Joe Satriani: Live in Paris - I Just Wanna Rock (2010) ReviewI have to begin by saying I have been a Joe Satriani fan for over 20 years. I've seen him multiple times in concert, own his entire collection on CD, all the DVDs, etc. I am a huge fan. Let's face it though, the reason virtually any (all) Satriani fans buy his DVDs is to watch the man play guitar. I never grow tired of watching his skill at playing and the music he makes; in a word, amazing.
Having said that, this DVD is virtually unwatchable. The editing is horrible in that it jumps and cuts all over the place. You never have an opportunity to sit and watch Joe play. The effects are over-the-top and completely ruin the DVD for me. It's as though his editor just learned how to use Adobe After Effects and thought it would be uber cool to use every effect in the software over and over again. Virtually every second has some stupid effect ruining the video. There are sunbursts coming off Joe's head and an almost constant halo effect around him. I cannot sit and watch this video for more than 90 seconds before feeling motion sick. It took me multiple attempts to get through the entire video and this comes from someone who has watched the 'Live in San Francisco' DVD hundreds of times. As an example, I was very excited about "Time Machine" being on this DVD since it has long been a favorite of mine and Joe rarely, if ever, plays that song live. On the DVD, during that song, Joe appears to be having an out-of-body experience. I don't even know how best to describe it, it is off the charts weird and totally unnecessary.
Maybe that is the best way to describe this DVD, it's unnecessary. You never get an opportunity to watch Joe play, at least not without 50+ effects, per song, ruining the experience. I highly recommend the CD since the concert itself sounds fantastic, but pass on the DVD.Joe Satriani: Live in Paris - I Just Wanna Rock (2010) Overview

Jimi Hendrix: Blue Wild Angel - Live at the Isle of Wight (1971) ReviewAs far as film accounts of Jimi Hendrix go, this is absoluetly the best from every conceivable perspective. Camera work is terrific: none of the poor lighting that mars Berkley or Band of Gypsies, none of the dental examination that comprises all but a few minutes of Woodstock. The opening sequences are informative. Mitch Mitchell and Billy Cox give a very solid account of how truly beyond pop stars they had become by that point, heading towards a jazz-blues fusion that only Miles Davis and John McLaughlin would be able to assume with any respectability.
It is very clear from backstage chatter thru the comments of his tour manager and band mates that Hendrix was not keen on performing at this concert and had begun to feel that he was, in fact, beyond rock and its infantile approach to artists. That said, he had enormous respect for the people who had paid money to see him and so tore into this concert with enormous brio. His fingerwork is among his most dazzling. The camera crew captures three men feeding off each other with visual ques that also point to how sober, clean and focused Jimi was by this time. He and Mitchell were as in sync with each other as Coltrane and Elvin Jones. Cox has been unfairly glossed over in music and this film and soundtrack illustrate that he was the best bass player for the best guitarist of all time.
If you are a fan, pick this up. If you are curious, I'd suggest this as theplace to start. Many thanks to the Hendrix family for releasing an incendiary performance. In a matter of weeks, Jimi would be dead. You'd never guess it from here: one listen to Voodoo Chile would convince you.
I might also add that this DVD is far superior to the CD, whose sequencing made no sense and gives the listener the impression that Hendrix wants to get out as soon as possible. For the future: stick with Jimi's sequencing. He knew what he was about, and this DVD proves it.Jimi Hendrix: Blue Wild Angel - Live at the Isle of Wight (1971) Overview1 Isle Of Wight Document... 2 Band Introduction 3 Band Introduction 4 God Save The Queen 5 God Save The Queen 6 Sgt. Paul Gilbert: Get Out of My Yard (2007) Review3 words...BUY...THIS...DVD!!! Over 2 hours of the most intense shred you've ever seen in your life! Every song, yes, EVERY song from the Get Out of My Yard (GOMY) album is covered highlighting the main sections of each song. Only downside is there's no on-screen tab and no tab booklet included, but the closeups on Paul's fingers are great and you should have no trouble following along. Awesome live performances of some songs from GOMY after the lesson section and even technique is covered (hammer-ons/pull-offs, arpeggios, and--my favorite--alternate picking). So, I say again, buy this DVD. You won't regret it!!!Paul Gilbert: Get Out of My Yard (2007) Overview

Crest of a Wave: The Best of Rory Gallagher Review
Another Rory Gallagher collection and four stars simply because the material is so good and is a fair representation of his solo career covering both the acoustic and heavy blues/rock side of Rory.
Long-time fans will not need this collection which will appeal to completists and those curious or unfamiliar with Gallagher's body of work.
All the tracks are staples but the stand-outs include; A Million Miles Away, Crest of a Wave, Moonchild, Tattoo'd Lady, Walk On Hot Coals and They Don't Make Them Like You Anymore.
This is a good collection but there are others out there which best this one. Check out BIG GUNS - THE VERY BEST OF RORY GALLAGHER which IS career spanning as it takes in TASTE and his solo career and packs more punch than this latest offering.

