Fun With the Fab Four (2000) ReviewWhen my friend brought her copy of "Fun with the Fab Four" over to my house today, I thought it looked stupid. The name does make it sound as though it will be, but when she told me it was not, I agreed to watch it. Especially when I found out the Midsummer Nights Dream sketch was in it, something I had been dyeing to see ever since I first saw a picture of John in those pigtails. Anyway, as the other reviewers have said, if you'r not much of a beatles fan, stear clear. This is really only for those leaning toward obsessive. If you are like me, (I bought Ringo a sixty-fourth birthday present) this dvd is a wonder beyond your wildest dreams. The interviews are interesting and almost constantly hilareous, and the Midsummer Nights Dream sketch is worth it all on its own. That sketch is quite possibly the funniest thing I have ever seen. ("I'm the man on the moon, this is my thorn branch, and this doggie woggie here is my dog!" ...priceless) The part from Japanese television in which the picture didn't match the sound was confusing (Ringo's mouth is moving, but John's voice is coming out!), but apart from that, I think it is one of my favorite Beatles DVDs, and I own a good amount (anthology, unauthorized, A hard days night, help, magical mystery tour, and soon Let it Be, hopefully), all of which I hold in very high regard. I plan to buy Fun with the Fab Four as soon as possible, and at the price it has, there is no reason to pass it up! Its going for a penny in the used section! oh, and if anyone knows where to get George Harrison's pirate song sketch from Eric Idle's television program, Id be much obliged. thanks!Fun With the Fab Four (2000) Overview

The Arsenal of Megadeth ReviewDave Mustaine unleashes his band's arsenal but doesn't empty the barrels on this 2 disc set. The DVD is basically the Chronology of Megadeth, through various TV clips as well as music videos and commercial spots. It's a very interesting DVD because even though it clocks in at close to 3 hours for both discs total, it doesn't at all seem like you spent 3 hours watching it. The presentation is A plus, even though a few videos weren't included. One thing I would've liked was if Mustaine actually explained the departure and addition of members, not to sling mud, but maybe to shed light on why he chose who he chose, as he does have a history of picking un-metal players and making total metal shredders out of them. Bonus features are, well their really are none. Also thereis this constant gapping or "Bleeping", as it seems Mustaine has chosen to edit his language based on his new beliefs. The mix of music videos and Live footage is great, a lot of videos that went by I had no idea they made. I was really happy with this release, I'm definetly not the biggest Megadeth fan in the world, but this DVD was a great reminder to me and you as well of how great this band really is. I'm giving this a 4.The Arsenal of Megadeth Overview

Chick Corea Elektric Band: Live at Montreux 2004 (2005) ReviewChick Corea has been the most important Jazz Musician since Miles Davis, and this DVD shows that he still is just that. Joining Chick are all 4 original members of the Elektric Band. Each memeber of the Elektric band is quite possibly the best performer at his instrument. Eric Marienthal is a great sax player and performs at a top level during this whole set. John Patitucci is an amazing bass player. His standard fingering bass technique is nothing short of greatness; His phrasing and playing on this show that. Dave Weckl is one of the best drummers on the planet and has been for decades. His playing on this DVD is a must hear for drummers. He has taken his virtuosity to a new level. Frank Gambale is one of the best Fusion guitarists alive. His sweep picking technique has been a major influence on guitarists since the mid 1980's and he is spellbinding to hear. Together, they are the most talented group of musicians touring together on the planet. I have never seen a better band.(Some on the same level, but none better) During the 80's/90s this group recorded 4 great Cds together and I saw all of those tours. The decade between those cds and "To The Stars" didn't do anything to their compositions, telepathic interplay, virtuosity or live performance. This DVD captures the band at their most incredible state yet.The DVD is quality with good camera work and sound. The performance totals over 2 1/2 hours!

