Sesame Street - Sing Along (1969) ReviewI like this tape a lot, even though it's dated (by Maria's big '80s hair!). Most of the singing takes place when the Sesame Street gang and a group of kids drag a piano up to the roof to have a sing-along with Bob and Big Bird. Workmen Biff and Sully just happen to be up there "fixing" a TV, where you get to see some terrific non-rooftop spots including Grover and the late great Madeline Kahn singing "Sing After Me," a sign-language enhanced "Sing," "We All Sing With The Same Voice," and "Doin the Pidgeon"
Maria, Gordon, Bob, Big Bird, Hoots the Owl and the kids all sing "John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt," "Old MacDonald Had A Farm,""Stand Up and Pinch Your Nose," the Alphabet song, a cute upbeat number by Big Bird called "Cheer Up" and, for a grand finale, my ultimate favorite Sesame Street song, "What's The Name Of That Song."
The production values in this tape are very simple - but the focus is on the characters and their voices. Everybody gets to be who they are. I recommend this one to anybody who likes the people on Sesame Street as well as the muppets.
P.S. The video cover is a little misleading: Ernie and Bert aren't part of the sing-along: they appear separately in "Doin the Pigeon" and "Rubber Ducky." A bit of trivia - this tape started its life as a Sesame Street episode.Sesame Street - Sing Along (1969) OverviewMovie DVD

For the Kids Three ReviewI own the first two For The Kids albums and love them. This third album is not so great. "The Lint Song" is so negative that it overshadows all the other songs. It talks about "your final date with death" and "I lacerate your throat and kick your face in half". Did Netwerk Music actually listen to "The Lint Song", by MC Lars, before they produced this cd? Sesame Street - Let's Make Music (1969) ReviewHurray for Sesame Street! They've made yet another video that appeals to all ages. Like many toddlers, the children in our household tend to watch the same video over and over and over again. They seem to thrive on repetition which is wonderful for their learning and growing (albeit sometimes a little irritating for the "older" family members). By including the rythmic geniuses of the Stomp! crew, they've managed to capture the attention and creativity of the toddlers and entertain the rest of the family as well.
Their use of simple, everyday objects as musical instruments was particularly appealing, especially in these days of heavy commercialism. We also enjoyed the dancing and the familiar Sesame Street characters. This video invites participation so there's no need to worry about the "couch potato effect."

Sesame Street - Do the Alphabet (2010) ReviewWe own this on DVD, purchased for a few bucks only--about all it is worth. We own most of the Sesame Street videos, including all the various "clips" collections like this one. I have to say "Do the Alphabet" is only one step above the dreadful "Elmocize." Okay, so I'm not the target audience--but my kids don't really care for it either!
From the worst period in Sesame Street production (in my opinion)--the late 80s/early 90s-- this video features Baby Bear trying to learn the alphabet in one day, so he can one-up the annoying Goldilocks (I kind of miss her, actually--she was at least comical, whereas contemporary Zoe is just bratty in an unamusing way).
Songs from Billy Joel and whatnot date this one--the best part is the "classic" Sesame clips, such as the Ernie/Cookie monster song about D (gotta love it!).
The most amusement I get from this DVD is that it stands out as one of the few muppet-involved videos when you can actually SEE the PUPPETEER! Watch Prairie Dawn during the "You Can Say The Alphabet" song . . . the crate and the kids do not quite cover the puppeteer's hand and head. You can see them over and over--something very rare in Sesame Street videos!
Bored parents can also watch for the rare sight of some of the Sesame kids arguing during a segment--watch Michael and the other boy when the kids are doing their letter "exercises"--too funny. Who was directing this? Had they stopped caring?
My kids, now age 5 and 3, would rank this very low for entertainment value. WE only pull it out when we've "done" the other Sesame Street videos to death. If you're shopping for a Sesame Street fan, go for one of the anniversary celebrations or the good ol' "Best of" tapes like "Best of Elmo," "Cookie Monster's Best Bites" etc.
I need to add here that I consider myself a big Sesame Street fan--I grew up with it, bought the "classic" tapes even before I had kids (does that make me a weirdo?), raised my kids on it. From babyhood, my kids knew their letters, numbers, shapes, colors, etc. very well, and Sesame Street had a big part in that. Beethoven Lives Upstairs (1992) ReviewOur family (girls ages 4 and 6) loved the CD by the same name so much that we bought the video too. We were impressed at the ability of the writers and director to rearrange the story and the music to fit a film version. I realized that I knew nothing of Beethoven and read his biography after viewing the video. Then I was really impressed to find how much accurate information about Beethoven's life was interwoven into the story. Although we prefer the CD version, I think that seeing the period costume and setting helped the girls place the story in an historical context. Here Come The 123s ReviewWe received this DVD/CD last week and the kids have been watching it over and over. Normally, I'd find this obsessive behavior concerning, but the educational quality of the video makes this one of the best DVD's I've seen for children. My kids are ages 6 & 8 and the video is geared so that both of them benefit from the lessons.
We really liked Here Come the ABCs [CD/DVD Combo], but we think this one is actually better. The music is well-composed and shows a great deal of musical sophistication underneath the silliness, playing with different musical styles and time signatures. The instructional value for the overall DVD is exceptional. My only complaint is that I can't get several of the tunes out of my head! Your kids will soon know that there are, in fact, animals with three eyes and be able to correctly identify a nonagon. Excellent video! I give it my highest recommendation.
