Surfing Beach Party (1988) ReviewThis is Not really Jan and Dean. There are clips of Dean and later Jan introducing videos. They are videos of people who are NOT Jan or Dean lip-syncing Jan and Dean songs but the songs are not the originals and do not even sound like they are done by Jan and Dean. There is no explanation of what you are seeing or why.

Radiohead: OK Computer - A Classic Album Under Review (2006) ReviewFirst things first, this DVD "reviews" the Ok Computer album. It shows very little clips of the band actually playing but it is quickly interrupted by someone talking. This dvd just has a collection of people talking about each song and how the album was great. They talk about the notes and what songs inspired Radiohead to come up with some of their songs. It's more of an educational DVD, I guess, on Radiohead's music and not really an entertainment video. If you want to see dvds of the band, look up "Meeting new people is easy" or "The Most Gigantic Lying Mouth Of All Time" on youtube and you will have a free show on the band. This DVD can get pretty boring if you don't have a care for how Radiohead came up with their music, the people that talk here can sometimes sound monotone.Radiohead: OK Computer - A Classic Album Under Review (2006) Overview

Paul Booth's Last Rites 1 (2009) Reviewthis was such a piece of crap wanna be art film documentary. I had been wanting to see this for years, finally bought it and what a disappointment! there's barely any tattooing in it, it's really just a bunch of shortly cut clips of paul with rockstars, paul getting his newer shop ready for business and crazy fans spliced together with incoherent nonsense and annoying sound effects. if you're looking to see some tattooing this is not the film for you. most of the scenes with tattooing can be seen on youtube anyway.Paul Booth's Last Rites 1 (2009) Overview

The Pixies - Sell Out (2005) ReviewIt was the tour that no one thought would ever happen. In 1992, the Pixies were on top of the world. While they hadn't quite broken through into the mainstream in the United States, they were a huge hit in England, almost reaching stadium status. They played some of the largest European rock `n' roll festivals and even opened for U2. And then their lead singer Black Francis announced that the band had broken up.
Black Francis and Kim Deal seemed as if they would never bury the hatchet and fans would never see their beloved band together again. And then it was announced last year that the Pixies were indeed going to be re-forming for a tour in select cities in Europe and the U.S. Anticipation was high and, if you were lucky enough to see them live, reportedly they did not disappoint. Now, you can get an idea of what it was like with this new DVD that gives you a sample of the band live in concert.
Black Francis' voice sounds as ferocious as it ever did. He gives it a good workout on "Something Against You" and "U-Mass," the latter a giddy, psychotic ode to the University of Massachusetts. Later on, he tears it up on "Tame," alternating between almost-whispered verses and deranged howling choruses. Joey is still the unsung, low-key guitar god he always was, delivering the insanely catchy riffs that the Pixies were revered for.
They pull out such memorable hits like "Monkey Gone to Heaven" and "Here Comes Your Man" along with underrated gems like the surreal "Subbacultcha." The only minor, personal caveat I have with the DVD is the short shrift given to the criminally underrated and much maligned Bossanova album. Only a dreamy, surf-soaked rendition of "Velouria" is played in their set. Also, their misunderstood swan song, Trompe Le Monde is also largely ignored in favour of older material.
There is a selection of 14 songs performed on the 2004 tour all over the world with optional interview segments from two of their long-time tour crew members. One of my personal favourites, "Planet of Sound" gets a fine workout in New Orleans while the Bossanova album is shown more love with a nice rendition of "Is She Weird" in Lowell, MA.
Finally, there is "MX Monkey's Choice" which allows you to switch from six different angles with your DVD remote while watching a live version of "Monkey Gone to Heaven."The Pixies - Sell Out (2005) OverviewIn 1992 the Pixies disbanded after releasing four acclaimed albums and one mini-album in a five-year period. The Pixies are widely regarded as one of the most important rock bands of the past 20 years-and influenced a new wave of alternative bands with their Quiet/Loud/Quiet song structure. Paraphrasing Kurt Cobain: "Nirvana would not have existed without the Pixies." Since the band split up, the leader, Black Francis, started a solo career as Frank Black, and Kim Deal, the bassist and vocalist, went on to form The Breeders. The band reunited in 2004 for a trimphant worldwide tour that saw the band playing better than ever, injecting the classic songs with renewed energy and universal critical response. The band's legacy and reputation has only grown stronger in the 12 years since they broke up, see her as the play in front of enthusiastic audiences, far larger than they had drawn in their heyday. Track Listings: Bone Machine, Wave of Mutilation (UK Surf), In Heaven, Something Against You, River Euphrates, U-Mass, Bone Machine, Cactus, Ed Is Dead, I Bleed, Monkey Gone To Heaven, Hey, Levitate Me, Subbacultcha, Dead, Gouge Away, Velouria, Mr. Grieves, Crackity Jones, Broken Face, Isla De Encanta, Tame, Here Comes Your Man, Holiday, Song, Where Is My Mind?, Vamos, Wave of Mutilation, Gigantic.

