Legacy of Roscoe Holcomb (2010) ReviewThis is an incredible collection of footage! both documentaries and the additional performances make for an entertaining and engaging experience. I have been a Roscoe Holcomb fan for many years and have seen bits and pieces of the footage contained in the Legacy of Roscoe Holcomb. It was an extremely pleasant surprise when this DVD arrived and it contained the mother-load. On top of Roscoe,and the music, the cultural 1960s Kentucky backdrop to this set is worth purchasing this DVD in itself. If you are a fan of Old-Time Music, Bluegrass Music, Americana, Appalachian Heritage, Clawhammer Banjo, or just simply being an American, This DVD is for you!Legacy of Roscoe Holcomb (2010) OverviewRoscoe Holcomb is one of the giant iconic figures in American traditional music. He personified the "high lonesome sound" so celebrated and admired today for its powerful and haunting effect. His style of singing and his brilliant banjo and guitar playing transport the listener straight back to the earliest roots of American music, a style that remained vital in his native eastern Kentucky long after disappearing everywhere else.Although Roscoe died in 1981, his masterful performances have only gained in recognition and respect sincethen. This DVD gathers together 2 documentaries about Roscoe made by filmmaker John Cohen and classic performances captured in the 1960s. It presents a comprehensive overview of Roscoe's great and varied artistry as well as offering an incisive and intimate portrait of the man himself and his background andenvironment. Our Idiot Brother ReviewThis is a really fun, sweet and warm soundtrack to a movie of like character. Eric D. Johnson's original compositions are enjoyable for multiple listenings, and the other artists like Willie Nelson and Carole King just fill out this soundtrack so that throughout you feel like Ned, just feeling your way through life. It gives you pause and relish. I say, I am glad I bought this.Our Idiot Brother OverviewThe Our Idiot Brother soundtrack album's 16 tracks are a reflection of the film's mirthful quirkiness. The score was written by film composer, musician and author NATHAN LARSON (Boys Don't Cry, The Woodsman and The Messenger) and Fruit Bats' founder ERIC D. JOHNSON. Johnson contributed an alt incredibly cool version of "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree" to the lineup and Larson "Mellotron Melody." Another stand out is the infectious "Taking You With Me," a youthful alt country duet from MINDY SMITH and DANIEL TASHIAN written especially for the film. One of the Johnson-Larson tracks, "Cowboys and Hobos," features guest vocalist NINA PERSSON of the Swedish reared band THE CARDIGANS (whose offstage life includes being married to Larson). Check out "Lightning Bug," an unreleased track from Johnson's own FRUIT BATS and "Cool Yourself" by Thao with the Get Down Stay Down from their cult classic album Know Better Learn Faster. There's more: "When They Fight They Fight," from throwback popsters the Generationals and "The Things You Lost" from singer/tunesmith El May (aka Lara Meyerratken). Also included is CAROLE KING's Tapestry classic "Beautiful" as well as three offerings from the WILLIE NELSON canon: "Wonderful Future," "Midnight Rider" and "Ol' Blue."
