Andrea Bocelli - Vivere - Live In Tuscany ReviewI upgraded from the standard DVD to Blu-ray to get the full effect of this concert. The detail is amazing and the lighting seems even more beautiful than I remember. What an outstanding concert with lots of wonderful guests! I loved the country location at dusk as the sun goes down over the Tuscan hills to reveal a spectacular evening sky.
The sound quality is awesome for this gorgeous collection of music. I don't understand why the Blu-ray version is still so hard to get. Really happy I got mine when I did!Andrea Bocelli - Vivere - Live In Tuscany Overview

The Antichrist: Original Soundtrack Music From The Film ReviewThe cover and Amazon's clumsy title gives the impression that this score is "L'anticristo" alone, while in fact it's coupled with the score "Sepolta viva"(Woman buried alive-from 1973) which takes up 13 of the tracks, while "L'anticristo"(The antichrist-from 1974) only consists of 2. These last 2 tracks are uninteresting to say the least, while the first score is the real gem. Overall I would describe it as 18. century baroque music, not pastiche, but instead with a recognizable Morricone style similar to his other romantic '70 scores. The main theme "Romanza a Cristina" is terrific. It's repeated 3 other times on the album with different orchestration each time, but with no apparent variation apart from that. Nearly all other tracks on this album introduces a new beautiful and romantic melody, and is a great listen all the way through. "La caccia" is a personal favorite. My italian is a bit rusty, but I think the translation is "The hunt", and the sound of it certainly fits such an event. Start off with horn fanfares, strings take over the theme and it developes into an exciting piece of music. A trumpet, harpsichord and more are added, until finally it ends similar to how it started with horn fanfares, now slowing down and fading away, truly amazing! If you like his other incredible scores for "La califfa" and "Questa specie d'amore", you will love this one as well(and vice versa). Well, I'm sure you will no matter what. Enjoy! The Antichrist: Original Soundtrack Music From The Film Overview

Animalia: Welcome to the Kingdom (2009) ReviewAlex and Zoe discover a secret passageway in the public library that leads to a strange and wonderful land. Here all the inhabitants are fully articulate animals who walk upright, wear clothing and understand advanced technology. They are amused at the children's idea that humans are a more evolved species. Welcome to Animalia!
"The Core" is the key to Animalia, a big glowing mass located in the library at the center of the city. When the Core is healthy, there is positive communication and the animals co-exist peacefully. Unfortunately, the Core has cracked, which is causing the citizens to act like ... animals! Alex and Zoe must find the elements necessary to repair the Core and restore peace to Animalia.
There is a strong storyline, which means viewers will eagerly anticipate each episode as the tale unfolds and the action mounts. With the Core in disrepair, the animals are losing their refined personalities, submitting to their instincts instead. For Alex and Zoe, this means Animalia is becoming a dangerous place if they choose to remain.
These videos are absolutely spellbinding. The characters are nicely developed and the illustrations are bright and interesting. Best of all, the animals are hilarious! Each has a wonderfully quirky personality that is not dumbed down for younger children. They are attributed specific accents and mannerisms that had us laughing straight through. We loved every minute of this series!
It should be noted that these videos are intended for children ages 6 - 9, and could be a bit scary for younger children.Animalia: Welcome to the Kingdom (2009) Overview

Ac/Dc - No Bull Live Plaza De Toros - The Director's Cut - IMPORT (1996) ReviewThe Good
No Bull was originally released in 1996 for the home video market. The director David Mallet always thought that the release was too rushed, and ultimately was not the best result possible for the release. In 2008 the film has been completely restored in HD and the audio remixed in both stereo and 5.1 surround sound.
No Bull showcases AC/DC on their Ballbreaker tour. The venue for the event is the Plaza De Toros De Las Ventas bullfighting arena in Madrid, Spain. Now that title makes sense, huh? One of the greater aspects of this performance is that AC/DC knows how to put on a show. A show is much more than music. Although it has been virtually abandoned by current artists, a lot of AC/DC's show is visual as well as auditory. That makes for one hell of a performance.
The group kicks things off surprisingly with "Back in Black." Before they hit the stage, there's a hugh wrecking ball that destroys an old building that consumes the stage. After the top level is demolished, the group enters from what's left of the building. From their the group fires off some of their biggest and fan favorite tracks.
Songs include, "Thunderstruck," "Girls Got Rhythm," "Hard As A Rock," "Shoot to Thrill," "Hells Bells," "The Jack," "Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution," "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap," "You Shook Me All Night Long," "Whole Lotta Rosie," "T.N.T," "Highway to Hell," "For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)," plus six more.
You might even find a few undiscovered tracks along the way, as "Hail Caesar" and "Boogie Man" have become two of my new favorites. The crowd is huge and into every track. The energy level starts high and never falters. Visual highlights include the ominous bell from "Hells Bells," a hugh inflatable "Rosie," and the wrecking ball summonsing Angus from the depths of hell on "Highway to Hell."
There are a handful of bonus features which are cool, but you could have really lived without them. The show eclipses anything offered as a bonus. Live performances of "Cover You in Oil" (another new favorite of mine) from Sweden and "Down Payment Blues from Florida are included as bonuses. As well as alternate camera footage from the Spain show, titled "Angus-Cam."
The Bad
Let's face it, "Ballbreaker" wasn't exactly one of AC/DC's best efforts.
The Verdict
Has there ever been a bad AC/DC performance? I think not! No Bull is a perfect representation of what the group has to offer.Ac/Dc - No Bull Live Plaza De Toros - The Director's Cut - IMPORT (1996) Overview

