A Concert by the Lake (2010) ReviewFirst, this is not an Eric Clapton DVD he only plays 3 songs, and is only lack luster at best. Most of it is Radio POP songs (long faded and forgotten) done by the other individuals off their solo albums and is not my type of music at all. Video is a little fuzzy and the Audio is only fair as far as Blu-ray should be. This is also an old recording at least 10 years or older, back when EC had long hair. There is no recording date any where on the cover or disc. Too bad, these are big name artists that don't really meld their styles together very well in my opinion. I can think of many other standard DVDs that should be on Blu-ray other than this dull and boring performance by all. The only highlight I found was end of the disc.
I wish Amazon had a 3 criteria rating that would make for a quicker, more accurate and fair rating of Cd's, DVDs and Blu-ray's.
1. Performance
2. Quality of Audio
3. Quality of Video (for DVDs and Blu-ray's)
1.**
2.***
3.***
Artists that wish to have there performances recorded and recognized should be held to a standard. Poor Audio or Video, no matter how good the performance, is still a bad product. Those who would still purchase sub-standard Audio or Video quality recordings and rank that product highly just because of performance are not doing the industry or the band justice. Demand better and we will get it, settle for less and that's what you'll get.A Concert by the Lake (2010) Overview

Rush: Music From The Motion Picture Soundtrack ReviewEric Clapton had never provided the score to a film, but he finally jumped into the film area with the soundtrack to Rush. The movie chronicles the tale of two undercover narcotic offices who in the course of their jobs become heroin addicts themselves. The album is made up of mostly instrumentals that has a dark and mellow nature that underscores the decent into drug addicted hell the two cops spiral into. Mr. Clapton himself was facing tragedy as he was recording the album, his four year old son Conner, was killed when he accidentally fell out of a window. To memorialize his son, he wrote and recorded one of most haunting and elegant songs ever written about the loss of loved one, "Tears In Heaven". The song would go on to bigger fame in it's Unplugged version, but the studio version is equally beautiful and worth buying the album for alone.Rush: Music From The Motion Picture Soundtrack Overview

Carl Perkins & Friends: Blue Suede Shoes - A Rockabilly Session (2006) ReviewI've had the original VHS version of this classic rockabilly special for years, and it still remains my favorite concert video ever. It's great to finally have this available on DVD after all these years for today's music fans to discover. Roy Orbison's "Black and White Night" and Chuck Berry's "Hail Hail Rock n' roll" are the only two concert videos that capture the true spirit of early rock n' roll the way this show does.
The legendary Carl Perkins is one of the often overlooked singer-songwriter-guitar players of early rock n' roll who had one big hit in the 1950's before a car crash stopped the momentum of his career right as it was taking off. He never achieved the popularity or recognition that his peers Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Buddy Holly, and Elvis achieved. Recorded in London in October 1985, this priceless performance clearly shows he was in the same talent league as his better-known contemporaries. Perkins' country-rock vocal delivery and trademark rockabilly guitar licks are more potent here at age 54 than they were in his younger days.
Few concert videos capture the sheer joy of playing music on stage like this show does. When I saw this for the first time over ten years ago, I was blown away by the joy and spirit of the music that literally jumps off the screen until you find yourself watching it over and over. The music here, wonderfully directed by Dave Edmunds, is quite simply some of the greatest real deal rock n' roll ever performed on one stage. The musicians did a great job of recreating Perkins' classic songs in their original arrangements while making them rock like never before.
When all is said and done, this masterpiece should be hailed as one of the greatest rock n' roll shows ever captured on film! You can't help but like Carl Perkins after watching this show. The real beauty of this concert is the almost magical effect that Carl's presence had on all his famous guests. George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Dave Edmunds, and Roseanne Cash deliver some of the best performances of their careers as Perkins' music and enthusiasm brings out the best in everybody on the stage! George and Ringo have never sounded better, and seem more inspired here than they were with the Beatles. Ringo's drumming is rock steady, and Harrison shines like never before as he shows just how well he could play rockabilly guitar.
