Perceval (1996) ReviewEric Rohmer's "Perceval" is one of the most stunning films I've ever seen. Based on Chretien de Troyes' unfinished story, this movie is amazing. The scenery and acting are exquisitely stylized, and the story is presented in a blend of medieval-style song, dialog, and narration--all in Old French. It's like watching a medieval pageant come to life. Rohmer's adaptation is remarkably faithful to Chretien's story. I particularly adored the film's depiction of the episode of Gawain and the Damsel of the Small Sleeves--the girl in the film is splendid. Fabrice Luchini portrays Perceval perfectly--naive, callow, youthfully self-centered and determined. I can't praise this film highly enough. If you love the romances of Chretien, this is a must-see. I wish Rohmer had done "The Knight of the Cart," too...Perceval (1996) Overview

Treasure Island Kids: The Pirates of Treasure Island (2007) ReviewA clever tale for kids of all ages, filled with adventure, suspense, and a wackiness that only Moe, Larry, and Curly could match! Randy Quaid is great as the snarling pirate! yaaaarrr!Treasure Island Kids: The Pirates of Treasure Island (2007) Overview

The Thorn Birds ReviewFINALLY, a soundtrack is released!!!! How extraordinary!
YES YES YES YES, I agree with most of the critics written here, the quality of this soundtrack is exceptionnal. They did a fantastic job remastering the music score, and the stereo effect is astonishing (you must listen to the soundtrack with your headphones at least once, it's worth it, you will really get the dept of the sound).
And... after having discussed with a few people, I came to the conclusion that back in 1983, Mancini decided to record the soundtrack not with an orchestra, all at once, as usual. Nope, for the Thorn Birds, it seems he recorded the instrument groups individually, on different tracks, and he mixed them afterwards. Maybe he wanted to get the best out of every musicians? Personnaly, that's perfection. You may have noticed there is no orchestra mentionned on the CD...
The sad thing is that it seems the people who remastered the original soundtrack for the CD ommited (or lost?) some instruments during the final mix. The dulcimer that was suppose to play the main title theme of the very first track is indeed missing (yes yes it IS missing, i compared it to the opening credits from the DVDs), and the guitar seemed to have been filtered through something, it's not as clear as the original (as if they "cleaned" it too much!). Also, they ommited the dulcimer in the track "Drogheda" (track 3), where it was supposed to start the score, for the first 15 seconds (on the CD you only get the background music, guitar and harp). And... I've also noticed on the track 'Vacation's End', compared to the original score on the miniserie, there was suppose to be an electronic harpischord taking over the violins at 1 min 52 sec for a line or two. It's missing...
It's too bad... but hey... what can we do. Besides these little mistakes, I believe this music is still one of the greatest score I ever heard.
Besides, I would have like to get a few more scores : the piano when Ralph sees Meggy for the first time at the train station, or when he sees Meggy slowly coming down the stairs at Mary's birthday party... a few scores are missing from the CD... maybe they could give us a 'bonus' CD with new scores and the ones that were not mix proprely on this soundtrack CD set? That would be fantastic. Just a thought...The Thorn Birds Overview

Tarzan - The Broadway Musical (Original Broadway Cast) ReviewFirst of all, I have to say that I love the movie soundtrack. Ironically, the movie songs here are by far the best ones. And, surprisingly enough, Tarzan's singing (Josh Strickland) is the strongest. Kerchak's (sp?) voice is plain annoying and Jane sounds like a past-her-prime Julie Andrews. Frankly, I'm disappointed with the voices of the cast.Tarzan - The Broadway Musical (Original Broadway Cast) Overview

Tom and Jerry: Spotlight Collection, Vol. 1-3 (1946) ReviewJust to clarify, so that anyone considering this three-volume collection will have ALL of the relevant info in making their purchase decision: Reviewer K. Echols "kyle" is correct in stating that the included cartoons are unedited (...well, except for a few minor points and some aspect ratio issues); but what he fails to mention (and is perhaps just unaware of) is that the Tom and Jerry Hanna Barbera Spotlight Collection IS in fact censored in the sense that two of the T&J HB cartoons, "Mouse Cleaning" and "Casanova Cat," are omitted from the collection altogether. Warner Brothers issued a statement about why they chose to omit those two cartoons; that statement is posted in the reviews for Volume 3 if you'd like to read it.
Also, WB did initially ship Volumes 1 and 2 with some edited cartoons--not EVERY controversial cartoon on those two volumes was in edited version, but SOME of them. (Using the edited versions was however a mistake, not WB's intention, in those first two volumes.) To correct the problem, WB established an 800 # and gave away free replacement discs. I don't know whether the versions of those two volumes that you'd get if you bought today would have the edited or the corrected discs (although I would like to assume the latter, if WB is being responsible).
It's entirely possible that those who are less intimately acquainted with the original versions of these T&J cartoons wouldn't even be aware of the edits in Volumes 1 and 2--and many people may not be bothered by the edits anyway, which is fine. But if you think you got the edited versions and that's NOT what you want, you might see if WB is still running the free replacement program; contact details are in the "Comments" that go along with my review of Volume 3. Also, you need to be aware that the replacement program is ONLY for Volumes 1 and 2--there is NO replacement program from WB to give you the "Mouse Cleaning" and "Casanova Cat" cartoons that were omitted from Volume 3--and there never will be, if WB stays true to what they've stated. (If you're not sure whether you're looking at edited versions or not and would like to know, just Google "Tom Jerry Spotlight Collection"--you won't have any problem finding articles that detail all of the edits.)
I'm not telling anyone to avoid buying these sets. They're great for what they do have in them. But any review that represents this three-volume collection as "uncensored" and "untouched" simply isn't accurate; and I'd prefer that folks have access to ALL of the facts when they're choosing whether or not to lay out their money.

Pippi Longstocking (2005) ReviewWhen I was little I loved the Pippi Longstocking movies (in Germany), now my kids love them. Since they're educated trilingual we have the series in German, Dutch and English. The truest one seems to be the German version (well, the movies were a German/Swedish production), the Dutch is pretty good too, although some of the voices are far too squeeky. The English version is well translated but edited a lot and even put together in another order! Still, Pippi rules. And a lot better than some Powerpuff girls or Little Ponies!Pippi Longstocking (2005) OverviewItem Name: Pippi Longstocking; Studio:Henstooth Video
