Live Facelift (1991) ReviewAs of 2002, in the wake of Jerry Cantrell's continuing solo career, Sean Kinney and Mike Inez's new band, Mike Starr's book, and Layne Staley's endless drug problems, it is clear that Alice in Chains is history. It's a shame, considering their music was the most personal and harrowing of the Seattle Big Four. Even worse is the fact that music "historians" will center the grunge movement around Nirvana and Pearl Jam in years to come.
That being said, there's no denying what a devastating band Alice was. Thus, this video is an absolutely essential addition to even the most casual Alice fan. The video is even more essential since the band has not launched a proper tour since 1993, and half-hearted performing and Staley?s increasingly frail singing voice highlighted their final live performances in 1996.
Live Facelift captures the band in all their glory, showing how powerful the band was in their younger days, before drug addiction put serious limitations on the band's capabilities. Staley's voice is in full force in this video, and Cantrell's guitar playing is among his most expressive.
Unfortunately the performance is far too short (the band only knocks out about 5 songs on stage, followed by 3 music videos), and the black and white provides a rather grainy quality on what is an otherwise exceptional live performance. The video also could've benefited from some backstage features, as anyone who has seen the Nona Tapes knows that behind the drug-addled music lies a band with a huge sense of humor.
All in all, Live Facelift is a must-have for Alice fans, an essential footnote in the career of a band that was probably Seattle's most unfulfilled talent.Live Facelift (1991) Overview

The Corrs - The Best of The Corrs: The Videos ReviewThe Corrs are an international phenomenon that have sold multi-million units of recordings all over the world. In these modern "MTV" times, videos of an artist's singles are routinely made to promote the song on the various music TV channels around the world, and The Corrs have been no exception to this practice. The photogenic foursome have made quite a number of videos for their singles over the past eight years, and those of us who live in the US have been deprived of nearly all of them! Since The Corrs haven't yet become quite the "phenomenon" in the States, our music channels have chosen to pretty much ignore them, while the rest of the world has seen these videos over and over again. As a result, this collection, just released here in Region 1 through our Canadian neighbors to the north, is an absolute MUST for all American Corrs fans. From their earliest professionally made video, "Runaway" through to their most recent, a collaboration with Spanish artist Alejandro Sanz on "One Night", this collection gives the American fan just what he or she has always wanted -- a professionally made DVD with all of The Corrs videos in one place. Prior to this, fans had to download grainy, jumpy videos on the web to see their favorite group in action, but now we can enjoy them in all of their glory on this wonderful DVD. All eighteen tracks are presented in stereo, with six of them additionally mixed and presented with Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. The DVD also features an image gallery with pictures of the band and photos of tickets, passes, and posters from many of their landmark concerts. The Corrs - The Best of The Corrs: The Videos Overview

Faithless: Live at Alexandra Palace (2005) ReviewContray to what Still Remains to be seen Printed Above,,, This DVD Is NOT: "NTSC"!; IT IS NOT Playable In All Of North-America [Not Even The Audio!]!. This Is In "PAL" Format, instead; the Screen-Resolution used/needed for Europe/UK/EU. -And I Should Know!:,,, *(Amazon-Customer-Service Tricked me the 2nd-Time, when I eMail-Asked Them Specifically--->RE: 'PAL' -or- 'NTSC'). They said: "NTSC",,, So I Bought Another One, and now I have two (2) of these things and neither one works and I'm stuck with 'em (having opened the Seals). So I don't know why Faithless Won't/(Can't?) Release an "NTSC"-Version for The USA,,, but what I REALLYREALLY Don't understand is: Why Amazon keeps insisting on Posting a [Crucially] IN-Accurate Description of this Item, and Continues Pawning them off to USA, As If: They'll Play in the USA - And They WON'T! *I REPEAT!>>>THIS DVD WILL NOT PLAY IN THE USA AT ALL!!! EVER!!!
*Otherwise, from what Other (so-called) "Black-Market" Video-Performances that I have seen of Faithless,,, I Have No doubt that this DVD Would Have 'Normally' Been an Excellent, 5-Star Performance!; but I'm only giving it One (1) Star, maybe to get the attention of somebody that cares! *[This DVD Should actually get LESS than a Star, because it is a Non-Working-Item in the USA].
We (The USA) LOVE Faithless,,, and I alledge this is Amazon.com Opportunistic Abuse, and Mis-Representation, which is Against The Law, by the way!

