Music in Review: Creedence Clearwater Revival (2006) ReviewThis "CCR Critical Review" is just a part of the real and true story because the lider of the band, John Fogerty, doesn't appear in this DVD. I don't like some opinions of Stu Cook and Doug Clifford after a long long time ago speaking bad things about Fogerty while they are touring up today as "Creedence Clearwater Revisited" playing all the hits of their "enemy". It's not a good example to follow...

The Grass Roots:Powers Of The Night/Uprooted(Rob Grill) ReviewThis is a bootleg release (poorly) dubbed from the original vinyl records. I have no idea why Amazon even allows this to be listed, but do yourself a favor and save your money.

Mason Jennings: Use Your Van ReviewThis journey of the release of Jennings' "Use your Voice" is amazing. It follows the band members (without too much personal detail) through their trials and tribulations of life on the road, recording on a non-major label and the development of the music. The cinematography is amazing and is not overly jumpy like a lot of other music dvds. Definitely one of the best I've seen thus far. It plays on the processes musicians go through (but doesn't pick up the "poor, pity me--i live on the road vibe) and really focuses on the meaning behind the music. A must for any Mason Jennings fan. I take that back, a must for anyone interested in music.Mason Jennings: Use Your Van Overview

Bob Dylan Revealed (2011) ReviewI did learn a lot about my man in the '60s and early '70s. I didn't follow his career much after that, so I found this an easy way to catch up, although the DVD does not cover his comeback in 1997. Many talking heads, including various band members, and occasional short interviews from the past provided lots of little details and yet so much was left out too.
The editing could have been tighter to make the 110 minutes less boring; I also didn't like the style of the choppy editing and the lack of a central narrator to fill in and make the transitions smoother and easier to follow. And why must we see the interviewer? Overall, a low budget feel to the production, like his main focus was to have fun with it.
Another disappointment was the lack of any of Dylan's music actually performed by Dylan. There are some detailed reviews on line you can find by doing a Google search, if you're considering a purchase. Nice that our library had a copy to view.Bob Dylan Revealed (2011) Overview

The Byrds: Under Review ReviewI have just spent an entire afternoon viewing this. If you are in any way interested in the The Byrds then you will find this attractive little package to be truly enthralling. If you are a Beatles fan as well and you enjoyed the 'Anthology' DVDs then this certainly will not disappoint. It begins with a highly intelligent analysis of the ferment that mid 60s America experienced. From then on all the Byrds albums (except the reunion one from 1973 on Asylum)are examined in some depth. Throughout all this, the highly knowledgable experts consider just what it was that made this wonderful band so special. A most welcome quality is the way it gives roughly equal time to each phase in the group's history - and so the second disk is devoted almost entirely to the post 1967 period. To this end there are lengthy and extremely thoughtful insights from latterday Byrds, John York and Gene Parsons. To top it all the extremely versatile Mr York has written and performed on 12 string guitar, a most engaging little score that initially has you wondering which early Byrds album it comes from. Up to now the best biography has been Johnny Rogan's 'Timeless Flight Revisited'. This latest release would serve as a superb companion piece to that. I've been a Byrds'devotee ever since first hearing them on Radio Caroline in the summer of '65 .... but I learnt a great deal from this. The Byrds: Under Review Overview

Jack Goes Boating ReviewThis is a richly textured soundtrack that follows the entwined stories of two couples, four broken people doing the best they can with what they've got. It's like a buoy that moves up and down with the emotional highs and lows of the film. I dare you to listen to this soundtrack without something nearby to dry your eyes. Dylan Speaks: The Legendary 1965 Press Conference in San Francisco (2006) ReviewIn December 1965 - less than 6 months after Dylan went "electric" at the Newport Folk Festival, he was in San Francisco for 3 concerts. Jazz critic Ralph Gleason arranged for a televised hour-long press conference at WQED and recorded it on video. Thanks to the late Gleason's son Toby (who has made many of his father's Jazz Casual" jazz shows available on DVD), the full press conference is now available. This is a MUST for true Dylan fans and an entertaining curiosity for those who were fascinated by Martin Scorsese's documentary on Dylan earlier this year.
By technical standards, the print is top notch and sharp. The sound is the best that can be expected when the questioners did not use microphones to ask Dylan their questions. (You can hear his answers just fine!).
There were about 30 reporters in the room, including poet Allen Ginsburg (who Dylan lists - in answer to one question - as one of his favorite poets).
I won't give away all of the gems which come from Dylan during the 50-minute conference but He's really prophetic when asked: "If you were to sell out to `commercial interests', what would they be ?". He replies "Ladies garments" . 40 years later he was doing commercials for Victoria's Secret!
Dylan is VERY relaxed in his manner and quite open. He chain smokes through the whole session.
This DVD has no bonus features and is sort of budget priced, so it's definitely worth a watching and , if you are a Dylan completist, adding to your collection.

