Bjork: Inside Bjork (2003) ReviewSent to music school at the age of 5, and at the age of 11 released her first album. But, she felt funny about it, 'cause it wasn't her work. Then she got involved in punk. Shows GREAT video of Einar Orn in Purrkur Pillnikk and Bjork in Tappi Tikkarass, and shows her book Um Urnat! And clips from the Kukl video "Anna"! Then the Sugarcubes, one of the first people they talk to is Beck, who discusses hearing Birthday for the first time.. the video for "Birthday" is shown.
Then Bjork moves on to her solo career, looking for new challenges. She collaborates with Graham Massey, on songs she had written since childhood. It shows an adorable clip of her singing "The Anchor Song" accompanying herself on an old pedal organ, in a little church. With gorgeous sights of Iceland.
She explains the mood of each album: Debut is like a polite new-comer, and Post is like a wide eyed girl consumed by the city and the city is consuming her. She talks about the story of Isobel, called Isobel, because of the ISO-lation. Elton John says: "A lot of people who aren't that musical, say "oh it's a lot of rubbish, it's noise", but it's not, it's extremely clever. And it's far more sophisticated then most things that are out there, by a hundred thousand times." (Agreed!)
According to Bjork, Homogenic is about a person put in an impossible situation, with a lot of pressure. She'd work 16 hours a day, rarely with a day off. Homogenic is like a warrior, not one with weapons, but one with love. Homogenic was like a "blue period" for her. She discusses Joga, like a national anthem with patriotic strings. She collected actual volcanic beats, for the song.
RZA dicusses Norse mythology with surprising insight. About how Iceland is filled with such fascinating mythology, about the different deities. And how Bjork is kind of a "warrior princess" :-)
Bjork discusses that she thought she was at first an atheist, but then she matured and realized she did have a religion, nature. She discusses her love hate relationship with classical music.

Then onto Dancer in The Dark. Just seeing and hearing the clips made me choke up. That movie is so sad. She's not a trained actor, she worked by instinct. And Sean Penn point's out "If someones preserves their instinct from a young age, training becomes an inhibitor"
And of course, it discusses the swan dress, and Elton John expresses his wrath about the critisism it got, AGREED!
Bjork: "The girl in Dancer in the Dark, was very introverted and kind of heard of all these noises in her head, like a locked universe". And Vespertine is about an internal world, what happens under her skin. Shows the videos for Pagan Poetry Cocoon..and Bjork discusses Icelandic passion.
Then the film tells about how she has now left Europe and settled in New York, and shows her working on a computer with her microbeats. And she discusses Matmos. And Matmos talk about their interesting collaboration with her, and shows them on the Vespertine tour. Lastly shows her singing Generous Palmstroke.
She says when people were asking what kind of music she did, she said "some kind of modern folk music".:-)
Throughout when they talk to her, she's so sweet and funny. Often making jokes. She has a cute laugh..
I was kind of disappointed they didn't talk to Einar Orn, but oh well. Certainly can't complain!
I was absolutely bursting, It made me love her even more. She's my favorite artist and no one on earth can equal her, she's unparalleled. She's genuine, uncorrupted and uncliched. Great item for the curious or a necessity for the obsessed (like me). Good price too. Money well spent. Buy it!Bjork: Inside Bjork (2003) Overview

