Big Daddy ReviewI have no idea why Rufus would have a song on this inane movie's soundtrack, but he does. This is the main reason to buy this CD. Garbage is great as well, and Sheryl Crow is ok, I like her cover of "Sweet Child of Mine", but she will never rock it like Axl Rose. Keep trying, maybe she can cover Motley Crue "Shout at the Devil" next. MAIN POINT, RUFUS IS DA MAN.Big Daddy Overview

Damage: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack ReviewZbigniew Preisner captures the perfect music for such an emotionally charged movie. The melodies fill you with the sadness and despair that the charcters are portraying on the screen. Rarely do you find a movie where the music is just as powerful as the acting! Louis Malle definitely chose the right composer to bring everything together so brilliantly.Damage: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Overview

The Great Escape (Score) ReviewThis is a magnificent score. But, you should be aware that master tapes of the complete orignal score were found in the MGM library earlier this year. These were thought to no longer exist. These are to be released (and may have been already in Europe) on a two-CD set with at least 42 cues. The Great Escape (Score) Overview

Rules of Attraction ReviewIt seems that nobody figured out that the songs on this cd are in the exact order that they appear in the film.
Carol of the Bells by tomandandy is the song that plays during the opening sequence at the party. Great Instrumental (4/5)
The song playing when Sean wakes up in the sprinklers is Six Different Ways by The Cure. Reminded me of being in the womb again (5/5)
The song playing when Paul is dancing at the end of the world party (when he's flirting with Mitch) Out of the Races and On to the Tracks - The Rapture. Great Garage/Indie song. (5/5)
When Lauren and Sean wake up and end up meeting each other is Colours by Donova. Mellow track (4/5)
Situation - Yaz A neat 80s Electro song. (4/5)
Sunday Girl - Blondie A Nice Classic(5/5)
So Alive - Love and Rockets (4/5)
Pre-Saturday Night Party Party - tomandandy (3/5)
I can't remember the precise moment that these songs come up in the movie. Situation might be the song that's playing in the car when Harry? (Jay Baruchel) is ODing.

Afternoon Delight - Starland Vocal Band. The song where Sean is erm... well... pleasures himself, anticipating a night with Lauren (4/5)
Faith by George Michael (The scene with Dick and Paul in their underwear) is missing from the soundtrack and that's a bummer because it's one of the best scenes.
The song from the Dress to get screwed party that's missing from the soundtrack is When I get you alone by Thicke there's a sample from the phantom of the opera. It's also an awesome song, but it would mess up this CD's lineup.
Without You - Harry Nilsson. The song where the food service girl kills herself. A Classic (4/5)

European Vacation - tomandandy Victor is talking about his trip, I didn't need to here the whole narration though. (3/5)
The Gentleman Who Fell - Milla Jovovich I don't remember when this song comes up but I hate it anyways (2/5)
Snow Theater/Final Steps - tomandandy This is one of the best songs, when Paul and Sean both realize that they'll never get the one that they love. (5/5)
Stop - Erasure the awesome 80s song from the credits (5/5)Rules of Attraction Overview