Roots Rock Reggae - Inside the Jamaican Music Scene (1977) ReviewAnyone who is interested in roots reggae and dub will absolutely flip out over this documentary. Filmed in 1977, an incredibly important year in Jamaica, it covers the music/culture/politics of Jamaica (mostly music though). With unforgettable moments- like entering Lee "Scratch" Perry's BlackArk studio while the Heptones are recording. Then there's the late great Jacob Miller, in underwear, working out a song with the InnerCircle. The Gladiators recording, Mighty Diamonds live, and Joe Gibbs sings a beautiful trenchtown song. Get the idea? This is hugely important to anyone who loves this excellent music. The narration is also insightful and there are many scenes which capture tranchtown and the hard life of Jamaica.
This DVD is an absolute must-have for anyone who loves reggae. The picture and sound quality are totally fine, especially considering this was a small documentary that was probably made with very little money. I am sure that the DVD transfer was as good as it could be (and it's perfectly fine).
One side-note to reviewers that complain about the picture/sound- this was a small project in 1977, this is not Star Wars or Terminator. Don't have some ridiculous expectation that everything has to be up to the level of a big-budget hollywood blockbuster Ultimate edition DVD. It seems that reviewers all over Amazon like to complain too much about picture/sound quality. I personally own hundreds of DVDs and find that many complaints i've read are just flat-out wrong. I think people just feel the need to complain about something, but don't let them fool you.Roots Rock Reggae - Inside the Jamaican Music Scene (1977) OverviewRoots, Rock, Reggae presents a street-level perspective on the reggae music scene during a very important period in the evolution of reggae music. In the late 1970s, police and thieves battled in the street, politicians struggled for power and reggae musicians fought for peoples' souls. Featuring performances by seminal reggae greats from Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff to the Abyssinians and Jacob Miller, this is the only documentary on the evolution of reggae and a must for reggae's legions of fans. 60minutes.

Lang Lang Live in Vienna (2010) ReviewVideo quality is of course fine, but for my taste too many cuts. Another director that got his training at MTV. Each take on average 3 seconds, with shorter takes in the beginning and longer takes towards the end. He learnt a bit or got tired himself. Overhead shots were not good enough but needed to spin, too. Your taste may differ.
I listened to the surround track of the concert (5.1 DTS-HD) and it is not that great, either. Little use of the side channels and the piano sounds not as full as it does on other recordings I have.
Normally, I don't watch the bonus program (here excerpts of the same pieces played in the Berghain club, but recorded in 3-D for a future release, sound is 5.0 DTS-HD), but someone had mentioned the different acoustics, so I checked it out. Low and behold, that sound is much better.
I don't think it's the acoustic of the room, but the microphones and the placement. In the concert, there are 4 microphones, 2 at the narrow end of the piano (which I believe don't do much for the sound) and 2 in front, very close to the piano, about piano high. In the club, there are 3 different microphones in front of the piano, about 3 feet apart from each other and about 15 feet away from the piano. Different audio technicians/directors too.
So this disc turns out to be an example of how different the sound can be based on who does it and how it is done (good or not so good). The Berghain guys did a better job and the bonus material sounds better than the concert.
"Jundi Li in Baden-Baden" sounds in concert just as good as Lang Lang in the club, DTS 5.1
The Verbier Festival Piano Extravaganza is much better recorded as far as surround sound is concerned.
So Lang Lang 5 stars, audio 3 starsLang Lang Live in Vienna (2010) Overview