Crank ReviewLoved the movie, loved the soundtrack even more. Hearing the songs i remember from the 80's put into a hard core movie like this was such a trip. Takes me back to the good old days. :)
The big bonus on the cd is actual clips from the movie before certain songs. Though the sticker on the cd told you about the snippets from the movie it still was so unexpected.
great job to the producers and everyone who put this great soundtrack together!Crank Overview

Ac/Dc - No Bull Live Plaza De Toros - The Director's Cut - IMPORT (1996) ReviewThe Good
No Bull was originally released in 1996 for the home video market. The director David Mallet always thought that the release was too rushed, and ultimately was not the best result possible for the release. In 2008 the film has been completely restored in HD and the audio remixed in both stereo and 5.1 surround sound.
No Bull showcases AC/DC on their Ballbreaker tour. The venue for the event is the Plaza De Toros De Las Ventas bullfighting arena in Madrid, Spain. Now that title makes sense, huh? One of the greater aspects of this performance is that AC/DC knows how to put on a show. A show is much more than music. Although it has been virtually abandoned by current artists, a lot of AC/DC's show is visual as well as auditory. That makes for one hell of a performance.
The group kicks things off surprisingly with "Back in Black." Before they hit the stage, there's a hugh wrecking ball that destroys an old building that consumes the stage. After the top level is demolished, the group enters from what's left of the building. From their the group fires off some of their biggest and fan favorite tracks.
Songs include, "Thunderstruck," "Girls Got Rhythm," "Hard As A Rock," "Shoot to Thrill," "Hells Bells," "The Jack," "Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution," "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap," "You Shook Me All Night Long," "Whole Lotta Rosie," "T.N.T," "Highway to Hell," "For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)," plus six more.
You might even find a few undiscovered tracks along the way, as "Hail Caesar" and "Boogie Man" have become two of my new favorites. The crowd is huge and into every track. The energy level starts high and never falters. Visual highlights include the ominous bell from "Hells Bells," a hugh inflatable "Rosie," and the wrecking ball summonsing Angus from the depths of hell on "Highway to Hell."
There are a handful of bonus features which are cool, but you could have really lived without them. The show eclipses anything offered as a bonus. Live performances of "Cover You in Oil" (another new favorite of mine) from Sweden and "Down Payment Blues from Florida are included as bonuses. As well as alternate camera footage from the Spain show, titled "Angus-Cam."
The Bad
Let's face it, "Ballbreaker" wasn't exactly one of AC/DC's best efforts.
The Verdict
Has there ever been a bad AC/DC performance? I think not! No Bull is a perfect representation of what the group has to offer.Ac/Dc - No Bull Live Plaza De Toros - The Director's Cut - IMPORT (1996) Overview