Chicago - A Musical Vaudeville (1975 Original Broadway Cast) Review... why this show flopped the first time around (yeah, yeah, "A Chorus Line"... biiiig deal... wow.). And why people don't realize what an absolutely TERRIFIC recording this is. First of all, just look at the names. GWEN VERDON (which, alone, is enough to make me gape in awe). CHITA RIVERA. JERRY ORBACH. I mean, these are absolutely brilliant performers. Let me tell you a little about each song, maybe that will help you in your decision to purchase this CD.
-The Overture is a LOT of fun. VERY roaring 20's ish.
-All That Jazz. FUN SONG! And, to me, this is Chita's baby. Nobody can perform it like her... BeBe came CLOSE... but this is Chita's song all the way. Such spirit.
-Funny Honey: Gwen does such a great job with this song... and I LOVE to hear her sing "Lord knows he ain't got the smarts!" I prefer Gwen's Roxie to Ann's because... well, as much as I love Ann Reinking, her voice is so grainy and rough hewn on this song. Gwen's is breathy and throaty, but still girlish enough to make you feel kinda sorry for Roxie. Gwen is so fantastic in this song! Marvelous!
-Cell Block Tango: I haven't heard a bad version of this song yet... but this song is my favorite... just to hear Chita go "I didn't do it!" And the Liz is SPECTACULAR with her "So I said to him I said, 'BERNIE! You pop that gum one... more... time.' And he did. So I took the shotgun off the wall, and I fired two warning shots. Into his head!"
-When You're Good To Mama: Mary McCarty does a GREAT job with this song... she and Vicki Lewis sing it very similar, which I think is great.
-All I Care About: Jerry Orbach RULES as Billy Flynn. I mean, he just sounds so much more... sleazy and... sneaky... and like some crooner out of the 20s than James Naughton. The man has an amazing voice, which, up until I heard this, I didn't know. (Idiot me didn't realize he was Lumiere in Beauty & The Beast... go figure!)
-A Little Bit Of Good: Just listen to M. O'Haughey hit those high notes. You'll understand. :o)
-We Both Reached For The Gun: Fun and a half on this one, ladies and gentlemen! Again, the high point in this song is to hear Gwen Verdon go "Are you kiddin'?!" But it's a truly great, fast, fun song!
-Roxie: Okay, FAR SUPERIOR to ANY version I have EVER heard done of this song, including that of Ann Reinking and Ruthie Henshall. This is classic, wonderful, ever-sparklin' Gwen Verdon. I mean, had I ever been around in 1975 to see her do this number... I'd have probably fainted. Her vocals are terrific, and the song is just so much fun... and not as choppy and wavering between speaking and singing as the other versions are. Gwen's absolutely TERRIFIC in this song, she sparkles like no one else ever did and ever will again!
-I Can't Do It Alone: Another rousing rendition of a song by Chita. Lots of fun... you'll run around going "She'd say 'What's ya sista like?!' I'd say 'MEN!' Yuk yuk yuk!" for days!
-My Own Best Friend: Beautiful, beautiful song sung by two beautiful ladies with beautiful voices.
-Me And My Baby: Some people don't like the ballad version that Gwen sings as much as the jazzier version. Oh well, this one's still cute as it can be. Gotta adore Gwen.
-Mr. Cellophane: Barney Martin does a superb job with this song! Chalk one up for him!
-When Velma Takes The Stand: Chita shines again... ya gotta love her.
-Razzle Dazzle: I like this version of Razzle Dazzle more than James Naughton's, and ESPECIALLY more than the way they did it in "Fosse"... all... slow and what not. Jerry Orbach's vocals again work their magic.
-Class: Chita and Mary McCarty belt out this one! Great fun, and great voices!
-Nowadays: Gwen does a GREAT job with the solo at the beginning... I've often heard said that Gwen was not a first rate singer, but I don't see what's so bad about her voice. Maybe she's not Shirley Jones or Ethel Merman, but she's anything BUT off-key and she's got SPIRIT. She brings a lot of spirit to the first half. Then, she and Chita make a harmonious sound together in the second half... it's wonderful just to hear their devilish little laughs after "It's gonnnnna change, ya know... hahaha!"
-All That Jazz Reprise: And it closes with a bang from Chita, belting out "All That Jazz"!
All in all, this is a GREAT CD, and a must have for die hard "Chicago" fans, die hard Gwen Verdon fans (such as myself), and die hard Chita Rivera fans.
This is ALSO a GREAT CD if you just want a recording from "Chicago". It's a masterpiece in my eyes, and you won't regret purchasing it.Chicago - A Musical Vaudeville (1975 Original Broadway Cast) Overview

