Girl Groups (1983) ReviewI am the credited director and co-producer of this documentary. I was surprised to see that Amazon actually has the video, I thought it was long gone. No DVD's, too bad. I drifted onto Amazon because a good buddy of mine loved this era and I wanted to get a copy for him. Glad to see that Girl Groups, The Story of a Sound still lives, such as it is.
This film took almost a year of my life, a very stressful year at that since it is always difficult to juggle the creative storytelling aspect of making a film with the realities of budget and music/clip clearance. We went to ABC for footage from the show, Hullabaloo that they did not even know they had. We dug up stuff in Detroit. I flew there for a blizzard that winter and found footage from a local afternoon program, Teen Town that was Detroit's local American Bandstand. That stuff was sitting in a damp basement at a TV station in Windsor, Canada on two-inch video, long extinct even then in 1982. This is the station where Soupy Sales got his start for you trivia fans out there.
I conducted all the interviews and must say I fell into major crush with Darlene Love. What a sweetie and I could listen to her sing all day long. As Darlene would say, "She had a voice on HER!" Mary Wilson was a most classy lady, and Arlene Smith was also such a beautiful person - she had voice on HER! Ronnie Spector was lots of fun.
Lieber and Stoller were such cool guys, sitting on top of the world, playing pool in an apartment on Park Avenue. They were such good friends and seemed to really have enjoyed themselves while making music history. Ellie Greenwich was a great story teller, especially about those bad girls from Queens, the Shangri-las.
When I look back to that one year making Girl Groups, despite the difficulties, I never once got tired of the music, and in the editing room in the Brill Building where all that stuff happened in the first place, we must have seen the show 100 times, maybe more. Grahame Weinbren and his team did an amazing job making it what it became, as all great editor/filmmakers do. Grahame had a thing for cheese sandwiches, something I never would ever think of eating before or since then, but every day we'd be chomping on these giant cheese sandwiches from Smilers. Swiss cheese on rye, mayo. How's your cholesterol, Grahame?
One reviewer mentioned that the Supremes sequence in the film was too long. I was always thought so, too, but we had to buy a minimum of ten songs from Motown. At that time, Motown had never licensed any
of their music to any entity outside of Motown. We were the first and it took forever to make the deal with them. Our attorneys closed the deal with Motown, we sent them what we agreed upon, and the masters didn't come. We kept on having to postpone the final mix until those masters showed up, which of course finally did, but not before we ate all the swiss cheese in Manhattan. There was major stress at every turn on this project, but nobody cares about that because the end result was good.
Stephanie Bennett's Delilah Films deserves all the credit for having the guts to begin a project way under budget, but to get what we needed when we needed to have it. Stephanie was always the warrior/producer, fearless, tough, a get-it-done-gal. A great co-producer to have. Cheers, Steph, wherever you are!!!

Magic Weed - The Truth About Cannabis Sativa (2003) ReviewThis is by far the most boring, unprofessional piece of garbage on the subject that I've ever had the misfortune to be suckered into buying. There isn't 1 feature on the DVD that is worth a cuss. The main feature is a nauseatingly boring history of cannabis' use across the planet. It looks like it was made with the hope of getting it on PBS but the poor quality and the boredom factor likely kept it from ever seeing a second of air. The worst and most insulting inclusion by far is what is supposed to be an up-close look at the annual Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam. It's a guy ambling around with his camcorder on- utterly insulting to ask a consumer to shell out any money for this half-baked schlock. The most intriguing thing about this DVD is the title. If you want good dope on dope, see "Grass" with Woody Harrelson or buy the book "The Emperor Wears No Clothes" by Jack Herer. Avoid this one like the plague.Magic Weed - The Truth About Cannabis Sativa (2003) Overview