Ray Charles Live - In Concert with the Edmonton Symphony (1981) ReviewAfter reading the reviews and looking at the song list, I had high hopes for this disc. The picture quality was good and Ray's energy as he bounced onto the staged was also promising. However, from the very first song, the recording is a disappointment. In the first song, the audio mix is so far off that you can't even hear his piano. This is eventually corrected, but throughout the performance we all felt that it was a bit hollow - lots of surface flash, but none of the true depth of soul for which Ray Charles is legendary.Ray Charles Live - In Concert with the Edmonton Symphony (1981) OverviewThis DVD was recorded on January 27, 1981 in Edmonton, Alberta at Jubilee Auditorium. National Geographic: Atmospheres - Earth, Air and Water (2008) ReviewFirst off, I NEVER write reviews, but felt I needed to in this case. This blu-ray is so bad I literally took a look at the disc to make sure I wasn't sent the DVD version. The content I rate 3 stars given my family enjoyed it (including my 3 year old) but I have DVDs that look better upconverted than this film. When the best part of the HD experience is the dolby digital track (which is standard on DVDs) you know it's a stinker. The show looks so compressed and blurry its embarrassing to be considered hi-def. It wasn't even worth the $10 I paid for it during high definition week. Which I'm now officially convinced was 'clean out the garage and have a hi-def sale' week.
Since it looks like a dvd, and sounds like a DVD....I'm going to say you are getting a DVD in blu-ray packaging. If anyone is wondering, I have over 150 blu-rays, and I'm going to say this is the worst one I own.
The production value is horrible, at about the 30 minute mark, it pauses for about 3 seconds, I was thinking....is it over? Maybe it IS a dvd and I'm experiencing a layer change? It then goes into the next segment. It's all a little cheesy but relaxing. They could have done so much more with it though.
Bottom-line, save your money or buy the DVD version.National Geographic: Atmospheres - Earth, Air and Water (2008) Overview

A View From Space With Heavenly Music ReviewBuyer beware. I expected an hour of HD images from space. Instead, a viewer gets a blast off sequence and a 10-15-minute loop of images from space repeated four times. I also wanted "a view from space"--not long, hand-held shots of the shuttle's empty cargo bay with a shaky moon in the background. Also, there are distracting blobs, spots, and smears on the camera lens and on the viewing portals. The fourth time you watch the Sahara (or whatever desert it is) through what looks a big bug splat on a windshield, one really wishes that the video was a rental instead of a purchase.A View From Space With Heavenly Music OverviewEight hours of music all on one Blu-Ray High Definition disc, . . . the greatest classical music ever recorded, in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound, provides the heavenly soundtrack to this spectacular view of our planet captured in stunning High Definition clarity by the international crew of the space shuttle Endeavour. Mozart: Don Giovanni - Royal Opera House (2008) ReviewThis is the most completely satisfying video production of Don Giovanni I have encountered to date. Allow me first to assuage concerns regarding the sound on this Blu-Ray disc -- succinctly put, the LPCM 5.1 sound is impeccable. The singing, acting, conducting, design, stage direction, and video direction converge ideally with each other to create a jewel of operatic performance. The result is an as near perfect production of Don Giovanni as I have ever seen (N.B. The search for such a well-balanced production of Don Giovanni, either in live performance in opera houses around the world or in video productions from film to Beta to VHS to Laserdisc to DVD, has been the "Holy Grail" of my opera enjoyment for the past thirty years. I believe I have found it.) I am heartened to think that this production on Blu-Ray may provide newcomers to Mozart and opera in general with an elegant and superb introduction to both the composer and the medium.Mozart: Don Giovanni - Royal Opera House (2008) OverviewMOZART:DON GIOVANNI - Blu-Ray Movie

