The Dancing Pumpkin ReviewWe bought this on video back in 2003 and for whatever reason it is a family favorite every Halloween. The Skeletons are some of the best characters around! The animation is not great, but it is very entertaining and the story is straight forward halloween adventure. The 2007 DVD we have is dark in viewing at times and the added scene of the dancing contest was new and not necessary. If fact the dancing pumpkin story is great without that part. I still like it and recommend it.The Dancing Pumpkin OverviewAward Winning Family Entertainment! One magical night, four children discover that the jack-o'-lantern on their doorstep is alive and a brilliant tap dancer. The children befriend the charismatic pumpkin, and set out on a thrilling adventure to stop the evil ogre, Finkgrinder, from his mission to hurt people. Here are the stories:
-Edward the really useful engines
-Thomas and the avalanche
-Missing Freight cars
-Mud Glorious Mud (my son loves this - mud AND construction)
-A friend in need
-Edward, Trevor and the really useful Party

Thomas & Friends: Team Up With Thomas ReviewAs a family, we have been watching Thomas shows since he was on Shining Time Station back in the 1980s. We have enjoyed listening to Ringo Starr, George Carlin, Alec Baldwin and Pierce Brosnan reading the stories and doing all the voices. However, nothing had prepared us for this one! On this DVD, the characters are all computer animated! It says nothing about it on the DVD package! I have heard people say they bought The Great Discovery or the theatrical movie because they heard that the trains' mouths move in those shows. THIS is the one you're looking for, folks! Our older children found it "weird", and I admit that it was a little disconcerting after all these years (and I still think Sir Topham Hatt doesn't look right), but our youngest son absolutely loves it, and that's all that matters!Thomas & Friends: Team Up With Thomas Overview

Animals Are Beautiful People (1974) ReviewThis documentary is covers the wildlife of Southern Africa. The animals are introduced in a very entertaining way, with a story about each that kids can really relate to eg the duck who pretends to be injured to distract the hyena away from her babies, the daddy ostrich protecting his eggs, the chimps who cartwheel down the hill, the fish who swallows her young to keep them safe. Along the way there is footage of other animals who are just interesting to look at. The photography is often stunning and the classical music score fits it well. The pace is quite quick, which is good as it holds a child's attention.
I bought this DVD for my five year old son because I remember seeing and loving the movie as a child. I wasn't sure how the movie would have aged, but it still looks pretty good. Now that I'm older I can spot flaws that I missed as a child - scenes that have clearly been set up by the filmmakers or edited together from different pieces of footage. This doesn't detract from its appeal as a family movie.
If you're a wildlife purist who is after a serious documentary, this isn't for you. But if you want an entertaining introduction to African wildlife, it's perfect. The reviewer who complains about the way that clouds are personalised is missing the point - this is a film that speaks to a child's imagination. My son loves it, although some of it is over his head and I can tell he'll get more out of it when he's a couple of years older. Nevertheless, I'm happy to have weaned him off Nick Jnr for a while!Animals Are Beautiful People (1974) OverviewFrom the creator of The Gods Must Be Crazy. Away in their own mysterious world, far from the prying eyes of people, Africa's animals lead lives of humor and horror, danger and dignity.