Detroit Mob Confidential (2009) ReviewDefinately worth your while. Fascinating history of Detroit's underworld history. Alot to absorb in one video.Detroit Mob Confidential (2009) OverviewDetroit Mob Confidential explores the history of Detroit's La Cosa Nostra Family, which, in many ways, is the most successful crime family in the United States. Detroit's family has had only 2 Dons, the current boss has served for 30 years and is the longest serving mob Don in America. The documentary consists of interviews with multiple FBI agents and Federal prosecutors as well as several mafia associates from the 1950's and 1960's. Topics such as the Detroit "Combination's" (as the Family is known) infiltration of Las Vegas casinos and their centrality to the dissapearance of Jimmy Hoffa are discussed. The Detroit Family was the first LCN chapter that had members convicted of corruption involving Las Vegas casinos, and has been the target of the FBI's still ongoing Jimmy Hoffa investigation since 1975. The formation of the family during the prohibition era, culminating in the "Crosstown Mob War" of 1930 is covered, as well Detroit Mafia connections to the battles between Ford Motor Company and the UAW in the 1930's and 40's. The Detroit Family's role in the international heroin trade and their ties to the French Connection are discussed as well as various murders the Federal government suspects them of involvment in.Detroit area underworld legends like Tony "Jack" Giacalone and his brother Vito (Billy Jack), Freddy "the Pope" Salem and "the General" Henry Hilf are covered, as well as the Denny Mclain, Alex Karras, and Isiah Thomas gambling investigations. The Mafia's role in controlling the African-American "numbers rackets" is exposed as well as the internal politics and conflicts of the family. In addition to law enforcement and media sources, former associates reflect on the past and their work with Detroit Mafia members in sports gambling and other criminal activities.Several hundred unique and never-seen-before surveillance photographs from Federal law enforcement are used as well as family photos of Don Joe Zerilli on his Grosse Pointe estate."Detroit Mob Confidential" is the first and only documentary made about America's most secretive, and most succesful Mafia family. Beginning in 1912 and finishing in 2009, "Detroit Mob Confidential" is a must-see DVD for any student of American History, crime buffs, and Detroiters of all ages and backgrounds.

Pagan Metal: A Documentary (2009) Review
I was extremely excited when i was given this movie as a gift. I am a huge fan of folk metal, and was surprised to find such a dvd existed. The movie however, was as total letdown. The bands featured were subjected to the most assinine, offensive, and completely irreverent questions possible. Instead of using the interviews and live footage to show what an interesting and talented group of people the narrator got to meet, he seems to use the time to show what an uncultured idiot he is. This movie is a toss up, because there are no other documentaries on folk metal yet, Its cool that it exists, however its painful to watch. If you're interested in seeing talented musicians struggle to answer idiotic questions, this is the movie for you. The only up side is that now that world can see how classy and intelligent the members of the featured bands are in their responses. Seriously, the singer from Primordial has the patience of a saint.Pagan Metal: A Documentary (2009) Overview

The Doors: From the Outside (2009) ReviewI can see why some people may not like this documentary. It's dry and British.Yet,it's a wonderful look at what the critics, then and now, think about their music. In 1971,the psychedelic tide had ebbed out.And left many bands ,high and dry.The Doors' music lives on and is still able to find new listeners, generation after generation. This documentary is slow and almost scientific in its approach to explain the 'Doors' influence. If you are a die-hard fan, you'll love this DVD.If you wanted a lot of music, you'll be disappointed here. The Doors were one of the few bands, that was able to ride the vibe and survive, with its unique Blues/Jazz/Hard rock sound. The lyrics were poetic and erudite. And still perfect for Top 40 radio.Oliver Stone's film was entertaining, yet only about thirty percent accurate. And most friends of Jimbo agree that the Lizard King would not have been happy with the film. This documentary also closes with the ambiguity of Morrison's death.Almost all agree his health was poor,so his death was not that big of a shock. But,his Parisian friends felt his health and mood was improving.I feel Morrison was set-up,perhaps by the CIA.Jim's father was a big-wig in the navy, and serving in Vietnam, during the Doors successful launch.Ironically, the Doors were the most popular radio music, over the GI air-waves.Jim having felt distant from his parents, claimed they were even 'dead'.Jim's death has always been shrouded in mystery.I think a pausible story is that the CIA,were closing in on Jim and Pamela Courson.Jim's soul-mate and anima gemella,Pamela, operated a successful L.A. fashion shoppe. While at the Left Bank,Pam sent Jim to pick up some 'packages' for her,at the Rock-n-Roll Circus discotheque. When Jim arrived he encountered the two drug couriers was soundly roughed-up by the two dark-clothed dudes and left in the loo.Jim was helped out,by fellow clubbers, and taken back to his flat. They put him in the bath-tub.And Pamela was then faced with a huge dilemma. If she called the police, her involvement with the drug-dealers would be fully exposed.Whether quick medical attention would have revived him is unknown.Jim expired in the tub,and she needed to have the body quickly interned, before the police became suspicious of 'foul-play' and 'drug-connections'.She was able to have the death ruled 'natural',within two days. Most believed it because of Morrison's depression, bloated frame and declined state of health. This documentary doesn't mention this version, yet does leave the window open to various possiblities of his final where-abouts.This documentary is a must for every true fan of the 'Doors'.The Doors: From the Outside (2009) Overview

