Show & Tell (2010) ReviewThis DVD is a must have for any fan of The Birthday Massacre, regardless of if you've seen them live already or not. The video quality is pretty decent, and their performance is always so beautiful, energetic and artistic. Chibi (the lead singer) is always so adorable with her behavior on stage, this DVD really brings out the personality in every band member. I even found myself clapping along when Chibi would do it as if I were actually participating in the audience. Chibi's was on top of her game the night this was filmed and her voice sounds wonderful.
What they don't tell you for some (stupid) reason is that this video is TWO CONCERTS! haha. They're selling it as one, just the live one in Germany, but in the bonus features section, the entire M'era Luna performance of 2005 is in there! I don't know why its just considered a bonus feature, I think they'd sell more if they actually told people. Maybe its supposed to be a surprise to the fans buying the DVD and i'm currently spoiling their fun (Sorry if I am, TBM). The M'era Luna performance is really cool too because its in the daytime outside, so on an HDTV it looks WAY cooler than the Germany night time main performance this DVD has. There is also a little bonus feature of an interview with TBM on the DVD, and they actually said "we didn't even know this was going to be a DVD, we were surprised" which means this concert is raw, real TBM. They didn't go on stage that night with the intent to show off for the DVD, which makes it even more special. It shows that this is how all TBM shows are. High energy, beautifully artistic, and wonderfully executed.
I'd also like to add that the people who filmed and edited the DVD did a great job. It's not just a still shot of their concert. Sometimes the camera will kind of go into "slow motion" and turn certain ways with different camera effects, it makes it really fun to watch. It gives the concert even more depth and makes it very unique. Some shots you'll feel like you're literally on stage with them probably tripping over all their cords (hoping you wont break anything since they have so much electronic equipment and stuff on their stage haha), then all of a sudden you'll be in the back of the audience seeing a view of all of the action.
Seriously, even if you don't have any idea who The Birthday Massacre are, just still buy it. Take yourself on a wonderful audio/video journey just because its an experience you'll never forget.Show & Tell (2010) Overview

Nosferatu: The Gothic Industrial Mix (1922) ReviewNosferatu is one of the first two horror movies I ever bought. I still have that videotape, with a soundtrack by Clubfoot Orchestra.
It's a great movie with some images that are still pretty haunting, if not quite scary, today. The best DVDs in terms of image quality and extras for NTSC Region 1 are probably the ones by Kino and by Image.
As silent movie aficionados say, silent movies weren't really "silent," having pretty much always been accompanied by an organist or small orchestra. To this day there are still revivals of Nosferatu with live accompaniment, particularly around Halloween.
It can be interesting to listen to different musicians' ideas of what appropriate accompaniment might be. Apart from the various videotape and DVD releases of Nosferatu, which usually feature some sort of original score (though occasionally with "canned" classical music haphazardly applied), a number of artists have recorded soundtracks for Nosferatu which they have released separately. You would have to synchronize the audiocassette or CD with your videotape or film of the movie. I remember seeing some reviewed and/or advertised in the music magazine Alternative Press.
The first version of it I had watched that had a gothic music soundtrack was the DVD Nosferatu: The First Vampire with music by Type O-Negative. It's not bad. I just watched this one, Nosferatu: A Gothic Industrial Mix (Nosferatu: A Tale of Gothic Horror as the opening titles have it) with "music by Rozz Williams of Christian Death and Electric Hellfire Club." Again, not bad. I'm not very familiar with gothic music. Stylistically, it can vary pretty widely, sounding similar to rock, or techno, or heavy metal, etc. The music for the "Gothic Industrial Mix" is more what I would describe as ambient. Most of it is pretty relaxing music one could fall asleep to, if so inclined. Though primarily instrumental, occasionally there are voices as either vocals or vocal samples.
Cleopatra Home Video did add opening and end titles to the movie. The intertitles (aka title cards) are not theirs, but are from whatever print of the film they used. Curiously, their opening titles give the actors' names beside the character names from the original German version (Count Orlok, Hutter, Knock, etc.). However, the DVD rear box cover and the intertitles use the names of the characters from Bram Stoker's novel Dracula, of which this was an unauthorized adaptation. Those intertitles originate evidently with an American re-release of Nosferatu, but how long ago they were created, I'm not sure - but Cleopatra is not at fault for them.
The print of the film used is not bad, probably on par with other inexpensive public domain releases of the movie. It features the usual faults, such as the top of Nosferatu's head being cropped off when he stands bolt upright in his coffin.
The DVD has no extras except for a chapter selection. As with a number of DVDs whose menus feature only two options ("play movie" and "scene selection"), the selected option is a different color than the deselected one. However, unless you know which color is the color used for highlighting, it's impossible to know which is selected! In such cases, it's better to have an icon appear next to the selected option.Nosferatu: The Gothic Industrial Mix (1922) Overview

The Hunger (1983) ReviewI saw 'The Hunger' when it was in the movie theatre in 1983. I didn't know what to expect but David Bowie's presence in the film made me go into the theatre.Esthetics! Esthetics! Esthetics! Beautiful people, beautiful set, beautiful music wrapped into the warm womb of blood sucking and immortality and escapism. The storyline doesn't move me, though every performance is stellar. I never develop any empathy for the characters, though I would like to sit down and have lunch with them (on the condition I'm not on the desert menu.)This is the kind of film one might call a guilty pleasure. No social or intellectual message or value, but imprints itself upon the emotional psyche. It provides a window into another side of one's usual self. Do I believe in vampires and the creature feature scifi world, no. But it can be fun.The dvd quality is excellent. Much better transfer than the video we've had all these years. Really glad it's available and in our film library. Enjoy this world where beauty and pointlessness meet for no other reason than to entertain you.The Hunger (1983) OverviewHUNGER - DVD Movie
