem they had in the original...the monument is too huge to get in the theatre. During "Big Bottom" all three play basses, which is not only funny to think about, but very funny to actually hear. The guitar pyrotechnics and way over the top soloing of Nigel Tufnel continue in "Diva Fever", a forgettable song without the solo. During this particular solo (during which Derek takes a cab and gets a huge meal at a restaurant, while David has a cucumber facial and pedicure) Nigel plays his guitars by throwing horseshoes at them, juggling while playing with his feet, etc.
Interspersed with the concert footage are numerous links, most of which are utterly brilliant. We learn that Nigel has invented a folding wine glass (he still needs the rubber hinges), and has founded 'Travel for Animals', an organization that allows animals (in this case his ferret, Trevor) to travel with their own passport. We learn that Derek goes on his father's telephone sanitizing service ('Sani Phone') business calls with him to help make ends meet, and has invested in not one, but two unbuilt London apartments, the net result of which is that he has to stay in a hotel while in London. David and his wife now work part time at a summer soccer camp in California and she runs 'Potato Republic', a store specializing in itchy Irish clothing. Additionally, David and Nigel visit their boyhood home of Squatney, and reminisce. All of these bits are inspired as are the guest spots featuring things like Mel Torme singing "Big Bottom" and a member of Primus with a picture of Derek tattooed on his bicep.
My only irritant with this DVD is that some of the songs are incorrectly named in the liner notes for some reason; for instance, "Big Bottom" is called "Bum Cakes" in the credits. All in all, I think this is a wonderful DVD, and is well worth the money. If you are a true Tap fan, you must own this! The Return of Spinal Tap (1992) Overview

Black Metal: The Norwegian Legacy (2008) ReviewFirst off, not all of the bands are Norwegian or even black metal. It started out with some useful information, but then then there were just some dragged out clips of live shows. The guy who made this also makes some of the worst "horror" movies I've ever seen, and not in the good way.Black Metal: The Norwegian Legacy (2008) Overview

Grindcore: 85 Minutes of Brutal Heavy Metal ReviewGrindcore: 85 Minutes of Brutal Heavy Metal (director unknown, date unknown [early 90s?], DVD release 2003)
I've been having an argument on and off with an associate of mine for over a decade as to whether Godflesh were a grindcore band or not. Well, I finally have the proof I need, in the form of an old Hard 'n Heavy video magazine that found its way to a DVD release in 2003. While it focuses on bands that were more "classic" grindcore (Napalm Death and the like), there's Justin Broadrick belting out "Christbait Rising".
As has been said before, if you're looking for an introduction to or a history of the genre, this is not the release for you; this was made for existing fans of the genre during (or just before) its heyday. Preaching to the choir, as it were, and as a result it probably has more value now than it did back then on nostalgia alone. If you were there, you want to pick this one up. ***

Threshold - Critical Energy ReviewI purchased this DVD because I was already familiar with their music. I always enjoyed their progressive style of melodic metal somewhat related to Dream Theater.
But I was also aware that Threshold is still developing a fan base which admittedly is growing and the band is only now starting to get rocognition.
I expected a rather low budget release, not having the financial background to produce anything of lofty standards of the likes of Dream Theater, Rush or other well known acts of this genre. But I was very positively surprised. Picture quality and camera work is very good, but what really blew me away is the excellent sound. The mix is absolutely fantastic, each instrument clear to distinguish and the overall sound very powerful just as it should be for this type of music.
The band is in excellent form, the song selection almost perfect.
The only (minor) problem for me is the performance by the singer Mac. His singing itself is flawless with a great voice but I felt that his performance as a front man still leaves something to be desired. He simply seems to lack the matured qualities of a James LaBrie for example.
But apart from that I can only praise their effort in the making of this DVD and I highly recommend it to anyone who is into prog metal like DT or Pain of Salvation.Threshold - Critical Energy OverviewSix official studio releases, a live album, three fanclub releases, tours with Dream Theater, Psychotic Waltz, Enchant and Pain Of Salvation-Threshold have already made their mark on the international rock scene. After several line-up changes at the beginning of their career, the British band has been a stable formation since 1998, continuously working hard on the development of their unique sound.Their 2001 release, Hypothetical, was a document of great musical homogeneity and their new album, Critical Mass was another step forward as far as the compositions and the overall sound goes. Karl Groom and Nick Midson (both guitar), Steve Anderson (new bass player), Richard West (keyboards), Johanne James (drums) and Andrew McDermott (vocals) have toured with the new material in October 2002 and June 2003. On February 2nd Threshold will release there first ever Live-Double Album and Live-DVD. The Double CD featuring the 2 hour gig, which was recorded on the 6th of June in Holland. The DVD includes the complete concert, additional 24 minutes from ProgPower USA 2002, a 12 minute tour documentary, audio commentary from Karl Groom and Richard West and a stereo and 5.1 surround mix.

