BASHMENT: THE FORK IN THE ROAD (2007) ReviewI heard my father talk about this movie for quite some time and when I went home to NYC for a visit I went to Tony Ryan's record shop in the Bronx and purchased a copy. The amazing thing was while talking to the owner of the record shop Mykal Fax the young man who made the film was there. Mykal is a very humble young man with a tremendous amount of creativity.
Bashment is a story about the lives of Jamaican people living in Brooklyn, New York. This is an independent film so the quality will not be as professional as a regular movie, but it is good. The story is about four friends and the choices they make in life, some make good choices and others fall by the wayside. Filled with action, comedy & plenty dancehall tunes it is a great movie and I recommend it highly!!!!!BASHMENT: THE FORK IN THE ROAD (2007) Overview

The Big Hit: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack ReviewThe Big Hit is one of the funniest action comedies around. It's funny, intense, crude, and campy. Despite it's over-the-top nature, certain parts of the movie are surprisingly subtle. The soundtrack pulls off the same effect. As ethnicly eclectic as its cast, the cd sports an impressive assortment of genres. My one protest is the exclusion of "The World Is New" by Save Ferris, which is one of the best songs in the movie. It's quite an interesting album, it turned me on to a whole spectrum of genres which I had never explored. A signifigant companion to the movie. The Big Hit: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Overview

Ray Charles Live - In Concert with the Edmonton Symphony (1981) ReviewAfter reading the reviews and looking at the song list, I had high hopes for this disc. The picture quality was good and Ray's energy as he bounced onto the staged was also promising. However, from the very first song, the recording is a disappointment. In the first song, the audio mix is so far off that you can't even hear his piano. This is eventually corrected, but throughout the performance we all felt that it was a bit hollow - lots of surface flash, but none of the true depth of soul for which Ray Charles is legendary.Ray Charles Live - In Concert with the Edmonton Symphony (1981) OverviewThis DVD was recorded on January 27, 1981 in Edmonton, Alberta at Jubilee Auditorium. It captures Ray Charles at his finest as a live performer, and includes performances of classics "Hit The Road Jack", "Georgia On My Mind", "And Take These Chains From My Heart", mixed in both stereo and Dolby Surround 5.1.Track Listing:1. Air Force One: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack ReviewAir Force One is a stupidly patriotic American film, that suffers from some decidedly dodgy politics. However, it is saved by some absolutely top quality action sequences, that are very well directed by Wolfgang 'Das Boot' Petersen, & splendidly photographed by Michael 'Goodfellas' Ballhaus. Added to that, it boasts one of Jerry Goldsmiths' finest action scores of the decade. The action material is fast, furious & thrilling, maintaining the 'thrill factor' on the CD, away from the film. The cue 'The Highjacking' is fabulous, with galloping brass, & driving, chopping string rhythms. Crowning it off, though, is the hugely patriotic main theme. It may be slightly OTT, but it is big, bold, & eminently memorable. It is the addition of that top theme that really pushes AFO into the 'Must Have' category.Air Force One: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Overview

The Illusionist ReviewI have just seen the wonderful new movie "The Illusionist" which was amazing in its own right. However I must say that the new score by Philip Glass enhances its impact considerably. For many, the genius composer has already produced his masterpiece with "The Hours" score. That is a wonderful work of art but I always felt his music suited better to period pieces, the only example of which up until now was his score for "The Secret Agent". Returning home I immediately played that album and I was sure of my opinion. Both his scores for The Secret Agent and The Illusionist have a grand baroque feeling in them, incredibly operatic and sensual as well. They sweep the listener effortlessly into a bygone area and almost tell the story of the film by themselves. One could watch both films without any dialogue and effects and can still feel satisfied with the end result. I take my hat off to the directors of the aforementioned films for their willingness to put aside all their egocentrical concerns and submit the outcomes of their months-spanning efforts to a man who obviously goes and tells the story of their films with music once again. Bravo Mr. Glass for this amazing new score!!!!The Illusionist OverviewMusic From The Film The Illusionist features an original score by acclained modern minimalist composer Philip Glass. Glass' renowned restrained, yet elegant style has captivated audiences around the world for years. "The soundtrack to The Illusionist is a driving force to the movie," comments director Neil Burger. "There are many scenes and sequences without dialogue and it falls to the music to tell the story." Glass recorded the original score with a large orchestra, which results in an emotionally driven and epic soundtrack.Glass' sophisticated music has been featured in numerous movies throughout his career, earning him many awards and critical praise.Award winning writer/director/actor Edward Norton stars alongside Jessica Biel and Paul Giamatti in The Illusionist.

