The Return of Spinal Tap (1992) ReviewWhile nothing, absolutely nothing, can compete with the original "This is Spinal Tap" for comedic genius, this DVD is a brilliant work in it's own right. While it is true that the majority (maybe 75 percent or so) of the film is a live show shot in the Royal Albert Hall in 1992, there are numerous interludes and links to keep the satire quotient pegged.
All in all the music is performed well, but some of the newer materiel falls a bit flat compared to the "Smell the Glove" set. Songs like "Cash on Delivery" and "Clam Caravan", while vaguely amusing are not up to the normal Tap standards (although Nigel playing the clarinet is quite a sight), and the Rap version of "Sex Farm" was just plain annoying. Having said that, there are moments of inspired brilliance here. During "Stonehenge" they have the opposite problem they had in the original...the monument is too huge to get in the theatre. During "Big Bottom" all three play basses, which is not only funny to think about, but very funny to actually hear. The guitar pyrotechnics and way over the top soloing of Nigel Tufnel continue in "Diva Fever", a forgettable song without the solo. During this particular solo (during which Derek takes a cab and gets a huge meal at a restaurant, while David has a cucumber facial and pedicure) Nigel plays his guitars by throwing horseshoes at them, juggling while playing with his feet, etc.
Interspersed with the concert footage are numerous links, most of which are utterly brilliant. We learn that Nigel has invented a folding wine glass (he still needs the rubber hinges), and has founded 'Travel for Animals', an organization that allows animals (in this case his ferret, Trevor) to travel with their own passport. We learn that Derek goes on his father's telephone sanitizing service ('Sani Phone') business calls with him to help make ends meet, and has invested in not one, but two unbuilt London apartments, the net result of which is that he has to stay in a hotel while in London. David and his wife now work part time at a summer soccer camp in California and she runs 'Potato Republic', a store specializing in itchy Irish clothing. Additionally, David and Nigel visit their boyhood home of Squatney, and reminisce. All of these bits are inspired as are the guest spots featuring things like Mel Torme singing "Big Bottom" and a member of Primus with a picture of Derek tattooed on his bicep.
My only irritant with this DVD is that some of the songs are incorrectly named in the liner notes for some reason; for instance, "Big Bottom" is called "Bum Cakes" in the credits. All in all, I think this is a wonderful DVD, and is well worth the money. If you are a true Tap fan, you must own this! The Return of Spinal Tap (1992) Overview

Bjork: Inside Bjork (2003) ReviewSent to music school at the age of 5, and at the age of 11 released her first album. But, she felt funny about it, 'cause it wasn't her work. Then she got involved in punk. Shows GREAT video of Einar Orn in Purrkur Pillnikk and Bjork in Tappi Tikkarass, and shows her book Um Urnat! And clips from the Kukl video "Anna"! Then the Sugarcubes, one of the first people they talk to is Beck, who discusses hearing Birthday for the first time.. the video for "Birthday" is shown.
Then Bjork moves on to her solo career, looking for new challenges. She collaborates with Graham Massey, on songs she had written since childhood. It shows an adorable clip of her singing "The Anchor Song" accompanying herself on an old pedal organ, in a little church. With gorgeous sights of Iceland.
She explains the mood of each album: Debut is like a polite new-comer, and Post is like a wide eyed girl consumed by the city and the city is consuming her. She talks about the story of Isobel, called Isobel, because of the ISO-lation. Elton John says: "A lot of people who aren't that musical, say "oh it's a lot of rubbish, it's noise", but it's not, it's extremely clever. And it's far more sophisticated then most things that are out there, by a hundred thousand times." (Agreed!)
According to Bjork, Homogenic is about a person put in an impossible situation, with a lot of pressure. She'd work 16 hours a day, rarely with a day off. Homogenic is like a warrior, not one with weapons, but one with love. Homogenic was like a "blue period" for her. She discusses Joga, like a national anthem with patriotic strings. She collected actual volcanic beats, for the song.
RZA dicusses Norse mythology with surprising insight. About how Iceland is filled with such fascinating mythology, about the different deities. And how Bjork is kind of a "warrior princess" :-)
Bjork discusses that she thought she was at first an atheist, but then she matured and realized she did have a religion, nature. She discusses her love hate relationship with classical music.

