Grindhouse: Planet Terror ReviewAnyone who went to see Grindhouse and is now looking at the soundtrack for Planet Terror, I know exactly why you're either thinking of or already have purchased it. It's because of the main title theme. Quite possibly one of the coolest movie themes ever composed.
I'll spare you a detailed report of the CD. It's awesome. Possibly one of the best movie soundtracks ever composed, beats out the Sin City soundtrack... something I previously didn't think was possible. A must have for any music fans!Grindhouse: Planet Terror Overview"Grind House" - noun - A downtown movie theater -- indisrepair since its glory days as a movie palace of the '30s and '40s --known for "grinding out" non-stop double-bill programs of B-movies. Fromgroundbreaking directors Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez comes theultimate film experience: a double-bill of thrillers that will recall bothfilmmakers' favorite exploitation films. GRIND HOUSE will be presented asone full-length featurecomprised of two individual films helmed separately by each director.Tarantino's film, Death Proof, is a rip-roaring slasher flick where thekiller pursues his victims with a car rather than a knife, whileRodriguez's film explores an alien world eerily familiar to ours in PlanetTerror.Welcome to the grind house -- it'll tear you in two.The riveting score for GRIND HOUSE is by Rodriguez himself.

Hans Brinker or the Silver Skates (1962) ReviewThis movie was filmed for the Disney anthology TV series "Walt Disney's Wonderful World Of Color" (also known as "The Wonderful World Of Color") and was shown in two parts on January 7 & 14, 1962. The film was released theatrically outside the United States in 1964. I consider this film among Disney's best live-action films of its time.

The film is based on Mary Mapes Dodge's classic 1865 book of the same title. It is a shame that the book and film are both unknown by most people, because both are very special.

The story has everything I want in a film - characters I can admire and care about, who overcome numerous hardships and earn their happy ending.

The scenery is beautiful - filmed in the Zuider Zee area of Holland near the scenic communities of Comperduin and Volendam, as well as at Rembrandt's home in Amsterdam. The winter scenes for the skating races were filmed in Sweden.

The basic plot is of a brother and sister trying to win a skating race for money for their father's operation. He needs an operation due to brain damage from a head injury. The family is also desperately poor, because only the father knows where their savings are hidden - and he cannot remember. The story is full of adventure, hardship, mystery, and the love of a family for each other.

I first remember this film from seeing it on the Disney Channel in the mid 1980s. I have enjoyed watching the film numerous times over the years and am thrilled to finally have a chance to buy it on DVD.Hans Brinker or the Silver Skates (1962) Overview

Burn the Floor (1999) Review"Burn the Floor" (DVD), is a film of the stage play "Burn the Floor" and burn the floor they do. Wow! It's a year 2000 salute, a tribute to dancing couples. Many of the dances are interpretations, abstractions of the milestone dance styles of the 20th Century, performed by 23 couples, the world's newest crop of ballroom champions.
The choreography is brilliant and dazzling, with each couple sharing the limelight in individual routines, but somehow it works together, as one. A time machine that whisks the viewer back to the smooth waltz, Hollywood and Broadway of the thirties, the Lindy, Fred Astaire, World War II and Glenn Miller. Then the Jitterbug, Zoot Suit, Reet Pleat and right cuff to look sharp enough to see your Sunday gal. Holy Moly Batman, we eventually zoom back to the 21st Century.
"Hot", the finale, is a hand-clapping, finger snapping, mind boggling Mambo/Salsa of the 21st Century. It is all new, fresh, sexy, wet and hot. The music, the moves, the artistry of the dancers and the ambiance of the stage, draws the spellbound viewer into the action. After seeing this film, many will browse the Yellow Pages in search of dance lessons from their nearest studio. This DVD is a keeper: you can play it over and over and never tire of watching it.Burn the Floor (1999) OverviewBURN THE FLOOR - DVD Movie