The Secret Garden (1993) ReviewAfter watching the 1987 version, I was very disappointed with the acting and decided to definitely watch the 1993 production. The acting is superior and the setting more realistic. If someone could take the best qualities of both movies and put them into one, to me that would be the perfect Secret Garden movie.
The 1987 version taught lessons more easily to younger children, while this newer one will be enjoyed more by older children and adults. Colin's father (played by John Lynch) is a much more human portrayal. We can truly empathize with his sorrow and Colin's need to have his father in his life.
Mary Lenox was also played in a more serious light by Kate Maberley. She portrayed her character extremely well. Her story begins in India and we learn she is emotionally neglected, yet spoiled and physically well taken care of. She loses her parents in a massive earthquake. (In the 1987 film it is a plague.)
Since she can no longer stay in India, she is literally shipped off to her uncle. As she enters the monstrosity of a castle, we feel she is doomed to be neglected, hated and locked away. Even Mrs. Medlock (the housekeeper played by Maggie Smith) is not impressed or sympathetic. Mary is told "not to go wandering and poking about." Mary's natural curiosity compels her to discover a way out of her room and soon she finds secret doors, staircases, rooms and gardens.
At first Martha (a maid) is her only friend, then she soon learns to like Martha's brother Dikon. He shares her love of gardening. Martha and Dikon seem to be the only truly happy characters for the entire first half of the movie. All the actors have wonderful accents and reveal the positive and negative aspects of each character.
When Mary meets Colin, she has in fact met her match. He is her cousin who is bedridden, spoiled and annoying! His hysterical screeching makes him most unlovable. Mary shows Colin that nothing is impossible when you put your mind to it. She also says something profoundly beautiful at the end of the story.
I found the magic spell casting in this version a bit intense in comparison to the 1987 version, where dancing around the fire was a fun time. There is something about the 1987 version which I think appeals more to children, as the characters seem to have a bit more fun overall. This 1993 version has a much better ending. I recommend this version for those who want a high-quality movie, and the 1987 version for those who can overlook the acting. I think there is something to be learned from both movies.

Avonlea Christmas - Spin-off from Anne of Green Gables and Road to Avonlea (2005) ReviewI got the video yesterday and watched it. I wasn't happy with it either. The sound was awful! It sounded like it had been copied from a copy.
They didn't even mention Sarah. Heck and family memeber goes missing and you don't even call Sarah?