Then onto Dancer in The Dark. Just seeing and hearing the clips made me choke up. That movie is so sad. She's not a trained actor, she worked by instinct. And Sean Penn point's out "If someones preserves their instinct from a young age, training becomes an inhibitor"
And of course, it discusses the swan dress, and Elton John expresses his wrath about the critisism it got, AGREED!
Bjork: "The girl in Dancer in the Dark, was very introverted and kind of heard of all these noises in her head, like a locked universe". And Vespertine is about an internal world, what happens under her skin. Shows the videos for Pagan Poetry Cocoon..and Bjork discusses Icelandic passion.
Then the film tells about how she has now left Europe and settled in New York, and shows her working on a computer with her microbeats. And she discusses Matmos. And Matmos talk about their interesting collaboration with her, and shows them on the Vespertine tour. Lastly shows her singing Generous Palmstroke.
She says when people were asking what kind of music she did, she said "some kind of modern folk music".:-)
Throughout when they talk to her, she's so sweet and funny. Often making jokes. She has a cute laugh..
I was kind of disappointed they didn't talk to Einar Orn, but oh well. Certainly can't complain!
I was absolutely bursting, It made me love her even more. She's my favorite artist and no one on earth can equal her, she's unparalleled. She's genuine, uncorrupted and uncliched. Great item for the curious or a necessity for the obsessed (like me). Good price too. Money well spent. Buy it!Bjork: Inside Bjork (2003) Overview

The Pixies - Sell Out (2005) ReviewIt was the tour that no one thought would ever happen. In 1992, the Pixies were on top of the world. While they hadn't quite broken through into the mainstream in the United States, they were a huge hit in England, almost reaching stadium status. They played some of the largest European rock `n' roll festivals and even opened for U2. And then their lead singer Black Francis announced that the band had broken up.
Black Francis and Kim Deal seemed as if they would never bury the hatchet and fans would never see their beloved band together again. And then it was announced last year that the Pixies were indeed going to be re-forming for a tour in select cities in Europe and the U.S. Anticipation was high and, if you were lucky enough to see them live, reportedly they did not disappoint. Now, you can get an idea of what it was like with this new DVD that gives you a sample of the band live in concert.
Black Francis' voice sounds as ferocious as it ever did. He gives it a good workout on "Something Against You" and "U-Mass," the latter a giddy, psychotic ode to the University of Massachusetts. Later on, he tears it up on "Tame," alternating between almost-whispered verses and deranged howling choruses. Joey is still the unsung, low-key guitar god he always was, delivering the insanely catchy riffs that the Pixies were revered for.
They pull out such memorable hits like "Monkey Gone to Heaven" and "Here Comes Your Man" along with underrated gems like the surreal "Subbacultcha." The only minor, personal caveat I have with the DVD is the short shrift given to the criminally underrated and much maligned Bossanova album. Only a dreamy, surf-soaked rendition of "Velouria" is played in their set. Also, their misunderstood swan song, Trompe Le Monde is also largely ignored in favour of older material.
There is a selection of 14 songs performed on the 2004 tour all over the world with optional interview segments from two of their long-time tour crew members. One of my personal favourites, "Planet of Sound" gets a fine workout in New Orleans while the Bossanova album is shown more love with a nice rendition of "Is She Weird" in Lowell, MA.
Finally, there is "MX Monkey's Choice" which allows you to switch from six different angles with your DVD remote while watching a live version of "Monkey Gone to Heaven."The Pixies - Sell Out (2005) OverviewIn 1992 the Pixies disbanded after releasing four acclaimed albums and one mini-album in a five-year period. The Pixies are widely regarded as one of the most important rock bands of the past 20 years-and influenced a new wave of alternative bands with their Quiet/Loud/Quiet song structure. Paraphrasing Kurt Cobain: "Nirvana would not have existed without the Pixies." Since the band split up, the leader, Black Francis, started a solo career as Frank Black, and Kim Deal, the bassist and vocalist, went on to form The Breeders. The band reunited in 2004 for a trimphant worldwide tour that saw the band playing better than ever, injecting the classic songs with renewed energy and universal critical response. The band's legacy and reputation has only grown stronger in the 12 years since they broke up, see her as the play in front of enthusiastic audiences, far larger than they had drawn in their heyday. Track Listings: Bone Machine, Wave of Mutilation (UK Surf), In Heaven, Something Against You, River Euphrates, U-Mass, Bone Machine, Cactus, Ed Is Dead, I Bleed, Monkey Gone To Heaven, Hey, Levitate Me, Subbacultcha, Dead, Gouge Away, Velouria, Mr. Grieves, Crackity Jones, Broken Face, Isla De Encanta, Tame, Here Comes Your Man, Holiday, Song, Where Is My Mind?, Vamos, Wave of Mutilation, Gigantic.

