Chet Baker - Live at Ronnie Scott's (1986) ReviewThe production quality of this obscure taping of a jazz legend's performance is remarkable. Even the interview of Chet is well-done. Several observations: The audience obviously came to hear these "marquee" performers and not Chet. Notice the applause levels. I imagine most of them had no idea who Chet Baker. But for a thirty-plus-year fan of Chet Baker this video was certainly a bargain. What a unique and wonderful musician. Tarzan - The Broadway Musical (Original Broadway Cast) ReviewFirst of all, I have to say that I love the movie soundtrack. Ironically, the movie songs here are by far the best ones. And, surprisingly enough, Tarzan's singing (Josh Strickland) is the strongest. Kerchak's (sp?) voice is plain annoying and Jane sounds like a past-her-prime Julie Andrews. Animals Are Beautiful People (1974) ReviewThis documentary is covers the wildlife of Southern Africa. The animals are introduced in a very entertaining way, with a story about each that kids can really relate to eg the duck who pretends to be injured to distract the hyena away from her babies, the daddy ostrich protecting his eggs, the chimps who cartwheel down the hill, the fish who swallows her young to keep them safe. Along the way there is footage of other animals who are just interesting to look at. The photography is often stunning and the classical music score fits it well. The pace is quite quick, which is good as it holds a child's attention.
I bought this DVD for my five year old son because I remember seeing and loving the movie as a child. I wasn't sure how the movie would have aged, but it still looks pretty good. Now that I'm older I can spot flaws that I missed as a child - scenes that have clearly been set up by the filmmakers or edited together from different pieces of footage. This doesn't detract from its appeal as a family movie.
If you're a wildlife purist who is after a serious documentary, this isn't for you. But if you want an entertaining introduction to African wildlife, it's perfect. The reviewer who complains about the way that clouds are personalised is missing the point - this is a film that speaks to a child's imagination. My son loves it, although some of it is over his head and I can tell he'll get more out of it when he's a couple of years older. Nevertheless, I'm happy to have weaned him off Nick Jnr for a while!Animals Are Beautiful People (1974) OverviewFrom the creator of The Gods Must Be Crazy. The Book of Mormon ReviewI am a Mormon. I served an LDS mission to NYC, am still active in the church and I love this musical.
Don't think that I represent the church (or even many of the members). Yes, this is full of offensive things and dirty language, but you were expecting that, weren't you? They take some liberties with the beliefs of the LDS faith, but in general, these are things we believe (they did get the facts right for the song 'I Believe' at least).
And at least the music agrees with the official Church statement in one respect: "This is the most amazing book; you won't believe how much it will change your life." Though they do poke fun at the religion, they somehow do it respectfully. Don't forget, they say some very offensive things, but I think those shots are aimed to offend everyone, not just Mormons. That distinction is where the magic lies. I explained the plot to my extremely devout grandmother and even she had a chuckle. However, I wouldn't recommend that she listen to it because, as stated, it is explicit!
So down to the music: this is hands-down one of the best scores ever written. Forget Phantom. Hasa Diga Les Miserables. If you have an ear for catchy music and are familiar with the South Park crew, do yourself a favor and get this album.The Book of Mormon Overview