Beatles, The Journey ReviewThis was a bizarre "documentary" which had choppy editing, no chronology, no actual Beatles music (all performed by a cover band, not even Beatles-written songs), and an odd choice of what to include, including a 5-minute interview with Mark David Chapman, Lennon's killer. I have seen a lot of Beatles footage, and there were a few things I hadn't seen before, but nothing extraordinary by any means (which is probably why other, better documentaries chose not to show it!). This is an obvious attempt to get money by slapping the name Beatles on something.Beatles, The Journey Overview

Through the Eastern Gate (2007) Reviewhighly recommended - just at the right level: the filmmakers are interested in showing spiritual practice in action, as a daily reality. the film is accessible yet addresses points that will be useful to both the initiate & the more seasoned spiritual traveler, all delivered in an unsentimental, highly personal manner. it is a hard clear look, rare to find in this genre of film which usually sinks into romanticized idealism, superficiality & confusion between spirituality, new-age & liberal politics. this is the real thing!!!

John Coltrane - The World According to John Coltrane (1991) ReviewThis is it folks. This is as close as you'll get to a John Coltrane solo, and hence, according to some, as close as you will get to God in this lifetime. Not only can you hear the notes, but you can see the riveting intensity that consumed Coltrane when he was playing. All the great jazz players can play lots of notes, but Coltrane can tear you up with one note. In addition to ferocious runs up and down the horn Trane plays lots of long searing notes. Just one note, but the attack, the tone, the intensity, the release, are unparalleled in jazz. If you are new to jazz, listen to these notes, they embody the essence of Coltrane, they will tell you all you need to know, for now.
In the tape of "So What" the camera is right in Miles face as he finishes his solo. The picture is perfectly clear, you can see the minutest detail of the expressions on his face as he creates in the moment classic jazz. As he finishes he steps aside as Trane moves up to the mic, playing a few casual notes. Then, immediately, Coltrane reaches white hot intensity, playing long screaming notes alternating with arpeggios defining his harmonic concept. This is it. The Ultimate. It is interesting to see the other players nonchalantly standing about as Trane plays, Occasionally one will look over. The world had never heard music like this before, and Trane was scandalizing critics and fans by the thousands, but these guys were cool. What a moment!
The video is about the music, and are several extended cuts included, along with commentary by musicians that played with Trane, this commentary is not too compelling, but, it does give some idea of how Trane's contemporaries related to him. The only way I can think of to make it better would be to make it longer. Another astounding thing to me is that this footage of Trane in action exists. It appears from this video that there is lots of it. How about a sequel, now that we really need one!
I like the DVD edition, first, because it's digital, indestructible, etc., and second because you can have immediate access to the individual `chapters' making up the disc without scanning through the commentary, etc.John Coltrane - The World According to John Coltrane (1991) OverviewStudio: Bmg Special ProductsRelease Date: 03/19/2002

