The Films of Kenneth Anger, Vol. 2 (2007) ReviewKenneth Anger, Volume Two gathers together Kenneth Anger's work during his most influential period. "Scorpio Rising" is the standout, a homoerotic (daring by the standards of the day)semi-documentary (play the commentary) of gay bikers in Coney Island which through use of montage and then current pop songs, some sacreligious elements (a dated religious film is spliced in) and film footage of Hollywood movies (Marlon Brando in the "Wild One", James Dean)creates an avant masterwork, underground before the genre became tedious. Influential on John Waters Gus Van Sant but surprisingly an admitted influence on Martin Scorcese and many other mainstream film makers (the use of the song "Blue Velvet" in an out of context fashion may have been lifted by a certain film maker) and the use of pop songs in an ironic context was groundbreaking. The other films are less important ("Kustom Kar Kommandos" is a film fragment never completed, "Invocation of My Demon Brother" is dated (Mick Jagger unsuccesfully trying out the Moog, soundtrack, the appearence of Anton Levay), "Rabbit's Moon" is a shortened version of the far better version available on Volume I (which had a far more appropriate soundtrack) and "Lucifer Rising" has its moments and nice imagery but no more (the new film on Aleister Crowley "The Man We Want to Hang" is an interesting bonus but no surprise). So for overall content I'd give this 4 stars but "Scorpio Rising", plus the remastering of the films and soundtracks and the commentary take this up one full star and make this a neccessary purchase for all interested in film history. The Films of Kenneth Anger, Vol. 2 (2007) OverviewCinematic magician, legendary provocateur, author of the infamous HOLLYWOOD BABYLON books and creator of some of the most striking and beautiful works in the history of film, Kenneth Anger is a singular figure in post-war American culture.A major influence on everything from the films of Martin Scorsese, Rainer Werner Fassbinder and David Lynch to the pop art of Andy Warhol to MTV, Anger's work serves as a talisman of universal symbols and personal obsessions, combining myth, artifice and ritual to render cinema with the power of a spell or incantation.Covering the second half of Anger's career, from his legendary SCORPIO RISING to his breathtaking phantasmagoria LUCIFER RISING, Fantoma is very proud to complete the cycle with this long-awaited final volume of films by this revolutionary and groundbreaking maverick, painstakingly restored and presented on DVD for the first time anywhere in the world.Contains the films:Scorpio Rising (1964)Kustom Kar Kommandos (1965)Invocation of My Demon Brother (1969)Rabbit's Moon (1979 version)Lucifer Rising (1981)

Blind Eye Sees All, Live 1985 (1985) ReviewThis 1985 live video documents the mighty Surfers during their "Cream Corn" era. What you get is our heroes merrily thrashing through their early classics while Gibby tears apart things and dances about. This is a professionally-shot and varied document that looks good, and this also documents the double-drumming unit and short-time bassist Trevor Malcolm playing a gigantic tuba. As amazing as these moments are, the highlight is the incredible interview with the band (all in one giant bed smokin' and drinkin'), wherein Gibby delivers some typically awesome words of wisdom.
This DVD version is superior to the original video cassette: the sound is clearer and the picture's sharper. In addition to the new features (including a "Butthole Karaoke," which finally displays lyrics to songs like "Lady Sniff"), all the extras from the original video appear here. The 7" alternate version of the song "American Woman" (which came with the tape) is incorporated in its entirety on the DVD when you access the Gallery, and the "bonus footage" that originally appeared on the video cassette several minutes after the video ended is even placed as hidden feature. Heck, even the Touch and Go Video logo appears in the credits! (How'd that one get by?)
My only complaint about the document is that I would have really liked to see the band's 1986-and-on years, in which they started played appalling movies of surgeries and accidents on a film screen projector behind them while Gibby set objects on fire. But make no mistake, "Blind Eye Sees All" is stellar all the way, and it's now made available again after many years of elusiveness. If you appreciate the genius of the Butthole Surfers, get this immediately. And if you don't "get" them, it's your loss.Blind Eye Sees All, Live 1985 (1985) Overview