The concert is in two parts. The first part is a live version of the "Two The Stars" CD. Like all other CCEB tours, the music is taken to greater heights. The band improvises greatly and on "Check Blast", "Mistress Luck", and "The Long Passage" the band takes turns amazing the audience and each other. All members of the band applaud for each other and Chick has a smile that shows he knows that something special happens when he is playing with these guys. They even do an extended acoustic version of "Alan Corday" which is amazing. I found "To The Stars" to be a good but not great Corea effort. This version is as amazing as anything that they have ever done. The band then takes a break.
As great as the first part of the concert is, the second part is unreal. The band performs music from their 80's/90's tours. "CTA" is a Jimmy Heath song that the CCEB have been covering for years and have played during these last reunion tours nightly. This song is unbelievable. Each member of the band takes a solo spot. It is during this set that Dave Weckl takes his drumming to a new level. "Eternal Child" is from the "Eye of the Beholder" Cd. Once again, the band takes a compostion that I found to be good on Cd and make it great live. The whole band improvises again, and Gambale, Patitucci, and Marienthal are all incredible. ("Not shabby" in the words of Corea) 'Got A Match?' has always been a concert favorite and this version is awe inspiring. Chick starts out by trading be-bop lines with the audience. Then a great be-bop/jazz incluenced melody is played and improvised over. The whole band's virtuosity is taken to new levels. Most notable is John Patitucci's bass work. He never stops his "walking" bass and his solo is incredible. I am glad that Chick was able to get him for this gig. Chick, Marienthal and Gambale all add their own solos and then Chick trades fours with Dave Weckl. There has always been a special level of interplay between these two. They team up, yet again, to inspire each other and the audience. There is a flurry of unison lines by all and then the song ends. This tune is JAZZ fusion and an acoustic version would be amazing. All of Chick's years studying be-bop and jazz come out on this masterpiece. The DVD price is paid in full by this song alone. The first encore is "Spain". "Spain" has been a Corea concert staple for decades. The intro, based on the adagio movement from the "concierto de aranjuez"(Rodrigo), is improvised by both Corea and Patitucci. There are definite classical overtones during this part of the song. During the actual song, Marienthal and Gambale provide solos that are short, well phrased and virtuostic. Weckl closes it out with his typical brilliance. "Blue Miles" is the closer and the band shows some bluesy influences in the main theme. All performers do their thing again and then the show is over.
To sum it up; This is the DVD that Fusion fans have been dreaming of and is now a reality. You will never buy a better Jazz/Rock/Fusion DVD based on Talent of the band. If you are a fan of any of these 5, then you'll want this immediately. As individuals, each member is an absolute revelation on his instrument and as a group this is a truly timeless perfomance. Buy it now.Chick Corea Elektric Band: Live at Montreux 2004 (2005) Overview

Kansas: There's Know Place Like Home (2009) ReviewOne word - EPIC. This DVD is amazing. Kansas is amazing. Ehart, Williams, Walsh, Greer and Ragsdale joined forces with a 50-piece symphony for an unforgettable performance. Let's get down to business! Steve Walsh has shocked me and delivered an absolutely knock-out performance. He hits every single note and his voice sounds fresh and vibrant. This was the best I've heard him since 1990. He especially shines on "Ghosts, "Nobody's Home," "The Other Side," and "Dust..". Ehart's drumming is so powerful and it's such a pleasure to watch his technique. Greer was fantastic on bass and even more so on the backing vocals. When he harmonizes with Walsh a great blend is created. Rich Williams was really on his game, especially on "The Wall" and "Carry On". But the guy who was the most impressive and fun to watch was Ragsdale. This guy has such flair and showmanship. As good as Robby Steinhardt was, Ragsdale is a flashier and more exciting player. If this wasn't enough we get guest appearances from Kerry Livgren and Steve Morse. The latter plays such a fiery lead on "Musicatto" it's hard to believe he's human. Livgren was exceptional as well and it was cool to see him playing a pipe organ during "The Wall". Of course there are 50 other stars of the show - the symphony. Their performance added such beauty to all the epic songs and meshed so well with the band. It was truly a match made in heaven. "Nobody's Home" was especially moving. The conductor was fun to watch too. Quite simply, this DVD captures Kansas on one of their very best nights. It should also be noted that the camera work and lighting are spectacular. Without question this DVD not only blows Live At The Whiskey and Device-Voice-Drum away, it obliterates them. The setlist is comprised from 10 different albums, so there's something here for Kansas fans of any era. No fan should be without this gem. Highly recommended.Kansas: There's Know Place Like Home (2009) Overview