Down to the Bone (2007) ReviewThrough the years, there has been a proliferation of addiction drama. It's hard to imagine someone coming up with a new angle--there is addiction leading to destruction and addiction leading to rehabilitation. In either case, the addiction drama can be very alluring to the "serious" actor. What a great opportunity to showcase your acting chops--emotional devastation, a life spiraling out of control. Just think of all the actors who have received accolades (and deservedly so, for the most part) for exposing this unseemly underbelly of the human existence. What is a refreshing surprise about both "Down To The Bone" and Vera Farmiga's performance are how natural, straightforward, and understated they are.
Farmiga plays Irene, a wife and mother of two. A functional addict with a job as a supermarket checker, Irene realizes that her addiction is compromising a normal childhood for her children. Even though her husband is also a user, Irene takes steps to clean up her life when she hits a low point by stealing her daughter's birthday check to try and score a fix. The film documents her progress through a rehab program and the subsequent outpatient meetings as she attempts a drug free life. These scenes are played with a simplicity and earnestness. They are very naturalistic and the others involved play as real people instead of character types. There is no emotional grandstanding, just real individuals trying to get a grip on life--however fleeting that control may be. Connecting with a male nurse (and former heroin addict) at the rehab facility, Hugh Dillon in a great performance, Irene sees a success story and perhaps a chance at a clean life.
Not everything is easy on the outside, though, it never is. Struggling with her job (she loses efficiency when she's not stoned), a non-supportive husband, and a potential new love interest--Irene's life is a complicated as ever. But she must make changes in order to survive and succeed. Through it all, the subtlety of Farmiga's performance keeps you invested in her story. Not a hero, not a villain--she's a messed-up protagonist who makes mistakes. Farmiga doesn't need big moments to convey the complexity of Irene, and this is surely the performance of a major talent.
Director Debra Granik has made a stunningly simple film about a very difficult topic. By allowing Farmiga to develop Irene as a real person and peel away vanity and "staginess," "Down to the Bone" emerges as a sincere, relevant, and understated examination of the functioning addict. I look forward to seeing more work from Granik and Farmiga (who got a big role in "The Departed" after this film that only showcases a fraction of her apparent talent). What Would Jesus Do ReviewExcellent message - how one person can change how a whole town lives by simply saying "What would Jesus do?" This movie is loosly based on the 1898 novel, "In His Steps: What would Jesus Do?" by Charles Sheldon. The names are the same, but the story takes a modern tone, but the valuable lesson is the same. A drifter, played by John Schneider is shunned by the community even the pastor of a dying church, played by Jim Gleason, tells him "I'm sorry that I can't help you." But the message the drifter brings to a church is "would Jesus act that way?" As church members start changing the way they do things from running their businesses to helping the less fortunate, the wave of love and goodness takes over the town even when a greedy, ruthless politician wants to take over.
This message is vital to the world in this day and age. Imagine what would happen if every Christian would think before acting and ask themselves "what would Jesus do in my place?

Glamourpuss: The Lady Gaga Story (2010) ReviewI got this video and love it. But I want everyone to know that the Henry's review on this is misleading. The guys say it has all of Gaga's music videos on one disc. Well it is one disc, but there is not even one of her music videos on the disc. I've checked everywhere including the extra features and I'm positive. So if you like Lady Gaga as much as I do, then I think you will like this dvd. But just know you will only see bits and pieces of a few of her videos during the documentary. ThanksHenry maybe it would be a good ideal to watch dvds BEFORE you write a review on it. also if you were just mislead than why didn't you change your review and take that part out of it. people are still just going to read the first part of your review and order this dvd thinking that all her videos are on it and NONE of them are.
Glamourpuss: The Lady Gaga Story (2010) OverviewThis in-depth documentary film and review uncovers the foundations on which Lady Gaga's extraordinary success has been built and follows her career thereafter to the point at which it currently rests. With detailed analysis of Gaga's background, musical growth, hit songs, concerts and videos; archive and rare footage of Gaga in interview and in performance; contributions from those who have known her best across the years; expert music journalists who have followed her career closely, and many more, plus news reports, location shoots and a host of other features.

About a Boy (Widescreen Edition) (2002) ReviewThis movie is set in contemporary London and its story revolves around the life of playboy Will Freeman (Hugh Grant). Freeman is an independent man who enjoys a leisurely life carved into careful sections. His friends find him desperately lonely and unfulfilled, a notion he entirely disregards. Whilst trying to find creative new ways to meet single women for casual relationships, he meets a boy named Marcus (Nicholas Hoult). Marcus is the misfit at his school, overburdened by his freethinking and chronically depressed mother, Fiona (Toni Collette). Freeman and Marcus forge an unlikely but edifying bond that transposes their generation gap and differences. Culminating in a hilarious school music performance, the two discover new ways to navigate a changing world and terms in which to redefine the meaning of family.
Saturated by the amazing music of Badly Drawn Boy, this is an enduring and enjoyable comedy. Hugh Grant's character of the roguish unlikely hero seems ideally suited to him. Collette's performance as a seeming shallow liberal is wonderfully dynamic, bringing depth and heart to the character. The film tackles many social issues, especially problems of male (father-son) relations, from a compelling point of view. It's a picture of modern England that burrows into the largely untapped life of this fascinating country. The horribly undeveloped and unrealistic character of the rebellious teenage girl with whom Marcus becomes smitten is the only place where this film really lacks. Otherwise it is a pleasure to watch.About a Boy (Widescreen Edition) (2002) OverviewABOUT A BOY - DVD Movie

