Black Metal: The Norwegian Legacy (2008) ReviewFirst off, not all of the bands are Norwegian or even black metal. It started out with some useful information, but then then there were just some dragged out clips of live shows. The guy who made this also makes some of the worst "horror" movies I've ever seen, and not in the good way.Black Metal: The Norwegian Legacy (2008) Overview

Damage: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack ReviewZbigniew Preisner captures the perfect music for such an emotionally charged movie. The melodies fill you with the sadness and despair that the charcters are portraying on the screen. Rarely do you find a movie where the music is just as powerful as the acting! Louis Malle definitely chose the right composer to bring everything together so brilliantly.Damage: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Overview

Andres Lopez: Me Pido La Ventana (2007) ReviewIf I was stranded on a desert island and could pick only two DVD's to keep my going through the hard times...these would be the DVD's!!!!
I find it hard to believe that with today's technology, people find it difficult to watch a DVD in Zone 4. Refer to your DVD player's user manual to select the Zone or go online and see what information you can use.
Being married to a Colombian woman and to be from North America, Andres comedy transcends generations and cultures. His comedy covers all aspects of life, love, and family and it doesn't matter where you are from, what your nationality may be or which generation you are, Andres captures not only the Colombian people but the global population with perfection!
Colombians...you should be very proud of Andres, your country, and your people!!!

Bjork: Inside Bjork (2003) ReviewSent to music school at the age of 5, and at the age of 11 released her first album. But, she felt funny about it, 'cause it wasn't her work. Then she got involved in punk. Shows GREAT video of Einar Orn in Purrkur Pillnikk and Bjork in Tappi Tikkarass, and shows her book Um Urnat! And clips from the Kukl video "Anna"! Then the Sugarcubes, one of the first people they talk to is Beck, who discusses hearing Birthday for the first time.. the video for "Birthday" is shown.
Then Bjork moves on to her solo career, looking for new challenges. She collaborates with Graham Massey, on songs she had written since childhood. It shows an adorable clip of her singing "The Anchor Song" accompanying herself on an old pedal organ, in a little church. With gorgeous sights of Iceland.
She explains the mood of each album: Debut is like a polite new-comer, and Post is like a wide eyed girl consumed by the city and the city is consuming her. She talks about the story of Isobel, called Isobel, because of the ISO-lation. Elton John says: "A lot of people who aren't that musical, say "oh it's a lot of rubbish, it's noise", but it's not, it's extremely clever. And it's far more sophisticated then most things that are out there, by a hundred thousand times." (Agreed!)
According to Bjork, Homogenic is about a person put in an impossible situation, with a lot of pressure. She'd work 16 hours a day, rarely with a day off. Homogenic is like a warrior, not one with weapons, but one with love. Homogenic was like a "blue period" for her. She discusses Joga, like a national anthem with patriotic strings. She collected actual volcanic beats, for the song.
RZA dicusses Norse mythology with surprising insight. About how Iceland is filled with such fascinating mythology, about the different deities. And how Bjork is kind of a "warrior princess" :-)
Bjork discusses that she thought she was at first an atheist, but then she matured and realized she did have a religion, nature. She discusses her love hate relationship with classical music.

Then onto Dancer in The Dark. Just seeing and hearing the clips made me choke up. That movie is so sad. She's not a trained actor, she worked by instinct. And Sean Penn point's out "If someones preserves their instinct from a young age, training becomes an inhibitor"
And of course, it discusses the swan dress, and Elton John expresses his wrath about the critisism it got, AGREED!
Bjork: "The girl in Dancer in the Dark, was very introverted and kind of heard of all these noises in her head, like a locked universe". And Vespertine is about an internal world, what happens under her skin. Shows the videos for Pagan Poetry Cocoon..and Bjork discusses Icelandic passion.
Then the film tells about how she has now left Europe and settled in New York, and shows her working on a computer with her microbeats. And she discusses Matmos. And Matmos talk about their interesting collaboration with her, and shows them on the Vespertine tour. Lastly shows her singing Generous Palmstroke.
She says when people were asking what kind of music she did, she said "some kind of modern folk music".:-)
Throughout when they talk to her, she's so sweet and funny. Often making jokes. She has a cute laugh..
I was kind of disappointed they didn't talk to Einar Orn, but oh well. Certainly can't complain!
I was absolutely bursting, It made me love her even more. She's my favorite artist and no one on earth can equal her, she's unparalleled. She's genuine, uncorrupted and uncliched. Great item for the curious or a necessity for the obsessed (like me). Good price too. Money well spent. Buy it!Bjork: Inside Bjork (2003) Overview