Life Could Be a Dream - The Doo Wop Sound (2003) ReviewRock and Roll of today did not begin with and was not shaped exclusively by the most marketable stars, like Elvis Presley or by rock performers from the '60's and '70s, as seen, for example, in the emphasis on them in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.(Economics should not drive artistic history, but unfortunately it often does.) Rock and Roll began with and continues to be greatly influenced by rhythm and blues and doo wop, which, in turn, were shaped by other cultural and social forces. This dvd is a great introduction to that music and, as such, adds something important to an historical record severely tainted by economics and an inaccurate, culturally slanted perspective. The production of the dvd is first-rate (I have no connection with the company that makes them), with interviews from important historical figures and musical innovators, such as, Jimmy Merchant from the Teenagers, Pookie Hudson from the Spaniels and Earl "Speedo" Carroll from the Cadillacs. There also is some fine music on this dvd with large chunks from the songs. One gets a sense from this dvd of how badly these creative, young stars and innovators were ripped off financially by the powers that be. Overall, this dvd is a nice introduction to the history and music of doo wop. Hopefully White Star will produce more dvds that focus on the history of this important and wonderful-to-listen-to music. There is so much more to tell, and so much of it has been unjustly ignored and not given proper emphasis in the history of rock and roll.Life Could Be a Dream - The Doo Wop Sound (2003) Overview

Black Metal: The Music Of Satan (2010) ReviewOk, to start it's actually really good. I was skeptical at first because the way the DVD presents itself. Very low grade picture on the case, something you could pick off the internet and slap on there. The disc isn't helpful either, two fully clothed woman with beers. I didn't know what to expect. After you get through that you put the disc in of course.
The movie starts off with some weird intro and that's where I was worried, but honestly if you sit through that, the interviews start coming and they are surprisingly intriguing. Interviews with the guys from Tyr, Nergal from Behemoth, Abbath, Immortal, etc. they all have a point.
There's no narration in this DVD so the only one talking is the person being interviewed. It's strictly a Black Metal DVD IN THEIR OWN WORDS. That's really good actually ya know? A fan made DVD for fans.
It's roughly two hours long and kind of drags in some places, but I did enjoy it. A lot of humor is going on too so it's not all business ya know? I still prefer and recommend Until The Light Takes Us, but I suggest picking this one up it's good for a watch.
Why not 5 stars? Not a whole lot of big questions came up like Mayhem's history, reactions to certain times in BM history, stuff that Die-hard fans love to discuss. The book, Lords of Chaos wasn't brought up either, that would've been a good topic. The humor aspect does get a bit irritating at times, but like I said, I think it's still good. You'll just to have to see for yourself.
Special features include Band introductions which is just that, different bands introducing themselves
Fenriz of Darkthrone has an interview which is very entertaining.
Deleted scenes
& some 1 hour long film about god knows what. That's something you'll just have to watch. I guess it's all based on stuff the director was told he shouldn't do if he wanted to be a famous director, so he made a film in which that's all he did. Stuff like hitler and black face comedy, I don't know.
Well, enjoy.Black Metal: The Music Of Satan (2010) Overview

Bob Dylan Revealed (2011) ReviewI did learn a lot about my man in the '60s and early '70s. I didn't follow his career much after that, so I found this an easy way to catch up, although the DVD does not cover his comeback in 1997. Many talking heads, including various band members, and occasional short interviews from the past provided lots of little details and yet so much was left out too.
The editing could have been tighter to make the 110 minutes less boring; I also didn't like the style of the choppy editing and the lack of a central narrator to fill in and make the transitions smoother and easier to follow. And why must we see the interviewer? Overall, a low budget feel to the production, like his main focus was to have fun with it.
Another disappointment was the lack of any of Dylan's music actually performed by Dylan. There are some detailed reviews on line you can find by doing a Google search, if you're considering a purchase. Nice that our library had a copy to view.Bob Dylan Revealed (2011) Overview

