Caravan of Love ReviewThe United Nations should adopt Caravan of Love as the international hymn for world peace. And this version only, as the tepid remake of the Housemartins can be dismissed without discussion. Imagine millions singing 'I'm your brother' or 'Are you ready for the time of your life' . Beautiful ... or am I forty years overdue?Caravan of Love Overview

Belle et Fou ReviewThis CD is one of the all-time greats in my collection. Belle et Fou literally has it all: R&B, chill-out/lounge, house, downtempo, 70s-style pop fusion, disco, and even some Barry White-esque soul. Despite the multitude of genres -- it is a compilation, after all -- there's a beautiful cohesion among the tracks. The underlying theme of orchestral soul-jazz is complex yet unifying.
Melodic horns, lush strings, muted synth, and the gamut of percussion instruments make this CD one of the most unique and satisfying albums I have ever heard. What's even more satisfying is that you get 19 tracks of this musical bliss.
Apparently, Belle et Fou ("beautiful and crazy" in French, but the adjectives are in feminine and masculine forms, respectively) is an all-senses-incorporated theater/dance dinner show at the Casino of Berlin. Jazzanova was commissioned to create this "musical mosaic" of a soundtrack. Many of the tracks are not their own; working with the show's director, they chose the music specifically to fit the mood of the show. However, Jazzanova did write and produce several of the tracks themselves; these blend beautifully with the other hand-picked selections and add to the relaxed mood of the album.
This artsy, soulful album will quench a musical thirst you didn't know you had. Highly recommended!Belle et Fou Overview

Malcolm X: Music From The Motion Picture Soundtrack ReviewIndeed, the soundtrack from the motion picture Malcolm X achieves its goal in capturing the music of the great Muslim leader's childhood and adult years. But lacking from the soundtrack is Sam Cooke's beautifully orchestrated song "A Change is Gonna Come," an inspirational civil rights anthem that is featured near the end of director Spike Lee's masterpiece but for some reason is not on the CD. This soundtrack would surely be worthy of a five-star rating if it weren't for this glaring omission.Malcolm X: Music From The Motion Picture Soundtrack Overview

Ray Charles Live - In Concert with the Edmonton Symphony (1981) ReviewAfter reading the reviews and looking at the song list, I had high hopes for this disc. The picture quality was good and Ray's energy as he bounced onto the staged was also promising. However, from the very first song, the recording is a disappointment. In the first song, the audio mix is so far off that you can't even hear his piano. This is eventually corrected, but throughout the performance we all felt that it was a bit hollow - lots of surface flash, but none of the true depth of soul for which Ray Charles is legendary.Ray Charles Live - In Concert with the Edmonton Symphony (1981) OverviewThis DVD was recorded on January 27, 1981 in Edmonton, Alberta at Jubilee Auditorium. It captures Ray Charles at his finest as a live performer, and includes performances of classics "Hit The Road Jack", "Georgia On My Mind", "And Take These Chains From My Heart", mixed in both stereo and Dolby Surround 5.1.Track Listing:1. Jamiroquai - Live at Montreux (2007) ReviewJMQ are an absolutely wicked live band. However, a couple of songs into this DVD, I just felt like something was missing. As it progressed, it picked the funk up! Plus there was a song on there that I'd never heard before called "Shoot The Moon." I have all of their albums and I was like, okay, where'd this one come from? Anywho, if you haven't heard it yet, it's a great song. All of you partial to the "old" JMQ sound will especially Love it. All I can say is that if you ever have an opportunity to see JMQ live, DO IT (thank me later)! If you're impatient and can't wait for their next visit (like me) or you're just a fan of their music and/or performances (like me), treat yourself to this DVD and enjoy!Jamiroquai - Live at Montreux (2007) Overview

The Legends Ike & Tina Turner - Live In '71 Review"Ike & Tina Turner - Live In '71" - even in this cut state - is probably the only full-length Ike & Tina concert available on DVD today, so for that alone, it's well-worth owning.
It's all the more essential, though, because it's truly a blast - this is the most energetic, soulful, joyous live concerts I think I've ever seen - and the songs themselves are just crazy, vibrant, brilliant performances by one of the most talented musical outfits of the 1970s.
Although the predominantly Dutch audience doesn't quite seem to 'get' it at the beginning - whenever should such a concert be a seated gig, anyway? - it doesn't take in the least from our appreciation of the atmosphere, and, even though there are one or two glaring flaws in the DVD presentation itself (several of the more noteworthy tracks such as "I've Been Loving You Too Long", "Respect" and "Shake a Tail Feather" are missing, why is this??), it still doesn't stop this from being a powerful and wonderful celebration of music and dance.
Tina's on top of her game here, to watch her is to really understand the love a great performer has of his genre. From her entrance, right up to the end of "I Smell Trouble", there's not one part of her body that isn't in constant rhythm with the music, and her voice is amazing - raspy and raw, with a power behind it that lends so much more depth to the songs than many of their original performers lacked. The dance routines with the Ikettes, thanks to what's now a more amateur and simple style of camerawork, are powerful and energetic; you want to get up off the couch and dance with them! "Proud Mary" and the amazing "I Wanna Take You Higher" are examples, but even on the more downbeat tracks such as "Honky Tonk Woman" and "Come Together" (the Beatles, except better! Who knew?!) the masterful combinations of musical arrangement, vocal and choreography show us precisely why the Ike & Tina Turner revue was such a respected live act.
This is an excellent DVD, the restoration - although not perfect - has a great audio quality, and the visuals are just fine. The CD is a nice addition, though it would have been better, obviously, to include all the tracks on the DVD. Special Features are interesting, including a great short of the Ike & Tina performance at the 1971 'Soul to Soul' concert in Africa. I can't recommend this DVD highly enough; even with its shortcomings, it's still a treasure and a great recording of one of the best live acts of all time. The Legends Ike & Tina Turner - Live In '71 Overview

