Humble Pie - The Life and Times of Steve Marriott ReviewI finally got my copy of The Life and Times of Steve Marriott and it's everything I hoped it would be and more. It is just so nice to finally have something out there to help us remember this great artist by. Up until now there has been nothing but the music and my memories, and I hope lots of people see this and become fans like me. The music is great, of course, and I think overall the tracks selected are a good mix of Steve's vast catalogue of material. It was such a treat to see that great old B&W Small Faces stuff. I was just 12 years old when all that British Mod stuff was happening, but I remember it well. There are a couple of virtually un-interrupted Small Faces performances, as well as a nervous young Steve meeting a fan. Watch as he puts his pick in his mouth to shake her hand and then takes it out to talk! There are a couple of complete songs performed from the early Humble Pie days which was an unexpected treat. You can really see the boys stretching their creative wings with all the acoustic stuff. Steve was more in the background at this time as he wanted to have everyone in the band share the spotlight, but it's hard not to watch him, and that voice...ahh that voice! His harp playing is fabulous. We quickly move on to the "Rockin' the Fillmore" period (no mention of Rock On album at all) and virtually no concert footage from this period until we get to a very nice surprise, a live version of "I Don't Need No Doctor" with Clem Clemson that just smokes! Despite the poor sound quality, it captures the live energy this band had which was unequaled. This is how I will always remember Steve and the Pie. From there the story jumps right along to Smokin' and Eat It, with very little concert footage (sadly) except a snippit of Steve and the band with the Blackberries singing a version of "Black Coffee" that is different from the record. I wanted more! Then we zip along to the breakup of the band. No mention of Thunderbox or Street Rats (not that the latter is really worth mentioning, but still...) and then on to the 2nd version of Small Faces and Humble Pie. Again, not really note-worthy stuff, but very little of Steve's later work in the '90s, and I'm sure there is some video of that period. Oh well. To sum up, you get a lot of great early stuff, both with Small Faces and Humble Pie, some gems from the heyday of Humble Pie, and not much at all of the later years. It seemed like it all ended too quickly! The interviews and comments by those folks lucky enough to know Steve were great. Jerry Shirley was a kick, and Peter Frampton and the rest were fun to listen to. I wish there was just a single interview with Steve, to hear him talk would have been nice. I also remember seeing Humble Pie on TV back in the '70s on shows like "In Concert" and "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert" (remember those?) and it would have been cool to have some of that footage as well. All in all, a great video/DVD to have for your library about one of rock music's all time great perfomers, and leaves you wanting more.Humble Pie - The Life and Times of Steve Marriott Overview

Gary Puckett and the Union Gap (2005) ReviewI have always been a Gary Puckett fan, and was very excited to learn that a current DVD was available in which he performed several of his big hits. But I do have to say that I held off purchasing it because of some of the negative reviews I read here. But while I have tremendous respect for the reviewers who took the time to share their opinions, reviews and assessments can often be quite subjective, and what someone else thinks may differ significantly from what I think -- in either direction. So I bought the DVD, and I'm very glad that I did. I really enjoyed it, and thought the performance was very good. It was also nice to watch the "back stage" interview, which gave me a new insight on and appreciation of Gary which I had not had from just listening to records (which I still have), cassettes (ditto), and CDs. I guess my take on this is the same as my take on the Gary Lewis and the Playboys DVD which I bought at the same time, and other DVDs like the various Petula Clark ones I have purchased, all of which I have enjoyed -- I consider it a real treat that these legends continue performing and that through the DVDs I have the chance to see them when they do not happen to be performing in my neck of the woods. Do they sound like they did 40 years ago? That would be impossible (as I have proven on my own recent CDs - see www.lawtunes.com). But these current performances and interpretations are a piece of music history and having them available to us is a gift which I for one very much appreciate.Gary Puckett and the Union Gap (2005) Overview

Fun With the Fab Four (2000) ReviewWhen my friend brought her copy of "Fun with the Fab Four" over to my house today, I thought it looked stupid. The name does make it sound as though it will be, but when she told me it was not, I agreed to watch it. Especially when I found out the Midsummer Nights Dream sketch was in it, something I had been dyeing to see ever since I first saw a picture of John in those pigtails. Anyway, as the other reviewers have said, if you'r not much of a beatles fan, stear clear. This is really only for those leaning toward obsessive. If you are like me, (I bought Ringo a sixty-fourth birthday present) this dvd is a wonder beyond your wildest dreams. The interviews are interesting and almost constantly hilareous, and the Midsummer Nights Dream sketch is worth it all on its own. That sketch is quite possibly the funniest thing I have ever seen. ("I'm the man on the moon, this is my thorn branch, and this doggie woggie here is my dog!" ...priceless) The part from Japanese television in which the picture didn't match the sound was confusing (Ringo's mouth is moving, but John's voice is coming out!), but apart from that, I think it is one of my favorite Beatles DVDs, and I own a good amount (anthology, unauthorized, A hard days night, help, magical mystery tour, and soon Let it Be, hopefully), all of which I hold in very high regard. I plan to buy Fun with the Fab Four as soon as possible, and at the price it has, there is no reason to pass it up! Its going for a penny in the used section! oh, and if anyone knows where to get George Harrison's pirate song sketch from Eric Idle's television program, Id be much obliged. thanks!Fun With the Fab Four (2000) Overview

The '60s Rock Experience Live (2004) ReviewMy experience with the PBS concert series has always been a good to great one. Unfortunately, this is the first one I have been slightly disappointed with. This December 9th, 2004 event definitely does not compare with others such as the many Soul, Doo Wop and Pop events. I expected the 60's Rock Experience reunion to be one of my favorites but I must agree with the last reviewer that the "fake or canned" applause is annoying. Below is my observation:
Pros
----
* Audio: 5 stars (excluding the older footage); 5.1 audio
* Video: 4.5 stars (only due to the stage lighting; clarity is fine on new performances)
* 142 min. long with 29 songs/performances (old and new).
* Good mix of Rock, Folk Rock and Pop artists. Good line-up.
Cons
----
* Fake applause. One example is Scott McKenzie's performance of "San Francisco. A wonderful performance ruined by this annoying "canned" crowd cheer. Same goes for Martha Reeves performance (Rock Experience??) and Eric Burdon. It's not as evident on the pre-taped performance of "Whiter Shade of Pale" by Gary Brooker and Procol Harum.
* Mixed results on old footage. Some pretty good (The Doors), some rare but severely chopped (The original Moody Blues with Denny Laine on lead vocals singing "Go Now") and some just poor.
Still a fun DVD just to see these artists on a nationally televised event. Some voices have aged well (i.e.: Rob Grill, Chuck Negron) and others have suffered slightly but still a good time. The '60s Rock Experience Live (2004) Overview
