The Book of Pooh - Fun With Make Believe (2001) ReviewThis video is DREADFUL. It should NOT be sold under Manners. ONLY ONE of the four stories even REMOTELY relates to manners and it sends a confusing message with Piglet's asking Tigger to "Please stop saying 'please.'" The other three stories are irrelevant and time-wasters if you SERIOUSLY bought this video to teach any manners. Also, a child would have to be a good reader to understand the point of the second story about a confusing WRITTEN note left by Pooh. IT has nothing to do with manners, either. Thomas the Tank Engine And Friends - Make Someone Happy (2002) ReviewMy son - 3 yrs now - has enjoyed Thomas stories & videos for about 1.5 years. But I have to say I'm often torn ... these engines really are quite crabby & cranky & rude to each other. It all comes out in the wash, & everyone makes up in the end, but ... gee they're rude. And I spend a lot of time encouraging my little tyke NOT to be rude. To be kind & compassionate! So what's a mother to do?
It's interesting that now, he will not watch any of the story videos, prefering those with only songs. If a story comes on, he insists that we forward FAST to the next song. I guess he's also tired of the crabbing & back-biting! (Sounds awful, but they really do!)
These videos cannot be beaten for the sheer beauty of the world they create - can I PLEASE go live on the Island of Sodor?! I just wish the Rev. Awbrey (sp!) had made his engines a little kinder!Thomas the Tank Engine And Friends - Make Someone Happy (2002) Overview

Chillin' With Pingu ReviewWe got this DVD yesterday and sat down to watch it. My 5 year old laughed through a lot of the episodes. It's a better DVD than "Meet Pingu" but I would buy both. Some of the episodes show Pinga's birth and when she was a baby. There are 8 episodes in all. Plus there are 5 bonus HIT Entertainment episodes of other shows, such as "Angelina Ballerina" and "Rubber Dubbers" which is an animated show from the UK that is like Toy Story in the tub. A great value for the money and funny for all ages.Chillin' With Pingu Overview

James and the Giant Peach (Special Edition) (1996) ReviewRoald Dahl's modern classic tells the story of James, an orphan who is treated cruelly by his aunts, until one day a benevolent stranger gives him some magical crocodile tongues -- and then marvelous things begin to happen! With new friends, James discovers that he is resourceful and loyal. He learns to believe in himself and trust in others.
This terrific story is given the treatment it deserves by director Henry Selick and producer Tim Burton (who also made Nightmare Before Christmas together). Stop-motion, live action and special effects combine to bring this incredible story to life, and the effort is dazzling, even though the work is almost a decade old.
The dvd features are marginal at best. While it's nice to have the option of DTS or Dolby Digital sound, the other features do not merit calling this a special edition. You can hear the dialogue in English, French or Spanish, and subtitling is available in Spanish or for the hearing impaired. There is also a 4-1/2 minute featurette, a trailer and a Randy Newman music video. Still photos are categorized as Concept Art (9), Puppets (9), Behind-the-Scenes (36) or Live Action (18), and they can be seen as thumbprints or enlarged. There are trailers for NBX, Toy Story 2 and Lady and the Tramp 2. Menus are a bit clunky.

The Velveteen Rabbit (2007) Review"The Velveteen Rabbit", Margery William's 1922 story, is a classic in the annals of children's literature. I loved it as a child, and continue to adore it as a grown woman, and have since shared it with my own preschooler. Thus, when I saw this new release, I could not wait to watch it with my daughter.
Young Toby [Matthew Harbour] is sent to stay with his strict grandmother Ellen [Una Kay] when his serious father, John goes off on business to New York. Feeling abandoned and lonely, Toby explores the house and comes across the "Magic Room", which is filled with his father's old toys, including a rabbit stuffed toy. As Toby's imagination is given free rein, Rabbit comes 'alive' in a lively world of animation, and Toby together with rabbit and the other toys in the magic room run free and play in a lively dream world. The animals, i.e. Horse [Tom Skerritt], Swan [Ellen Burstyn], and Rabbit [Chandler Wakefiled] all dream of becoming real animals, and as we all know from "The Velveteen Rabbit", that can only be achieved by true love. Grandma Ellen and Toby soon bond, but his father John is still distant, and it takes a near tragedy to set things right.
A mixture of animated sequences and live-action, this movie appealed to my family. Though the original story has been adapted here, I felt that the adaptation doesn't stray too far from the original message of love overcoming all obstacles.Purists may not appreciate this adaptation, but those seeking family-friendly entertainment will love it.