The Velvet Underground - Under Review (2006) ReviewI have to admit, I was kind of disappointed by this DVD. I knew that there would be little visual footage of the Velvets, but I guess I was expecting something more. Of course, the only real footage of the band in action comes from the 1966-67/Warhol period. The songs of the Velvets aired in the DVD are generally accompanied by stock video footage of New York, some of which seems recent despite its being in black and white.
Some true insights do come from many of the interviewees, especially Moe Tucker and Doug Yule but also many of the others, including critics like Christgau and Warholite Billy Name.
The DVD primarily consists of analysis of various songs from the Velvets' career done album by album, though the "Live 1969" and "VU" albums are pretty much just glossed over. The song analysis on the songs is generally insightful, but the history of the band is pretty sketchy, with little account of the band's formation or their very early days before meeting Warhol and Nico. The information provided in the book "Up-Tight" or the booklet to "Peel Slowly and See" is much more in-depth than what we get on the DVD.
Also, the narrator (who sounds quite bored and unenthusiastic) states that the VU boycotted New York gigs "for some strange reason," not mentioning that it was because New York radio stations refused to play their first singles. This inaccuracy makes me think that the producers didn't do any research other than interviewing people about the band.
Of course, Lou Reed and John Cale's lack of participation is a big negative, and the DVD can hardly be called definitive without it. Indeed, this DVD isn't really a documentary, and is hardly up to the level of, say, the "American Masters" series, which did an excellent biography of Lou Reed. Yet, "Under Review" isn't described as a history of the Velvets but only as an "independent critical analysis," and it does provide that. Still, I found the DVD lacking somehow, and anyone looking for more than just an analysis of the Velvets' musical significance is going to be disappointed. The Velvet Underground - Under Review (2006) Overview

Alexander ReviewAlexander, King of Macedon, Captain General of the Greeks, Shahanshah of Persia, Lord of Asia, son of Zeus-Ammon, Iskander Gojastak (Alexander the Cursed), Dhu L'Kairnan (the two horned), Alexander the Great. A figure as well known as Alexander has been known by at least the proverbial ninety and nine names. Some modern historians consider him to be the worst butcher in history, others regard him as the most significant figure of the Hellenic world. All of this and more will surely reemerge with the release of Oliver Stone's film "Alexander." It seems inane to worry about what musical sound should be associated with this historical colossus. But that is exactly the task given to the famous Greek composer Vangelis. To be fair no one has any accurate idea of what music in Alexander's tent may have sounded like. Most likely it would not work well in a twenty first century film, or a club in downtown Athens. But Vangelis has been equal to the task on numerous occcasions including incredible scores for "Chariots of Fire," "Blade Runner," and "1492." But in all three of these scores there was a common strength and weakness. All three possessed outstanding main themes, but suffered with rather mundane music in other parts of the score. Thus his "greatest hits" wears much better than the entire soundtracks from these films. With "Alexander," however, we have more of a comprhensive film score. There are still references to what might be considered period music and the various exotica that ply the edges of new age cliche, and some over the top choral arrangements, but as a sountrack album this works better than earlier recordings. The main strength is still a marvelous main theme, first heard in "Titans" that transforms into percussion driven battle music with "The Drums of Gaugamela," and reappears both triumphantly and mystically in "Dream of Babylon." These are the grand higlights of this very good score. The weakness of many composers is that they hit on a good theme and then beat it to death. Here Vangelis leaves us wanting more of that main theme, or more variations on it. It is unclear how this score will work with the film itself, but as a soundtrack album this is a worthy achievement that will, no doubt, strike a solid chord with many parts of the modern audience. Nicely produced and packaged by Sony.Alexander Overview

Rebel Music - The Bob Marley Story (2001) ReviewIt starts out really good then peters out midway on. Why is it that whenever Bob is about to go in depth about a particular subject, the filmmakers cut to him performing? How could they not address the Wailers break up? I mean they literally ignore it. Isn't the break up as significant as them getting together in the first place? Did Marley's music regress, progress or stagnate after Bunny and Peter left? How did Bob feel about Bunny and Tosh leaving? And what happened to Bunny anyway? You see him early on and then you don't see him again. Since he's the only one alive of the three, doesn't his opinion have more weight than most. All I'm saying is the audience would have gotten an even better understanding of Marley with more Bunny and more Tosh.Rebel Music - The Bob Marley Story (2001) OverviewTells the fascinating and heart-wrenching story of legendary reggae superstar bob marley the musician the poet the prophet. Bob marley was a symbol of human rights who through his music decried the injustices of all people and fought for social equality with zealous determination.Studio: Uni Dist Corp (music)Release Date: 06/26/2001Run time: 89 minutesRating: NrDirector: Jeremy Marr

