Dracula - Entre l'amour et la mort ReviewI have not yet gotten the DVD (which is to become available in January or February 2008), but I have seen the musical 23 times.
I love the music composed by Roger Tabra (lyrics) and Simon Leclerc (music). The performers and their performances are all wonderful! Admittedly, I am a huge Bruno Pelletier fan and he was my initial draw to the project, but have since appreciated the others in the cast as well.
Bruno IS Dracula and his incandescent performance is a thing of beauty. His voice is strong. Sylvain Cossette as Jonathan Harker has one of the most haunting pieces to sing in "Mina". Andree Watters as Mina makes a splendid debut. The other novice is Daniel Boucher as Renfield and definitely a star is born in his case. The cast is rounded out by veterans Pierre Flynn (a fantastic Van Helsing), Gabrielle Destroismaisons (Lucy), Louis Gagne (Grand Lui - the narrator), Elyzabeth Diaga, Brigitte Marchand and Rita Tabbakh (the three vampiresses), background singers Claude Pineault, Julie Dassylva and Martin Giroux. In addition two musicians play live: Dan Mongrain (guitar) and Jean-Francois Groulx (keyboards).
I'm definitely looking forward to adding this DVD to my collection to enjoy for years to come!
Addition:
Now that the DVD has been released and I have obtained mine, I can tell you it is simply breathtaking! As the musical is soon to embark on a tour of Asia and Europe, it is a special treat to have it preserved with its splendid original cast.
(One minor note: Despite what this listing says, there aren't any subtitles, but that should not lessen anyone's enjoyment of this incredible spectacular.)
More:
Dracula Entre l'amour et la mort is very much still a "work in progress". It has changed quite a bit from its debut in Montreal at the St-Denis January 31, 2006. Songs and dialogue have been changed, deleted, added, and moved around. The show that was seen in Lyon, France this year was a little different still. For instance, the setting for the song "Entre l'amour et la mort" is totally different on the DVD than it was originally, and the song "Urgence" has been moved from the first act to the second, replacing "Rester debout" (also sung by Andree Watters).
I love all incarnations of the show, and I watch the DVD incessantly! I hope someday the United States will get with the program and bring the show here in its English form. That would be waaaay cool!Dracula - Entre l'amour et la mort Overview

Le Roi Soleil ReviewThis musical is simply fantastic. When I first got the CD I thought, "well, it's nice", but with every listening, it grew more and more on me. Now I absolutely LOVE this musical and I never take the CD out of my CD player anymore! There is not one song on this CD I don't like.
The songs on this CD range from mellow to pop-like (at times combined with baroque-like music), and there surely is something for everyone. What struck me about this musical is that there is not really an ensemble, but the whole CD is made up of songs from the cast, which consists of seven people.
The CD was definitely worth my money and I can only recommend it.
I have a lot of other French musicals that are worthy of being checked out, like "Romeo & Juliette", "Autant En Emporte Le Vent", "Notre Dame de Paris", "Graal", and "Les Enfants de Soleil", just to name a few. "Le Roi Soleil" is definitely one of my favorites.Le Roi Soleil Overview

A Cross The Universe (CD/DVD) ReviewThis is one of my favorite albums. If you like to bang your head to electronic music, then this is an excellent place to start. The bands' best music is best performed on this live album. If you don't get another Justice album, then get this one. They have truly defined a new genre, and I hope to hear more of this kind of music from them in he future.