Jim Henson Fantasy Film Collection (Labyrinth / The Dark Crystal / MirrorMask) (1982) ReviewOf course, we all remember Jim Henson for bringing us those fuzzy, adorable animal puppets and their variety show.
But Henson also produced some very memorable, intriguing fantasy films, and after his death his production company has continued that tradition. "The Jim Henson Family Film Collection" brings together three classic films from Henson and his company, as well as an accompanying book of unknown content.
"Labyrinth" becomes a problem for teenage Sarah, who is stuck babysitting her crying baby stepbrother. But when she idly wished that the goblins would steal him, she never expected it to happen -- or that the Goblin King Jareth (David Bowie) would challenge her if she tries to get her brother back.
Now Sarah has only thirteen hours to navigate a changing, hazardous maze, with Jareth's castle at the center of it. To find her way, she will have to befriend strange creatures and avoid lethal bogs, nasty fairies, head-jugglers, and finally Jareth himself -- or her brother will be turned into a goblin himself.
"The Dark Crystal" is the heart of this movie, where on another world, there are two strange races -- the enormous, gentle, peaceful Mystics, and the nasty, vulture-like, vicious Skekses. They are somehow connected to a massive crystal that was broken long ago, and now a shard is missing from it. What's more, three suns are about to come into conjunction, and the shard has to be back in place.
The Mystics have cared for one of the last Gelflings, an orphan named Jen. As the conjunction approaches, they send him out to find the lost shard. Along the way, Jen finds new friends who assist him in his quest, including another Gelfling. But can they avoid the Skekses? And what will happen when the suns line up, and the crystal is completed?
These movies were created in whole by Jim Henson, and even in the darker moments, they have his unmistakeable stamp. More recent -- and quite different in tone -- is "Mirrormask," which instead has the stamp of writer Neil Gaiman, and seems like a warped "Alice in Wonderland." But Henson's production company does a great job with all the weird special effects.
In "Mirrormask," we're introduced to Helena (Stephanie Leonidas), a young circus girl who longs for a "normal" life, and makes elaborate, otherworldly drawings. But one night her mother collapses, and needs life-saving surgery. The guilt-ridden Helena is suddenly whisked into a world that looks very like her drawings, where everyone has a mask -- and the beautiful queen of light (who looks a lot like Helena's mom) is in a coma.
Helena is determined to wake the queen, and gets juggler Valentine (Jason Barry) to accompany her on her quest for the mysterious Mirrormask. But the stakes become higher when the forces of darkness -- and their eerie queen -- target Helena, and she finds that a dark duplicate of herself has taken over her life. Now Helena must somehow defeat the dark forces, with her mother's life -- and her own -- hanging in the balance.
All three of these movies are classics of one type or another, and each embraces a different kind of fantasy. One is about wanting to be swept into an idyllic fantasy life. One is entirely of another world. And one is about the dangers of the other world.
To top it off, three are coming-of-age stories, whether for a teenage girl or a Muppet Gelfling -- they all focus on someone pursuing something that can save what is important to them, and growing as a person along the way. The scripting tends to be tight and a little wry. Sometimes it gets goofy, but well-acted (and in Bowie's case, well-sung).
What's more, the styles of each movie change: "Dark Crystal" is very fantastical and serious, even with some gross, dark parts, while "Labyrinth" is more kiddy-friendly and Muppety, with the little chivalrous fox (though Bowie's tight pants are a BIG distraction). And "Mirrormask" has a different style altogether, with lots of shadowy buildings, eerie lighting, fleshy masks, wide bodies and tentacle-like limbs.
The "Jim Henson Fantasy Films" are a good collection of films, showing off Henson's more fantastical side. Definitely worth seeing.Jim Henson Fantasy Film Collection (Labyrinth / The Dark Crystal / MirrorMask) (1982) Overview

Big River: The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn (1985 Original Broadway Cast) ReviewIf you are going to be audacious enough to try and make a musical of Huckleberry Finn, then choosing Roger Miller of "King of the Road" fame to write the songs is certainly an inspired move. "Big River," the Tony Award winning musical, owes as much to Miller as it does to Mark Twain for writing the classic story in the first place. Of course when you are talking Roger Miller you are talking fun songs, from John Goodman's ripping diatribe on "Guv'ment" as Huck's Pappy and Tom Sawyer's (John Short) "Hand for the Hog" to the two songs by the King (Bob Gunton) and the Duke (Rene Auberjonois), "When the Sun Goes Down in the South" and "The Royal Nonesuch" ("She's got one big breast in the middle of her chest/And an eye in the middle of her nose/So says I, if you look her in the eye/You're better off looking up her nose"). Even when Miller offers us the tender country ballad, "You Oughta Be Here with Me," Mary Jane Wilkes (Patti Cohenour, who later went on to play Christine in "Phantom of the Opera" on Broadway) sings the song to her father's coffin. "The Crossing" is a nice spiritual, but clearly the best songs are reserved for the Huck (Daniel Jenkins) and Jim (Ron Richardson): "Muddy Water," as they shove off on a raft for Freedom, "River in the Rain" as they spend their last moments alone on the river, and "World's Apart" as the recognize the gulf that exists between them. They also do a trio with Mary Jane on "Leavin's Not the Only Way to Go." The only shortcoming of this musical comes at the end, when we get to the greatest passage in American Literature, when Huck declares he will help Jim to freedom even if it means going to hell; Miller offers a reprise of "Waitin' for the Light to Shine" rather than coming up with a new song to capture this epic moment. Similarly, Jim's "Free at Last" echoes too much of the old spiritual instead of offering something more unique. However, while this is somewhat disappointing it is not entirely unsatisfying, and I do not mean to downplay Miller's monumental success with this score. After all, Leonard Bernstein never came up with a final aria for Maria at the end of "West Side Story," and that did not take away from the greatness of that musical. At the end of "Big River" what stands out are the moments between Huck and Jim captured in song; those are the ones you are going to want to hear over and over. With his wide variety of songs for this show, Miller perfectly matched the breadth of Twain's writings. It is a monumental achievement and a lasting legacy for Miller, who proved himself to be a writer of much more than novelty hits.Big River: The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn (1985 Original Broadway Cast) OverviewNo Description AvailableNo Track Information AvailableMedia Type: CDArtist: BIG RIVERTitle: ORIGINAL CASTStreet Release Date: 06/23/1988