The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Say It (Audience Participation Album) ReviewThis is the definitive account of the late-night phenomenon, recording in 1981. These two discs feature the entire film, music and dialoge, with "participation" including a lot of very funny, and very caustic remarks from the audience. One especially interesting thing about this CD is that it features the original mixes of the songs, which no longer appear on any circulating print or video of the movie. Noticeable differences are heard in "Frankenstein Place," "Time Warp," "Sweet Transvestite" and "Floor Show."The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Say It (Audience Participation Album) Overview

Brazil: Music From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack ReviewMichael Kamen's score for Brazil is sweeping, soaring, and captures all of the hopeful longing of the protagonist dreamer of the film. Any fan of Erich Wolfgang Korngold will love Kamen's symphonic rendition of the title song, which plays throughout. I don't normally care for dialogue provided on a soundtrack (for instance, the overbearing voice-overs on Hans Zimmer's Hannibal soundtrack or the sometimes unnecessary dialogue on Vangelis' Blade Runner soundtrack), however I didn't mind so much for the dialogue on this soundtrack. Recommended for anyone who enjoys grand, sweeping film scores.Brazil: Music From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Overview

Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson (Soundtrack) ReviewWhat a wonderful snapshot of the work, passion, and attitude of Hunter S. Thompson. Even when he misses the mark, for my money, you can't go wrong with HST.
The glue that holds this compilation together is soundbites of Hunter himself and his old friend Johnny Depp reading some of his brilliant writings.
For the most part, this is a great collectin of wonderful songs that inspired the man and, perhpaps, the madness.
My two beefs are:
1 - As Johnny Depp and Douglas Brinkley boldly point out in their well-written liner notes, WHY-WHY-WHY is Hot Chocolate's "You Sexy Thing" on here?!?!?!? This is almost an unforgiveable sin regarding an otherwise excellent representation of HST.
2 - As other reviewers have pointed out, the most glaring omission is Spirit in the Sky. The song was vital to both the Gonzo documentary and to HST himself. I understand that legal issues sometimes prevent music from being released in certain fashions, but it would have been the cherry on the top of this compilation.
Other than those two complaints (#1 an UNforgiveable one, and #2 a bit more understandable), this is a wonderful collection. Feel the vibes and take Hunter's words to heart.Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson (Soundtrack) Overview

The Lost Boys (1987) ReviewAs one of two teenage vampire movies released in 1987, (the other was the miserable "Near Dark")"The Lost Boys," is a hip, modern retelling of the vampire myth set in a Southern California setting. Brothers Michael (Patric) and Sam (Haim) are the newcomers to the small seaside town of Santa Clara, which is known as the murder capital of the world due to the mysterious disappearances of many town residents.
At the town's amusement park, Michael gets himself involved with a gang of vampires, who appear as normal street punks. Meanwhile Sam, meets the Frog Brothers, who run a comic book store at night, but are vampire hunters by day. After Michael himself becomes a vampire due to drinking the blood of a vampire, he is determined to find a way to save himself, the girl he loves, and his family from the impending danger that lurks them.
Directed by Joel Schumacher ("Batman Forever," "Batman & Robin," "Flatliners," etc.), the film's appeal to teenagers is due to its young cast, great soundtrack, and great, yet campy storyline. Dianne Wiest is excellent as Michael and Sam's mother, and Kiefer Sutherland in one of his first major roles is wicked as David, the leader of the gang.
Keep an eye out for a pre-"Bill & Ted's Excellent Adveture" Alex Winter as Marco, one of the vampires. This film also marked the first collaboration of the two Cories, Cory Haim & Cory Feldman, in a string of movies they made together in the 1980's ("License to Drive," "Dream A Little Dream," etc.) that capitalized on their teen-idol status. Reportedley, Jason Patric (who is Jackie Gleason's grandson) hates it when fans mention this movie as one of his best works, but the truth is it still remains one of the late 1980's cult classics.
If you like a funny, yet scary movie in the same tradition as "Scram," then check out this movie. It gave me many memories watching it on DVD as it did when I first saw it at the theater. The Lost Boys (1987) OverviewStrange events threaten an entire family when two brothers move with their divorced mother to a California town where the local teenage gang turns out to be a pack of vampires.DVD Features:Production NotesTheatrical Trailer