Legends of Jazz: Showcase (2006) ReviewI found out about this 2-disk set while watching the "Male Vocalists" episode of the new PBS television series "Legends of Jazz," and after buying it, I find I am really looking forward to seeing all the rest of the actual half-hour TV shows from which these 13 tracks and clips are taken. As for this set, let me say first that the audio and video quality are simply outstanding, among the best I have ever heard, in fact, (which is not surprising considering that the TV series is shot in HDTV and features really outstanding Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround sound.) Next, as for the performances themselves, they really shine and there is something here for everyone - the set covers everything from latin jazz to be-bop, Brazilian jazz, fusion-type jazz, vocal jazz, and even throws in a bit of the blues, with a great duet by Robert Cray and Keb' Mo'. A really nice mix of artists, older and younger, and a pretty good value for money, considering that you get both a CD and a DVD packaged together in the box. I highly recommend this!Legends of Jazz: Showcase (2006) Overview

The Shadows: The Final Tour (2010) ReviewThis is the blu-ray version of the outstanding Shadows 2004 concert recorded in Cardiff, UK. Contents are the same as the standard DVD. The menu system is a different, specifically there are more song titles displayed per screen than the original.
If you have a blu-ray player, I have a pioneer elite BDP-23FD. Picture quality is fantastic (even the standard DVD looks great on this player) and you can see more of whatever was being filmed.
I'd have given this DVD 10 stars, if possible. The performance is outstanding. If you've never heard The Shadows live, here's your chance.
I have only a standard stereo system, but the sound quality (just like the standard DVD) is great.
I'm now awaiting the blu-ray release of the Cliff/Shads Final Reunion DVD...hopefully coming soon. The Shadows: The Final Tour (2010) Overview

Gary Moore & Friends: One Night in Dublin - A Tribute to Phil Lynott (2009) ReviewAs with almost everything that Gary Moore releases, this DVD has great moments, strange decisions and bad moments. Let's check them:
1) Good factors: sound quality is excellent. Crisp, loud and clear. Brian Downey is playing very steady, as strong a drummer as ever. Gary is playing like hell. Man, this guy is s master of the six-strings. Scott Gorham: the Black Rose instrumental part is breathtaking. The guy played with conviction and hit every note right, enjoying the moment.
2) Strange: Gary beginning the show with a solo tune. Maybe he just wanted to warm up the audience... Also, maybe because the concert was an homage to Lynott, the bass player was extremely low profile, even vclearly being clearly professional and a great player. Not bringing Sykes was weird.
3) Bad moments: Brian Robertson. It hurted me to see the guy barely being capable of playing, It was clear he was going through the motions. An embarassing moment.
Gary singing at the top of his lungs. Subtlety is not a virtue of him... He sings the songs in a harsh and "brutal" manner, totally devoid of any of the nuances used by Lynott. This is annoying at sometimes.
In genereal, however, this ia a very worth purchase.Gary Moore & Friends: One Night in Dublin - A Tribute to Phil Lynott (2009) Overview