Pussy ReviewSo Rammstein is at it again and recently released two songs from their upcoming album. The first song, "Pussy," is pretty self explanatory. Gone are the clever lyrics Rammstein is known for, but they more than make up for it with good, rousing, typical, Rammstein metal. The music is pure Rammstein. Actually, upon first listen, it seems they recycled several old songs to create this song. I don't fault them for this, as the song still manages to stand on its own. It has a bit more of a pop beat, akin to Moscow or Amerika. Since I tend to appreciate the newer albums by Rammstein, I give this song 4 1/2 stars. For fans of the older Rammstein, they also include the B-rate single "Rammlied." This song has the brooding anger with menacing guitars that skyrocketed Rammstein to international fame with their first two albums. As I said earlier, I am not as big of a fan of their early work, so I rate this song 3 stars.
In conclusion, judging from this CD, Rammstein is back with much of their old thunder. I would be satisfied with another typical Rammstein CD, but I am hoping they manage to stretch their genre a little more than the samples we see on this single.
If not, ehh, it's still Rammstein.
PS: For those of you older than 18, you may want to check out the music video to "Pussy." You can do an online search to locate the unedited version, or watch the edited version on youtube. Be forewarned: This video contains nudity (hell, it's basically a porno). Not very clever like their music videos of the past, but what it lacks in vision, it more than makes up in controversy. Let's just say that this music video isn't going to see much air time on MTV.Pussy Overview

Fear of a Punk Planet, Vol. 1 ReviewWhen I saw that am@zon not only had no reviews for this video but no description as well, I knew I had to write this review. This Kung Fu records released movie is SLC Punk done right. Unlike SLC Punk this movie has a REAL Plot. It's also hilarious! Something that SLC Punk rarely was. Plus, after the movie it has exclusive live footage from NOFX, Sick of it All, Good Riddance, Ataris, and The Bounding Souls. This movie begins with NOFX playing live at a punk club called "The Baby Seal". This is a movie to say "... authority" to. Because you watch as the evil fire marshal abuses his power to close down the "menacing" punk club for so called "sanitary" reasons. Due to the claims the fire marshal put on, the club the club owner admits defeat. However, 4 punks: an Epitaph punk, crusty punk, Pop/Punker, and hardcore kid band together to save their scene. They re-open the Baby Seal as a non-profit organization so the city ordinances won't apply to it. You get to watch as the 4 punks conquer various obstacles on their way, argue about the meaning of punk rock, and create hilarious dialogue while doing it. Whether you like crusty, pop/punk or hardcore, this is a must have for any die hard punk rocker. You WILL be satisfied.Fear of a Punk Planet, Vol. 1 Overview

"Neil Norman - Greatest Science Fiction Hits, Vol. 1" ReviewThis is the first of Neil Norman's Greatest Science Fiction Hits. The album features re-recordings of famous science fiction themes, produced and arranged by Neil and the late great Les Baxter. The songs are done in a discofied synth pop style, which works pretty well in most of the cases here. I said that these are famous science fiction themes, but four of the tracks here were apparently written especially for this album by Baxter or Norman. I have been unable to find any information about a film called "Journey to the 7th Galaxy". There have been films called "Phantom Planet", "Not of This Earth" and "Black Hole", but the tracks here do not appear to be from those films. Regardless of all that, this is a fun album. Recommended to science fiction fans."Neil Norman - Greatest Science Fiction Hits, Vol. 1" Overview

Okuribito (Departures) ReviewLast month I had the pleasure of catching the Oscar winning film OKURIBITO (aka DEPARTURES) at my local Landmark theater). I completely fell in love with the film about a man who finds a new calling in the field of Nokanshi (or encoffineer) after his orchestra is dismissed due to poor finances. What really made this film so endearing to me is the gorgeous classical film score by Joe Hisaishi, the same composer who has worked on numerous Hiyao Miyazaki films. I was particularly moved by his song "Memory". The haunting melodies of the song had brought tears to my ears through out the film. It is rare that a film score could do that to me but Joe's beautiful composition did. The soundtrack is about 44 minutes long. I had to scour the internet to find a copy of the soundtrack at a decent price. I was fortunate that I did and I was not disappointed by what I heard. This soundtrack is definitely worth owning if you loved the movie as much as I do.Okuribito (Departures) Overview