Twin Peaks (Season One TV Soundtrack) Review"My (musical) world is a little bit dark. . . a little bit off-center. I think of it as tragically beautiful. That is how I would describe what I love best: tragically beautiful." Angelo Badalamenti
Today's working hypothesis is no composer was ever more important to the success of a television show than Angelo Badalamenti was for his work on the David Lynch televison cult hit "Twin Peaks" (1990-91).
The criteria here is not just coming up with a memorable instrumental theme song (in which case we just pick Lalo Schifrin for "Mission Impossible"), but the scoring of various episodes over the course of several seasons. By that standard what is the competition? Jan Hammer's work on "Miami Vice" got a lot of publicity, but when you think of the soundtrack for that show you are just as likely to think of Glenn Frey's "Smuggler's Blues" and Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight" as you are the show's theme song or other incidental music. For me the close second would be w.g. snuffy walden's work on "thirtysomething," but that superb work (especially "second look") never received the publicity that Badalamenti did with "Twin Peaks" (Population 51,201).
Besides the memorable main theme you have the haunting "Laura Palmer's Theme" and the quirky little "Dance of the Dream Man." The former was used in different variations to different effects throughout the series, eloquently underscoring the twists and turns in the search for her killer. Even when David Lynch writes some lyrics for Julee Cruise to sing, the mood produced by the music never changed. It is amazing to me how you could always be aware of what Badalamenti was doing while watching "Twin Peaks," yet the music never becomes intrusive or overwhelming. Instead it is a perfect compliment to the story and pictures. And remember:
That gum you like, it's coming back in style...Twin Peaks (Season One TV Soundtrack) Overview