Rage Against the Machine - Revolution In The Head And The Art Of Protest (2010) ReviewRage Against the Machine was/is a special, unique group. One that was able to go through society's filter, and make money and fame selling non-commercial, intelligent, and provocative music. They certainly left a mark in the industry and in our souls and their rise and fall has successfully been documented in the exciting and powerful "Revolution in the Head: Rage Against the Machine and the Art of Protest."
The film begins with scenes from the 1999 World Trade Organization Meeting, in Seattle, Washington. About 40,000 anti-globalization protestors made their presence felt at this event, and the music of Rage Against the Machine (RAM), in part, fueled their actions. It was clear at that time that this band, which combined hip-hop and hard rock, had made an impact on society.
The movie tells the story of how RAM came together. The original members are Zack De La Rocha (singer), Tom Morello (guitar), Tim Commerford (bass), and Brad Wilk (drums), of which De La Rocha and Morello are the most known. An assortment of journalists, producers, writers, and industry personnel are interviewed, and provide much information about the band. Some of these interviewees are Gustavo Arellano, Joe Levy, Colin Devenish, TV Reed, Michael Goldstone, Ann Powers, and Jerry Silverman. We learn a little bit about the band member's backgrounds, which explain, in some degree, the nature of their music, and how the band made their first record, and established itself as a radical protest group. Each of the three albums that they recorded - Rage Agaisnt the Machine (1993), Evil Empire (1996) and The Battle of Los Angeles (1999) - is discussed in detail, giving additional information about which ones were the hits. Furthermore, video clips of some of these hits are also shown, including their collaboration with filmmaker Michael Moore. Of course, details about their eventual break-up and reunions are also discussed, as well as the progress of some of its members as soloists after the separation.
Important, too, is the part of the documentary in which the history of protest music in the United States is described, beginning with the labor movement in the early 20th century with singer Joe Hill. Also discussed in some detail are Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Buffalo Springfield, The Clash, Bob Marley, Bruce Springsteen and others. Of particular importance in the development of RAM was the seminal rap group Public Enemy. The involvement of some of these artists in social causes is also mentioned.
"Revolution in the Head: Rage Against the Machine and the Art of Protest" is a formidable and necessary document of our times. It speaks about the people that have tried to make a difference through their music in, what I'm sorry to say, a very selfish and corporate world. May they live forever. The DVD includes biographies of some of the contributors and more. (USA, 2009, color and B&W, 106 min plus additional materials) Reviewed February 1, 2010 exclusively by Eric Gonzalez for [...].Rage Against the Machine - Revolution In The Head And The Art Of Protest (2010) Overview

The Byrds: Under Review ReviewI have just spent an entire afternoon viewing this. If you are in any way interested in the The Byrds then you will find this attractive little package to be truly enthralling. If you are a Beatles fan as well and you enjoyed the 'Anthology' DVDs then this certainly will not disappoint. It begins with a highly intelligent analysis of the ferment that mid 60s America experienced. From then on all the Byrds albums (except the reunion one from 1973 on Asylum)are examined in some depth. Throughout all this, the highly knowledgable experts consider just what it was that made this wonderful band so special. A most welcome quality is the way it gives roughly equal time to each phase in the group's history - and so the second disk is devoted almost entirely to the post 1967 period. To this end there are lengthy and extremely thoughtful insights from latterday Byrds, John York and Gene Parsons. To top it all the extremely versatile Mr York has written and performed on 12 string guitar, a most engaging little score that initially has you wondering which early Byrds album it comes from. Up to now the best biography has been Johnny Rogan's 'Timeless Flight Revisited'. This latest release would serve as a superb companion piece to that. I've been a Byrds'devotee ever since first hearing them on Radio Caroline in the summer of '65 .... but I learnt a great deal from this. The Byrds: Under Review Overview

Who The Hell Is Pete Doherty (2005) ReviewThe second half of this DVD, and maybe especially the extended interview in the "extras", does show why Doherty enthralls fans and captivates the media. His talent and charm and intelligence are prodigious, and they shine through even in this second-rate piece of hagiography. But the first half is almost chilling, as Doherty's friends and bandmates come across as the "vampires" of lyrics by Carl Barat, Doherty's former partner in the Libertines. Barat once described Babyshambles as Doherty's "denial band" because it denies that Doherty's crack and heroin use are problems. That really comes through here. The narrator even describes Doherty kicking in Barat's door and stealing from him to sell his treasures as "borrowing", with the things later "showing up" (or some similar term) in a pawnshop. It's disturbing to see Doherty's friends try to insulate him to a destructive degree, and it's to Doherty's credit that they don't seem to fully succeed. But it's painful to hear Doherty's take on Barat's putting the Libertines on ice. It's even sadder to hear what that situation did to him--this is not just some junkie rock star, as toss-off tabloid articles assert, this is a genius songwriter, and anyone who's heard, say, F*** Forever, has to be grateful that he pulled himself out of that and continued writing. But it's tough watching him ramble and bristle while obviously too high to be lucid, much less creative. (As he put it, if he's holding a crack pipe, he's not holding a guitar.) This is not a good documentary by any measure, but in spite of itself, it is a fascinating look at a fascinating talent.Who The Hell Is Pete Doherty (2005) Overview