Chess in Concert (2009) ReviewFour items make this a must-have. The first is Josh Groban singing the classic "Anthem", where, as the Russian chess champion, Anatoly, he avows his love for his homeland. As Anatoly's discarded wife, Svetlana, the amazing Kerry Ellis totally nails "Someone Else's Story." There's "The Story of Chess", where the Chorus perform Tim Rice's witty take on the evolution of the game. Finally, the Quartet, where Florence (Idina Menzel), Anatoly, his minder Molokov and the Arbiter deplore how chess has sunk from "a model of decorum and tranquillity" to "a battleground for rival ideologies to slug it out with glee."
Having seen the original London West End production in 1986 with Elaine Paige, I was lucky enough to witness this superb 21st Anniversary production in the Royal Albert Hall, London, last year. Tim Rice has tightened up the plot of love and betrayal played out in the setting of chess championships in the Cold War. Florence, who manages the American champion, falls for the Russian; complications - political, ethical, personal - ensue. From the moment the outstanding Chorus bursts into "Merano" - blending chess with commercialism as a tiny Central European town prepares to welcome the world - right to the devastating "Endgame" and final twist, the dramatic pace never lets up.
In this DVD, hopefully the sound difficulties of this production will have been ironed out. As to the cast - they were fantastic!! Groban is a revelation: a brilliant actor as well as singer. Kerry Ellis was a showstopper. As Florence, Idina Menzel, (so good in Wicked (2003 Original Broadway Cast), was too strident for my taste, lacking subtlety and roundness in acting. ("Heaven Help My Heart" doesn't register, and "Nobody's Side" pales away.) However, her "You and I" with Groban still tugs the heartstrings: "we go on pretending / Stories like ours Have happy endings."
The wonderful David Bedella (Jerry Springer: the Opera), makes a great, sinister Molokov. And Adam Pascal gives his charismatic ALL as Freddy, the tormented American bearing luggage from the past: "Pity the Child." Marti Pellow (of pop group Wet Wet Wet) was a disappointment as the Arbiter, a little under-performed I felt.
Rice's lyrics are trenchant, tender, intelligent, witty. The music, by Benny and Bjorn of ABBA, is a perfect rock score, conveying all the emotions and tensions necessary and fully matching the lyrics.
In the main, this is a superb production of a classic and underestimated musical.Chess in Concert (2009) Overview