Luther Vandross: Live at Wembley (1989) ReviewWhat a wonderful singer we've just lost. This video is priceless. His renditions of A House is Not a Home and Superstar on this concert dvd can only be outdone by the man himself. Not only is Luther's voice velvety smooth but I guarantee that no one can adlib a song like he does. He could sing happy birthday and stretch it to last 30 minutes. There are great singers who can sing what's written on the page but they can't give you anything more than that (i.e. Whitney Houston). But it's all those little extras that Luther puts into a song that made it special.
Ladies and gents, I kid you not, when he sings Superstar it is truly mesmorizing. You actually feel exhausted when he finishes the song because it's packed with so much emotion. But while he sings it all you can do is sit there like you've been hypnotized, hanging on every note, and waiting for and wanting of it more even though you know he's done with it.
Luther has always prided himself on being a story teller. There's no talent required to write lyrics that ask us to get undressed and jump in the sack with someone. But a poet can find so many creative ways to express emotion and that's what holds your attention. It's the story of love being told. Not just songs about jumping on someone's bones. That's what brings out the feeling of love we have for one another. This is, today, a rare art. Whatever shall we do without Luther? There will never come another I'm afraid.
No one can compare to him and that's the heartbreaking thing of it all. I hope he now sings in the midst of the angels.
...And now another has taken flight,
to leave this world of hateful plight.
And when I close my eyes to be kissed,
I'll think of your music and how you'll be missed...
Rest well!
There will never be another Luther. You should treat yourself to this dvd before they become too hard to find.Luther Vandross: Live at Wembley (1989) Overview

The Commitments: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack ReviewI have to admit that I have never seen this movie, but I heard a couple of songs from it and just had to buy this album. I also had no idea until reading the rest of these reviews, that the lead singer Andrew Strong was only 16 when this was recorded. That blew me away. Amazing! The album may be full of covers of classic r&b and soul songs, but WOW, what fantastic covers they are. Just as good in many ways as the originals. I am not one for watching movies, I much prefer the auditory arts to the visual, but I think this is one film I will watch when I get the chance. The Commitments: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Overviewbrani1.mustang sallyascolta2.take me to the riverascolta3.chain of foolsascolta4.the dark end of the streetascolta5.destination anywhereascolta6.i can't stand the rainascolta7.try a little tendernessascolta8.treat her rightascolta9.do right woman do right manascolta10.mr. pitifulascolta11.i never loved a manascolta12.in the midnight hourascolta13.bye bye babyascolta14.slip away

Amy Winehouse: The Girl Done Good (2008) ReviewFor Winehouse Fans - and for the curious
With Winehouse all over the tabloids due to her drug rehab problems and marital difficulties, the lady with lots of "attitude" and "big hair", plus one hell of a powerful voice has lots of US folks wondering about her life before the mega-hit album "Back To Black".
This late-2007 "analysis" of here career is the latest from the UK company Chrome Dreams in their "Under Review" series. Each of these features six or seven music journalists discussing specific albums from an artist, with video excerpts (I emphasize the word "excerpts") of the songs discussed.
Winehouse started her recording career in 2003 (with the UK album "Frank", which jazz vocal influenced (think Billie Holiday or Dinah Washington). Her next, and only other album was 2006's "Back to Black", which hit the US market in 2007.
With only two albums (both 180 degrees different from each other) in a five-year career, a full 80-minute analysis is a bit of overkill. And, unlike previous "Under Review" discs, not one of the "talking heads" has a bad thing to say about the performer or hints at even one track "might be weak". This is a true "Amy Fan Club".
Still, I was curious about her pre-"Back To Black" days and, while I didn't learn when, or why, she got all her tattoos, or how she met her musician husband, I get find the disc interesting to watch once. The production qualities are of the high standard I've seen in other recent Chrome Dreams DVDs.
If you are looking for a performance video, this is not it. If however, you want to learn more about Winehouse's music career, you'll get what you are looking for. Add a "star" if you are a true Winehouse "fan".