Stephane Grappelli: A Life in the Jazz Century ReviewI can't say enough about this DVD. Not only do you get to see Grappelli in various photos and film/video clips over a 60 year period playing with the likes of Nigel Kennedy, Martin Taylor, Yehudi Menuhin, Diz Dizley, and Django Reinhardt (supposedly every Django clip known), you also get to see him in a number of settings including a taping of This Is Your Life back in the 70s when his daughter and grandsons joined him on stage.
The documentary begins with the story of his early years and a reinactment of a twelve year old Grappelli playing his student violin in a courtyard in Paris. From there we learn about his earlier career as a silent movie pianist and a pianist/violinist with Gregor and the Gregorians (great accompanying film here). From there we see him meeting up with Django and forming the Hot Club Quintet where they performed for seven years before some of the biggest celebrities of their day and changed jazz forever. Following the story of the breakup of the band prompted by the outbreak of WWII in England, we see the Stephane Grappelli Quintet and are introduced to the surviving octogenarian bassist from that band. Next is the reunion with Django and the story of his untimely death, followed by an account of the lean years for swing music (late 40s and 50s) where Stephane played mostly in restaurants in England and France. The part I truly enjoyed is the story of the rebirth of Grappelli's career after the Cambridge Folk Festival where a whole new generation of jazz and folk music fans discovered his genius and unique musical style. Finally, we see Grappelli's final years where he is still being productive and creative, although his health is obviously declining. (The interviews with Grappelli were recorded a year before his death when he was 88 and quite weak).
Also included on this 2 DVD set are a photo montage, a behind the scenes account of the making of the documentary, interviews with Nigel Kennedy, Diz Dizley, and Martin Taylor, a promo for the movie, 11 bonus chapters, 7 music archive clips, research notes, a bibliography, a discography, internet links, and a map of Montmartre where Grappelli grew up. In addition the viewer is given the option of watching the movie with the creator's commentaries, or with subtitles. (Trust me, you'll need subtitles for most of the interviews with Grappelli.)
My only disappointment is that there were no video clips or references to Grappelli playing with people like Jean-Luc Ponty, David Grisman, and Mark O'Connor. To me that would have made this DVD effort flawless. Still, this is too good to deserve anything less than 5 stars. Great job, guys.Stephane Grappelli: A Life in the Jazz Century Overview

Black Metal Satanica ReviewThis documental it's ok, but in my opinion need more interviews with some elemental bands in black metal, it center more, in the third generetaion of black metal, so if you want to see, just photos of newspapers about what happened in the early days, and the history of the murder of Euronymous and all that mess, it's ok, and well, if you don't understand english, don't buy it, it doesn't have subtitles.Black Metal Satanica Overview

One Big Trip (+ DVD) ReviewI love this CD/DVD. Features new material by Del, J5, Heiroglyphics, Swollen Members, Dilated peoples and some other sick artists. This cd is an even full sound of some of the best talent in hiphop. The sound is deep, bassy and original. I love "the Del" showing up on a few other tracks. The DVD is a nice addition. Featuring the movie One Big Trip. A bunch of guys and girls going cross-country doing the best "highs" while waiting for the millenium and interviewing people on the street. The DVD also features other extras. Like interviews. News reports and the informercial had me laughing non-stop. I highly recommend this item. One Big Trip (+ DVD) Overview

The Book of Pooh - Fun With Make Believe (2001) ReviewThis video is DREADFUL. It should NOT be sold under Manners. ONLY ONE of the four stories even REMOTELY relates to manners and it sends a confusing message with Piglet's asking Tigger to "Please stop saying 'please.'" The other three stories are irrelevant and time-wasters if you SERIOUSLY bought this video to teach any manners. Also, a child would have to be a good reader to understand the point of the second story about a confusing WRITTEN note left by Pooh. IT has nothing to do with manners, either. This is a "get your money back" piece of mislabelling. The Book of Pooh - Fun With Make Believe (2001) Overview

Through the Eastern Gate (2007) Reviewhighly recommended - just at the right level: the filmmakers are interested in showing spiritual practice in action, as a daily reality. the film is accessible yet addresses points that will be useful to both the initiate & the more seasoned spiritual traveler, all delivered in an unsentimental, highly personal manner. it is a hard clear look, rare to find in this genre of film which usually sinks into romanticized idealism, superficiality & confusion between spirituality, new-age & liberal politics. this is the real thing!!!