As It Is in Heaven (2004) ReviewI have only reviewed one movie before (a bad one), but I had to say something about this movie because it was such a great surprise. I think this is the best movie I have seen for years and my wife liked it even more. This movie is beautiful, touching, and has an important message. I think it is the best Scandinavian movie since "My Life as a Dog" and "Babettes Feast", perhaps the best Scandinavian movie ever. It is in Swedish with English subtitles.
Daniel Dareus a famous musician returns to his Childhood village LjusÄker in Northern Sweden after ending his career in the aftermath of a heart attack. The members of the local church choir ask him to help them. His professional methods are not easily understood by the locals but the choir members love him. The drama filled events that unfold result in people finding the courage to face their fears and to grow, something that is not appreciated by everyone. All his life all Daniel wanted to do was to help people finding their voice, and for the first time in his life he truly succeeds in doing that in more than one way.
The village and its people reminded me a lot of my own home village in Northern Sweden (I am from further North though). Daniel Dareus reminded me in more than one way of my Amazon friend Giordano Bruno and I recommend it to all my Amazon friends and anyone who is interested in seeing something different.
As It Is in Heaven (2004) OverviewACADEMY AWARD NOMINEE: BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILMNominated for Best Foreign Film at the 2005 Academy Awards, As It Is In Heaven is the story of Daniel, a successful international conductor who returns to his childhood village in Sweden. As the amateur choir develops and grows, he is drawn to the people of his old hometown, makes friends and finds love... The Emperor's Club (Widescreen Edition) (2002) ReviewI had no idea how much I would end up enjoying this wonderful and awe-inspiring film. I was worried that it was going to try to be another "Dead Poets Society." To my surprise, it isn't. In fact, I'll even go further and say that I thought this was a lot better. "The Emperor's Club" is a powerful and gripping drama about principle, virtue and ethical compromises.
The story revolves around a teacher, William Hundert. He's a passionate man who loves what he does and hopes that he is actually having an impact on his students with his teachings. Things get complicated when he meets a new student, Sedgewick Bell. The kid is a troublemaker who cries out for attention with his actions. However, Hundert is convinced that he can turn him around and help him learn something from his class; not only that, but he hopes that he can learn something about life itself. Hundert believes in him so much that he is even willing to make a great compromise that will have an absolute impact in some way, whether it be positive or negative. The results are surprising and unexpected, but the overall product is an outstanding movie that makes you think twice about your life.
This was really a great film that had me surprised all the way. I had no idea how deep and effective it would end up being. When you see "The Emperor's Club," it actually makes you want to look at your life right then and there. You realize that you do want to live a life of honor, virtue and principle. We tend to live in a society that forgets about these important qualities sometimes; this being dubbed, "The Real World." However, this does not mean that we have to forget or overlook these things. It is possible to still have virtue in one's life.
Everything about this movie is remarkable. It has some great acting, a terrific script, and a genuine and authentic direction. Kevin Klein is amazing as William Hundert. It's a crime that he did not receive an Academy Award for his performance in this underrated film; or at least he should've been nominated for one. He is able to portray a great and wonderful character; also, he is able to play a character with realistic flaws that reminds us that he is a human-being. This is something we rarely see in films; as we are always given the impression that teachers are invincible and flawless when they are usually portrayed in films.
The DVD has some nice extra features to go along with it. The picture and sound quality is great. You can even watch it in DTS if you have the right system for it. The special features included are deleted scenes, commentary from the director, a making-of special and more. A pretty nice package, if you ask me.
"The Emperor's Club" is a wonderful experience that should be enjoyed by all. If you have not seen this yet, do yourself a favor; pick this up the next time you're at a video store. Already becoming a favorite of mine in so little time, "The Emperor's Club" is a unique and gripping film about what it takes to live an honorable life. Don't miss out on this great experience. The Emperor's Club (Widescreen Edition) (2002) OverviewPOWERFUL AND INSPIRING STORY ABOUT THE MEANING OF HONOR, THE PRICE OF VIRTUE AND THE BELIEF THAT IN EVERYONE'S LIFE THERE IS THAT ONE PERSON WHO MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE

A Little Princess (1995) Review"I am a Princess. All girls are. Even if they live in tiny old attics. Even if they live in rags. Even if they aren't pretty, or young, or smart, they're still princesses. All of us! Didn't your father ever tell you that? Didn't he?"
Well no. My Dad didn't call me a princess, and that's because I'm a guy. But after seeing this movie, I was really beginning to wish I was. "A Little Princess" is quite simply amazing. It is the most magical family movie there is. I just can't recommend it high enough. I saw this at the movie theater, 7 times and it is quite easily my favorite film of all time.
Set in 1914, "A Little Princess" tells the story of a girl called Sara who goes to a strict boarding school while her father from England goes to fight the War. The school is run by a mean spirited head teacher called Miss Minchin. From the start, Miss Minchin is jealous of Sara who considers herself to be a princess. After all, her Papa has told her that she will always be his little princess. Despite the harshness of Miss Minchin, Sara continues to fill those around her with magic as she tells stories to them of a beautiful princess and her prince.
The emotion begins early in this movie, firstly being when Sara and her Papa say goodbye as he goes into war. Midway through the movie Sara hears that her Papa has been killed in battle. I have to say, when I watched this I was gone. Ok I wasn't gone yet, but I was holding the tears in. Actress Liesel Matthews who plays Sara is so genuine, and director Alfonso Cuaron definitely brings out the best in her. It is at the end which is complimented by the music of Patrick Doyle, that I really did feel a few tears going by my face. It happened just after Sara realized she may truly have lost her father forever.
The DVD itself just has a trailer and it would be great if it had more extras, but the moie is just so wonderful that you have to buy this DVD. In addition, the subtle Dolby Digital 5.1 is just right for a movie such as this.