Bring in the Noise, Bring in the Phunk (2006) ReviewBe VERY aware -
This DVD is a one-hour documentary that contains absolutely no singing - no songs - and no performances by the Black Eyed Peas (BEPs).
It simply discusses where the various members grew up, different musical influences they were exposed to, and a bit of history of Hip-Hop music prior to the BEPs making it big. During the narration a number of still shots of the band members are shown on the screen, but that's about it.
Once again - NO SONGS - NO MUSIC - NO PERFORMANCES by the BEPs - a huge waste of $$ in my mind.Bring in the Noise, Bring in the Phunk (2006) Overview

The Art of Piano - Great Pianists of 20th Century (1999) ReviewHaving owned the videotape of this program I was pleased to get the new DVD version. It has additions to the tape. For one thing, although conducted primarily in English, there are English subtitles for those bits that are conducted in languages other than English. And there are also Japanese, Spanish and French subtitles for those who wish them. Some of the film footage is simply magnificent and extremely rare. For instance, one sees the elderly Francis Plante playing brilliantly; born in 1839, he had actually heard Chopin play! There is some tendency to cut away from music footage in order to continue the voice-over narration, and that is understandable, but it is also occasionally frustrating. Some have complained that there are only two female pianists represented - a long and impressive bit with Dame Myra Hess, and an uncredited bit underneath the credits with Annie Fischer - but then there are plenty of other male pianists who could have been included, too. The makers of the film only had two hours with which to work, so one can understand the omissions. There is a minimum of fawning, a fair amount of substantive information - both plusses. For those of us who are fascinated by both piano technique and ever-changing pianistic styles this DVD is indispensable. It was wonderful to see lengthy bits featuring, among others, Benno Moiseiwitsch, Josef Hofmann, Claudio Arrau, Emil Gilels, Sviatoslav Richter, Arturo Benedetto Michelangeli, György Cziffra, Alfred Cortot, Arthur Rubinstein and to have interviews with current musicians like Sir Colin Davis, Stephen Kovacevich, Daniel Barenboim, Piotr Anderszewski, Tamás Vasáry, and Gary Graffman.
Recommended.

Fun With the Fab Four (2000) ReviewWhen my friend brought her copy of "Fun with the Fab Four" over to my house today, I thought it looked stupid. The name does make it sound as though it will be, but when she told me it was not, I agreed to watch it. Especially when I found out the Midsummer Nights Dream sketch was in it, something I had been dyeing to see ever since I first saw a picture of John in those pigtails. Anyway, as the other reviewers have said, if you'r not much of a beatles fan, stear clear. This is really only for those leaning toward obsessive. If you are like me, (I bought Ringo a sixty-fourth birthday present) this dvd is a wonder beyond your wildest dreams. The interviews are interesting and almost constantly hilareous, and the Midsummer Nights Dream sketch is worth it all on its own. That sketch is quite possibly the funniest thing I have ever seen. ("I'm the man on the moon, this is my thorn branch, and this doggie woggie here is my dog!" ...priceless) The part from Japanese television in which the picture didn't match the sound was confusing (Ringo's mouth is moving, but John's voice is coming out!), but apart from that, I think it is one of my favorite Beatles DVDs, and I own a good amount (anthology, unauthorized, A hard days night, help, magical mystery tour, and soon Let it Be, hopefully), all of which I hold in very high regard. I plan to buy Fun with the Fab Four as soon as possible, and at the price it has, there is no reason to pass it up! Its going for a penny in the used section! oh, and if anyone knows where to get George Harrison's pirate song sketch from Eric Idle's television program, Id be much obliged. thanks!Fun With the Fab Four (2000) Overview

Hellboy ReviewOne might expect the music for Hellboy to be loaded down with throbbing percussion and blaring brass, but the opposite is true. Marco Beltrami has written a sensitive score that has more to do with the characters and their relationships than battle scenes. The tracks Liz Sherman, Rooftop Tango Father's Funeral and Investigating Liz come immediately to mind as music having well developed themes that are even more rewarding when heard again. There, of course, are great dramatic moments when Hellboy battles the villains, but Mr. Beltrami does not go for a cheap effect and is nicely descriptive; the track entitled Soul Sucker has a nice spooky quality.
In short, this is a thoughtfully composed score that is charming, thrilling and atmospheric. It is a film score than can be listened to again and again for the quality of the music and a CD you will not get tired of.Hellboy Overview