Show & Tell (2010) ReviewThis DVD is a must have for any fan of The Birthday Massacre, regardless of if you've seen them live already or not. The video quality is pretty decent, and their performance is always so beautiful, energetic and artistic. Chibi (the lead singer) is always so adorable with her behavior on stage, this DVD really brings out the personality in every band member. I even found myself clapping along when Chibi would do it as if I were actually participating in the audience. Chibi's was on top of her game the night this was filmed and her voice sounds wonderful.
What they don't tell you for some (stupid) reason is that this video is TWO CONCERTS! haha. They're selling it as one, just the live one in Germany, but in the bonus features section, the entire M'era Luna performance of 2005 is in there! I don't know why its just considered a bonus feature, I think they'd sell more if they actually told people. Maybe its supposed to be a surprise to the fans buying the DVD and i'm currently spoiling their fun (Sorry if I am, TBM). The M'era Luna performance is really cool too because its in the daytime outside, so on an HDTV it looks WAY cooler than the Germany night time main performance this DVD has. There is also a little bonus feature of an interview with TBM on the DVD, and they actually said "we didn't even know this was going to be a DVD, we were surprised" which means this concert is raw, real TBM. They didn't go on stage that night with the intent to show off for the DVD, which makes it even more special. It shows that this is how all TBM shows are. High energy, beautifully artistic, and wonderfully executed.
I'd also like to add that the people who filmed and edited the DVD did a great job. It's not just a still shot of their concert. Sometimes the camera will kind of go into "slow motion" and turn certain ways with different camera effects, it makes it really fun to watch. It gives the concert even more depth and makes it very unique. Some shots you'll feel like you're literally on stage with them probably tripping over all their cords (hoping you wont break anything since they have so much electronic equipment and stuff on their stage haha), then all of a sudden you'll be in the back of the audience seeing a view of all of the action.
Seriously, even if you don't have any idea who The Birthday Massacre are, just still buy it. Take yourself on a wonderful audio/video journey just because its an experience you'll never forget.Show & Tell (2010) Overview

Lamb of God: Walk With Me in Hell (2008) ReviewKilladelphia was a perfect dvd to compliment Lamb Of God not only for their live performance, but the honest "warts n' all" portrayal of the band during the documentary footage (see infamous Glasgow fistfight for example). Here we are 3 years later after the release of Killadelphia, and we now have Walk With Me In Hell, a 2 hour documentary on the release of the much anticipated Sacrament and the tour that followed. While there's not so much fighting or drama here like Killadelphia, this dvd doesn't shy away from the realism. If 2 hours isn't enough for you, extras include live performances, plus the complete show from the 2007 Download festival, the making of Sacrament (the same documentary featured on the bonus dvd included in the special edition of Sacrament, perfect for anybody that doesn't have it), the official video for Redneck, and making of the video. While there are other killer band dvd's that are out (Unearth, God Forbid) and coming out (Cannibal Corpse, Nevermore) this year, this is simply one to get.Lamb of God: Walk With Me in Hell (2008) Overview