Who The Hell Is Pete Doherty (2005) ReviewThe second half of this DVD, and maybe especially the extended interview in the "extras", does show why Doherty enthralls fans and captivates the media. His talent and charm and intelligence are prodigious, and they shine through even in this second-rate piece of hagiography. But the first half is almost chilling, as Doherty's friends and bandmates come across as the "vampires" of lyrics by Carl Barat, Doherty's former partner in the Libertines. Barat once described Babyshambles as Doherty's "denial band" because it denies that Doherty's crack and heroin use are problems. That really comes through here. The narrator even describes Doherty kicking in Barat's door and stealing from him to sell his treasures as "borrowing", with the things later "showing up" (or some similar term) in a pawnshop. It's disturbing to see Doherty's friends try to insulate him to a destructive degree, and it's to Doherty's credit that they don't seem to fully succeed. But it's painful to hear Doherty's take on Barat's putting the Libertines on ice. It's even sadder to hear what that situation did to him--this is not just some junkie rock star, as toss-off tabloid articles assert, this is a genius songwriter, and anyone who's heard, say, F*** Forever, has to be grateful that he pulled himself out of that and continued writing. But it's tough watching him ramble and bristle while obviously too high to be lucid, much less creative. (As he put it, if he's holding a crack pipe, he's not holding a guitar.) This is not a good documentary by any measure, but in spite of itself, it is a fascinating look at a fascinating talent.Who The Hell Is Pete Doherty (2005) Overview

Girls Rock (2008) ReviewOk, full disclosure here, I'm one of the directors of the film. So, this isn't really a review, but it seemed there wasn't a lot of information about the movie above, so I thought I'd include some here (from the Hot Docs Film Festival Catalog):
At Rock 'n' Roll Camp, girls ranging in age from eight to 18 are taught that it's OK to sweat like a pig, scream like a banshee, wail on their instruments with complete and utter abandon, and that "it is 100% okay to be exactly who you are." The girls have a week to select a band, an instrument they may have never played before, and write a song. In between, they are taught by indie rock chicks such as Carrie Brownstein from Sleater-Kinney various lessons of empowerment from self-defense to anger management. At the end of the week, all the bands perform a concert for over 700 people. The film follows several campers: Laura, a Korean adoptee obsessed by death metal; Misty, who is emerging from a life of meth addiction, homelessness and gang activity; and Amelia, an eight-year-old who writes experimental rock songs about her dog Pipi. What happens to the girls as they are given a temporary reprieve from being sexualized, analyzed and pressured to conform is truly moving and revolutionary.Girls Rock (2008) Overview

Cannibal Corpse: Centuries of Torment (2008) ReviewLike the title of the review says, Centuries Of Torment isn't meant to be Live Cannibalism 2. So if that's what you're expecting, you're likely to be disappointed. It's more like what 15 Year Killing Spree was, but more of a visual history of the band. Disc 1 is a 3 hour documentary on 20 years of the band, from the early days to today. All of the members, old and current are featured (with the exception of guitarist Bob Rusay), including original vocalist Chris Barnes. 20 years seems like a lot to cram in, and 3 hours is a long time, but if you're patient, it's worth viewing. Disc 2 has live performances from 1989 to 2007. I've loved both eras of the band, but the more recent footage shown is better not because of the performance, but the audio quality. You're kinda reminded of Monolith Of Death when you're watching the older footage on here. While that dvd wasn't a total disaster, it wasn't worth buying. The more recent footage from 2005-2007 is where the quality improves. The Toronto 2006 show is probably my favorite one eventhough the sound is tinny at first, but it improves by the middle of the second song. Second favorite performance is Party.San 2005. If you didn't get enough from the first disc, Disc 3 shows extra footage where they talk about artist Vince Locke, the ban on their first three albums, fan tattoos, Metalocalypse, merch, lyrics, and more. I'm sure that there may be some stuff missing from the documentary, but then it'd probably end up being 4 hours long. Either way, if you're a fan, buy this now.Cannibal Corpse: Centuries of Torment (2008) Overview