The Grateful Dead Movie ReviewThe Grateful Dead movie came out in 1977 but consists of footage shot during an October 1974 series of concerts at the Winterland, the last to use the "wall of Sound" system, and the shows preceeded a break from touring but by the time it came out, they had already resumed performing. It is as much about the fans, the sound crew, the "wall of sound" PA, and promoter Bill Graham as about the band. When I saw it back when it came out and a couple times at local high school auditoriums over the next few years, I was always left with the feeling that it was a little short on uninterupted concert footage. The film tries to cover so much ground the music performances suffer. The other place I felt it was lacking was the sound mix. This new DVD release basically fixes my two main gripes about the original release. It has a second bonus disc of extra song performances, and it has been remixed- it now sounds alot better (but for those who want the original mix, you can play it that way too for the movie portion). There is also some extra interview footage. The transfer of the film has been well done. The dead always had good people working for them, whether it was Betty Cantor, Dan Healy, Steve Parish or Ron Wickersham- and now Jeffrey Norman and David Lemeieux, the keepers of the vault. They have done some excellent work with this release and "The Closing of Winterland" DVD....both come from a period many consider to be their best. Now we can have our own virtual Dead concert. If you like this DVD, I'd also recommend the 5 CD "Movie soundtrack" set which is one of the best audio releases. The Grateful Dead Movie Overview

James Taylor - Pull Over (2002) ReviewI'm a bit torn when it comes to this DVD. On the one hand, James Taylor is an extremely talented musician, especially in concert. The material on this DVD is everything a Taylor fan could hope for - the classics like Fire and Rain, a few less well-known songs such as Frozen Man (beautifully done on this DVD), and some stuff from October Road. But the production values on the DVD itself are a bit less than stellar. The quality of the picture is okay at best, and at times rather poor. Also, whoever did the camera transitions should be fired - call me picky, but the transitions between views were often poorly timed and lent absolutely nothing to the experience of watching the performance.
Still, despite all this, I give it five stars because I love James Taylor, and I love his music. Any fan who can say the same will surely like this DVD. The technical issues aside, I am very pleased with Pull Over. It's no substitute for seeing James perform in person, but it is nevertheless a must-have for James Taylor addicts.James Taylor - Pull Over (2002) OverviewWith a career thriving well into its fourth decade and one of the most beloved catalogs in the world, James Taylor is more than the definitive singer-songwriter. He's an American treasure. His latest project, James Taylor & Band-Pull Over, captures James at the height of his craft. Filmed in the summer of 2001, the 23-song program features James's greatest hits, fan favorites and a look ahead. The DVD features 5.1 mixes done by Grammy winner Frank Filipetti, a complete discography and a 10-minute behind-the-scenes look at the recording of October Road. When James Taylor picked up the Best Male Pop Vocal Performance trophy at the 44th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony in February 2001 (for "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight," a track from Michael Brecker's Nearness Of You collection), it was the latest in a string of Grammy wins for the artist going back three decades. Taylor earned his first Grammy (Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male) in 1971 for his recording of Carole King's "You've Got A Friend." After moving to Columbia Records in 1976, Taylor claimed his second Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male Grammy in 1977 for his wry interpretation of Jimmy Jones's "Handy Man." JT, his Columbia Records debut, has since gone on to hit triple platinum. In 1998, his platinum Hourglass album snared Grammys for both "Best Pop Album" and "Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical." His contribution to In Harmony, a Sesame Street album, helped that album win a "Best Recording For Children" Grammy at the 1980 ceremony.James started writing music in the mid 1960s as a student at a New England boarding school, far removed from his family and friends in the Piedmont Hills of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The first artist signed to the Beatles' Apple Records, James Taylor released his self-titled debut album in 1968. Containing instantly memorable songs like "Carolina In My Mind" and "Something In The Way She Moves," James Taylor immediately established him as an important new voice in contemporary music. Moving to California, and Warner Bros. Records, in 1969, James Taylor recorded his first platinum album, Sweet Baby James, released in March 1970. A year later, Taylor was featured on the cover of Time magazine, which heralded him as the harbinger of "the singer/songwriter era."His songs reflect his passion for music and a dedication to the constant evolution of his craft; and they have had a profound influence on both songwriters and music lovers of all generations and from all walks of life. Today it is no surprise to see children discovering his songs through their parents' record collections and immediately falling in love with the sound of his voice. Crosby, Stills & Nash - Acoustic (1991) ReviewI own quite a number of DVD concerts and this one has to be one of the top 10.Recently I purchased " Daylight Again" and was somewhat disappointed ,but this one more than adds what the other concert lacked.Crosby is totally awesome. He literally beams with enthusiasm during this entire concert. They all do, but David stole the show this time. Little did he realize he'd be undergoing a liver transplant 4 years later. Even though the concert is named " Acoustic" it's not totally that, Stills is quite electric throughout the concert. At times he's almost overwhelming on certain songs in my opinion. Their voices are powerful in this show. They started out a little flat on the first song, Deja Vu and I thought Ut Oh. Oh NO !, but then it changed and wow they got it together and sounded so good I got down right sappy. ( don't tell anyone about this please ) LOL... The sound of the DVD quality is just great. It sounded as good on my computer DVD player in stereo as it did on my Sony Trinitron with Dolby digital 5.1 surround sound. It's truely awesome. You won't be disappointed in this concert DVD , so take my word for it and add it to your collection. It will make you smile time and time again.Crosby, Stills & Nash - Acoustic (1991) OverviewItem Name: Crosby, Stills & Nash - Acoustic; Studio:Rhino / Wea

