Chick Corea Elektric Band: Live at Montreux 2004 (2005) ReviewChick Corea has been the most important Jazz Musician since Miles Davis, and this DVD shows that he still is just that. Joining Chick are all 4 original members of the Elektric Band. Each memeber of the Elektric band is quite possibly the best performer at his instrument. Eric Marienthal is a great sax player and performs at a top level during this whole set. John Patitucci is an amazing bass player. His standard fingering bass technique is nothing short of greatness; His phrasing and playing on this show that. Dave Weckl is one of the best drummers on the planet and has been for decades. His playing on this DVD is a must hear for drummers. He has taken his virtuosity to a new level. Frank Gambale is one of the best Fusion guitarists alive. His sweep picking technique has been a major influence on guitarists since the mid 1980's and he is spellbinding to hear. Together, they are the most talented group of musicians touring together on the planet. I have never seen a better band.(Some on the same level, but none better) During the 80's/90s this group recorded 4 great Cds together and I saw all of those tours. The decade between those cds and "To The Stars" didn't do anything to their compositions, telepathic interplay, virtuosity or live performance. This DVD captures the band at their most incredible state yet.The DVD is quality with good camera work and sound. The performance totals over 2 1/2 hours!

The concert is in two parts. The first part is a live version of the "Two The Stars" CD. Like all other CCEB tours, the music is taken to greater heights. The band improvises greatly and on "Check Blast", "Mistress Luck", and "The Long Passage" the band takes turns amazing the audience and each other. All members of the band applaud for each other and Chick has a smile that shows he knows that something special happens when he is playing with these guys. They even do an extended acoustic version of "Alan Corday" which is amazing. I found "To The Stars" to be a good but not great Corea effort. This version is as amazing as anything that they have ever done. The band then takes a break.
As great as the first part of the concert is, the second part is unreal. The band performs music from their 80's/90's tours. "CTA" is a Jimmy Heath song that the CCEB have been covering for years and have played during these last reunion tours nightly. This song is unbelievable. Each member of the band takes a solo spot. It is during this set that Dave Weckl takes his drumming to a new level. "Eternal Child" is from the "Eye of the Beholder" Cd. Once again, the band takes a compostion that I found to be good on Cd and make it great live. The whole band improvises again, and Gambale, Patitucci, and Marienthal are all incredible. ("Not shabby" in the words of Corea) 'Got A Match?' has always been a concert favorite and this version is awe inspiring. Chick starts out by trading be-bop lines with the audience. Then a great be-bop/jazz incluenced melody is played and improvised over. The whole band's virtuosity is taken to new levels. Most notable is John Patitucci's bass work. He never stops his "walking" bass and his solo is incredible. I am glad that Chick was able to get him for this gig. Chick, Marienthal and Gambale all add their own solos and then Chick trades fours with Dave Weckl. There has always been a special level of interplay between these two. They team up, yet again, to inspire each other and the audience. There is a flurry of unison lines by all and then the song ends. This tune is JAZZ fusion and an acoustic version would be amazing. All of Chick's years studying be-bop and jazz come out on this masterpiece. The DVD price is paid in full by this song alone. The first encore is "Spain". "Spain" has been a Corea concert staple for decades. The intro, based on the adagio movement from the "concierto de aranjuez"(Rodrigo), is improvised by both Corea and Patitucci. There are definite classical overtones during this part of the song. During the actual song, Marienthal and Gambale provide solos that are short, well phrased and virtuostic. Weckl closes it out with his typical brilliance. "Blue Miles" is the closer and the band shows some bluesy influences in the main theme. All performers do their thing again and then the show is over.
To sum it up; This is the DVD that Fusion fans have been dreaming of and is now a reality. You will never buy a better Jazz/Rock/Fusion DVD based on Talent of the band. If you are a fan of any of these 5, then you'll want this immediately. As individuals, each member is an absolute revelation on his instrument and as a group this is a truly timeless perfomance. Buy it now.Chick Corea Elektric Band: Live at Montreux 2004 (2005) Overview

