Grindcore: 85 Minutes of Brutal Heavy Metal ReviewGrindcore: 85 Minutes of Brutal Heavy Metal (director unknown, date unknown [early 90s?], DVD release 2003)
I've been having an argument on and off with an associate of mine for over a decade as to whether Godflesh were a grindcore band or not. Well, I finally have the proof I need, in the form of an old Hard 'n Heavy video magazine that found its way to a DVD release in 2003. While it focuses on bands that were more "classic" grindcore (Napalm Death and the like), there's Justin Broadrick belting out "Christbait Rising".
As has been said before, if you're looking for an introduction to or a history of the genre, this is not the release for you; this was made for existing fans of the genre during (or just before) its heyday. Preaching to the choir, as it were, and as a result it probably has more value now than it did back then on nostalgia alone. If you were there, you want to pick this one up. ***

Dead Kennedys - In God We Trust Inc. - The Lost Tapes (2003) ReviewIf your a DK fan " BUY THIS DVD "
The first part of this dvd is in the studio in 1981, and shows what it's like making a punk rock record back in the day. The 2nd part is live videos from 1979-86. I really dug the live videos ( some come from old bootlegs ) but still hold up like they were shot yesterday. The songs are only from the IN GOD WE TRUST , INC album, so no songs from bedtime, frankenchrist, P.S.D.or fresh fruit but who cares, this dvd is better than The early years & DMPO. I just hope that there are more DK dvd like this on the way!!!
thanks klaus, dh & ray for putting this out!
ps look for jello fighting during the live video of " we've got a bigger problem" crazy stuff!Dead Kennedys - In God We Trust Inc. - The Lost Tapes (2003) Overview

Loso's Way ReviewThis album has a couple REALLY good tracks, like My Time, Stay, I Miss My Love, and a few others but it also has some tracks that are absolutely horrible such as Lullaby. I definitely think Fab could have delivered a little bit better on this album, although it beats out most of the competition at the moment, it doesn't top Fab's catalog. IMO this is at the bottom of his catalog, I think almost all his other albums were better than this. In a nutshell this album is good lyrics, bad hooks. I'd rather hear that then bad lyrics, good hooks but it's not what I expected from Fab. The DVD that was included was ok at best. It started out alright but ended really bad. Lyrically (as far as the verses) this is what you can expect from Fabolous, crazy metaphors, good bars, and alright content. BUT THE HOOKS ARE ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE. I wish he did his own hooks and didn't rely on features so much.Loso's Way Overview

Killswitch Engage: Set This World Ablaze (2005) ReviewAnd yes, I mean music and movie dvd's. This dvd is amazing. Being a fan of Killswitch Engage ever since their debut came out on Ferret, I HAD to buy this. A huge documentary, I think it's something along the lines of an hour and a half, tells the story of how the band formed from many different bands, to Jesse leaving, to right now. It includes all the music videos, which is great. The bonus features are great, and often humorous, especially when their roadie gets naked and crawls into bed with Jordan, the drummer of AILD, who is passed out asleep. And the greatest thing about this dvd, is the amazing live show they play. They sound fantastic live. The show is about 75 mins and never lets you down.
I'm sure some of you have read what I just wrote about how well they sound live and are saying to yourself "Oh they over dubbed the concert, blah blah blah". I have seen plenty of live Killswitch Engage videos that weren't "overdubbed" and they sounded fantastic. My friend has also seen them a few times and has told me how amazing they are live.
For all of you complaining about the "overdubbing" and how lame it is, did you even buy the dvd? If you did, and you can actually read, you will realize that it says "Live DVD Audio Mixed By Adam Dutkiewicz at Zing Studios" and "Audio Mastered By Drew Layne at All Digital. NYC Oct. 3, 2005." So of course the big show they have on here is going to sound well. Anything is going to sound great if Adam is in charge of the sound. (You hear about this in the dvd.) And I bet that almost all of the music dvd's you complainers buy has a live show that is "overdubbed" or mixed and mastered.
All in all, I love everything about Killswitch and their dvd. They are one of the few bands that you never have to skip a track when you are listening to any of their cds. I highly recommend this to any Killswitch fan. It is a must have and is definitely worth the money.Killswitch Engage: Set This World Ablaze (2005) OverviewItem Name: Killswitch Engage: Set This World Ablaze; Studio:Roadrunner Records

Bad Brains Live - CBGB 1982 (1982) ReviewThis DVD gives a great snapshot of a time and place--well, three nights in 1982 when Bad Brains were at, or about to reach their peak. Technically, there are many blemishes such as varying audio quality and shaky blurry camera work. However, it's striking how effective some of the focused shots on individuals in the crowd really capture the feeling of those shows. (I wasn't at those shows but did see them the same year.) For example, there were tons of people jumping onto and off of the stage... no big security people standing guard. One dude was just sort of standing there on the stage until HR finally pushing him off.
The images add context to the wildness of the music. The reggae tunes add an interesting balance. But what I really walked away with (I saw this in a theater tonight in Portland) was that Bad Brains really put their heart into their work. No matter what you do, you can watch this and say "wow, if you're going to do something you might as well go all the way". It's an inspirational movie.
I should add that this DVD is simply a bunch of concert footage (at least what I viewed). It's not a bunch of old rockers making some after-the-fact comments like "the first time I heard them I knew there was something special" like you see in some videos.
It's a great sing-along too.Bad Brains Live - CBGB 1982 (1982) Overview

