Our Idiot Brother ReviewThis is a really fun, sweet and warm soundtrack to a movie of like character. Eric D. Johnson's original compositions are enjoyable for multiple listenings, and the other artists like Willie Nelson and Carole King just fill out this soundtrack so that throughout you feel like Ned, just feeling your way through life. It gives you pause and relish. I say, I am glad I bought this. Our Idiot Brother OverviewThe Our Idiot Brother soundtrack album's 16 tracks are a reflection of the film's mirthful quirkiness. The score was written by film composer, musician and author NATHAN LARSON (Boys Don't Cry, The Woodsman and The Messenger) and Fruit Bats' founder ERIC D. JOHNSON. Johnson contributed an alt incredibly cool version of "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree" to the lineup and Larson "Mellotron Melody." Another stand out is the infectious "Taking You With Me," a youthful alt country duet from MINDY SMITH and DANIEL TASHIAN written especially for the film. One of the Johnson-Larson tracks, "Cowboys and Hobos," features guest vocalist NINA PERSSON of the Swedish reared band THE CARDIGANS (whose offstage life includes being married to Larson). Check out "Lightning Bug," an unreleased track from Johnson's own FRUIT BATS and "Cool Yourself" by Thao with the Get Down Stay Down from their cult classic album Know Better Learn Faster. There's more: "When They Fight They Fight," from throwback popsters the Generationals and "The Things You Lost" from singer/tunesmith El May (aka Lara Meyerratken). Also included is CAROLE KING's Tapestry classic "Beautiful" as well as three offerings from the WILLIE NELSON canon: "Wonderful Future," "Midnight Rider" and "Ol' Blue."

Get Low ReviewI just saw Robert Duvall's latest film, so the music soundtrack has relevence. But even if I hadn't seen Get Low, I would have bought it anyway. It's that good.
The album is an atmospheric mix of old-time, classic country and original bluegrass music performed by the premiere artists of those genres. You may already know the work of Alison Krauss and Jerry Douglas, but if you've never heard The SteelDrivers before, this is your chance to be truly impressed by an exceptional bluegrass band. The gritty authenticity of lead singer Chris Stapleton's powerful voice will send chills up and down your spine.
More important, this nostalgic compilation reminds this former East Tennessean of some of the crusty individualists that still live in the mountains and hollers of Appalachia. Thus, I will play this album often, but especially when I'm headed back home.Get Low Overview

The Three Pickers (2003) ReviewI love concert DVDs, anyway, although they often leave me wishing I had been there. This one certainly does that, in spades. It has it all--first--the greatest pickers; second, great video and audio recording quality, and last, an appreciative and knowledgeable audience. Earl Scruggs finger picking the guitar on "Who Will Sing For Me" is not to be missed. Reminds me of those old black and white Flatt and Scruggs TV shows back in the early 60's I used to watch on Sunday night, when Earl would put down his banjo and accompany the group on their "sacred number" as Lester put it. If you want to hear more of him doing that, also buy the Flatt & Scruggs CD "The Complete Mercury Sessions". Great Stuff. The Three Pickers (2003) OverviewFor one memorable evening before a live audience, Earl Scruggs, Doc Watson and Ricky Skaggs joined forces as The Three Pickers. The music they made is as relaxed as a front porch picking session, highlighted by the skill of these three bluegrass masters.Includes: ?Earl?s Breakdown,? ?Walk on Boy,? ?Road to Spencer,? ?Pick Along,? ?Feast Here Tonight,? ?What Would You Give in Exchange For Your Soul?? ?Don?t Let Your Deal Go Down,? ?Who Will Sing for Me?? ?Soldier?s Joy,? ?What Is a Home Without Love??**, ?The Storms Are on the Ocean,? ?Down in the Valley to Pray,? ?The Banks of the Ohio,? ?John Hardy?**, ?Katy Hill,? ?Foggy Mountain Top,? ?Roll in My Sweet Baby?s Arms?** DVD-only bonus tracks

Down from the Mountain (The "O Brother, Where Art Thou" Concert) (2000) ReviewThis movie, part stage show and part local color with a good bit of nostalgia thrown in, is breathtaking, riveting, spellbinding, transcendent. It begins with a night tour of Nashville's exciting places; from the limo window we see Tootsie's, the Ryman Auditorium, Second Avenue, Lower Broadway. We share our ride with Ralph Stanley, who has "come down from the mountain." We spend time backstage at the Ryman while the performers are waiting their turns, and eavesdrop on John Hartford as he spins a tale about wanting to be a librarian. We listen to a couple of blues players talk about their work and discover that Emmylou Harris is a baseball fan. The show itself is country at its best. Rock and roll doesn't show its face; there are no gyrations or big hats or shrill voices. Just country, with memories of the Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers, and a plethora of old time musicians who sang of hard times and death and endurance. We will always remember Emmylou Harris's sweet, true voice, Allison Krause's melodic outpouring, and Gillian Welch's beautiful harmony. We'll remember the Peasall sisters and the Fairfield Four and Ralph Stanley; but most of all, we'll remember the magic moment when John Hartford began to sing "Big Rock Candy Mountain." It was one of his last performances before he succumbed to cancer, but his voice was steady and strong, and his hands sure on the violin. This was old time music as it should be, and even the newer songs sounded old. It reminds us of how far modern country music has strayed from its roots, and how easy and pleasant it is to go back to them again.Down from the Mountain (The "O Brother, Where Art Thou" Concert) (2000) OverviewOn May 24, 2000, the historic Ryman Auditorium was booked to offer Nashvillians an evening of sublime beauty. Label executives and soundtrack producers so loved the music of O Brother, Where Art Thou? that they brought it to life as a benefit concert for the Country Music Hall of Fame. Filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen loved it so much that they hired famed documentary filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker to record the show for posterity. The concert that unfolded that night was one of the greatest musical moments in the annals of Music City. Performers: John Hartford, Alison Krauss, Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch, Chris Thomas King, The Cox Family, Fairfield Four, Union Station, Colin Linden, The Nashville Bluegrass Band, The Peasall Sisters, Ralph Stanley, David Rawlings, The Whites. 98 minutes.

Live, Volume 3 (2010) ReviewFinally a live DVD from The Avett Brothers! Their shows are unmatched for their energy and intensity, and the music is absolutely amazing. They sound great, and they are a lot of fun to watch. Their best qualities are well represented here. It is, however, a bit short at 74 minutes. I would have loved the inclusion of Pretty Girl from Chile, Left on Laura Left on Lisa plus few other personal favorites.Live, Volume 3 (2010) Overview