Alice Cooper: Theatre Of Death - Live At Hammersmith 2009 (DVD / CD) (2010) ReviewI had planned to pass on the latest Alice Cooper DVD/CD combo, Theatre of Death: Live at Hammersmith 2009. After all, how many versions of "School's Out" and "18" does a guy need?
At least one more, as it turns out. Despite having two or three other video versions of Cooper shows in my home library, I added this latest set to my collection today, and I'm glad I did. Beautifully filmed, the recording captures a set list and theatrical show virtually identical to the one my wife and I saw just a few weeks back in Cleveland. Apparently, the Cooper tradition of only changing shows every other year still holds true.
Basically, this is Cooper doing what he does best: Serving as ringleader for a group of talented younger musicians and ripping through as many classic tunes from his repertoire as possible. Only a few songs from the last decade make the cut ("Dirty Diamonds," "Wicked Young Man" and "Vengeance Is Mine"), with a few more obscure hits ("Guilty" and "Nurse Rosetta," the last being one of my favorite Cooper tracks from the criminally under-appreciated 1979 album, "From the Inside") inserted for good measure.
This DVD is better than 2005's "Live at Montreux," largely because the theatrics are much stronger. The Hammersmith show offers super-sized syringes, a hanging, a guillotining, and a disturbing belt-sander-to-the-crotch sequence. Cooper's is in fine voice here, and damn if it doesn't get stronger past the halfway point when he serves up two ballads in a row "Only Women Bleed" and "I Never Cry."
Band members Damon Johnson and Keri Kelli (guitars), Chuck Garric (bass) and Jimmy DeGrasso (drums) offer a tight set. Garric is especially effective when he takes over lead vocal duties on "I Love the Dead," giving Cooper a chance to prep for the one-two-three punch of the finale, "No More Mr. Nice Guy," "Under My Wheels," and "School's Out."
Weak points? Well, opening and closing with "School's Out" is overkill, even for such a seminal anthem, and I would love to hear Cooper give some of the newer songs from his oeuvre a chance live. With so many classics to choose from, it's a tough decision to scratch an old standby in favor of something newer, but I wish the ratio of old to new wasn't so skewed.
I'm glad I dropped sixteen dollars on this DVD. Doubtless, I'll give it at least one more play before Halloween. If you're into vintage hard rock with a theatrical flair, this one is practically nirvana.
Alice Cooper: Theatre Of Death - Live At Hammersmith 2009 (DVD / CD) (2010) OverviewThe godfather of shock-rock Alice Cooper completed his 2009 Theatre of Death World Tour by filming the final show at London's legendary Hammersmith Apollo. The concert features many of Cooper's massive hits including 'School's Out,' 'I'm Eighteen' and 'Poison,' 'Alice Cooper's Theatre Of Death' is a very different show than anyone has ever seen before. Always expect the unexpected from the unpredictable Alice Cooper... Fans of the ultimate Rock 'n' Roll showman won't be disappointed as Alice is subjected to guillotines, gallows and more on his way to being 'killed' four times!DVD track-listing (91 mins):1. Guns N' Roses - Use Your Illusion II (World Tour 1992 in Tokyo) (1992) ReviewThis is the best music video I have ever seen. It has everything! Fantastic hardout solos, both in the guitar and drum catorgory. Slash adds his own intros to both Knockin' on Heavens Door and Paradise City before he hooks into the song itself. Other good songs include Estranged and Sweet Child o' Mine....infact it has all the legend songs. You aren't a pure Guns n' Roses fan unless you have this video. My best bit is when Slash puts on his tophat and sprints around of stage infront of the crowd...he knows how to get the crowd going!Guns N' Roses - Use Your Illusion II (World Tour 1992 in Tokyo) (1992) OverviewItem Name: Guns N' Roses - Use Your Illusion II (World Tour 1992 in Tokyo); Studio:Geffen Records