The Wiggles: Wiggle Time (2007) ReviewWe saw the "Quack Quack" song on the beginning of a Barney movie and loved it so much I purchased this video. It's terrific! My 16-month old daughter loves it and so does the rest of the family (my 7 year old daughter, my husband and I). She dances and claps and says "Baw" everytime the ball comes on between songs. I find myself singing or humming the tunes even when the movie is over - they are very catchy and a nice change to the Barney songs I've heard a billion times in the last 7 years (not that we don't like Barney too)! I will enjoy watching my daughter grow with this tape and learn to follow along with the dance steps and songs. She has already learned how to do the quack, quack and cocka-doodle-doo motions from the repetition at the beginning of the Barney movie. It's too cute! I HIGHLY recommend this for young children of all ages. I'm sure it would be great in a daycare setting too - the more the merrier! The Wiggles: Wiggle Time (2007) OverviewHey everyone! Walt Disney Treasures - Silly Symphonies (1936) ReviewBefore I obtained this DVD set, I had high expectations. I had seen some of the Mickey Mouse In Living Color set, and was enthrolled at the gorgeous color and clearity of the pictures. Not to mention sound with no hiss or other pollutants. The Silly Symphony DVD set did not disappoint.
It is not my intent to author a history of Disney animation. However, a few facts will lead to a greater appreciation of this set. Disney started in the 20's with a character named Alice, that later developed into Mickey Mouse. Cartoons were all in b/w, and animation not as refined as in the 30s and 40s. From 1924 through 1926, Disney produced only Alice shorts. (Now THERE would be some real TREASURES if Disney ever released these toons! They've never been released commercially!) In 1927 and 28, Disney changed his primary character to Oswald, the Lucky Rabbit. These have also never been released. As 1929 drew to a close, other studios began releasing musical shorts - remember that sound with image only began in 1927 - and Walt was under pressure to produce a new product for theaters. One with color and sound. The Silly Symphony was born. Essentially, that's what Silly Symphonies are. They are a cartoon story to a musical soundtrack with almost no dialogue or verbal exchange.
The first Silly Symphonies were composed of simple themes - in fact, there were a set produced that dealt only with the seasons: Springtime and Summer came out in 1930, Fall and Winter came out in 1931. Other titles were Arctic Antics, Frolicking Fish and Monkey Melodies. The animation was nice, but the themes were simple. In 1931 as audiences tired of these simple themes, Disney had to produce something new again, so began the fairy tale editions of Silly Symphonies. Some of these ended up being the studio's best work! By the mid 30's Disney was also doing purely artistic shorts which were somewhat abstract, culminating in a short, not on the DVD, (ouch!) called Toot, Whistle, Plunk and Boom, about musical instruments coming to life in a totally Salvador Dali-like surreal backdrop.
The Disney Treasures DVD focuses on several academy award winners (such as The Old Mill) and the fairy tale/story based Silly Symphonies. Many of Disney's finest efforts are included, such as the Tortoise and the Hare, The Grasshopper and the Ants, Three Little Pigs, 1929's Skeleton Dance, Flowers and Trees, Woodland Cafe, Music Land, and Disney's most lavish Symphony, Wynken Blynken and Nod. The color is great, the sound equally impressive. Many of these shorts were previously released on Disney's VHS line called "Limited Editions Gold" series 1 and 2 in the late 80's. (each series was 6 tapes). In fact, that line contains many SS shorts not on the DVD. However, the DVD does have some 35 different SS shorts on it. Many have introductions by the host of the series, Leonard Maltin. (Note! Many also have intros by Walt Disney - but they are hidden as Easter Eggs! You'll have to search for those Easter Eggs to get Walt's commentary!)
All in all, this is a wonderful package for SS fans, with a nice selection of the Silly Symphony shorts (35 shorts are on the DVD, 36 are not) with subjects to please adults and children alike, gorgeous color and sound, and very attractive packaging. Plus you get a little 6x8 "card" of collectible poster art in the box. If you love 30's animation and especially Disney's, you can't go wrong with this set of DVDs.
(Now, I HAVE to mention one thing. Although the selections on the DVDs are great, I wish they would have made this a 4 disk set, and put ALL 71 SS shorts on DVD at one time. There are some shorts that truly deserved to be on this DVD set, such as The Moth and the Flame, the four "Seasons" shorts, Three Blind Mouseketeers (a precursor to the Mickey Mouse Club!), Goddess of Spring, and certainly Toot, Whistle at el. I guess these are being held for Volume II at some point, but it would have been nice to not have quite as much commentary from Leonard, and more of the shorts instead. No offense Leonard.)
All in all, I give this effort 4 out of 5 stars. Get this DVD, you won't regret it and you'll enjoy it for years!Walt Disney Treasures - Silly Symphonies (1936) OverviewThis groundbreaking series of 31 uncensored cartoons, released between 1929 and 1939, includes six Academy Award(R) winners and provides an astonishing look inside the evolution of animation. Each boasting a unique cast of characters, these musical shorts served as Walt Disney's proving ground for emerging technology, new musical styles, and experimental forms. In addition to the cartoons themselves, join Academy Award(R)-winning composer Richard M. Sherman (MARY POPPINS) for an overview of the "Silly Symphony" series, and take a peek inside the Disney archives to view some rare and remarkable merchandise, conceptual art, and theatrical posters. Enjoy a nostalgic look back at the original musical shorts that launched a revolution in the world of animation. Featuring exclusive introductions by film historian Leonard Maltin, this is a timeless collection from generations past for generations to come.