Glenn Gould - The Alchemist (2002) ReviewThis DVD is a great work of art. Here you are brought into incredible performances of Bach, Skriabin, Schoenberg, Berg, Webern and more. Even if you are not so familiar with 20th century music, you should get this and listen how also atonality can be incredibly musical and full of emotions. Very few artists can do that with this repertoire and (IMHO) they all owed it to Gould. Musical heaven at its peak, nothing else. The conversations are not too long and are some of the most inspiring music talks I have listen to in my 35 years of making music as a professional musician and a composer. Enjoy!Glenn Gould - The Alchemist (2002) Overview

In the Zone (+ Bonus CD) (2003) ReviewBeing the massive Britney Spears fan that I am, I knew straight away that I had to own this DVD. It was just released in the UK two days ago, and I bought it on the day it was released, which was also two days after one of the greatest nights of my life. You see, on Saturday May 1st 2004 I travelled to Manchester in England to see Britney Spears live on part of her Onyx Hotel Tour that is currently sweeping the world! My voice is gradually returning, but losing it (along with my head) was worth it just to see her up close! Currently on a Spears-high, this DVD was my most essential purchase for quite a few weeks, and I am very happy with it, not only because it contains so many brilliant features, but because it is a perfect addition to any true fans' collection!
People have complained that all the material on this DVD has already been on TV countless times before, but not everyone lives in America (I don't), so most of the stuff on here was new to me. The DVD cover is the same as the multi-platinum No.1 album "In The Zone," and this instantly makes the two sort of companions to each other. The first feature on the DVD is probably the best of the lot. It's the ABC Television Special - "Britney Spears: In The Zone" which was broadcast across America on the eve of the release of Britney's fourth album. In an intimate setting Britney performs to some of her biggest fans. She sings "Toxic," "Breathe On Me," "Boys/I'm A Slave 4 U," "(I Got That) Boom Boom," "Everytime," "...Baby One More Time" and "Me Against The Music." Seven great songs there, seven great performances. Woven in-between these performances are some brilliant clips of Britney during the recording process of the album. The best one for me is where Britney is in a Taxi and feeling free for the first time in a while - you can see tears in her eyes too. Very sweet!
After this fantastic feature, we move on to MTV's "Spankin New Music Week On TRL" Times Square Performance. This is yet another brilliant feature because we get to see one of Britney's first public performances of 2003 after her year-long hiatus. She sings "Me Against The Music" and "(I Got That) Boom Boom" featuring Ying Yang Twins Live. Both performances are brilliant and her pants are so cool! And her hat! After this, we move onto the full-length video to "Me Against The Music" featuring Madonna. This really is one of Britney's greatest music videos to date and was very pricey too! Two icons duetting on one spectacular, dance-tastic smash hit is a feast for the eyes! Everyone has seen this video a million times, though!
We then move onto a really cool feature, which is MTV's "Making The Video" for "Toxic." This has been shown before, but it's nice to finally own it for yourself. We see the brilliant production of Britney's true comeback song and we also see a really funny and charismatic superstar at the centre. The best bits are when Britney watches her old "Making The Video" series from years past, and when she breaks the plunger that she uses to climb up the wall, especially when she claims, "I am SO strong!" She's so sweet. Then of course we get the full video to "Toxic," which is absolutely spectacular! If this doesn't win multiple VMA's in August/September later on this year, there's something wrong! This is the song that has rightfully put Britney back on top in 2004 as the world's biggest superstar! A massive No.1 all over the world and one of the biggest radio hits of the past year has made this already an anthemic, classic pop tune. We then get "In The Personal Zone" which is a fantastic documentary in which Britney reveals all on Inspiration, Spirituality, ABC Special, Onyx Hotel Tour, TRL Performance and Toxic. We also get a really sexy photo gallery of Britney!
Also includes along with this DVD is a four-track Bonus CD. I have the UK Region 2 DVD version of this, so the two main songs I have are "I've Just Begun (Having My Fun)" and "Girls And Boys." However, as an American purchaser you get "The Answer" and "Don't Hang Up," which are two brilliant songs (the former R'n'B, the latter Dance) that feature on my version of the In The Zone album! Very confusing indeed, but there's also two fantastic remixes included! These are "Toxic (Lenny Bertoldo's Radio Mix)" and "Me Against The Music (Bloodshy & Avant's Chix Mix)." I personally prefer the Toxic remix, but the remix of Me Against The Music isn't bad either!
OVERALL GRADE: 10/10
In the past we've received some brilliant Britney Spears DVD's. We've had "Time Out With Britney" and "Live And More!" which were both superb. We then had the rather disappointing "Britney: The Videos," followed by the amazing "Britney Spears: Live From Las Vegas" and "Crossroads." Of course, there was the brilliant DVD included with the book Stages that followed Britney around on the Mexican leg of her Dream Within A Dream Tour of 2002. I have to say though, that "In The Zone" is the best DVD/video that Britney has released to date! I suggest that if you're a big Britney fan you buy this straight away, you won't regret it!In the Zone (+ Bonus CD) (2003) OverviewIN THE ZONE - DVD Movie