Last Days of the Fillmore (2009) ReviewI was a little bit shocked that this version of the Documentary "Fillmore, the last days" isn't even the complete film.
Rhino what in the world possessed you guys to elminate the best performance in the movie? Was it money? It certianly wasn't due to a time constraint.. Did Boz Skaggs not want any involvement? I find it hard to understand that aspect as there where announcements regarding the release of this months ago on his website.. Why the sudden disappearce of his footage and involvment? The movie itself is just O.K. but when you take out argueably one of the better performances it doesn't make it any more attractive to purchase..There were so many better performances that week that got captured on audio, Only the visuals are lacking.. (where is "Brother can you spare a dime" w/t Tower of Power horns" ... damn what a shame... Rhino.. I guess this probabley is the main reason this release was held up and pushed back..Money , Money , Money, not art.
Also this would have been the perfect type of release that would have cried out for extra bonus footage and important talking heads going on and on about the Fillmore and what it meant to them..Oh well another missed opportunity..I hope Rhinos other ventures into films and their preservation at least have the sense to realize that a film is a piece of art no matter how big or small and deserves to be seen as the director intended..Not cut for time or money concerns..put it out like it was meant to be seen..truly dreadful Rhino..
indeed..Last Days of the Fillmore (2009) Overview

The Very Best Of MTV Unplugged 3 ReviewWhen I saw this disc I thought "Another "Best of Unplugged? Let's see what left-overs were included here".
I was surprised to see that almost all the songs were hits by these artists since the earlier Best Of's included songs I had never heard before.
17 tracks (10 of which were previously unreleased) in their acoustic versions where the standouts are:
Sting - Message in a bottle
REM - It's the end of the world as we know it....
Alanis Morrissette - Hand over feet
Sheryl Crow - Leaving Las Vegas
Kiss - Sure know something
The cure - Boys don't cry
Live - I alone
THe bonus here is that a DVD with the 17 performances is included which makes this a must have for all Mtv Unplugged lovers out there.
Very enjoyable and I highly recommend to all music lovers. The Very Best Of MTV Unplugged 3 Overview

Woodstock - 3 Days of Peace & Music (The Director's Cut) (1970) ReviewWoodstock, the 40th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition is an wonderful box but far from perfect. If you have the 1994 Director's Cut you already have the meat of this box set. The extra songs are great (really!) but only worth paying for if you're itching for any new footage. Of course, if you don't already have a version of the Woodstock concert on DVD, then by all means get this box. The extra DVD contains three songs from the Creedence Clearwater Revival set which is fantastic to finally see (along with extra songs from another dozen groups). And PLEASE buy if from Amazon as they include their own exclusive DVD with a few very rare songs (limited time). The Life magazine reprint is fun but I would have preferred they replaced most of the "stuff" with another DVD. My personal peeve is the absence of Melanie. Even it you get this box set, it will still be worth the money to buy the 2 DVD set of +Jimi Hendrix: Live at Woodstock+ and (if you still have a VHS player that works) its also worth seeking out the VHS tape from 1991 titled, +Woodstock: The Lost Performances+ which contains a hour of songs that are not in the new box set. The extra songs in the new box set are not integrated into the Movie, so you will have to change DVD's to see all the songs of a particular group. Perhaps when the 50th Anniversary rolls around we will finally get a box that puts all the performance footage together as it ought to be. If not, maybe we can have our Cryogenically frozen heads defrosted in time for the 100th Anniversary (don't count on it). Oh, as to the complaints of others about the songs being "corrected", just ignore them, the sound is great.Woodstock - 3 Days of Peace & Music (The Director's Cut) (1970) Overview3 days. 3-million people.