Songs of Sanctuary ReviewThis album is hard to describe because I havent heard anyting like it. Once could describe it as classical music meets "new age". The closest thing that comes to mind would be Enya.

The music in this album is varied. For myself, I really enjoyed the first 5 songs on the album (hard to say which I like best, perhaps Adiemus or In Caelum Fero??). Several of the songs have a variety of sounds where the music style changes quite a bit (start slow, get faster, and so on).

However the most unique feature of this album is that the words are made up (check out the website). That's right ... the words were chosen to flow with the music. The composer loves the sound of the human voice (what a wonderful instrument!) and uses it well in this album. I find the tunes very relaxing, and listen to them if Im trying to concentrrate (since the words are gibberish, I dont try to translate them).

If you are a big Enya fan, perhaps another Adiemus album, "Adiemus IV: The Eternal Knot" is more your speed since it has a distinctive Celtic flair. Overall this is a very enjoyable album if you enjoy classical new age combinations.Songs of Sanctuary OverviewRemastered Super Audio (hybrid) CD edition of 1995 album for ethno-classical project of composer/conductor Karl Jenkins (Soft Machine). Nine tracks featuring Miriam Stockley on vocals & The London Philharmonic. Will play on CD & SACD players. Virgin. 2003.--This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

Hello Kitty Becomes a Princess (1987) ReviewThe cartoons are from the 1980's Hello Kitty tv series "Hello Kitty's Furry Tale Theater," which are variations on popular fairy tales/movies. They feature Hello Kitty, My Melody, Tuxedo Sam, Chip, Catnip & Grinder, who are actors in the theatre.
Each DVD contains 5 fairy tales, and each fairy tale is about 10 minutes long and has its own unique take on the familiar stories. They are also changed to be less violent, nicer and more suited for children (water balloon fights instead of guns).
The quality of the DVD's are more like TV broadcast quality and this is the reason I've given it 4 stars instead of 5. I think they could've enhanced the quality before putting it onto DVD. It is also not recorded in stereo sound. I already owned the 2 Furry Tale Theater VHS's (Kitty and the Beast, The Wizard of Paws), so I already knew what to expect.
I'm an adult Sanrio collector and I loved seeing these episodes, and I would feel good about letting my children see these too.
The following is the list of the episodes in this DVD:
"Hello Kitty Becomes a Princess" has Kitty and the Beast, Snow White Kitty and the One Dwarf, Sleeping Kitty, CinderKitty, and KittyLocks and the Three Bears.Hello Kitty Becomes a Princess (1987) Overview