Abba - In Concert 1979 ReviewHey, fellow ABBA fans, let's relax a little bit! You're being WAY too hard on this DVD. Remember it's a 25 year old DOCUMENTARY, not a concert, and it was shot by a network that didn't religiously archive the footage because nobody at the time expected people 25 years later to care! There's plenty of full length numbers, and they rip! Having been lucky enough to have seen ABBA at the Music Hall in Boston during this tour (as did most of Aerosmith, the Cars and the J. Giels Band down in the front rows), I'm delighted now to own this DVD because it proves a point I've long tried to make to my sceptical friends. ABBA WERE UNDENIABLY A GREAT, GREAT LIVE ACT.
I've been professionally involved in the concert business for three decades, I've seen everyone pretty much, and though my personal tastes run more towards The Beatles, The Cramps and Garbage, I rank ABBA as one of the best live bands I've EVER seen on a stage. The vocals were spot on, the band rocked and were very tight, the energy level was through the roof. The group, especially Frida and Agnetha, were very lively, generous and vivacious with the audience, and the songs were just great. Frankly, it was an incredible, indescribable rush to see them live, especially if you'd waited five years for it.
For ages ABBA have been a guilty pleasure for those of us supposedly hip rockers, but unless you're a frigid snob you'll have to admit upon viewing this show that ABBA weren't a corny plastic disco machine - they absolutely delivered the goods. A totally legitimate act with nothing to apologize for. What's also great is that ABBA were based not just on unforgettable hook-laden songs and astounding voices, but there was a genuinely warm and mature sexuality exuding from that stage. Agnetha and Frida were women, not little girls. There bodies may not have been perfect (J-LO fans, you'll see a startling similarity between she and Agnetha in a certain way) but their talent and their sensuality knocks Britney's lip synced teasing schoolgirl trip right off the stage. ABBA actually sang every note live, mistakes and all - what a concept.
As to the extras, "Thank You For The Music" is probably my least favorite ABBA song, but on this disc Agnetha is just incredible, she nails it. Frida was the darker, more european side of things, handling more mature themes, and my fave, but if God ever put a more attractive woman on a stage than Agnetha in this film, I've never seen her. As to the sound complaints, if you run the disc through a good amplifier and speaker system there's no problem, if not some of the bottom is admittedly missing. But on the plus side the clarity of the vocals is astonishing, and within the instrumentation lots of little surprises I'd never heard.
Visually it's incredible - you can count eyelashes and pores, and the color is rich and true. So c'mon - lighten up everyone - a very well directed documentary, a very well edited piece of history at a pretty low price. It's a great disc of a truly brilliant band. Let's be happy for a very nice little gift to us all.Abba - In Concert 1979 OverviewItem Name: Abba - In Concert 1979; Studio:Polydor / Umgd