Eric Clapton's segment is dynamite as we watch him unleash some of the hottest guitar solos he has played since his glory years in the late 60's. Clapton TEARS IT UP with a scorching, jaw-dropping solo during "Mean Woman Blues" that is worth the price of the DVD alone, and Carl's amazed reaction to Eric is priceless! Watch closely for a great moment during "Matchbox" when Carl suddenly jumps back in disbelief while watching Eric rip into his first solo. I love it!
This show is pure joy from start to finish, but the best is saved for last with a truly FANTASTIC performance of "Blue Suede Shoes" that is nothing more than rock n' roll at its joyful best! Anybody who still associates this song with Elvis needs to hear Perkins tear into it with his heart and soul in this performance. Watching Carl and his friends rock their hearts out with the audience dancing all over the place is probably the highlight of the entire show. George Harrison is so caught up in the music that he suddenly leads the band into a rousing encore of the song. Dave Edmunds sums up the electricity of the moment as he turns to Carl and shouts "ROCK IT MAN!"
The most touching moment comes after the show has ended when Carl, unaware that the cameras are still taping, is moved to tears of joy while giving a heartfelt thank you to everyone there. The warmth and sincerity of the man is truly admirable as he showers every guest with kind words of praise throughout the show.
The music world lost a fine musician and human being when Carl Perkins passed away in 1998. This unforgettable show will stand as a great tribute to his spirit, music, influence, and talent. If pure three-chord rock n' roll is your thing, this DVD is your ticket to paradise!

Legends - Live at Montreux (2005) ReviewThey say you become a legend after you die, but these guys are truly living legends. Amazing musicianship from the top in their fields. Clapton is at his best on this video, and although not a jazz musician, he brings the best of his blues-rock chops to this eclectic, fusion mix.
The viewer is treated to electric and acoustic sets, being the electric ones my favorites. The song that is worth the price of the whole DVD alone, in my humble opinion is 'Put it where you want it'. Amazing, energetic solos by Sanborn, Clapton and Sample.
About the DVD itself. Audio transfer is flawless, with DTS and Dobly tracks, you get a crisp, kind of live quality to the show.
The video is letterbox format, great for concerts, but colors seem to be a little washed off, my bootleg copy from japanese Tv seems to have more quality to it. No extras on this dvd :( and only a very straightforward menu animation.
For it's price, this is one of the best concerts out there, especially if you are a Clapton fan, but Sanborn and Miller also deliver the goods like no other. RecommendedLegends - Live at Montreux (2005) OverviewEagle Vision is delighted to be continuing the release of DVD's from the archives of the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival.LEGENDS is a unique concert from the Montreux Festival, bringing together the formidable talents of five musical superstars: ERIC CLAPTON (guitar & vocals), STEVE GADD (drums), MARCUS MILLER (bass), JOE SAMPLE (piano) and DAVID SANBORN (saxophone). All acclaimed in their own fields, they work even better as a group. The music is an intoxicating blend of jazz and blues on classic tracks such as Full House, Shreveport Stomp, Groovin' and a wonderful acoustic version of Clapton's LAYLA that's guaranteed to give you goosebumps. With a substantial following for each of these artists, the chance to see them playing together should make this one of the most in-demand Montreux titles to date.Tracklisting:1. Cream - Royal Albert Hall - London May 2-3-5-6 2005 (2005) ReviewI bought this DVD with some degree of trepidation given that most of these reunion gigs/albums whatever seldom live up to the hype Rumours have abounded about Jack Bruce's poor health and finances as well as personal emnities between the various band members but in the end I could not pass it up.
From the moment that the band walked on the stage I had a lump in my throat and from the very fist note it was clear that in the intervening years since Goodbye Cream the only thing that had changed was the degree of skill and virtuosity that each possessed had increased.
I am not churlish about the song selection given the stated number of songs that the trio had played together summed to only 35 as per Bruce including the ones that had never been played. I am sure that each of us has our own favourites that we wanted them to play and we were disappointed by their exclusion but ce la vie. I do agree with others that a gesture to the diehard fans about making available the totality of the concerts available on CD would be a good one. Especially since Eric has done it before regarding his solo performances in the same venue.
