Beatles - Around the World Review"Description

That was the description Amazon had posted when I ordered this DVD (probably still does.) I don't know what DVD that was written about, but it's certainly not this one. That's part of the good news, because I had a guess to what it really was when I ordered it.
Beatles "Around the World" actually contains three sections. First is what seems to be a basically complete version of the "Around the Beatles" TV broadcast from England. The theater sketch along with the music segments from all the artists (Cilla Black, etc.) and The Beatles music segment in pretty good quality (like the medley and Shout among many others.) This is the best quality overall of the 3 sections.
Next is the promo ad for theater showings of the first U.S. Washington D.C. concert program, and then the program straight through until the abrupt cut durring the next to last song. All the stage rotating and banter, along with the music is included. Watchable quality here, but not the newly found tape source that Apple used a part in Anthology.
Third segment is the 1966 Tokyo "light suits" concert. Big surprise is the very poor video quality on this. I have seen this show look almost pristeen, as does the "dark suits" show that was available on Laserdisc from Japan. The audio is acceptable, wish they would have tracked down a much better copy of this show to put out.
Tacked on the end of the disc is a throw away biography and photo gallery. Now some more good news and bad. The case says this is "region 0" not "1" so anyone can use it. The case also says in very small print "PAL." I know this release was originally from Australia, which uses the PAL system, but I figured if it was released as a domestic item here it would be done NTSC. I have two players I can put DVDs in. The first player I tried would not play this disc. I got a couple frozen images then the disc would just hang and do nothing. The menu was one of the images, but without the controls to navigate it. Weirder part is, this is my region-free all-code player that is also supposed to handle PAL discs. My Pioneer combo Laserdisc/DVD unit played this disc fine. As far as I know, it is not supposed to handle PAL discs. Is the case wrong and the disc is actually NTSC? Or is this disc PAL like the case says and I'm lucky one of my players can handle it? Be warned, it could go either way for you too.
Rare concert material here all in one place, could have used better source tapes. Moot points if you can't get it to play at all.Beatles - Around the World Overview

Carl Perkins & Friends: Blue Suede Shoes - A Rockabilly Session (2006) ReviewI've had the original VHS version of this classic rockabilly special for years, and it still remains my favorite concert video ever. It's great to finally have this available on DVD after all these years for today's music fans to discover. Roy Orbison's "Black and White Night" and Chuck Berry's "Hail Hail Rock n' roll" are the only two concert videos that capture the true spirit of early rock n' roll the way this show does.
The legendary Carl Perkins is one of the often overlooked singer-songwriter-guitar players of early rock n' roll who had one big hit in the 1950's before a car crash stopped the momentum of his career right as it was taking off. He never achieved the popularity or recognition that his peers Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Buddy Holly, and Elvis achieved. Recorded in London in October 1985, this priceless performance clearly shows he was in the same talent league as his better-known contemporaries. Perkins' country-rock vocal delivery and trademark rockabilly guitar licks are more potent here at age 54 than they were in his younger days.
Few concert videos capture the sheer joy of playing music on stage like this show does. When I saw this for the first time over ten years ago, I was blown away by the joy and spirit of the music that literally jumps off the screen until you find yourself watching it over and over. The music here, wonderfully directed by Dave Edmunds, is quite simply some of the greatest real deal rock n' roll ever performed on one stage. The musicians did a great job of recreating Perkins' classic songs in their original arrangements while making them rock like never before.
When all is said and done, this masterpiece should be hailed as one of the greatest rock n' roll shows ever captured on film! You can't help but like Carl Perkins after watching this show. The real beauty of this concert is the almost magical effect that Carl's presence had on all his famous guests. George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Dave Edmunds, and Roseanne Cash deliver some of the best performances of their careers as Perkins' music and enthusiasm brings out the best in everybody on the stage! George and Ringo have never sounded better, and seem more inspired here than they were with the Beatles. Ringo's drumming is rock steady, and Harrison shines like never before as he shows just how well he could play rockabilly guitar.
Eric Clapton's segment is dynamite as we watch him unleash some of the hottest guitar solos he has played since his glory years in the late 60's. Clapton TEARS IT UP with a scorching, jaw-dropping solo during "Mean Woman Blues" that is worth the price of the DVD alone, and Carl's amazed reaction to Eric is priceless! Watch closely for a great moment during "Matchbox" when Carl suddenly jumps back in disbelief while watching Eric rip into his first solo. I love it!
This show is pure joy from start to finish, but the best is saved for last with a truly FANTASTIC performance of "Blue Suede Shoes" that is nothing more than rock n' roll at its joyful best! Anybody who still associates this song with Elvis needs to hear Perkins tear into it with his heart and soul in this performance. Watching Carl and his friends rock their hearts out with the audience dancing all over the place is probably the highlight of the entire show. George Harrison is so caught up in the music that he suddenly leads the band into a rousing encore of the song. Dave Edmunds sums up the electricity of the moment as he turns to Carl and shouts "ROCK IT MAN!"
The most touching moment comes after the show has ended when Carl, unaware that the cameras are still taping, is moved to tears of joy while giving a heartfelt thank you to everyone there. The warmth and sincerity of the man is truly admirable as he showers every guest with kind words of praise throughout the show.
The music world lost a fine musician and human being when Carl Perkins passed away in 1998. This unforgettable show will stand as a great tribute to his spirit, music, influence, and talent. If pure three-chord rock n' roll is your thing, this DVD is your ticket to paradise!