The Messenger: The Story Of Joan Of Arc (Original 1999 Motion Picture Soundtrack) ReviewAn absolutely engaging CD that truly compliments the stunning film visuals. It's quite unfortunate that many may not even try the CD out given the multitude of negative reviews for the actual film. Let's just hope that's not the case. I Need That Record The Death (or Possible Survival) of the Independent Record Store (2010) ReviewDVD REVIEW: I NEED THAT RECORD! Mint! Inspired, moving study of the decline and fall of America's independent music stores...
Brendan Toller's engaging essay-film is a direct response to an unexpected extinction event of the past decade: 3,000 independent record stores have closed down in the USA alone.
By launching a two-pronged attack on the problem - meeting record store employees and customers in situ, and analysing the backstory of the wholesale restructuring of the American music industry since the 1980s - he manages to provide a rounded and quietly impassioned elegy for the kind of self-supporting yet fragile communities which independent stores bring into being.
Along the way, Toller interviews various leftfield rock icons, including Fugazi/Dischord's Ian Mackaye (brutally realistic), Thurston Moore and Chris Frantz (genially articulate), Mike Watt (incoherent), Legs McNeil (cynical) and Glenn Branca (cantankerous). Lenny Kaye explains how he actually met Patti Smith while they were both browsing in their local indie record booth, and there's the unspoken reminder of how many groups have formed through in-store notices.
But the real heroes and heroines of the story are the store owners and staff, who are painted as tireless Canutes, embattled against an oceanic sea-change in the business of selling entertainment. He begins at Record Express, the Connecticut neighbourhood record emporium that Toller used to frequent. Owner Ian is clearing his racks and sweeping up, forced out due to rent hikes and dwindling business, as he explains over choked-back tears. Meanwhile, the charismatically combative Malcolm from another CT store, Danbury's Trash American Style, explains how a local print-shop owner has just elbowed them out of a 20-year lease, while his customers mourn its passing: "It's like when your best friend's moved away to a far away land, and you can't buy a plane ticket to go there," says one. It's more than just the closure of a record store, it's the dismantling of an unofficial but tangible underground society. "A part of the culture," insists Toller, "that can't easily be regained."
How did this come to pass? Toller's argument begins with President Clinton's deregulation of radio station ownership in 1996, which led to Clear Channel owning one in 10 radio stations in the US, blanketing them with homogenised playlists. Wal-Mart, he goes on to say, has become the US's biggest record retailer, with one in every five CDs sold there.
Cumulative factors such as MTV, loss-leading CD prices by big-box retailers, even the legendary superciliousness of indie-shop staff are cited as factors, along with the inevitable role of the internet. Noting that `entrepre-nerd' Michael Robertson only owned six CDs at the time he set up the controversial [...], the film acutely observes the way download culture, with its defensive firewalls of legal protection and enforcement, has promoted a widespread antagonistic attitude to record labels rather than the kind of loyalty that might have characterised earlier generations of music lovers. With digital becoming the dominant delivery model, the prospects for future record collectors is, as Thurston Moore puts it, a "lonely and boring" experience rather than one involving community and fellowship. Theoretical heavyweight Noam Chomsky is roped in to point out the similarities with the way supermarkets sucked up the customer-base of small grocery stores. "The system is designed for isolating people," he says.
Toller has worked hard to structure his film to maximise the impact of his story, and the analytical sections are seamlessly woven in among the talking heads. Matt Newman's animations provide appropriately cut'n'paste counterpoints to the footage, and a post-punk soundtrack throbs throughout (the title track, by The Tweeds, is a celebratory slice of 1980 disc-junky power-pop).
The film's subtitle is `The Death (Or Possible Survival) Of The Independent Record Store'. It might have been useful to have gleaned, from shops that are surviving, how to keep heads above water. As it is, I Need That Record! is about more than just the death of the record store. It laments the passing of a state of mind.

-- Rob Young UNCUT Magazine, August 2010I Need That Record The Death (or Possible Survival) of the Independent Record Store (2010) OverviewGuerilla filmmaker Brendan Toller unleashes I NEED THAT RECORD! THE DEATH (OR POSSIBLE SURVIVAL) OF THE INDEPENDENT RECORD STORE, "an elegy for a vanishing subculture...a lively, bittersweet film that examines - with caustic humor, brutal candor, and, ultimately, great affection - why roughly 3,000 indie record stores have closed across the nation over the past decade," (Johnathan Perry, Boston Globe). A tour-de-force tale of greed, media consolidation, homogenized radio, big box stores, downloading, and technological shifts in the music industry told through candid interviews, crestfallen record store owners, startling statistics, and eye-popping animation. Fat cats or our favorite record stores? You decide. Featuring- IAN MACKAYE, NOAM CHOMSKY, MIKE WATT, THURSTON MOORE, LENNY KAYE (Patti Smith), CHRIS FRANTZ (Talking Heads), GLENN BRANCA, PATTERSON HOOD (Drive By Truckers), PAT CARNEY (Black Keys) , LEGS MCNEIL, BOB GRUEN, BP HELIUM, and many indie record stores across the U.S.