Jim Breuer: Hardcore (2002) ReviewAnytime you see stand-up comedian Jim Breuer take the stage, you know it's going to be a good time. It's not just a regular night of stand-up, it's a all-out crazy party! Jim Breuer takes no prisoners in this Comedy Central Special, "Jim Breuer: Hardcore."
You almost get exhausted by just watching him run around the stage like a madman. There is hardly a second that goes by where you're not laughing hysterically. In this special, Breuer talks about music, drugs, growing up, being a father, being married, and more. There's also a band that Jim travels around with when he performs, which really separates this comedy special from the rest.
The DVD has a few special features, such as never-aired performance segments and two segments from Jim's first Comedy Central performance. It's not a lot, but for a comedy special DVD, those are some really cool extras.
The only major drawback is the breaks in where the commercials would usually separate the show if you were watching it on cable. It kind of ruins the flow at times. You would really be getting into it all and then all of the sudden there's a little segment break that was intended for commercials. And there's A LOT of those breaks, so be warned. Still, it doesn't ruin the overall experience.
If you love comedy that's insane, different, unpredictable, and "drop-to-the-ground" funny, then Jim Breuer is your guy. "Jim Breuer: Hardcore" is a must-have for all comedy fans. A very high replay value on this one. Check it out as soon as you can.Jim Breuer: Hardcore (2002) OverviewItem Name: Hardcore; Studio:Comedy Central

Nirvana - Live Tonight Sold Out (2006) ReviewI have to admit, at first, I didn't like this too much. It just seemed too messy and disjointed, as some of the live performances of certain tracks are like cut-and-paste collages featuring bits of footage taken from various different concerts and spliced together - sometimes within a single song. But, after watching this quite a few times, I started to appreciate the artistic quality in this -- as well as having fun watching these three in action.
This footage was mostly recorded during the 1991-1992 era during the release and popularity of their _Nevermind_ album, and as a result, you aren't going to hear any tracks beyond the _Nevermind_ era (_Incesticide_ was mostly recorded in 1990, but released in 1992, so that really doesn't count.) You get to witness the "backstage" or offstage antics of Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic, and as you witness their tomfoolery, you realize that these three "weirdos" were meant for each other, as they seem to be in sync with one another, without intent. You also get to hear their feelings on superstardom, witness some nifty performances and other such stuff.
Here's a listing of the live tracks performed on here:
(1). Aneurysm. (2). About A Girl. (3). Dive. (4). Love Buzz. (5). Breed. (6). Smells Like Teen Spirit. (7). Negative Creep. (8). Come As You Are. (9). Territorial Pissings. (10). Something In The Way . (11). Lithium. (12). Drain You. (13). Polly. (14). Sliver. (15). On A Plain. (16). Noise (which is basically comprised of bits from "Endless, Nameless," the hidden track on certain copies of _Nevermind_, added with destruction.)
Some things worth mentioning are: (1). The performance of "Something In The Way" is in a different key than the studio version, as well as being amped-up. (2). During the first clip of the "Love Buzz" performance, Kurt dives into the audience, possibly hoping to do some crowd surfing. It gets a little out of hand as the bouncer is trying to keep things organized, but he gets hit in the head by the body of Kurt's guitar quite a few times, which leaves a bit of a gash in the bouncer's head. I'm not sure if Kurt did this on purpose or not. But, after Kurt returns to the stage, the bouncer comes from behind and punches Kurt in the back of his head, and kicks him once. After that, the concert pretty much stops, as Krist comes to Kurt's defense, and soon Dave is seen flying from behind his drum kit to help out as well.
(3). Anyone wondering where all those concert clips seen in the video for "Lithium" came from, you can find them all on this set. (4). The ending features something Nirvana seemed to love to do: destroy their instruments and equipment. At the end, Krist does a little bit of batting practice - with musical instruments. Kurt chucks his guitar in the air, and when it lands, it breaks in half. Afterwards, Krist picks up the body of Kurt's broken guitar, and uses it as a baseball. He uses his bass as a bat, and chucks the body of the broken guitar in the air and tries to hit it. After a miss on the first shot, he hits on the second shot, and the audience applauds. Some really demented stuff.
Enough of my rambling. Case and point: if you're a Nirvana fan, you HAVE to own this. You get to see other sides of the members of Nirvana that you wouldn't have seen elsewhere. Plus with the fun footage, and performances, how can you go wrong?Nirvana - Live Tonight Sold Out (2006) OverviewOriginally conceived by Kurt Cobain, LIVE! TONIGHT!