Where the Wild Things Are (2009) ReviewI know others will go deep with analysis of this product, so I will just state what I think is the most important element. This show seems to have been edited by someone who is not only aware of this type of music, but also a fan. I cannot handle nonstop 2 second cuts to every camera view that I could care less about. The days of the frantic MTV style video presentation are OVER. This DVD is perfect in that aspect, when Steve is going for the "part", you WILL get to see it. And there is also just the right amount of effects and movement to keep it interesting & fresh. Any musician who actually cares about the music, should pay attention to "Where the Wild Things Are" and use this as a reference point for any Producer or Director who will be in charge of presenting an artists true vision in the arena of concert recording. Jimi Hendrix: Live at Monterey (2007) ReviewJimi Hendrix's closing set at the Monterey Pop Festival (following the Who's destruction of their own instruments) was only 40 minutes long - but what an impressive 40 minutes! Will anyone who has seen the footage of him burning his guitar on stage (shown on the cover of this DVD) every forget that image?
This reasonably priced DVD from Experience Hendrix (managed by Jimi's sister Janie) contains those 40 minutes and so much more. Guitar aficionados will appreciate the option to see different camera angles (my DVD player shows the angle image throughout so it wasn't important to me). Archivist types will enjoy the inclusion of the earliest existing footage of the Hendrix band playing in a small club in 1967. The new documentary "American Landing" has some fascinating interviews with those involved and is useful in explaining Hendrix's popularity to the next generation of fans.
Another bonus which I found as a "hidden gem" is "Music Love and Flowers" a nice mini documentary on the Monterey Pop Festival itself. Sure the complete festival is out there on video on D.A. Pennebaker's film, but this short extra gives the background and contains new interviews with Lou Adler and John Phillips who basically organized it. This makes this package of interest even to fringe Hendrix fans.
If Jimi was alive now he'd be eligible for Medicare this week! Can he have been gone so long and died so young (27!)?
If this isn't in every Hendrix collector's DVD collection, I don't know why not.

Iron Man 2 (CD/DVD) ReviewIf you are not familiar with all the songs by AC/DC, here's what albums they were featured on:
1. Shoot to Thrill (From "Back in Black")
2. Rock 'N' Roll Damnation (from "Powerage")
3. Guns for Hire (from "Flick Of The Switch")
4. Cold Hearted Man (from "Backtracks")
5. Back in Black (from "Back in Black")
6. Thunderstruck (from "The Razor's Edge")
7. If You Want Blood (You've Got It) (from "Highway To Hell")
8. Evil Walks (from "For Those About To Rock")
9. T.N.T. (from "High Voltage")
10. Hell Ain't a Bad Place to Be (from "Let There Be Rock")
11. Have a Drink on Me (from "Back in Black")
12. The Razor's Edge (from "The Razor's Edge")
13. Let There Be Rock (from "Let There Be Rock")
14. War Machine (from "Black Ice")
15. Highway to Hell(from "Highway to Hell")
If you keeping count that's 6 cuts for Bon Scott and 9 for Brian Johnson.
3 tracks from "Back in Black" and 2 from "The Razor's Edge, "Highway To Hell" & "Let There Be Rock".
Studio Albums with no tracks represented: "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap",'74 Jailbreak", "Fly on The Wall","Blow Up Your Video", "Ballbreaker", & "Stiff Upper Lip".
At least this soundtrack covers a broader spectrum than their last soundtrack offering, "Maximum Overdrive" which featured 2 tracks from "Back in Black", 2 from "Fly on The Wall", 1 each from "Dirty Deeds" & "For Those About to Rock", plus 2 new instrumentals and the lone new track, "Who Made Who". At least the two soundtracks didn't copy songs, so that's a good thing.
The only thing I was hoping for was at least one new track, but no luck. ENJOY!Iron Man 2 (CD/DVD) Overview

It Might Get Loud (2009) ReviewCaught this film yesterday and all I can say is wow. If you like music, guitars or any combination of the two catch this one on the big screen. Then you can easily decide if you need to add this dvd to your music archives. The progression of stories and how they are told is excellent, as well as the music presented. [...]
I came here yesterday after getting home from the matinee to see if there might be a "soundtrack" available to accompany this movie. There's probably enough material here (Link Wray, Son House etc.) to make a sweet multi-disc collection. It may seem like an odd combination of guitar players, but all three are well represented and there are too many highlights to mention. Seeing these guys playing bottleneck slide guitar together on "In My Time Of Dying" is worth the price of admission by itself. Seeing this film was a joyful experience for me and my heart does a little happy dance just thinking about it.It Might Get Loud (2009) OverviewA documentary on the electric guitar from the point of view of three significant rock musicians: The Edge, Jimmy Page, and Jack White.