The Saddle Club - Adventures at Pine Hollow (2001) ReviewA mean girl, horses, handsome young men, horses, girlfriends, boys, horses--this movie has everything a young girl on the verge of her teenage years could want.
My daughter discovered this movie last weekend, just after returning home from a combined swimming pool/horseback riding birthday party and right before uncovering her case of chicken pox. (mild, fortunately.)
Since we've been encountering some problems with a mean girl in school, the nasty, spoiled rich girl in the story who has nothing kind whatsoever to say to anyone, except when she's trying to manipulate people, held my attention. I confess, I cheered (quietly but vociferously) when she fell off her horse.
But that's not really the main focus of the movie.
Here's what this movie, based an Australian TV series, which itself was based on a series of books by Bonnie Bryant--none of which we'd read or even heard of until now-- is about:
Three likable girls, Stevie, Carol, and Lisa, all try to perfect their riding skills at an Australian riding club while
coping with the nasty Veronica whose stubbornness leads to the
death of her horse, their own changing interests, the impending birth of a foal, various other horse health crises, and the presence of handsome young fellows who work as stablehands. Oh, and a boy their age who is, in his own fumbling way, trying to figure out how to let one of the girls know that he likes her.
Carol is still contending with the loss of her mother, a veterinarian whose shoes she'd hoped to fill, though she encounters doubts. Stevie is trying to stay out of
Veronica's way while maintaining her interest in horses, even as some of her friends strike out in other directions and Lisa is just trying to figure out life.
The girls go through their paces with their horses, try to
ignore Veronica and her pal, await the arrival of the foal and visit with an old friend whose interests have changed.
There are moments of bravery and derring-do, a little skulduggery (Veronica just has to do things her way, and the death of her horse slows her down only temporarily), and some rather wise, no-nonsense adults who pop in and out of scenes, offering mostly good advice. Thank goodness there were no truly idiotic adult types that we see so often on TV.

It is a pretty tame movie overall, but with great appeal to preteen girls. (Preteen boys would rather take out the garbage than watch it, I suspect.) We, or at least the junior person in the house, has seen it six times so far.
There's nothing untoward in this movie, nothing to keep parents from letting their daughters see it, with the issues of developing friendships and rivalry sure to catch their attention.
Because of the death of the horse, some younger girls may not want to watch this, though there's no actual death scene. Overall, it's a pleasant enough story with a few lessons for girls, and a wonderful musical theme called Hello World. The Saddle Club - Adventures at Pine Hollow (2001) OverviewThe adventures of three adolescent girls, Stevie, Carole and Lisa in their \Saddle club" at the Pine Hollow Stables where they spend all their free time.Genre: Feature Film FamilyRating: NRRelease Date: 2-MAR-2004Media Type: DVD"""

The Wiggles Go Bananas (2009) ReviewI am giving 5 stars because it's that good to me. My 3 year old son loves the dvd and I have to say I enjoyed it as well. An added bonus to me was, getting to see all the "real" animals. The wiggles are dressed as animals and that is cute and makes the kids laugh, but it also has lots of live animals. And of course all kids love animals. If you are a wiggles fan or if your little one loves animals you can't go wrong with this one. It's full of toe tapping songs, and lots of wiggle fun. I will have to say I missed seeing Benny in this dvd. I guess he has left the wiggles. Captain feathersword hasn't went anywhere:) He's still a ball of fun for the kids. The captain and Anthony is our favorites. Get the dvd, your kids will love it!The Wiggles Go Bananas (2009) OverviewIn their latest adventure, The Wiggles Go Bananas! the fab four of fun have recorded some of their most catchy and infectious songs to date. Even pop superstar Kylie Minogue has donned a pink skivvy and joined The Wiggles to sing Monkey Man.We jump into the heart of the groovy animal kingdom with songs such as The Lion Is King, Kangaroo Jumping, Tassie Devil and The Chicken Walk. Australia's John Waters sings Rusty The Cowboy, while Captain Feathersword sings The Dingle Puck Goat. So jump into the jivin' jungle with the kings of pre-school swing as The Wiggles Go Bananas!