John Coltrane - The World According to John Coltrane (1991) ReviewThis is it folks. This is as close as you'll get to a John Coltrane solo, and hence, according to some, as close as you will get to God in this lifetime. Not only can you hear the notes, but you can see the riveting intensity that consumed Coltrane when he was playing. All the great jazz players can play lots of notes, but Coltrane can tear you up with one note. In addition to ferocious runs up and down the horn Trane plays lots of long searing notes. Just one note, but the attack, the tone, the intensity, the release, are unparalleled in jazz. If you are new to jazz, listen to these notes, they embody the essence of Coltrane, they will tell you all you need to know, for now.
In the tape of "So What" the camera is right in Miles face as he finishes his solo. The picture is perfectly clear, you can see the minutest detail of the expressions on his face as he creates in the moment classic jazz. As he finishes he steps aside as Trane moves up to the mic, playing a few casual notes. Then, immediately, Coltrane reaches white hot intensity, playing long screaming notes alternating with arpeggios defining his harmonic concept. This is it. The Ultimate. It is interesting to see the other players nonchalantly standing about as Trane plays, Occasionally one will look over. The world had never heard music like this before, and Trane was scandalizing critics and fans by the thousands, but these guys were cool. What a moment!
The video is about the music, and are several extended cuts included, along with commentary by musicians that played with Trane, this commentary is not too compelling, but, it does give some idea of how Trane's contemporaries related to him. The only way I can think of to make it better would be to make it longer. Another astounding thing to me is that this footage of Trane in action exists. It appears from this video that there is lots of it. How about a sequel, now that we really need one!
I like the DVD edition, first, because it's digital, indestructible, etc., and second because you can have immediate access to the individual `chapters' making up the disc without scanning through the commentary, etc.John Coltrane - The World According to John Coltrane (1991) OverviewStudio: Bmg Special ProductsRelease Date: 03/19/2002

The Art of Piano - Great Pianists of 20th Century (1999) ReviewHaving owned the videotape of this program I was pleased to get the new DVD version. It has additions to the tape. For one thing, although conducted primarily in English, there are English subtitles for those bits that are conducted in languages other than English. And there are also Japanese, Spanish and French subtitles for those who wish them. Some of the film footage is simply magnificent and extremely rare. For instance, one sees the elderly Francis Plante playing brilliantly; born in 1839, he had actually heard Chopin play! There is some tendency to cut away from music footage in order to continue the voice-over narration, and that is understandable, but it is also occasionally frustrating. Some have complained that there are only two female pianists represented - a long and impressive bit with Dame Myra Hess, and an uncredited bit underneath the credits with Annie Fischer - but then there are plenty of other male pianists who could have been included, too. The makers of the film only had two hours with which to work, so one can understand the omissions. There is a minimum of fawning, a fair amount of substantive information - both plusses. For those of us who are fascinated by both piano technique and ever-changing pianistic styles this DVD is indispensable. It was wonderful to see lengthy bits featuring, among others, Benno Moiseiwitsch, Josef Hofmann, Claudio Arrau, Emil Gilels, Sviatoslav Richter, Arturo Benedetto Michelangeli, György Cziffra, Alfred Cortot, Arthur Rubinstein and to have interviews with current musicians like Sir Colin Davis, Stephen Kovacevich, Daniel Barenboim, Piotr Anderszewski, Tamás Vasáry, and Gary Graffman.
Recommended.

Thomas the Tank Engine And Friends - Make Someone Happy (2002) ReviewMy son - 3 yrs now - has enjoyed Thomas stories & videos for about 1.5 years. But I have to say I'm often torn ... these engines really are quite crabby & cranky & rude to each other. It all comes out in the wash, & everyone makes up in the end, but ... gee they're rude. And I spend a lot of time encouraging my little tyke NOT to be rude. To be kind & compassionate! So what's a mother to do?
It's interesting that now, he will not watch any of the story videos, prefering those with only songs. If a story comes on, he insists that we forward FAST to the next song. I guess he's also tired of the crabbing & back-biting! (Sounds awful, but they really do!)
These videos cannot be beaten for the sheer beauty of the world they create - can I PLEASE go live on the Island of Sodor?! I just wish the Rev. Awbrey (sp!) had made his engines a little kinder!Thomas the Tank Engine And Friends - Make Someone Happy (2002) Overview

Michael Jackson: Never Surrender (2009) ReviewIt just has the a different cover and no footage as describe. The description is not at all what is on the dvd. Total waste of money. I personally hated A remarkable life, am very unhappy to be fooled into buying it again.Michael Jackson: Never Surrender (2009) Overview