The Grateful Dead Movie ReviewThe Grateful Dead movie came out in 1977 but consists of footage shot during an October 1974 series of concerts at the Winterland, the last to use the "wall of Sound" system, and the shows preceeded a break from touring but by the time it came out, they had already resumed performing. It is as much about the fans, the sound crew, the "wall of sound" PA, and promoter Bill Graham as about the band. When I saw it back when it came out and a couple times at local high school auditoriums over the next few years, I was always left with the feeling that it was a little short on uninterupted concert footage. The film tries to cover so much ground the music performances suffer. The other place I felt it was lacking was the sound mix. This new DVD release basically fixes my two main gripes about the original release. It has a second bonus disc of extra song performances, and it has been remixed- it now sounds alot better (but for those who want the original mix, you can play it that way too for the movie portion). There is also some extra interview footage. The transfer of the film has been well done. The dead always had good people working for them, whether it was Betty Cantor, Dan Healy, Steve Parish or Ron Wickersham- and now Jeffrey Norman and David Lemeieux, the keepers of the vault. They have done some excellent work with this release and "The Closing of Winterland" DVD....both come from a period many consider to be their best. Now we can have our own virtual Dead concert. If you like this DVD, I'd also recommend the 5 CD "Movie soundtrack" set which is one of the best audio releases. The Grateful Dead Movie Overview

Triumph of the Nerds (1996) ReviewTriumph of the Nerds is still one of the best public level documentaries about the origins and development of personal computers from their beginnings in the mid-70's on through the IBM/Apple years and into the mid-90's with the launch of Windows 95. It is dated somewhat, especially at the end with the forecasts about the future growth of the internet and what it would mean to PC and Mac development and the world. Nothing was truer then than remains today, predicting the long-term future of the computer and internet industry is simply impossible.
What troubles me with this edition by Ambrose is that they have apparently sacrificed bits and pieces here and there for some unfathomable reason. The main points are all still there, but some of the side stories and flavors have been cut. Examples include Steve Wozniak's description of his early interest in electronics in finding an old AT&T phone company manual to learn to hack into the phone system to call the Pope. It cuts Steve Jobs' description of his early experiences with Bill Gates, saying that the original version of Word was "just terrible but they kept at it...", and someone whose name I can't remember describing the early mainframes and trying to use one as "you were lucky if your entire city had one mainframe, and, if your company had it, there would only be one." These are the ones I noticed right off, I'm sure there are others and they are minor things, but it's troubling that a company buys the rights to a show and edits it for whatever reason rather than simply giving us the whole deal.Triumph of the Nerds (1996) OverviewIt happened more or less by accident; the people who made it happen wereamateurs; and for the most part they still are. From his own Silicon Valley garage, author Bob Cringley puts PC bigshots and nerds on the spot, and tells their incredible true stories. Like the industry itself, the series is informative, funny and brash. Some of the episode participants include: Bill Gates (Chairman of Microsoft, the richest man in the world), Steve Jobs (Hippie co-founder of Apple Computer; CEO of NeXT Computer; and the man who wanted to change the world), and Steve Wozniak (Co-founder of Apple Computer; engineering genius, practical joker).

Glory: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack ReviewI am a huge fan of movie soundtracks. I've listened to them my entire life, before any other form of music. This score stands out from all the others I have ever heard in my life. James Horner deserved the Oscar he got, but not for Titanic. Don't get me wrong, Titanic was good, but you have to admit that the Oscar was for the popularity of My Heart Will Go On. I see his Oscar as one for Glory, just delayed by 9 years. I am a huge fan of John Williams, but this one score by Horner is equal to any of Williams' Oscar winning performaces. Horner's use of drums and the fifes are just as powerful as Williams' violin solos by the legendary Itzak Perlman in Schindler's List. If you want to be emotionally moved by a piece of music, you won't find a better cd than the Glory soundtrack by James Horner. Other suggestions: Appollo 13 by Horner, Hook and Nixon by Williams, Star Trek First Contact by Jerry Goldsmith.Glory: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Overview