Playing For Change: Peace Through Music (2009) ReviewI saw this program on PBS. I woke up in the middle of the night and it was on. If you are a lover of music of all kinds, you will absolutely love this DVD. These men actually traveled around the complete world in a year and recorded and dubbed etc. Not only that, they had to meet these musicians and regular people and adapt to their beliefs and cultures in order to gain their confidence so that they would be accepted and allowed to tape the different talents of singing and playing all types of instruments. Very well done and I applaud them!!! Buy this DVD; it will be one of the best investments ever. Journey - Live in Houston 1981, The Escape Tour (1981) ReviewJourney's Escape Tour came to the Cleveland Coliseum just a few weeks after my 14th birthday. I had no car, no money and parents who suspected that things went on at rock concerts that they had to protect me from. It seemed like the entire neighborhood was going, and at school it was the only thing anyone talked about for the next week. The girls all had magazine pictures of Steve Perry taped inside their lockers.
All I had to sustain me was the "Escape" album in LP vinyl, and my friends and I literally wore it out over the next several years, with all of us coming of age in what seemed like months, all to the soundtrack of Journey and a few other bands. By the time the "Frontiers" tour came to town, I was old enough to go but I had moved on to other bands, and besides we all sensed that "Escape" had been the pinnacle, and that Journey was morphing into a band for girls.
So I am grateful beyond words that MTV happened to capture this night in Houston with such high quality video and sound. The band is simply at their technical and spiritual peak, and they are riding a wave of unbelievable power since, as Steve Perry mentions during the concert, the "Escape" album had gone number one just three weeks earlier.
Disco had ended, Progressive was still coming, MTV had arrived but hadn't figured out quite what it was yet, and Journey was the biggest thing in America in 1981. This DVD captures that moment, and what's truly amazing for us rock connoisseurs is how sparse and basic their stage show is here. The musicians stand on stage with their gear, they blow our minds out with their playing, Steve Perry runs around and some primitive pyros explode at the beginning and the end, and aside from that, pretty much nothing else happens except that everyone in the audience goes nuts and most of the girls probably wet their pants. It's a basic, fundamental, unbelievably well played and well sung rock concert by a band that was on the rocket ride they had worked towards for years.
If you missed this concert too, this DVD will almost make up for it. It certainly stands up to time, and they play and sound better than you would think was humanly possible.Journey - Live in Houston 1981, The Escape Tour (1981) OverviewJOURNEY:LIVE IN HOUSTON 1981 THE ESCA - DVD Movie

Simply Red - Home (Live in Sicily) ReviewWatch the short interview with frontman Mick Hucknall's brief introduction to his latest live and career direction before you start on the show. You can easily relate comfortness and confidence to the established singer who hasn't lost the originality of his credit for the band yet still going creative from one album to another.
HOME LIVE IN SICILY is all about relax, be honest and offer the audience a great night to remember how the band had written so many beautiful songs in 2 decades to enchant the life of any ordinary people.
The opening track SOMEDAY IN MY LIFE is an Italian rendering of the original version, appropriately dedicated to the full, passionate Sicilian crowd. Dressed casually in a simple white short sleeved shirt with jeans may he had, Hucknall never slipped by any number of songs casually in the entire show. The Stylistic's YOU MAKE ME FEEL BRAND NEW is Hucknall's serious singing with energetic vocal power. Nonstop uptempo session of FAKE, THRILL ME to SOMETHING GOT ME STARTED reminds us the New Romantic band has still got what it takes to groove up the dance floor. At the end, FAIRGROUND and SUNRISE left the seemingly solemn audience in front seats all shake and twist themselves with anticipation to the funky live jazz music.
The bonus feature of this DVD is that it provides users 2 choices of viewing angle on the entire run of the concert, on condition than one's player is equipped with the angle function. Users can swop between the multi angle and the upfront angle on Hucknall (called Mick Cam here) any moment throughout the show.
For the fans who discovered Simply Red in early 90's till late, this DVD is fulfilling and worth collecting indeed.Simply Red - Home (Live in Sicily) Overview