Paul Booth's Last Rites 1 (2009) Reviewthis was such a piece of crap wanna be art film documentary. I had been wanting to see this for years, finally bought it and what a disappointment! there's barely any tattooing in it, it's really just a bunch of shortly cut clips of paul with rockstars, paul getting his newer shop ready for business and crazy fans spliced together with incoherent nonsense and annoying sound effects. if you're looking to see some tattooing this is not the film for you. most of the scenes with tattooing can be seen on youtube anyway.Paul Booth's Last Rites 1 (2009) Overview

Pagan Metal: A Documentary (2009) Review
I was extremely excited when i was given this movie as a gift. I am a huge fan of folk metal, and was surprised to find such a dvd existed. The movie however, was as total letdown. The bands featured were subjected to the most assinine, offensive, and completely irreverent questions possible. Instead of using the interviews and live footage to show what an interesting and talented group of people the narrator got to meet, he seems to use the time to show what an uncultured idiot he is. This movie is a toss up, because there are no other documentaries on folk metal yet, Its cool that it exists, however its painful to watch. If you're interested in seeing talented musicians struggle to answer idiotic questions, this is the movie for you. The only up side is that now that world can see how classy and intelligent the members of the featured bands are in their responses. Seriously, the singer from Primordial has the patience of a saint.Pagan Metal: A Documentary (2009) Overview

Nocturno Culto: The Misanthrope (2007) ReviewThis is not what I expected. I enjoyed the film none-the-less. It offers a rare glimpse of life in Norway. It seems most people there live in modest cabin type homes that are comfortable but nothing extravagent. It shows Nocturno ice fishing, wandering around the frozen countryside, cross country skiing etc. A trip to Japan to Peter Beste's Black Metal photography exhibit... which interested me greatly. Some great music and some weird stuff all thrown together. Buy this if you are a fan!Nocturno Culto: The Misanthrope (2007) Overview

Superheroes ReviewContinuing in their effort of making first-class, worthwhile and must-buy singles and/or EP's, Edguy serves up Superheroes. Like 2004's King of Fools, Superheroes shows Edguy is far from finished, and have so much power in reserve that it's almost scary. What's even scarier is the title track isn't even the main attraction....
The title track "Superheroes" starts off the album, and while it's not the best Edguy song or single, it does its job well and energizes the listener ~ simply put, the track is just plain "fun". "Spooks in the Attic" is another playful, upbeat tune, with some of those goofy lyrics you'd expect from Edguy thrown in for good measure (Example: I'm a family kind of man, I've lately started number ten).
While the first two songs reveal Edguy's well-known silly side, there is nothing funny about the third track, "Blessing in Disguise". A slow, strong and serious song with a dynamite chorus, "Blessing in Disguise" has my vote for the best song on the EP. The song paints such a vivid narrative in my head it is downright frightening, and would make a killer video. Unfortunately, while I think the track is amazing, I just know it is doomed to become one of Edguy's most underrated songs ever (like "Frozen Candle" on Savage Poetry) because it is different that what one expects from Edguy.
Sammet and crew bounce back from the dark and dank with "Judas at the Opera". The harmony guitar solo that opens this song just screams Helloween Keepers-era, which is so appropriate considering Michael Kiske makes his appearance as a guest vocalist. Speaking of Kiske, I'm actually quite surprised he's even on this disc, considering his big "I'm no longer interested in the metal scene, I never fit into the metal community" statement he posted on the internet. Sammet must have flashed a big wad-o-cash to secure his participation, hehe.
Back to the song, Kiske and Sammet vocally battle back and fourth in this "mini-epic" that must be heard to believed. Honestly, when Sammet can throw in the word "french-fried" in the chorus and still make the song work, you know you got a winner. The album closes with "The Spirit" (which is surprisingly a Magnum cover), and the Epic Version of "Superheroes", which are good, but just seem like sprikles on an already richly iced cake.
Simply put, this is one of 2005 best euro metal releases despite the fact it's only a single/EP and appetizer to Edguy's new album Rocket Ride. In the end, for ten dollars, you're not gonna find a single/EP, let alone an album that gives you more bang for your buck.