Before foccussing on the songs I must say that for me the most poignant moment can when they were performing Badge and Clapton left the section attributed to his friend George on the album silent before resuming his blistering, very heartfelt playing. If these shows are about anything it is about learning that life is too short for holding grudges and we should all be thankful of each opportunity to share our wonderful gifts with others.
Aside from the music the highlights of this two disc set lie in the camera shot of Brian May in the audience during the performance, another friend who has been a good asscoiate of Eric's in recent years and the brief interviews, alas each done separately giving us insight into the shows.
AS for the music, it is a shock to the system to see what these three old men can put out on stage just in terms of the sheer power of the trio. The band rehearsed a lot we know but the blistering improvisations remain outstanding and the Grateful Dead would be proud. The interplay between Bruce and Clapton was a joy to behold and Bruce's bass almost seemed to be alive. Ginger Baker may be getting on a bit but he can still pound the life out of the drum kit.
For me Crossroads brought tears to my eyes as did Badge, The initial chords of the blues song seemed an anachronism in an odd sort of way but Clapton has a way of giving each song another idiosyncratic feel at the heart of the blues tradition but at the same time in a very contemporary manner. His seemingly endless capacity to express his emotions in a different way in each song in such an easy manner is incredible and that was no more so in evidence in We're Going Wrong.
To me none of the songs were a disappointment even Pressed Rat and Wharthog which even seemed to belong. You almost wanted the discs to go on forever and the surprising thing is that by the end they do not seem to have been on long at all.
I thought that I had seen the pinnacle of Clapton playing at the Concert for George in the loving yet mournful rendition of While My Guitar Gently Weeps yet in these shows you found the full gamut of hurt and anguish, joy and pain, being delivered almost offhandedly by a Clapton whose own life experiences have earned him the term blues player. These three guys on the stage infront of such a mixed age audience drew us all in the to excellent playing and in effect into their own intimate relationship. The DVD selection in the fantastic sound derserves to be in every home.
Cream we salute thee. The Cream is dead. Long live the Cream.Cream - Royal Albert Hall - London May 2-3-5-6 2005 (2005) OverviewIn May of 2005 Cream returned to London's Royal Albert Hall-to the same stage where they had completed what was thought to be their final performance in 1968. It was one of the most eagerly anticipated, hard-to-get tickets in rock history. With the exception of a brief reunion set at their 1993 induction into the Rock and roll Hall of Fame, Cream had not played together in nearly four decades. This DVD documents Cream's momentous London shows. Performances from each of the four nights are featured and much more. Also included are alternate performances and interviews with Ginger Baker, Jack Bruce, and Eric Clapton. Cream formed in 1966 and disbanded in 1968. The band were a prolific and thrilling live act and toured incessantly in their short but remarkable history.Track Listings: I'm So Glad, Spoonful, Outside Woman Blues, Pressed Rat & Warthog, Sleepy Time Time, N.S.U., Badge, Politician, Sweet Wine, Rollin' & Tumblin', Stormy Monday, Deserted Cities of the Heart, Born Under a Bad Sign, We're Going Wrong, Crossroads, Sitting on Top of the World, White Room, Toad, Sunshine of Your Love, Spoonful (Alternate Takes), Sleepy Time Time (Alternate Takes), Badge (Alternate Takes), Sweet Wine (Alternate Takes), Rollin' & Tumblin', We're Going Wrong, White Room, Sunshine of Your Love

Eric Clapton: Crossroads Guitar Festival (2004) ReviewI was lucky to attend the festival in Dallas this summer. While the songs selected for the DVD aren't always the ones I would have picked (Buddy Guy blew everyone else away, but he is conspicuously absent except for the ensemble numbers), this is nontheless sure to be a great DVD. Clapton was brilliant as usual, Santana was fantastic and ZZ Top were their usual eccentric selves.
John Mayer, Jonny Lang and Robert Randolph were all excellent newcomers in the mostly over-50 lineup. Jimmie Vaughan and his Tilt-a-whirl band served as a fantastic houseband, backing up the many blues legends on hand.