Rachel Portman - The Little Prince / Rhodes, Garrett, Randle, White, McManners, Carlin, Jones, Zambello, Abell, BBC Concert Opera (2005) ReviewBased on Antoine de Saint-Exupery's "Le Petit Prince", this is a remarkable staged version of the beautiful story, with music by Rachel Portman, who is more known for her film scores (she was awarded an Oscar for "Emma"), and a libretto by Nicholas Wright.
The talent is remarkable, with Joseph McManners astounding as the Little Prince; he has an angelic look, a perfect voice, and most unusual is his enunciation, which is so clear and understandable...one does not miss a single word he is singing.
There are a total of 40 children in this opera (chosen out of the 25,000 that auditioned), and they were trained in all the necessary skills at the Sadler's Wells over the course of a summer, to prepare for their parts.
Others in the cast of note that are excellent are Teddy Tahu Rhodes as the Pilot, Sir Willard Wite as the King, Lesley Garrett as the Fox, and Tom Handle as the Snake, and bravo to all those involved in the production, especially director Francesca Zambello, and Maria Bjornson's for her colorful, whimsical sets and costumes.
The opera premiered at the Houston Grand Opera in May of 2003, and this is a BBC production that has been shown on PBS stations in the US.
There is charm, humor, and artistry to delight the entire family in this musical treat; I would imagine children would like to watch it repeatedly, while the film will also manage to entertain their parents.
Imaginative and uplifting, it is approximately 90 minutes long, and in McManners, showcases a youngster that will surely be a future star.

NOTRE DAME OF PARIS (1999) ReviewWith the huge success of such grand musicals as LES MISERABLES and THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, it was perhaps obvious that sooner or later Victor Hugo's classic of love and fate, NOTRE DAME DE PARIS (AKA "The Hunchback of Notre Dame") would also get the musical treatment. Disney had already done it before as an animated film, but this time, the tragic story would be presented as a big operatic musical production. The end result would be somewhat mixed as NOTRE DAME DE PARIS became a theatrical box-office hit in both France and Canada, while underwhelming British and American audiences. (Part of this could be blamed on an English translation that proved to be both repetitive and banal.)
This DVD of NOTRE DAME DE PARIS presents the production in its original French with the option to access other language sub-titles, including English. There is also a 15 minute documentary covering the making of the musical. NOTRE DAME DE PARIS is indeed a sprawling production on a grand scale. It tells the story of the beautiful gypsy Esmeralda and of the three men who are enthralled by her: the soldier Phoebus, the priest Frollo, and Notre Dame's hunchbacked bell ringer, Quasimodo. When Esmeralda is accused of a crime which she did not commit, Quasimodo rescues and shelters her in the sanctuary of Notre Dame. However, things fall apart with tragic results.
Garou does a wonderful job of capturing the pain and humanity of Quasimodo. With his plaintive gravelly voice, his is a touching performance. Helen Segara makes for a wonderfully beautiful, if somewhat distracted, Esmeralda. Daniel Lavoie is appropriately tortured as the nasty Frollo, while Patrick Fiori is solid as the shallow Phoebus. Julie Zenatti makes the usually minor role of Pheobus' fiancée an effectively strong one, while Bruno Pelletier keeps things united as a poet/narrator. The costumes, which basically suggest the story's medieval timeframe, are only partially successful in that some of the modern touches are far too jarring for the story. The choreography also suffers since some of the numbers become far too sprawling and unfocused. There are wonderful touches throughout, however, including the sobering heart-felt finale which is true to the novel. (Something that most filmed versions of this classic tend to avoid.)
Despite its flaws, NOTRE DAME DE PARIS is definitely a show that respects its source material. As a result, it deserves attention and is definitely worth a recommendation.NOTRE DAME OF PARIS (1999) Overview