Black Metal: The Music Of Satan (2010) ReviewOk, to start it's actually really good. I was skeptical at first because the way the DVD presents itself. Very low grade picture on the case, something you could pick off the internet and slap on there. The disc isn't helpful either, two fully clothed woman with beers. I didn't know what to expect. After you get through that you put the disc in of course.
The movie starts off with some weird intro and that's where I was worried, but honestly if you sit through that, the interviews start coming and they are surprisingly intriguing. Interviews with the guys from Tyr, Nergal from Behemoth, Abbath, Immortal, etc. they all have a point.
There's no narration in this DVD so the only one talking is the person being interviewed. It's strictly a Black Metal DVD IN THEIR OWN WORDS. That's really good actually ya know? A fan made DVD for fans.
It's roughly two hours long and kind of drags in some places, but I did enjoy it. A lot of humor is going on too so it's not all business ya know? I still prefer and recommend Until The Light Takes Us, but I suggest picking this one up it's good for a watch.
Why not 5 stars? Not a whole lot of big questions came up like Mayhem's history, reactions to certain times in BM history, stuff that Die-hard fans love to discuss. The book, Lords of Chaos wasn't brought up either, that would've been a good topic. The humor aspect does get a bit irritating at times, but like I said, I think it's still good. You'll just to have to see for yourself.
Special features include Band introductions which is just that, different bands introducing themselves
Fenriz of Darkthrone has an interview which is very entertaining.
Deleted scenes
& some 1 hour long film about god knows what. That's something you'll just have to watch. I guess it's all based on stuff the director was told he shouldn't do if he wanted to be a famous director, so he made a film in which that's all he did. Stuff like hitler and black face comedy, I don't know.
Well, enjoy.Black Metal: The Music Of Satan (2010) Overview

Underneath a Northern Sky (2009) ReviewBefore this dvd came out, it said that there was going to be a full live show, all of their videos and a ton of bonus footage spanning their whole 15 years as a band. While the bonus footage and interviews were well done, there are no videos in sight. The setlist was so short and the last song listed on the back of the case is not on the dvd. The All Night Lights was played for close to 5 seconds, then it cuts to the studio track and shows abunch of fans while it says the band member's names... just like in the beginning. Since this is my fav. 36 song, I was really looking forward to it. I dont understand why they would have paid to have it filmed and the sound taken off the soundboard and mastered, and not use it. It makes no sense. This product just seemed rushed and poorly put together.Underneath a Northern Sky (2009) Overview