The Big Hit: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack ReviewThe Big Hit is one of the funniest action comedies around. It's funny, intense, crude, and campy. Despite it's over-the-top nature, certain parts of the movie are surprisingly subtle. The soundtrack pulls off the same effect. As ethnicly eclectic as its cast, the cd sports an impressive assortment of genres. My one protest is the exclusion of "The World Is New" by Save Ferris, which is one of the best songs in the movie. It's quite an interesting album, it turned me on to a whole spectrum of genres which I had never explored. A signifigant companion to the movie. The Big Hit: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Overview

The Aviator ReviewFirst, this is not the background score for the film THE AVIATOR but rather the actual, original period songs that Scorsese used to create atmosphere to the scenes.
Any sophisticated movie-goer knows that Marty Scorsese always chooses his music very carefully. This time, to invoke the jazz era of an America emerging on the world stage (just as Hughes is emerging in the public mind), Scorsese has provided an amazing compilation of popular music from the 1920s and 1930s. Sonically, these recordings are pristine and sound better than they ever could off of old RCA radios or 78 rpm records. The songs are of the big-band/swing flavor with a wide variety of artists represented. If you like this sort of thing, you will enjoy this CD. (Don't miss the closing track: Lead Belly's "Howard Hughes." No doubt this was added not just for thematic reasons, but also because Lead Belly was the first blues musician that moved Scorsese.)
And in case you haven't gotten enough of this era, you may want to check out the soundtracks to THE CAT'S MEOW (for mostly re-recorded songs weighted towards the 1920s) and RADIO DAYS (for actual, original songs weighted towards the late 1930s and early 40s). There is little overlap between these collections, so they make for a nice set.The Aviator Overview

Kiss The Girls: Selections From The Motion Picture Soundtrack ReviewThe 2 stars I gave the soundtrack is for Mark Isham's score ONLY... NOT the songs. If you buy "Kiss the Girls" I gotta say " you should have got Jerry Goldsimth" because "Along came a spider" is much better. This album is appealing but the songs just don't fit the environment of the movie. Mark Isham's score is good, rich scary music,--BUT-- the songs just don't cut it! ... and sooo many key tracks are not on here!. Just try Along came a spider first and then get Kiss the Girls. It could have been good.Kiss The Girls: Selections From The Motion Picture Soundtrack Overview

Step Up 3D (OST) ReviewI love dance movies because in general, they have awesome soundtracks. Step Up in 3D certainly doesn't disappoint. These songs may not say something profound about the world but they can certainly make you want to dance. While there are several nice club songs, my favorite is definitely "Bust Your Windows" by Jazmine Sullivan--the song is a slower with a sensual vibe more fitting the tango than getting crunk. The majority of the album though is mostly r&b/rap with a definite dance influence with lots of synthesized sounds. Perfect for a summer night.Step Up 3D (OST) Overview

Crank ReviewLoved the movie, loved the soundtrack even more. Hearing the songs i remember from the 80's put into a hard core movie like this was such a trip. Takes me back to the good old days. :)
The big bonus on the cd is actual clips from the movie before certain songs. Though the sticker on the cd told you about the snippets from the movie it still was so unexpected.
great job to the producers and everyone who put this great soundtrack together!Crank Overview

Les Miserables (1998 Film Version) ReviewThere are few soundtracks that set my blood racing: this is one of them. Mr. Poledouris' musical rendition for Victor Hugo's "Les Miserables" is, quite simply, epic. From the prison quarries to Paris, from the struggle between mercy and justice (Val Jean and Javert), to tenderness and battle (Cosette and the ABC Club), Poledouris has captured it all. The main theme evokes images not only the policeman on the hunt, but the students on the barricade - in one spectacular brass arrangement. A particular favourite is the beginning of track three, where the simplicity of Val Jean and Cosette's relationship (in a delicate flute) is suddenly contrasted with the bustle of the Parisian streets (in bubbling woodwinds and strings). Perhaps the only complaint is that the CD has four tracks (or suites), making the voluntary shift between individual strains difficult to impossible. However, this limitation DOES retain the epic congruity of the novel and the album, a stroke of thoughtful genius from the label. Lovers of the novel, the movie, the play, or simply majestic symphonies, will well enjoy this brilliant composition.Les Miserables (1998 Film Version) Overview