Various Artists ReviewLike the previous other 2 Jackass Soundtracks this one will also pump you up. Great Music All Around!!! Twisted Sister, CKY, The Smut Peddlers, and of course Roger Alan Wade. @ more Remixs of "If You're Gonna Be Dumb" and "Corona" and even 2 songs not in the movie. The only thing I missed that the others had is the snippets of the Jackass Gang between songs. But other than that it ROCKS!!!Various Artists Overview

And This Is Free: The Life and Times of Chicago's Legendary Maxwell St. (2008) ReviewThis is an outstanding release--the subject is Maxwell St. Chicago,a legendary marketplace and breeding ground for some of the finest blues music ever made--and as could be expected some fairly eccentric characters emerged.
The DVD consists of two b/w films,And This Is Free and Maxwell Street;A Living Memory--both are excellent and include some fine music from the street, including Robert Nighthawk. An excellent 36page booklet include many great photos and information, plus a 17track CD of blues that you could have heard back in the day.Plus some excellent extras which all add up to a great record of a place in time that sadly is now gone but not forgotten thanks to this release.
A lot of work has gone into this and we should all appreciate everybody concerned for there fine work--anyone interested in blues history, Chicago, the history of America, life-----anybody left!!!---you will enjoy. Support this release, the only way we can get more. And This Is Free: The Life and Times of Chicago's Legendary Maxwell St. (2008) Overview

Lamb of God: Walk With Me in Hell (2008) ReviewKilladelphia was a perfect dvd to compliment Lamb Of God not only for their live performance, but the honest "warts n' all" portrayal of the band during the documentary footage (see infamous Glasgow fistfight for example). Here we are 3 years later after the release of Killadelphia, and we now have Walk With Me In Hell, a 2 hour documentary on the release of the much anticipated Sacrament and the tour that followed. While there's not so much fighting or drama here like Killadelphia, this dvd doesn't shy away from the realism. If 2 hours isn't enough for you, extras include live performances, plus the complete show from the 2007 Download festival, the making of Sacrament (the same documentary featured on the bonus dvd included in the special edition of Sacrament, perfect for anybody that doesn't have it), the official video for Redneck, and making of the video. While there are other killer band dvd's that are out (Unearth, God Forbid) and coming out (Cannibal Corpse, Nevermore) this year, this is simply one to get.Lamb of God: Walk With Me in Hell (2008) Overview

Charles Bukowski - There's Gonna Be a God Damn Riot in Here (2008) ReviewI bought this for my husband, a lifelong Bukowski fan. He was very happy with it.
This dvd features Charles Bukowski at a poetry reading in Canada, in 1979. He reads for less than two hours. During that time, he interacts with the immature crowd and drinks 4 bottles of red red wine. He also smokes some kind of cigarettes from India, and lights them over and over; to me what looked like a nervous habit.
The video was shot from within the crowd, and you can hear the obnoxious braying laughter of one particular man throughout the entire tape.
Equally annoying is the fact that so many people are laughing at poems that simply weren't intended to be humorous. And then there are a few people in the audience who find themselves repeatedly shushed by Bukowski, because they continually talk over his readings.
All in all, it gives those of us not entirely familiar with the Bukowski live reading format the opportunity to see it, and the old Buk fans will certainly love this as much as anything else they can get their hands on that are related to the late-great Charles Bukowski.
A poetry reading - short, sweet and simple. Or is it?Charles Bukowski - There's Gonna Be a God Damn Riot in Here (2008) OverviewThere's Gonna Be a God Damn Riot in Here! is a documentary DVD of a 1979 poetry reading by Charles Bukowski, one of his last. The producers recognized that the value of the performance was not simply the poems, but was, in fact, the entire spontaneous, confrontational event. The footage is only slightly edited to avoid duplicating poems with The Last Straw!, a DVD of Bukowski's last reading in Redondo Beach, California.