Queen ReviewThe boys had officially decided to call themselves Queen (under the forceful persuasion of Freddie Mercury) by 1971, after finally choosing the bassist they wanted (John Deacon), and come 1972, they had completed and recorded most of the tracks to this album (though the album wouldn't initially be released until 1973.) Musically speaking, the unique characteristics of (70s) Queen (a/k/a "The Queen sound") that many came to know (e.g. the opera-rock, the outlandish whimsy, the strange juxtapositions of gender-bending/vaudeville/opera/metal) CAN be heard here, just in rawer, unpolished and underdeveloped terms. But other than that, the album is mostly a smorgasbord of classic heavy metal, psychedelia and progressive rock.
But, despite it being a work in progress (for Queen, anyway), the album is strong and solid on it's own. That's probably one of the most [standard] statements ever made, but for the first time, I'm tempted to apply it here. I really think if Queen were not to evolve or make another album after this, they still would have been recognized as having sophisticated musical talent - whether by critics (puh!) or by other musicians. Ironically, that's one of the few 'gifts' I noticed Queen to possess: not totally reaching their peak in a certain setting, yet what they come up with, seems to be strong in character and golden on it's own. "Keep Yourself Alive" was the 'somewhat' popular track on here, as Brian May in particular is playing some crunchy, yet sophisticated licks on his self-made guitar. I agree with some of the reviewers below who said that after listening to this (as well as the rest of the album), one gets a sense that Queen possessed a certain overwhelming, indescribable intensity and talent that was WAY ahead of it's time - and this was only their debut - an album that only gave hints of what would blossom on later efforts. Freddie Mercury (unsurprisingly) gave a wonderfully forceful vocal performance on here. "Doing All Right" was originally co-written by then vocalist Tim Staffel (Note: during that time, the band was called Smile, not Queen.) Anyway, the song progresses nicely from soft, wistful guitar passage-filled verses, which feature ethereal and angelic falsettos from Freddie Mercury, leading into the chorus' featuring summery vocal harmonies, which are then later followed by unexpected guitar blasts from Brian May.
Elsewhere, "Great King Rat" opens up with Brian May's trademark snaky guitar overdubs. The track features some pretty bold and daring lyrics (which were not uncommon with Queen) revolving around [explicit] metaphors, while "My Fairy King" gives subtle glimpses of the bizarreness that would be found in progressive rock tracks such as "The March Of The Black Queen," and later "Bohemian Rhapsody." Features some pretty bizarre, and arty lyrics, which feature many references to astrology and mythology, and delivered in Freddie Mercury's trademark seductive, gender-bending, Divaesque vocals.
"Liar" seems to get much praise by many of the reviewers here, and it's hard for me to disagree. A theatrical, almost operatic track, it manages to combine convincing, thought-provoking lyrics, intelligent dynamics and shifting in musical atmospherics, and Freddie Mercury in particular is raving it up on his vocals - shifting effortlessly from plaintive stylings, to genre-bending, oversexed moans, to forceful, passionate pleading and everything else, which I found highly impressive. There's also a section in the middle which features some exotic percussion, vocal chants and other atmospherics which seem utterly spiritual. Moving along to "Modern Times Rock N' Roll." This to me reminds me not of Led Zeppelin, but of some of the music that was labeled as proto-punk back in the 70s. In fact, to bring some attention to the former, I really don't think Queen has much in common with Led Zeppelin as many others seem to claim (I was particularly offended and infuriated by comments made by some of those half-witted critics for the Rolling Stone regarding Queen.) The many years I've been listening to Queen, I was never once reminded of Zeppelin. I would encourage many other reviewers not to buy too much into those comparisons, as to compare one band to the other is like comparing apples and oranges. "Son & Daughter" has a sinister glam-metal feel to it, especially in the slow, seductive heavy blasts from Brian's guitar, fronted by Freddie's venomous vocals. "Jesus" is the religious-infused closer to the album, which features some clomping chords from Brian (mostly minor chords), while Freddie gives a passionate vocal performance full of conviction. The track also sounds like it could have come from a Broadway musical. "Seven Seas Of Rhye" is a short, instrumental and somewhat alternate version of the full track found on the following album _Queen II_. The bonus cut called "Mad The Swine" is a keeper. I'm surprised this didn't make the original cut. A percussion-heavy track which also features some religious lyrics.
An excellent, prestigious and often overlooked debut. It's probably not best recommended for the uninitiated Queen fan to start out with, but for the Queen fan who owns a few of their albums (especially their more essential ones), and has interest in experiencing the roots of the band. Conversely, it's also recommended for the listener who appreciates quality rock music, added with some bizarre and sophisticated elements.Queen Overview