The Shadows: The Final Tour (2010) ReviewThis is the blu-ray version of the outstanding Shadows 2004 concert recorded in Cardiff, UK. Contents are the same as the standard DVD. The menu system is a different, specifically there are more song titles displayed per screen than the original.
If you have a blu-ray player, I have a pioneer elite BDP-23FD. Picture quality is fantastic (even the standard DVD looks great on this player) and you can see more of whatever was being filmed.
I'd have given this DVD 10 stars, if possible. The performance is outstanding. If you've never heard The Shadows live, here's your chance.
I have only a standard stereo system, but the sound quality (just like the standard DVD) is great.
I'm now awaiting the blu-ray release of the Cliff/Shads Final Reunion DVD...hopefully coming soon. The Shadows: The Final Tour (2010) Overview

Legends - Live at Montreux (2005) ReviewThey say you become a legend after you die, but these guys are truly living legends. Amazing musicianship from the top in their fields. Clapton is at his best on this video, and although not a jazz musician, he brings the best of his blues-rock chops to this eclectic, fusion mix.
The viewer is treated to electric and acoustic sets, being the electric ones my favorites. The song that is worth the price of the whole DVD alone, in my humble opinion is 'Put it where you want it'. Amazing, energetic solos by Sanborn, Clapton and Sample.
About the DVD itself. Audio transfer is flawless, with DTS and Dobly tracks, you get a crisp, kind of live quality to the show.
The video is letterbox format, great for concerts, but colors seem to be a little washed off, my bootleg copy from japanese Tv seems to have more quality to it. No extras on this dvd :( and only a very straightforward menu animation.
For it's price, this is one of the best concerts out there, especially if you are a Clapton fan, but Sanborn and Miller also deliver the goods like no other. RecommendedLegends - Live at Montreux (2005) OverviewEagle Vision is delighted to be continuing the release of DVD's from the archives of the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival.LEGENDS is a unique concert from the Montreux Festival, bringing together the formidable talents of five musical superstars: ERIC CLAPTON (guitar & vocals), STEVE GADD (drums), MARCUS MILLER (bass), JOE SAMPLE (piano) and DAVID SANBORN (saxophone). All acclaimed in their own fields, they work even better as a group. The music is an intoxicating blend of jazz and blues on classic tracks such as Full House, Shreveport Stomp, Groovin' and a wonderful acoustic version of Clapton's LAYLA that's guaranteed to give you goosebumps. With a substantial following for each of these artists, the chance to see them playing together should make this one of the most in-demand Montreux titles to date.Tracklisting:1. Jules Massenet: Manon (2008) ReviewThe theatricality of this life performance of Manon on DVD is amazing. Paterson's idea to update Manon into the 50s is the creation of a genius with so many metaphors and symbolism. Like many sixteen-year-old girls, Manon dreams of becoming a movie star for fame, prosperity and the "good" life. The presence of cameras on stage from the beginning gives a physical glimpse of her dreams. And every bobby soxer dreams of the day she'll put on sheer hosiery with the sexy seam in the back. The black magic-marker line Manon inscribes on the back of her nude sexy leg is a raw manifestation of her subconscious desire that Paterson captures to
perfection.
What about the music? After all, Manon is an opera. Personally, Manon is not one of my favorite operas. The first two acts, musically speaking, are rather tedious and tenuous. The heavy dramatic singing picks up later and if it's well sung, it makes Manon a heavyweight and a tearjerker. Netrebko's Manon, with the help of Paterson's intelligent direction,
projects the character's flaws, immaturity and shallowness with honesty that makes you feel sorry for her. And her singing? Netrebko's in total command with unbelievable either playful or dramatic color. And her death scene in the end is destined for prosperity. Netrebko not only sings and acts well but she even dies better!
Villazon is in excellent form with secure top but he appears to be a liitle cautious with the size of his sound. He and Netrebko make the "dream team" one more time, as this production shows; and this DVD is highly recommended. The sound of the orchestra is underpowered at times, maybe due to a little sluggishness from the podium.