The Who: The Kids Are Alright (2010) ReviewAfter having seen several other major DVD opportunities get squandered (The Beatles's HARD DAYS NIGHT leaps to mind), it is an utter delight to watch/listen to this DVD. It is great on several levels: the original film was one of the best collections of live performances in the history of rock, the reissue has dramatically improved the look and sound of the film, and the Special Edition extra disc includes some truly wonderful features. This ought to be the model for all future reissues, such as when/if they reissue the Rolling Stones's TWENTY-FIVE BY FIVE.
Only a couple of years ago I was trying to explain to my daughter that in the sixties and seventies, the Who were full-fledged members of the rock Pantheon, as revolutionary and crucial as the Stones, the Beatles, or Led Zeppelin. For some reason, they went into a bit of a decline in the general musical consciousness (I found kids my daughter's age might not know of them at all, whereas they knew the other aforementioned bands quite well). Thanks to some timely re-released and a tragic tour that saw the death of John Entwhistle, their star truly seems to be on the ascendant again. This album is crucial for proving what all of us at the time knew: the Who was without question one of the very greatest live bands of all time.
The Who was an amazing band, full of paradoxes. Roger Daltrey was one of the great front men in the history of rock, and Pete Townshend a crack songwriter and arguably the most entertaining to watch guitarist of all time. Yet, the lead instruments in the band, almost unique in rock, were Keith Moon and his maniacally abused drum kit and John Entwhistle's bass, both of them among the top two or three of all time on their instruments, if not the best. They were a great rhythm section, but they jointly tended to take over the songs musically, unlike Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman for the Stones, who were content to stay rock solid in the background. Live, they were amazing, with Daltrey marching in place, swinging the mike around like David about to use his sling against Goliath; Pete Townshend dancing disjointedly around while doing his famous helicopter chording of the guitar; Keith Moon playing as if he were on eight different drugs, tossing his drumsticks ten and twenty feet in the air; and amid it all, like the quiet in the eye of the hurricane, John Entwhistle standing stock still, motionless except for his hands moving up and down his bass, playing the instrument better than anyone else ever had, or perhaps has since.
The film begins with a bang, with a famous appearance on The Smothers Brothers Show (an awesome show because it was so amazingly subversive, with Tom and Dick acting like total squares, but in reality leftists who loved exposing the public to acts like Lenny Bruce and Mort Sahl, and bands like The Who and Cream). Unlike Ed Sullivan, Tom and Dick truly loved these bands, and the opening number/skit, a rollicking version of "My Generation" (with Roger Daltrey suffering so badly from a faux upper-induced stammer that was a badge of their identification with the amphetamine-crazed Mods that one isn't certain he is going to be able to finish each line). Each number brings new revelations or refreshes old memories. For instance, in "I Can't Explain" from SHINDIG! Keith Moon is sporting a T-shirt with a bull's eye on it, a full decade before Richard Hell would achieve notoriety in New York for wearing one when he was still with Television.
The numbers included in the film are both wide-ranging and representative. I suppose any Who fan will find many of their own favorites missing, but no one can complain that the numbers focus too much on one phase of their career. The selections are extraordinarily well balanced. One of the more poignant features is the fact that the performance of "Won't Get Fooled Again," which was performed specifically for the film so that they could have one really good performance on film of one of their most famous numbers, was the last time the Who ever performed in their original line up; Keith Moon would die only three months later.
The extras disc is truly worth having, with a feature on the restoration of the movie, and nice items like a tour of the Who's London, an interview with Roger Daltrey, and, my favorite bit, interesting versions of "Baba O'Riley" and "Won't Get Fooled Again," that features only John Entwhistle's bass and visuals. There is no question about it: the guy could play bass.
All in all, one is going to come across very few music DVDs quite this good. I highly recommend it.The Who: The Kids Are Alright (2010) OverviewStudio: Uni Dist Corp (music)Release Date: 03/02/2010