Some disappointing omissions ... Robert Randolph's "I Need More Love" ,a surprising show-stealer on the second day of the festival is not listed. Same with John Mayer's "Come Back To Bed". Styx put on a surprisingly good set of cover tunes, from the Beatles' "I Am The Walrus" to BB King's "The Thrill Is Gone". Also, Eric Clapton's set on the third day included a nice selection of songs from his new album of Robert Johnson covers that are omitted here.
That said, I still pre-ordered my copy as soon as I saw it announced. They could have made it a four disc set with more material and doubled the price and I still would have bought it.Eric Clapton: Crossroads Guitar Festival (2004) OverviewIn June 2004, some of the greatest living guitar players and their bands gathered at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas, for a three-day festival to benefit the Crossroads Centre in Antigua. It was the ultimate concert for any music lover, featuring one legend after the other: Eric Clapton, BB King, Buddy Guy, Eric Johnson, James Taylor, Jimmie Vaughan, Joe Walsh, John Mayer, Robert Cray, Robert Randolph, Santana, ZZ Top, and many more. This 2-DVD set beautifully documents the event and contains over 4 hours of content. Planned extras include in-depth artist interviews, a mini-documentary, photo gallery, alternate angle, and more. Royalties from the DVD sales will benefit the Crossroads Center.

MusiCares Tribute to Neil Young (2011) ReviewThis is a completely enjoyable through Neil's songbook by a bunch of extremely talented artists. Both Dave Matthews and Ben Harper show what great musicians they are by largely solo acoustic performances, Keith Urban shows off his lead guitar chops (in tandem with no less a legend than John Fogerty of CCR), and CSN show that they can still harmonize beautifully. Performances by Norah Jones, Lady Antebellum, and Jason Mraz/Shawn Colvin show of the often ignored sweeter side of Neil. And Wilco's on-stage replication of the very complex studio creation Broken Arrow is just amazing.
Does Neil do all these songs better? Of course! Any major talent, from Dylan and the Beatles on down always does their own material best. But these are still very enjoyable versions that give one a different take on Neil's artistry.MusiCares Tribute to Neil Young (2011) Overview

Tommy (1975) ReviewAs the five-star rating would indicate, I've loved TOMMY sincethe day it opened (and yes, I was there for its premiere). I've alsopurchased the movie in just about every incarnation that have been released: videotape, laserdisc, and now DVD.
What's most exciting about the DVD version -- and something which doesn't seem to have been mentioned in other Amazon reviews -- is that the soundtrack to the film has been completely restored. "Quintaphonic sound" may sound a little silly and may not even mean much in this age of digital sound, but TOMMY was the movie that saw the rebirth of multi-channel audio (most films of the late 60s and early 70s were either mono or 2-channel stereo). The enhanced 5-channel discrete sound was a perfect extension of Ken Russell's audacious visuals. The tag line to the movie was "Your senses will never be the same," and it perfectly described both the visual AND aural assault on audience members.
Well, this DVD is the first (and only) format to feature the complete "Quintaphonic" soundtrack. If you have a Dolby Digital decoder, you're going to hear the movie in a way that wasn't even possible back in 1975! All of the vocals are locked dead center while the score itself blasts out of the remaining four speakers. And there's absolutely no distortion, even when you jack the volume up (which you should, since it was intended to be heard that way). It's a wonderful - and quite unexpected - thrill to hear the movie this way. Previous editions had absolutely terrible audio tracks that were poorly mixed down from the originals. The result -- even on the laserdisc -- was a muddy mess. Not so with this DVD edition, which includes a written essay insert explaining the soundtrack's restoration.
The picture quality is also outstanding. One key moment: during the blackout section of "Fiddle About" the screen is absolutely dark -- not a speck can be seen, proof that this film was carefully transferred from a pristine source print!
This is an incredible film presented on an incredible DVD. If your home system isn't yet able to decode the Dolby Digital soundtrack, do yourself a favor and get a decoder at the same time you buy this disc. You won't be sorry.
I'd warn the neighbors first, though!Tommy (1975) OverviewFilm version of the successful rock opera about a boy who witnesses the murder of his father by his mother and her lover. He becomes deaf, dumb and blind, and as he grows, he is taken to various experts for cures.Genre: MusicalsRating: PGRelease Date: 25-MAY-2004Media Type: DVD