Toto - 25th Anniversary (Live in Amsterdam) (2003) ReviewNot much to add to what has already been said at long and at large from this mega band. If you're here, you probably know a lot about them. Even so, I can only recommend you to get this DVD if you don't have it...
Why should I bother, would you say, if I already have several of their records (or even all of them) ? For lots of reasons. First, the sound is amazing. I played this on my system thinking that it would be fine. It's not, it's outstanding. Also, the filming is excellent. No blurry shots, no silly angles, no focus on who isn't playing. The production is irreproachable. Another reason you should get this is the incredible atmosphere surrounding the concert. I was trying to see the people in the crowd, and to my surprise, the people there range from 20 to 50 (and apparently a majority of 30ish). In the States, Toto doesn't get any airplay, doesn't perform much, and they seem to be viewed as fossils, remembrance of the west coast style of the 80's. Not so in Japan or Europe, where they are always welcome and fill in large theaters. Amazing, don't you think ?
On stage, you have Bobby Kimball with the rest of the band and two backup musicians. Bobby is like the rest of the regular members. With wrinkles, but in great shape. What a voice! Simon Phillips is probably second best to Jeff Porcaro, Paich shows he can play anything from classic to blues and funky (we already knew that), Mike Porcaro, even though he's not Verdine White, Stanley Clarke or Mark King, is very passionate in his playing, and Luke is... well, just in case you still wondered, the true leader of the band. Just look at how everyone is positioned. The lead singer is on a second row podium half of the concert and Luke is the one walking around. He even gets to play a piano solo with David Paich having fun watching him from behind. Yet, no doubt at who is the leader there... The two cover versions ("While my guitar..." and "Bhoddisatva") are examples of what covers should be. Majestic, incredible. And with special words from Luke to his brothers George and Jeff (to me, the best drummer ever). The band shows they master all styles, from Hard Rock to Jazz, Pop, Blues, Folk, you name it.
The only thing a bit annoying is the sometimes quick blending of some stellar tracks (99 deserves more than a few notes), but they have been doing this in concert lately. All the tracks are either blended or follow each other with almost no timeout. Be ready because you're in for a two hour visual and musical treat !!
Don't miss the two bisses : home of the brave and White sister. Good, old powerful rock'n roll. By the way, I've seen this dvd several times, and I just can't help getting goose bumps on two instances : when they play I won't hold you back, and when Bobby Kimball does his solo stuff. I don't know if that can get any better. What I do know is that I will do all I can to attend their next concert. I'm going to their website to check that out. In the meantime, let's enjoy this super dvd.
P.S. I really agree with three messages the fans in the crowd show during the concert : "never enough Toto", "I could sit here forever", and "Paich for president". Thanks for the music fellows !Toto - 25th Anniversary (Live in Amsterdam) (2003) OverviewToto's "25th Anniversary Live in Amsterdam" is a musicalcelebration of the band's career. It was shot live at theHeineken Arena, in Amsterdam on February 25th, 2003. TOTO released its self-titled debut album in 1978, which hit the Top 10, sold two-million copies, and spawned the gold Top 10 single "Hold the Line." The gold-selling Hydra and Turn Back were not so triumphant, but Toto IV was a multi-platinum Top Ten hit, featuring the number-one hit "Africa" and the Top Tens "Rosanna, (about Rosanna Arquette) and "I Won't Hold You Back." At the 1982 Grammys, "Rosanna" became the award-winning Record of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Performance, and Best Instrumental Arrangement with Vocal; and Toto IV won awards for Album of the Year, Best Engineered Recording, and Best Producer.TRACK LISTING:1. Barney: Barney Songs (1992) ReviewAlmost an hour of non-stop Barney songs! My 12-month-old boy loves this tape. Now, he's figured out that if he points to the videos and says "Ba," he gets to see the Barney video, so he asks a lot. This video is pretty good as Barney goes. I find I like it better than the show. One of the songs is about using your "inside voice" in the car or at school, and your "outside voice" when you're playing outside. It's very cute. Another one that makes me laugh is about not letting the water run when you brush your teeth. So specific! :o)
Some of the other songs are:
Because I'm Growing, and So Are You
Mr. Sun, Please Shine Down on Me
Alphabet Soup
Five Butterflies Sitting on a Fence

Diana Krall: Live in Rio (2009) ReviewDiana Krall and company do it again! Another fine live performance we can experience again and again on DVD. The musical selections are very well recorded and nicely arranged. The group's generally laid-back mood is definitely in sync with this Brazilian-inspired concert. The instrumental improvisations are polished and very musical and Diana's vocals will transport you to Rio.
To those pseudo-techie critics, I recommend you pull your heads out of your iPods and really listen to the fantastic performances here. As a life-long jazz musician myself, I have better ears and probably better electronics than most of you. I find no basis for your negative reviews. As the witty Mose Allison once wrote, "Critics... they can't swim and they can't even float. They just stand at the shore and wave at the boat."
Pay no attention to the "amateur opinion havers" and blog-trogs. This is an exceptional Diana Krall concert and DVD recording. If you like her work, you'll probably love this video.Diana Krall: Live in Rio (2009) Overview