Santana: Hymns For Peace - Live at Montreux 2004 (2007) ReviewI saw Shorter/Santana on this tour, still have the T-shirt to prove it. It was an awe-inspiring moment in music history. Santana had been doing his brand of jazz-rock fusion since the '70's, but had taken a detour into the pop world. Santana's "Lotus" and "Caravanserai" are masterpieces, not to mention Carlos' work with Alice Coltrane. The reviewer has quite obviously not done his homework, as Leon "Ndugu" Chancler worked with Santana in 1974-1976, *before* joining Weather Report (Chancler was in Weather Report in 1975). Santana has been friends with Wayne Shorter for many years, recorded "The Swing of Delight" with Shorter in 1980, which may have been a bit ambitious and fell fairly short of their potential.
However, any professional music reviewer that truly believes that drummer Chester Thompson switched to keyboards for this tour is a bumbling idiot. Chester Thompson, the keyboard player, has been playing with Santana since 1983, as well as being a *major* name in Hammond organ players, having been the main keyboard player for the Tower Of Power for 10 years.
Chester Thompson, the drummer, played with Weather Report for one year, in 1976, but was the long-time touring drummer with Genesis. He's a great drummer, but he'll never be a keyboard player at the level of his namesake in the Santana band.
This tour was an amazing feat, and while Shorter has a much richer history in the jazz-rock world than Santana, their playing seemed to be the perfect complement to each other. I eagerly await the next time Carlos decides to take such a risk and leave the comfortable pop world to explore jazz textures with Shorter.
Santana also performed a kickin' version of Miles Davis' "In A Silent Way/It's About That Time", of which the former was written by future Weather Report keyboardist/leader Joe Zawinul. The Weather Report/Shorter connection goes much further back and is much stronger than our friend Sam would have us believe.Santana: Hymns For Peace - Live at Montreux 2004 (2007) OverviewOn July 15, 2004, Santana took to the stage in Montreuxaccompanied by a stunning line-up of guests to perform a concert of songsabout peace and understanding that they dubbed "Hymns For Peace". Nine Hundred Nights - Big Brother and the Holding Co. with Janis Joplin ReviewTold mostly by the members of Big Brother, you get to see Big Brother from the early days thru the Janis period. This film doesn't focus exclusively on Janis Joplin, it looks at the band and the effect that Janis Joplin had on the band.
Big Brother took a lot of flack for "holding Janis back" from some music critics, but, in truth, Janis was so incendiary on stage that any band would have taken a back seat to her, and looked mediocre in comparison. By itself this film is too tightly focused on commentary, the musical performances are mostly clips lasting a minute or so. However there is a separate menu selection that presents four full length songs performed live, all featuring Janis. This provides a good glimpse of the band, and Janis, and the energy they generated.
The main strength of this DVD is the opportunity to get to see members of Big Brother, as well as other contemporaries on the San Fransisco scene, reflect both on the band and the times. There was so much energy then, and it seems so far away now.Nine Hundred Nights - Big Brother and the Holding Co. with Janis Joplin OverviewExperience the mind-bending sound and soulfoul voice that turned on a generation of rebellious youth. Witness the formation-and disintegration- of one of the most misunderstood and under-appreciated bands of the era, the band that launched Janis Joplin: Big Brother and the Holding Company. Hear the untold story in Big Brother's own words.Includes D.A. Pennebaker's rarely-seen live Generation Club footage of "Piece Of My Heart," and "Comin' Home," their breakout performance of "Ball And Chain" and the unreleased "Combination Of The Two" from Monterey Pop; Cheap Thrills recording session of "Summertime," rehearsal and studio performances of "Down On Me,""Blow My Mind,""hall of The Mountain King" and "Light Is Faster Than Sound."

White Lunar ReviewHow does one accurately describe the music that Nick Cave & Warren Ellis create? It's not hard, but it's not easy either. Some might say it's music for night, but that doesn't quite do it; it's not just any night that this music belongs to.
This music belongs to that dwindling campfire that you've tried so hard to keep going so the wolves won't carry you away while you're sleeping. This music stirs within the last few sips of bourbon in that old glass while the moon gets stuck at that halfway point between midnight & dusk. This music is in that car door slam of an estranged lover who you really shouldn't let drive on the highway at this particular time of night. This music's for the dusty grave robber who can't sleep for that is the cost of his fortunes.
Is this an essential collection? If you're a Nick Cave fan it is. If you're a Dirty Three fan it is. If you've purchased the other soundtracks by Cave & Ellis it is. If you're just passing through & you're looking for the typical instrumental albums that you can space out to; well, I'd keep on walking, stranger. More than music you can space out to, this is stuff you can lose yourself in. Try & not let the opening chimes of "Song For Jesse" conjure up icy fields & slow moving clouds. Try not to find yourself at the banks of river watching your mistress play in the water while "Sorya Market" plays.
If you see the name Nick Cave & Gothic lyrics, keep that head down & pass by. Only 3 songs here feature any vocals. Instead, Cave & Ellis let the music narrate & carry. It's a successful collection & I can't think of any other composers that can truly draw more from less.White Lunar Overview

The Complete Master Works 2 (2008) ReviewI should say...I'm a 50 plus year old...who loves the Sound of Music and Singin in The Rain.....this is NOT your dad's or grandads musical comedy...Jack Black drops F bombs as often as he plays the simple cowboy C chord on his Gibson acoustic but it is FUN!!
This 2 DVD set contains a fully produced concert which is loaded with fun songs..excellent musicianship and an actual story line! It is a first rate production. The second disc has a hilarious documentary (and if you purchase at BEST BUY an additional 30 minutes of out takes)...there are also some cool appearances on SNL, Conan etc..
Its a very worthwhile bit of fun and music....which I'm having a pretty hard time describing because I can't think of anybody crazy enough to have done anything like it. They are mistakenly linked to Spinal Tap but other than a rock and comedy element I don't see it....Tap was a parody all the way and this ....well it stands on its own. It isn't even garage band stuff for the most part...its more like the kind of music a couple of 16 year olds would do in their bedrooms and perhaps that has a certain appeal to me as a kid who played guitar with his buddy and wrote equally horrible songs in High School. Several hours of fun for not a lot of scratch..
I'm happy to give the D 5 stars!