Seediq Bale ReviewI'm actually not a kid; I'm 16. Anyway, I downloaded this album off the iTunes music store, and it has to be one of the best things I've ever heard. This band became one of my top 5 bands within the first day of owning this album! They hail from Taiwan, and have even been banned in China for their support of Taiwanese independence, although their lyrics are politically neutral. This band is very unique, for several reasons. Musically, they are somewhat like Dimmu Borgir, but something sets them apart that I cant quite put my finger on. It may be the addition of female vocals, or the use of the Er-Hu, which is basically the Asian equivalent of a violin. The tempos are pretty varied, ranging from mid-paced beats (Indigenous Laceration, Progeny of Rmdax Tasing) to all out blast-beats (Quasi Putrefaction, Where the Utux Ancestors Wait). They also experiment with metalcore-ish riffing in 'Indigenous Laceration', but dont let that turn you off, because it is very effective.
Lyrically, instead of insipid 'hail satan' lyrics, they retell Taiwanese mythology, focusing on the Seediq tribe. Be sure to catch this band on the second stage at Ozzfest this year. I'm pretty sure a lot of my friends will get to see this band, but at least I can say that I was listening to them first.
Standout Tracks: Progeny of Rmdax Tasing, Enthrone, The Gods Weep, Banished Into Death, Quasi Putrefaction
Those are my favorites, although there is absolutely NO filler on this album. BUY IT.Seediq Bale Overview

Cannibal Corpse: Centuries of Torment (2008) ReviewLike the title of the review says, Centuries Of Torment isn't meant to be Live Cannibalism 2. So if that's what you're expecting, you're likely to be disappointed. It's more like what 15 Year Killing Spree was, but more of a visual history of the band. Disc 1 is a 3 hour documentary on 20 years of the band, from the early days to today. All of the members, old and current are featured (with the exception of guitarist Bob Rusay), including original vocalist Chris Barnes. 20 years seems like a lot to cram in, and 3 hours is a long time, but if you're patient, it's worth viewing. Disc 2 has live performances from 1989 to 2007. I've loved both eras of the band, but the more recent footage shown is better not because of the performance, but the audio quality. You're kinda reminded of Monolith Of Death when you're watching the older footage on here. While that dvd wasn't a total disaster, it wasn't worth buying. The more recent footage from 2005-2007 is where the quality improves. The Toronto 2006 show is probably my favorite one eventhough the sound is tinny at first, but it improves by the middle of the second song. Second favorite performance is Party.San 2005. If you didn't get enough from the first disc, Disc 3 shows extra footage where they talk about artist Vince Locke, the ban on their first three albums, fan tattoos, Metalocalypse, merch, lyrics, and more. I'm sure that there may be some stuff missing from the documentary, but then it'd probably end up being 4 hours long. Either way, if you're a fan, buy this now.Cannibal Corpse: Centuries of Torment (2008) Overview

Killswitch Engage: Set This World Ablaze (2005) ReviewAnd yes, I mean music and movie dvd's. This dvd is amazing. Being a fan of Killswitch Engage ever since their debut came out on Ferret, I HAD to buy this. A huge documentary, I think it's something along the lines of an hour and a half, tells the story of how the band formed from many different bands, to Jesse leaving, to right now. It includes all the music videos, which is great. The bonus features are great, and often humorous, especially when their roadie gets naked and crawls into bed with Jordan, the drummer of AILD, who is passed out asleep. And the greatest thing about this dvd, is the amazing live show they play. They sound fantastic live. The show is about 75 mins and never lets you down.
I'm sure some of you have read what I just wrote about how well they sound live and are saying to yourself "Oh they over dubbed the concert, blah blah blah". I have seen plenty of live Killswitch Engage videos that weren't "overdubbed" and they sounded fantastic. My friend has also seen them a few times and has told me how amazing they are live.
For all of you complaining about the "overdubbing" and how lame it is, did you even buy the dvd? If you did, and you can actually read, you will realize that it says "Live DVD Audio Mixed By Adam Dutkiewicz at Zing Studios" and "Audio Mastered By Drew Layne at All Digital. NYC Oct. 3, 2005." So of course the big show they have on here is going to sound well. Anything is going to sound great if Adam is in charge of the sound. (You hear about this in the dvd.) And I bet that almost all of the music dvd's you complainers buy has a live show that is "overdubbed" or mixed and mastered.
All in all, I love everything about Killswitch and their dvd. They are one of the few bands that you never have to skip a track when you are listening to any of their cds. I highly recommend this to any Killswitch fan. It is a must have and is definitely worth the money.Killswitch Engage: Set This World Ablaze (2005) OverviewItem Name: Killswitch Engage: Set This World Ablaze; Studio:Roadrunner Records