Pippi Longstocking (2005) ReviewWhen I was little I loved the Pippi Longstocking movies (in Germany), now my kids love them. Since they're educated trilingual we have the series in German, Dutch and English. The truest one seems to be the German version (well, the movies were a German/Swedish production), the Dutch is pretty good too, although some of the voices are far too squeeky. The English version is well translated but edited a lot and even put together in another order! Still, Pippi rules. Playmobil: The Secret of Pirate Island (2009) ReviewThe toy line known as Playmobil produced by Germany-based company Brandstatter Group has been a popular toyline in the United States and other countries since 1975. The toys have been one of the most innovative toylines for children as kids can buy toys based on modern jobs or athletes to pirates, knights, princesses and more.
An example of the popular playmobil toyline toys in the market
And to celebrate the popularity of the toyline, the first major DVD release titled "The Secret of Pirate Island" based on the toyline will be released under the playmobil interactive name.
In this DVD, the film revolves around a family which includes seven-year-old Jack and his older sister as they visit their grandparents. Of course, the area where their grandparents live leads to a portal where the children can experience adventures. In this latest release, the playmobil theme revolves around the pirate characters.
But in this case, using your remote control, the viewer can select which adventure to participate in. The decision can lead to an early ending to the film or a further continuation to the story. Of course, since this is a children's DVD, even if a child choose a short ending, the child will get another chance to select the other ending or if they choose not to choose anything at all, the film will automatically select the longer, continuing version. But what's so fun about this release is that there is 27 story combinations. So, for the most part, children will enjoy the chance to choose their storyline and possibly see the toy characters that they may be familiar with.
For parents, there are two versions that you can select on the menu. The interactive version of "The Secret of Pirate Island" which is more or less 90 minutes long depending on the combinations selected or "Captain Gruff's Favorite Movie" minus the interactive combinations and the movie is about 50 minutes long.
VIDEO & AUDIO:
"The Secret of Pirate Island" is a 3D CG film featuring vibrant colors and captures the toyline in CG format quite well. The kids looks like the toys and the hands are like the toys but they are animated to show expression and also designed to show the characters like it's plastic counterparts. Granted, this is not a high-budget CG film, so don't expect hyper-detailed backgrounds or environments but for the most part, the animation for this title is well-done. Video is featured via anamorphic widescreen at 1:78:1.
As for audio, the film is presented in English 5.1 Dolby Digital and French Dolby Surround. For those with home theaters, the film is front and center channel driven as the movie is dialogue and music-driven.
Subtitles are in English, French and Spanish.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
"playmobile interactive - The Secret of Pirate Island" comes with only two special features:
* Pirate Sing-a-Long - (1:53) One of the songs used on the film featuring the band (on the pirate ship) performing a song with the lyrics ala karaoke sing along at the bottom.
* Previews - Previews for Sony Wonder releases
JUDGMENT CALL:
As a guy who grew up with playmobil toys and my son having quite a bit of a collection for himself, I found this DVD release to be quite wonderful.
The world of playmobil and the characters and the look of the characters is animated quite well and for parents looking for an interactive film, "The Secret of Pirate Island" was absolutely fantastic as there are many scenes that require the children to make a decision (there are 27 story combinations) and thus, works quite well for the child or for parents watching along with their children.
For families wondering if the film can be scary, not at all. The theme is adventure-based and there is a scene with an octopus, a mummy and skeletons but for the most part, it's never scary at all. They are animated in a way to be not offending whatsoever. So, parents shouldn't worry at all. It's a family friendly film. My 6-year-old, wasn't scared at any of the scenes and for the most part, he was really getting involved with the interactive segments.
If there is anything that I do recommend is that if you have a DVD player that has a remote that needs to be closely focused towards their player, have your child positioned in a way where the signal is clear, so he/she doesn't complain about the remote not working correctly. The interactive version of the film does give adequate time to make a decision but it's important that a child holds the remote correctly and that the remote has a clear signal.
For the playmobil collectors or parents wondering if the film is only pirate-themed, there are combinations that takes both Jack and Amelia to a medieval time or playing in their grandparents yard but those scenes are very short. The film is definitely pirate-themed and since I typically see the pirated-themed toys at the stores, I'm guessing it's a big seller for playmobil but I do hope there are more playmobil interactive releases that reflect their other toylines, which would definitely be wonderful.
There's really nothing bad I can say about this DVD, for parents who are looking for a children's interactive film on DVD, this is one of the better ones that I have seen thus far. I wish there were interactive games included on the special features but overall, for its low price and what is included on this DVD, "playmobil interactive - The Secret of Pirate Island" is highly recommended!Playmobil: The Secret of Pirate Island (2009) OverviewAhoy, matey!Your favorite Playmobil toys have come to life for the very first time, in an all-new swashbuckling adventure and you're invited to join them! You'll have a treasure chest full of fun with seven-year-old Jack and his big sister Amelia as they stow away on a pirate ship headed for the mysterious Skull Island - a place filled with treasure and curious creatures. Can Jack and Amelia stay one step ahead of a bunch of wacky skeletons and get to the treasure before the pirates do?Interactive DVD includes:Interactive video version (approx. 90 mins); Captain Gruff's Favorite Movie (approx. 50 mins) and a Pirate Sing-A-Long.

Thomas & Friends: The Great Discovery (2009) ReviewWe saw this movie in the theater (it is showing in July in various states). The screenplay was really well written and the movie was really well done. Pierce Brosnan is a superb narrator and does some really great engine voices; he is the best Thomas narrator yet. Even my husband enjoyed it, and he generally dislikes watching Thomas (I think it was partly the James Bond connection with Pierce, and partly how well the movie was done). The storyline: Thomas accidentally discovers an abandoned town on Sodor. A new engine (Stanley) is called in to do Thomas' work while Thomas supervises the restoration of the discovered town ...Stanley is a really nice, fun, hard-working engine and doesn't mean any ill will whatsoever towards Thomas....and Thomas ends up becoming very jealous of Stanley and how well he works and gets along with the other engines & characters (including Percy and Annie & Clarabel). By the end of the movie Stanley and Thomas become friends and both can see how the other engine must have felt. Great starting point for discussing jealousy and how to handle it with your preschooler.Thomas & Friends: The Great Discovery (2009) Overview