What Would Jesus Do ReviewExcellent message - how one person can change how a whole town lives by simply saying "What would Jesus do?" This movie is loosly based on the 1898 novel, "In His Steps: What would Jesus Do?" by Charles Sheldon. The names are the same, but the story takes a modern tone, but the valuable lesson is the same. A drifter, played by John Schneider is shunned by the community even the pastor of a dying church, played by Jim Gleason, tells him "I'm sorry that I can't help you." But the message the drifter brings to a church is "would Jesus act that way?" As church members start changing the way they do things from running their businesses to helping the less fortunate, the wave of love and goodness takes over the town even when a greedy, ruthless politician wants to take over.
This message is vital to the world in this day and age. Imagine what would happen if every Christian would think before acting and ask themselves "what would Jesus do in my place?

VeggieTales - The Complete Silly Song Collection (2001) ReviewLooking for silly song collections on DVD? Then you've come to the right place. This set collections all three silly song collections plus a new fourth disc.
Disc one is the original. "Very Silly Songs" collects music from their first few videos. It includes words down at the bottom so you can sing along with such hits as "Dance of the Cucumber," "God is Bigger," "The Water Buffalo Song," and "The New, Improved Bunny Song." Along the way, Larry introduces the first ever VeggieTales workout, home improvement, and success videos. This is also our first meeting with "The Pirates who don't do Anything."
Disc two is the second sing-a-long video. "The End of Silliness!?!" finds Larry despondent in a diner mourning the loss of the "Silly Songs with Larry segments. Along the way, we get to hear such classics as "Stuffmart Rap," "Cheeseburger Song," "Song of the Cebu," "and "Promised Land."
The third disc in this set is "The Ultimate Silly Song Countdown." The only part to be previously released on DVD, this show counts down the first ten silly songs according to fan votes. What will be the number one song?
The final disc is all new. This disc is a silly song jukebox. With 35 songs to choose from, you can select the songs and the order they play in. Or you can let the machine choose at random. Either way, sit back and relax to some silly music and video. Included on this disc are classics from the first videos and new songs like "Hope's Song," "Sport Utility Vehicle," "Bellybutton Song," and "Schoolhouse Polka."
Granted, the last two discs have lots of overlap from the first two. But depending on what you want to see, it's not that bad. And for the price per disc, you really can't complain. The only song collection missing is one they released to promote Jonah.
Each of the first three discs have audio commentaries, behind the scenes interviews, games, how to draw segments, and more fun.
If you love your veggie songs, silly and other wise, this set is for you. You'll be singing and laughing for hours at the silliness while learning some Biblical truths in the process.VeggieTales - The Complete Silly Song Collection (2001) Overview

Saddle Club - Horse Crazy - The New Movie (2005) ReviewI really thought this movie was good. To be sure, it is a children's movie, specifically for young horse-crazy girls. There are a few boys that ride in it also. Very age appropriate fare for your stable/barn kids to watch and enjoy over and over again, it follows several story lines all related to life at the barn for a group of girls and boys that own and work with the horses there. As a grown up horse-crazy woman now, I enjoyed it with my 4 year old daughter and certainly would have loved for this series to be around when I was that age! Two thumbs up for young entertainment with no veiled adult-type references, no skimpy clothes, and no bad language, just good stories that are fun and horse-centric.Saddle Club - Horse Crazy - The New Movie (2005) Overview

Beethoven Lives Upstairs (1992) ReviewOur family (girls ages 4 and 6) loved the CD by the same name so much that we bought the video too. We were impressed at the ability of the writers and director to rearrange the story and the music to fit a film version. I realized that I knew nothing of Beethoven and read his biography after viewing the video. Then I was really impressed to find how much accurate information about Beethoven's life was interwoven into the story. Although we prefer the CD version, I think that seeing the period costume and setting helped the girls place the story in an historical context. We are now all Beethoven fans and listen to his music with new appreciation.Beethoven Lives Upstairs (1992) Overview