Winehouse, Amy - I Told You I Was Trouble Live In London (2007) ReviewThis certainly is an accurate capturing of Amy Winehouse in concert. She's a bit tipsy, her between songs banter with the crowd is all at once funny, charming and rambling. She seems to lose her train of thought a time or two, but when she sings, there is no denying the magic and power of her voice. Her wonderful backing band does a stellar job throughout and the home turf of London makes for a very appreciative and supportive crowd.
I thouroughly enjoyed the hour long documentary "I Told You I Was Trouble." Some great behind the scenes footage of her younger days, never before seen performances--even a very early showcase inside her record company's offices. If you are a fan of Miss Amy, you will greatly enjoy this DVD. Indeed, the Blu-ray presentation is the ideal way to enjoy the show, as it realizes the true enhanced resolution captured by the many high definition cameras in Sunrise, Florida's BankAtlantic Center on that special night in October 2006. Seeing the amazing concert in its entirety relives the memorable evening my wife and I shared with Barbra in Atlanta only a week later and promises to be a wondrous experience for first-timers. Barbra's complete program is here, including her humor-filled Q&A with the audience via note cards, shout-outs, and a surprise short version of "Stoney End." The George Bush comedy sketch is excluded but not missed, while the bonus features include Barbra's extraordinarily delicate "Nobody's Heart (Belongs To Me)" backed only by piano, "When The Sun Comes Out" (an early `60s concert number), and "The Woman In The Moon" filmed with regular lighting and standard definition at L.A.'s Staples Center at the end of the tour. Barbra delivers an inspiring introduction to the song and to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Senator Barbara Boxer in the audience. Il Divo's "My Way" appears right before "Come Rain Or Come Shine," with their other two songs viewable among the bonus features. "The People Behind The Scenes" is a neat 6-minute segment with comments about Barbra from manager Marty Erlichman ("I still get goosebumps"), Jay Landers ("She discovered new meaning in songs she sang when she was younger"), director Gary Smith ("This is forever and should be"), Richard Jay Alexander, and conductor-arranger Bill Ross. Marge Tabankin, The Streisand Foundation's executive director, speaks for 10 enlightening minutes mainly about Barbra.
While we have enjoyed the Live In Concert 2006 CD for two years, the concert on video, particularly in full 1080p HD only available on Blu-ray, really brings you front and center, and Barbra's musical performances are truly compelling. "Funny Girl," sung for the first time in 40 years, is almost all in close-up and sounds as poignant as ever. Another highlight, although often performed, is "The Way We Were" with a gliding camera move from one side of Barbra to the other. Throughout the concert, the multiple camera work is flawless and flowing, with graceful editing, harkening back to classic television and concert videos with long-lasting shots that allow us to savor each lyric instead of today's quick-cutting style. "Unusual Way" is definitely one of the highlights, as one camera pulls in and pushes out and another captures Barbra's figure from the sides and her contented smile at the song's conclusion. "Don't Rain On My Parade (reprise)" is a perfect first encore, a sheer delight and bare-footed triumph. For the final encore, "Smile," Barbra and the audience focus attention on Samantha, her darling white poodle/bichon, whose great affection for Barbra is also evident elsewhere in the program. Barbra's final performance of the evening is sublime and further conveys a renewed emotional connection with her adoring audience.Barbra Streisand: Live in Concert 2006 Overview

The Pretenders - Live in London ReviewI'm not only owner of this Blu-Ray but the CD/normal DVD combo and its a great show , played with passion and filmed in a very artistic and dramatic way.....it has edge and power and Chrissie is still rockin as hard as ever and sounding fabulous!!! What more could a fan want? Chrissie is all attitude and her vocals are as formidable as ever and her new band is crackin.
For any band with as long a track record there will of course be songs left off and a few newer ones obliged to toss in to keep things current but those would be picky complaints. I don't want to get into comparing this to the Loose in LA show which is also a HD filmed event featuring the wonderful Adam Seymour you really should own both!
25 songs plus a funny extra bit of footage...and a sort of retro feel to the film..I just love it!
I was asked for the set list...

Journey: Live in Manila ReviewFirst of here are the blu ray specs:
Video: BD50, 1080i(fine w/ me), High Definition Widescreen aspect ratio of 1.78:1
(this ratio eliminated the black bars on mine which is great)
Audio: DTS-HD Master Audio, Dolby Digital 5.1, or LPCM Stereo.
All Region disc so it'll play on any blu ray player on earth.
Running Time: 2:25:25
I just watch this concert in blu ray and it was Excellent. Video quality was ultra sharp. Why? filming of this concert was done utilizing the 4k High Definition camera by Oakley called RED and will be the future industry standard(research and you'll know Ultra High Definition). My impressions on the concert: variety of camera movement like panning, zooming, and overall focus variety on stage/band members/audience coverage was done professionally. Audio is just the best. Song selections are plenty from the classic hits to the latest album Revelations (26 total). Minor gripes I can say is that no bonus materials and very expensive for a blu ray. However, as an avid Journey and Arnel Pineda fan, I can't help but swallow the pride of ownership as this blu ray can't be found anywhere else so far but amazon. I've been collecting many concert blu rays already and this is one of the best. So if you like rock music video, into concert blu rays, a Journey Fan, or simply a "pinoy" my kababayans....then this blu ray is a MUST have in your collection.Journey: Live in Manila Overview

k.d. lang: Live in London With the BBC Concert Orchestra (2008) ReviewDTS-HD master audio is spacious with tight, deep bass and plenty of air between the instruments. Gigantic sound stage, especially when string section joins in. Vocal recording is dry with incredible nuance. You could literally hear her whisper above the full band & orchestra. Demo disc quality. Video is a little soft compared to, say, a nature documentary, but is basically crystal clear. Performance features stunning vocals & a very talented band. You probably either hate or love KD Lang but even home theater enthusiasts who are not into her music should consider owning this disc. This is a new standard for blu-ray concerts.k.d. lang: Live in London With the BBC Concert Orchestra (2008) Overview