Ratatouille ReviewMichael Giacchino, the man who scored Alias, Lost, The Incredibles, Mission: Impossible 3, and The Family Stone, brings us Ratatouille, one of the most beautiful pieces of modern orchestral music out there. Like the film, the score is comedic, heartfelt, and genuine. I hope it gets the recognition it deserves with an Oscar nomination.
Some of my favorite tracks:
1.) Le Festin - Like the soundtrack insert says, Le Festin is like a classic song that's been around for ages but you've never gotten to hear it before. It's unique, and its score is repeated in different themes throughout the score.
6.) Wall Rat - I love the energy, this is simply one of the best tracks on the disk.
9.) Souped Up - I first heard this song at Wondercon with Brad Bird, it got so much excitement from the thousands of people in the theater that everyone burst into spontaneous applause.
11.) A New Deal - The first half is a heartfelt song, the second half sounds like two new friends prancing together in the park.
12.) Remy Drives a Linguini - I can see this song being played in a comedy short film; it's western and upbeat.
13.) Colette Shows Him Le Ropes - The song that plays on the Ratatouille homepage, perfect for Colette's wild personality.
14.) Special Order - Jazzy and festive, I can imagine this song being played at a salsa dance.
21.) Dinner Rush - I believe this song plays at the climax of the film. You know that Pixar-ish feeling you get when you watch a Pixar movie for the first time? I believe this was when I had that strong feeling.
22.) Anyone Can Cook - "Le Festin" but more orchestral, I think this song will help Giacchino get that deserved Oscar nomination. One of the most moving tracks in recent cinema history.
23.) End Creditouilles - A jazzier and rapid mix of a bunch of tracks from the score.
24.) Ratatouille Main Theme - Same as "Anyone Can Cook," except more dramatic, and I always get a nice shiver at the point of the song when the strings take over the orchestra. Beautiful!
Overall, I highly recommend the Ratatouille soundtrack. Look for an Oscar nomination early next year.Ratatouille OverviewSoundtrack to the Hit Walt Disney/Pixar Animation Studios Film "Ratatouillie". The Chorus (Les Choristes) ReviewPrisons are filled with people without hope; perhaps especially prisons which house young boys. Devoid of the normal pleasures of life in which boys delight, these ruffians lead desperate, bland, colorless lives of few joys, little change, and little love. Into this drab, dreary, and harsh enviornment arrives our lovable dreamer, Prefect Clement Mathieu.
A frustrated musician/composer, Mathieu has an idea: organize this rag-tag group of troublemakers into a boys choir. Like a wildflower in the field, this group springs into beautiful song and harmonies. It also upsets a few people along the way. No good deed goes unpunished, as Mark Twain said, and this one is no exception.
Mathieu is different than the other prefects and administrator/teachers, he loves the boys and in that lies the difference.
The Chorus is a sweet, gentle, moving film. Everything about it is exceptionaly well done. Remarkable acting, writing, filming, and storytelling make this a film which lingers sweetly in the mind of the viewer, long after the credits have scrolled by.The Chorus (Les Choristes) OverviewAn inspirational story in the rich tradition of MUSIC OF THE HEART and MR. HOLLAND'S OPUS, THE CHORUS has moved critics everywhere to declare it one of the year's very best films! When he takes a job teaching music at a school for troubled boys, Clément Mathieu is unprepared for its harsh discipline and depressing atmosphere. But with passion and unconventional teaching methods, he's able to spark his students' interest in music and bring them a newfound joy! It also puts him at odds with the school's overbearing headmaster, however, locking Mathieu in a battle between politics and the determination to change his pupils' lives!