Hello Kitty Becomes a Princess (1987) ReviewThe cartoons are from the 1980's Hello Kitty tv series "Hello Kitty's Furry Tale Theater," which are variations on popular fairy tales/movies. They feature Hello Kitty, My Melody, Tuxedo Sam, Chip, Catnip & Grinder, who are actors in the theatre.
Each DVD contains 5 fairy tales, and each fairy tale is about 10 minutes long and has its own unique take on the familiar stories. They are also changed to be less violent, nicer and more suited for children (water balloon fights instead of guns).
The quality of the DVD's are more like TV broadcast quality and this is the reason I've given it 4 stars instead of 5. I think they could've enhanced the quality before putting it onto DVD. It is also not recorded in stereo sound. I already owned the 2 Furry Tale Theater VHS's (Kitty and the Beast, The Wizard of Paws), so I already knew what to expect.
I'm an adult Sanrio collector and I loved seeing these episodes, and I would feel good about letting my children see these too.
The following is the list of the episodes in this DVD:
"Hello Kitty Becomes a Princess" has Kitty and the Beast, Snow White Kitty and the One Dwarf, Sleeping Kitty, CinderKitty, and KittyLocks and the Three Bears.Hello Kitty Becomes a Princess (1987) Overview

A Little Princess (1995) Review"I am a Princess. All girls are. Even if they live in tiny old attics. Even if they live in rags. Even if they aren't pretty, or young, or smart, they're still princesses. All of us! Didn't your father ever tell you that? Didn't he?"
Well no. My Dad didn't call me a princess, and that's because I'm a guy. But after seeing this movie, I was really beginning to wish I was. "A Little Princess" is quite simply amazing. It is the most magical family movie there is. I just can't recommend it high enough. I saw this at the movie theater, 7 times and it is quite easily my favorite film of all time.
Set in 1914, "A Little Princess" tells the story of a girl called Sara who goes to a strict boarding school while her father from England goes to fight the War. The school is run by a mean spirited head teacher called Miss Minchin. From the start, Miss Minchin is jealous of Sara who considers herself to be a princess. After all, her Papa has told her that she will always be his little princess. Despite the harshness of Miss Minchin, Sara continues to fill those around her with magic as she tells stories to them of a beautiful princess and her prince.
The emotion begins early in this movie, firstly being when Sara and her Papa say goodbye as he goes into war. Midway through the movie Sara hears that her Papa has been killed in battle. I have to say, when I watched this I was gone. Ok I wasn't gone yet, but I was holding the tears in. Actress Liesel Matthews who plays Sara is so genuine, and director Alfonso Cuaron definitely brings out the best in her. It is at the end which is complimented by the music of Patrick Doyle, that I really did feel a few tears going by my face. It happened just after Sara realized she may truly have lost her father forever.
The DVD itself just has a trailer and it would be great if it had more extras, but the moie is just so wonderful that you have to buy this DVD. In addition, the subtle Dolby Digital 5.1 is just right for a movie such as this.
"A Little Princess" made my heart feel so much, and I really felt like a girl, getting upset over a family movie like this. I guess I was getting in touch with my inner princess. Maybe I am a princess after all.A Little Princess (1995) OverviewThe beloved story from the author of the Secret Garden becomes 1995's best reviewed film. Sesame Street: Kids' Favorite Songs (1969) ReviewOf all the Sesame Street DVDs that we have, this one is definitely my daughter's favorite. Though she is only 15 months old, she now sings bits and pieces and hums the tune to several of the songs on here. When my husband and I try to watch a DVD, she will run over and grab this one and shove at us to put it in so she can watch it.
Unlike some other Sesame Street DVDs, this one actually has somewhat of a plot. Everyone on Sesame Street thinks that Elmo is going to do a top ten countdown of his favorite songs on the radio, so they all spend the entire time trying to convince him to use their favorite song on the countdown - turns out all Elmo wants is some quiet time so that he can practice his top ten countdown (all he is going to do on the radio is count backwards from 10 to 1.) The songs on here are some favorite kids' songs - I've Been Working on the Railroad, Baa Baa Black Sheep, The Alphabet Song, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Row Row Row Your Boat, She'll Be Comin' Round the Mountain, John Jacob Jingle-Heimer Schmidt, etc. If you only purchase one Sesame Street DVD, this should be it!Sesame Street: Kids' Favorite Songs (1969) OverviewSesame Street: Kids' Favorite SongsElmo's getting ready for his Top Ten Countdown on the radio and everyone on Sesame Street wants him to play their favorite songs! But with so many great songs to choose from, how will Elmo pick which ones to play? Maybe you can help him decide. Which of these favorites is your favorite song?Recommended Ages: 12 months & up
