Chet Atkins: Rare Performances 1976-1995 (1994) ReviewSo many reviews of Chet Atkins music are filled with comments of how bad the video quality is or how cheesy the musical programs were.
With Chet Atkins, the proof is in the pudding.
You just have to see him play and that eliminates all the talk.
This compilation is right in the middle of the time of early video and
embarrasing wardrobe of the late 70's and early 80's; However, Chet Atkins is an inspirational guitar player and when he starts playing it's
a treat to the eyes and ears.
The Soundstage performance of Stars and Stripes Forever alone is worth the price of this video. That is one amazing execution!
Guitar players will appreciate how difficult that first chord of Cascade is, yet Chet Atkins makes it look like a walk in the park.
You need to view Yankee Doodle Dixie more than once to appreciate the guitar arrangement and realize that Chet plays Yankee Doodle and Dixie
at the same time!
Those who play the guitar seriously, those who know how much practice and dedication it takes to get to this level, will enjoy this DVD the most.
Chet Atkins always made it look like butter. It is no exception in this disc.
So, get the video, stop complaining and get to practice.
Chet Atkins Rare Performances should inspire you until your fingers fall off.

Jessie James ReviewIf you are considering purchasing this album (for the formidable price of...$1.99), I would go right ahead. All of Jessie's songs are well done and her voice is just fine and dandy. As I was listening to the album all the way through, I found myself singing along, bopping around in my chair and occasionally laughing out loud, not in derision, but in delight at the humor and general fun of some of the songs lyrics. The tunes are catchy and Jessie's singing is just as good or better, in spots, than a lot of the other young women topping the charts. So, perhaps the nay-sayers will give her another listen, with the mind set that she's here to entertain us, not to change our lives and save our souls.Jessie James Overview2009 debut album from the new Pop princess. Recorded in Los Angeles, New York, Nashville, and London, the album takes off with 'Wanted', the full-throttle Dance-Rock scorcher that Jessie co-wrote with American Idol judge and hit songwriter Kara DioGuardi. Your Cheatin' Heart: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack ReviewGreat singing for a teenager. "Your Cheatin' Heart" was a movie better heard than seen according to one reviewer & for those who are familiar with the movie, we know why! Anyway, what you have here is the original LP plus a wealth of outtakes/alternate takes. The outtakes which are mostly vocal/guitar demos, put you in the mind of the many home recordings that Hank, Sr. performed-simple, laidback. If you own the original LP, buy this as there is a much better sound quality (even though first generation masters couldn't be found) plus the many outtakes. Kudos to RHINO for releasing this on CD. Maybe we can get "Songs My Father Left Me" released on CD next!

The Legends Ike & Tina Turner - Live In '71 Review"Ike & Tina Turner - Live In '71" - even in this cut state - is probably the only full-length Ike & Tina concert available on DVD today, so for that alone, it's well-worth owning.
It's all the more essential, though, because it's truly a blast - this is the most energetic, soulful, joyous live concerts I think I've ever seen - and the songs themselves are just crazy, vibrant, brilliant performances by one of the most talented musical outfits of the 1970s.
Although the predominantly Dutch audience doesn't quite seem to 'get' it at the beginning - whenever should such a concert be a seated gig, anyway? - it doesn't take in the least from our appreciation of the atmosphere, and, even though there are one or two glaring flaws in the DVD presentation itself (several of the more noteworthy tracks such as "I've Been Loving You Too Long", "Respect" and "Shake a Tail Feather" are missing, why is this??), it still doesn't stop this from being a powerful and wonderful celebration of music and dance.
Tina's on top of her game here, to watch her is to really understand the love a great performer has of his genre. From her entrance, right up to the end of "I Smell Trouble", there's not one part of her body that isn't in constant rhythm with the music, and her voice is amazing - raspy and raw, with a power behind it that lends so much more depth to the songs than many of their original performers lacked. The dance routines with the Ikettes, thanks to what's now a more amateur and simple style of camerawork, are powerful and energetic; you want to get up off the couch and dance with them! "Proud Mary" and the amazing "I Wanna Take You Higher" are examples, but even on the more downbeat tracks such as "Honky Tonk Woman" and "Come Together" (the Beatles, except better! Who knew?!) the masterful combinations of musical arrangement, vocal and choreography show us precisely why the Ike & Tina Turner revue was such a respected live act.
This is an excellent DVD, the restoration - although not perfect - has a great audio quality, and the visuals are just fine. The CD is a nice addition, though it would have been better, obviously, to include all the tracks on the DVD. Special Features are interesting, including a great short of the Ike & Tina performance at the 1971 'Soul to Soul' concert in Africa. I can't recommend this DVD highly enough; even with its shortcomings, it's still a treasure and a great recording of one of the best live acts of all time.The Legends Ike & Tina Turner - Live In '71 Overview

Get Low ReviewI just saw Robert Duvall's latest film, so the music soundtrack has relevence. But even if I hadn't seen Get Low, I would have bought it anyway. It's that good.
The album is an atmospheric mix of old-time, classic country and original bluegrass music performed by the premiere artists of those genres. You may already know the work of Alison Krauss and Jerry Douglas, but if you've never heard The SteelDrivers before, this is your chance to be truly impressed by an exceptional bluegrass band. The gritty authenticity of lead singer Chris Stapleton's powerful voice will send chills up and down your spine.
More important, this nostalgic compilation reminds this former East Tennessean of some of the crusty individualists that still live in the mountains and hollers of Appalachia. Thus, I will play this album often, but especially when I'm headed back home.Get Low Overview

Live In Concert CD/DVD combo package ReviewI have seen Martina Mcbride live several times, the one thing that never ceases to amaze me is her live vocals. On record her voice is incredible, to hear her live is something else altogether. "Live In Concert" is a live concert recorded last year on Martina's "Waking Up Laughing" tour. I caught this tour last year, but this is a slightly expanded show. Martina delivers a 2 hour concert with hits and covers. Her covers are interesting, where else do you get to hear classic country, "You Ain't Woman Enough" and "Rose Garden" along side classic rock, "Don't Stop Believin'" and "Hit Me With Your Best Shot"?? Martina covers both styles flawlessly. If you haven't seen Martina in concert, catch her next time she's in your area, if you can't do that, pick up this CD/DVD and sit back and enjoy a great show. If you have seen her before, this is a great reminder of how great her shows are. By the way, the CD contains eight live tracks (not studio tracks as this listing makes it sound). That is why most people, like me, received a CD instead of a DVD. However, Digital Row was aggressive in fixing the problem, and very courteous in the correspondence I had with them. I now have the DVD and it is great. If you are even just a casual Chet Atkins fan, you will love this show. Everyone of his guests (Emmylou, Waylon, Willie,etc.) has a tremendous respect for him and their performances show it. For me, the outstanding segment was at the close, when Chet sang "I Still Can't Say Goodbye", which he says always reminded him of his father. It is beautiful and very moving.