Fantastic hardout solos, both in the guitar and drum catorgory. Slash adds his own intros to both Knockin' on Heavens Door and Paradise City before he hooks into the song itself. Other good songs include Estranged and Sweet Child o' Mine....infact it has all the legend songs. You aren't a pure Guns n' Roses fan unless you have this video. Lemmy: 49% Motherf**ker, 51% Son Of A Bitch Review'Icon, noun: a very famous person or thing considered as representing a set of beliefs or a way of life.'
The dictionary definition above perfectly describes Lemmy. His single-minded tenacity in pursuit of the Motörhead cause has led to him becoming, rightfully, a heavy-metal icon. The only other rock stars who rival him as icons are dead ones. And they cheated. Lemmy, on the other hand, earned his iconic status the hard way: by living and staying true to himself at all times. He is a walking, talking, drinking, pill-swallowing, smoking, war-obsessed, bass-rumbling, gravel-throated monster. So that's Lemmy the man...what about Lemmy the movie?
I hoped this documentary would offer fresh insights into Lemmy the human being, perhaps exploring his softer side and showing facets of his personality that haven't been publicised. (What do you mean he doesn't have a soft side? We all have one...in some people, though, it's deeper down and better hidden.) Rush's 'Beyond the Lighted Stage' and Anvil's 'The Story of Anvil' are spellbinding due to the undiluted emotion they capture, which allows viewers to connect with the artists on a deeply emotional level. With Lemmy, however, displays of emotion don't happen. Some moments in the film approach poignancy, such as when Lem talks about finding the only woman he ever truly loved dead in a bathtub, the victim of a heroin overdose. He dishes out sage advice not to do heroin, but the viewer can sense that there are undercurrents of emotion beneath Lem's heavy-metal-robot shell. If I were the film-maker, I'd have explored that avenue more. During scenes where Lemmy and his son are together the awkwardness is palpable, as if neither father nor son is fully comfortable around the other. I felt uncomfortable watching some of these interplays, and found myself wishing they'd give each other a hug as an expression of love. There is one genuinely touching moment involving father and son, but I won't disclose it in this review, as that would ruin the surprise for those who haven't yet watched the movie. Better to experience it for yourself.
We see Lemmy's apartment, his enormous collection of war paraphernalia, his favourite haunt (The Rainbow in LA), his routine, and meet several other big-name metal musicians (Dave Grohl, James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich and Scott Ian, to name a few) who have been influenced by Mr Kilmister. The inventor of space rock, Hawkwind's Dave Brock (a surprisingly lucid man, considering the amount of psychedelic and hallucinatory drugs he has ingested), discusses Lemmy's time in Hawkwind and the reasons for their parting of ways. This isn't new information to seasoned Motörheadbangers, but the camera likes both Brock and Lemmy, and it's entertaining to hear these legendary stories straight from the horses' mouths.
The bottom line is that Lemmy - even though he doesn't bare the deepest, darkest parts of his soul - is magnetically watchable. The man, the facial hair, the boots, the tight-black-jeaned swagger, the perpetual cigarette, the Jack 'n' Coke, the Rickenbacker bass and, of course, that growl. If you're a longtime fan of Lem and his music you won't learn anything new watching this film. You won't see any gushed outpourings of emotion and tears. You will, however, be entertained.
As a footnote, I've been a Motörhead fan since I was in primary school. I own all their albums, have seen them live countless times, and was lucky enough to meet Lemmy backstage at Glasgow Barrowlands after a gig. He was a consummate gentleman, and I came to understand why people - even critics - generally have nothing bad to say about the man. What you see is what you get. There's no contrived rock 'n' roll debauchery. While he may keep his rawest emotions hidden behind a protective shell, Lemmy is friendly, honest, and walks it like he talks it. The DVD with the CD of The Promise was, to my mind, a complete bust. I consider it a waste of money to have only 3 pieces of music included. The Coliseum DVD, while it does contain more music (5 pieces) is still mostly conversation. While this is interesting, it is not my reason for buying a DVD.