Oklahoma (1964 Studio Cast) ReviewI liked this 1964 studio cast album of Oklahoma for what it has to offer, but it is lacking the meaning, sincerity, and lustre of all other recordings of the show that preceeded this one. John Raitt and Florence Henderson are both wonderful in their roles, just as good as those that went before them in the film and the original Broadway production. Supporting cast is ideal as well. Entirely new orchestrations have been arranged and really do a disservice to the beautiful original orchestrations in place since 1943 (I believe the 1955 movie version altered some but did not incorporate all-new orchestrations). My first impression when listening to the Overture was that it sounds more like a childrens' sing along record than one of Broadway's greatest triumphs. Sound quality and presentation are wonderful throughout. This is a worthy addition to your collection, but if Columbia/Sony really wants to make my day, they'll remaster and re-release their 1952 studio cast recording of Oklahoma, with Nelson Eddy as Curly, into their "Broadway Masterworks" series. I HIGHLY recommend that recording if you are fortunate enough to find it. I believe it is still in print.Oklahoma (1964 Studio Cast) Overview

Okuribito (Departures) ReviewLast month I had the pleasure of catching the Oscar winning film OKURIBITO (aka DEPARTURES) at my local Landmark theater). I completely fell in love with the film about a man who finds a new calling in the field of Nokanshi (or encoffineer) after his orchestra is dismissed due to poor finances. What really made this film so endearing to me is the gorgeous classical film score by Joe Hisaishi, the same composer who has worked on numerous Hiyao Miyazaki films. I was particularly moved by his song "Memory". The haunting melodies of the song had brought tears to my ears through out the film. It is rare that a film score could do that to me but Joe's beautiful composition did. The soundtrack is about 44 minutes long. I had to scour the internet to find a copy of the soundtrack at a decent price. I was fortunate that I did and I was not disappointed by what I heard. This soundtrack is definitely worth owning if you loved the movie as much as I do.Okuribito (Departures) Overview

Jesus' Son: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (1999 Film) ReviewThe soundtrack to "Jesus' Son" is a superb collection of songs that wonderfully serves the film's grim yet hopeful tale of a junkie's odyssey through despair into redemption. Many of the tracks are period pieces from the era in which the story is based, accurately evoking the awkward transition from the free-thinking 60s into the less-assured 70s.
Floyd Cramer's piano on "Last Date" opens the disc on a suitably melancholy note, reflecting the heartache present throughout the film. That mood never dissipates. Even an upbeat tune like Tommy Roe's bubblegum classic "Sweet Pea" sounds sad, having heard it within the context of Alison Mclean's film (despite the fact it is used during a pretty hot dance of seduction by Samantha Morton).
Joe Henry's cover of "Unchain My Heart", and the two songs by Wilco will interest the alternative country fan base, as will Doug Sahm's brilliant "(Is Anybody Going To) San Antone?" - after all, he influenced legions of country and roots-rock acts.
But for my money, the real bounty here is the inclusion of SSgt. Barry Sadler's "The Ballad of the Green Berets", Barbara Mason's "Yes I'm Ready", Paul Revere and the Raiders' "Indian Reservation", and the aforementioned "Sweet Pea". What a joy to have these great songs close at hand without having to scrounge through the old, scratchy 45 collection. These tunes are too good to be relegated to a K-Tel "Baby Boomer Hits" compilation.Jesus' Son: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (1999 Film) Overview

Guardians of Clouds ReviewThis is one of the best CD's I have purchased over the last few years. The combination of the melancholic Argentinian Bandoneon and the haunting Irish Uileann Pipes is remarkable. I never thought that I would hear a better version of the original Gabriel's Oboe from the Mission, but track 1 on this CD is a joy to listen to. The singing on Track 6 - Antiga Palavra is stunning. The most relaxing CD I have listened to for years.Guardians of Clouds Overview