Lamb of God: Walk With Me in Hell (2008) ReviewKilladelphia was a perfect dvd to compliment Lamb Of God not only for their live performance, but the honest "warts n' all" portrayal of the band during the documentary footage (see infamous Glasgow fistfight for example). Here we are 3 years later after the release of Killadelphia, and we now have Walk With Me In Hell, a 2 hour documentary on the release of the much anticipated Sacrament and the tour that followed. While there's not so much fighting or drama here like Killadelphia, this dvd doesn't shy away from the realism. If 2 hours isn't enough for you, extras include live performances, plus the complete show from the 2007 Download festival, the making of Sacrament (the same documentary featured on the bonus dvd included in the special edition of Sacrament, perfect for anybody that doesn't have it), the official video for Redneck, and making of the video. While there are other killer band dvd's that are out (Unearth, God Forbid) and coming out (Cannibal Corpse, Nevermore) this year, this is simply one to get.Lamb of God: Walk With Me in Hell (2008) Overview

Kamelot: One Cold Winter's Night (2006) ReviewIf you like great rock music, camera work, picture/sound quality and the voice of Roy Khan in top form, you've come to the right place. What's not to love? Plus the second disc is loaded with features that really give you insight into the band and the making of the DVD itself. This is a must buy for any Kamelot fan, especially for those like me, who have never seen them live.Kamelot: One Cold Winter's Night (2006) OverviewOne Cold Winter's Night was recorded on February 11th, 2006 atthe historic Rockefeller Musichall in Oslo, Norway. Kamelot enlistedrenowned film and video director Patric Ullaeus to chronicle the night'sevents. Arriving with him from Gothenberg, Sweden, Patric had a large crewof professionals and equipment including 18 cameras that would be used inand around the concert grounds. The title for the band's first DVD (basedon an earlier Kamelot song title) was chosen long before the actual shoot.Ironically this winter turned out to be one of the longest and coldest inthe country's history, with enormous amounts of snow and numerouschaos-causing blizzards. A very special thanks goes out to fans that had towait in line before doors opened to the sold out show. We sincerely hope wemanaged to warm you back up!

The Arsenal of Megadeth ReviewDave Mustaine unleashes his band's arsenal but doesn't empty the barrels on this 2 disc set. The DVD is basically the Chronology of Megadeth, through various TV clips as well as music videos and commercial spots. It's a very interesting DVD because even though it clocks in at close to 3 hours for both discs total, it doesn't at all seem like you spent 3 hours watching it. The presentation is A plus, even though a few videos weren't included. One thing I would've liked was if Mustaine actually explained the departure and addition of members, not to sling mud, but maybe to shed light on why he chose who he chose, as he does have a history of picking un-metal players and making total metal shredders out of them. Bonus features are, well their really are none. Also thereis this constant gapping or "Bleeping", as it seems Mustaine has chosen to edit his language based on his new beliefs. The mix of music videos and Live footage is great, a lot of videos that went by I had no idea they made. I was really happy with this release, I'm definetly not the biggest Megadeth fan in the world, but this DVD was a great reminder to me and you as well of how great this band really is. I'm giving this a 4.The Arsenal of Megadeth Overview