The Lords of Flatbush (1974) Review"The Lord's Of Flatbush" was made on a budget of less than $100,000 prior to any of its stars becoming household names. Derivative of other similar and better movies it has still managed to garner a strong cult following in the years since its release. Technically crude, the film has a grainy quality and some scenes are very badly lit; most of the movie seems fuzzy and unfocused. Speech suffers the worst as it is very soft and distant in different spots throughout the film. That's too bad because the filmmakers display a good use of color and the period detail and flavor are among the best of its kind. But that's not what keeps this movie from achieving all it could have - the main culprit here is the story, what little there is.
Circa 1957, in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn, New York where four high school seniors are the self-styled members of a group calling themselves The Lord's Of Flatbush. Stanley, their self-proclaimed leader, Butchey, Chico and Wimpy hassle girls on their way into school, disrupt classrooms, steal cars, stay out all night...in general they behave recklessly and typically disrespectful. Stanley gets a wakeup call when his girlfriend announces to him she's pregnant. He tries to avoid 'doing the right thing', preferring to continue to display the image he's long played out. Chico spends all his time trying to have his way with the new blond girl in class, Jane. She's too smart and well-bred for him to con though and this irritates and eats away at him. Butchey gets called a schmuck by Eddie the proprietor of the Lord's local hangout - not because he's a fool Eddie says but because he's got brains and he could be something if he wanted to be. Wimpy continues to feel the need to prove himself 'a man' because he's so much shorter than everyone around him. The characters come full circle by the end of the movie at Stanley's & Frannie's wedding having each had to face up to their own immaturity and are now ready to move on with life after high school.
That's it in a nutshell. There really isn't much happening onscreen as far as a story goes. Another weakness is that the transitions between scenes aren't very smooth; the episodic and choppy storyline is the reason why. Still, you can clearly see the movie building up to the point where the four main characters each realize that the 'wiseguy' persona they display aren't going to get them very far in life. Stanley (played by Sylvester Stallone) finally agrees to marry Frannie; even after he discovers she's not really pregnant he still determines to marry her because he thinks his life will be a dead end if he doesn't. After Chico (Perry King) gets over the shock and anger of being rejected by Jane (Susan Blakely) he moves on as well, wanting to forget the whole episode even happened. Butchey (Henry Winkler) silently dreams of going to college but still isn't comfortable sharing that thought with anyone yet; or it could be that his pals have known all along - the film leaves that up to you to decide. Wimpy doesn't really progress much but without the presence of his three Lord's members playing out their roles around him he'll have to make it on his own and in his own way.
There are a few other problems I had with this film besides the main one I mentioned. How is it that King's character Chico can afford a top of the line Harley Davidson motorcycle? It isn't established at all but I got the sense his mother bought it for him - there is the ever so slightest hint she may be 'comfortably well-off'. Also too much time is spent spotlighting Chico, a tired stereotypical teen whose sole aim in life is to make out. Speaking of 'teens' all of the actors here are clearly too old for their roles; most of them are ten years older than the characters they play (kind of like TV's "Happy Days" in that respect!). Stallone too obviously patterned much of his characterization on roles played by Marlon Brando early in his career. His character's name is Stanley (Brando's character name in 'A Streetcar Named Desire' is Stanley Kowalski), he raises pigeons on the rooftop of his tenement dwelling (Brando's character Terry Malloy does so too in 'On The Waterfront'), etc. Stallone's no Brando but he is likable here nonetheless. Winkler's character Butchey appears with the rest of the gang in the scenes at the opening credits but then disappears for nearly the next thirty minutes and gets precious little time after that. He's quite good here as a 'Fonzie' wannabe - no one needs an introduction to television and "Happy Days" legendary character 'Fonzie'. He made this movie in the year preceding initial production for that TV series; his work here probably helped him win the part. Also the film lacks any genuine humor; most of the scenes meant to make us laugh have been played out before in other movies, it just isn't fresh. The film's best joke: Frannie confides to Annie her embarrassment of having to tell the priest about her impending pregnancy. Annie responds to her "So what. Why do you think they call the church 'Our Lady Of A Thousand Sorrows'?"
Still, the positives of "The Lord's Of Flatbush" are what continue to make it's fans come to it's defense in numbers. The directors have captured the look and feel of late 50's Brooklyn fantastically - especially considering the minimal budget they worked with. And without a doubt what has kept this movie in circulation is the presence of a handful of future stars. Stallone would go on to world-wide fame with both the series of 'Rocky' films and later on the series of 'Rambo' films. Likewise, Winkler went on to fame and fortune as 'Fonzie' as was already mentioned; he's quite busy as a producer of both television and movies as well these days. King has gained a respectable reputation appearing as a star or supporting player in such cult hits as "Andy Warhol's Bad", "Slaughterhouse Five", "The Possession Of Joel Delaney" and "Class Of '84". Blakely gained a huge public following after her appearance in the smash hit, trendsetting TV mini-series 'Rich Man, Poor Man'. I think what also helps this movie is that it came out on the heels of the success of 'American Graffiti' and at the tail end of the first season broadcast of "Happy Days". It already had a market to tap into and the film has remained in the thoughts of those who saw it then - most of its defenders seem to be from this general time frame.
The DVD is a limited package containing only the usual theatrical trailer, talent files and a couple of teasers for the movies 'Bugsy' and 'La Bamba'. An introduction to the film by the directors or a remembrance of the time spent making the picture by some of the actors involved would have helped. It would give the film an extra punch that is sorely lacking. I'm sure Columbia did the best job they could with the transfer; the original source couldn't have been better than what we're given here. The Lords of Flatbush (1974) OverviewLORDS OF FLATBUSH - DVD Movie

The Hunger (1983) ReviewI saw 'The Hunger' when it was in the movie theatre in 1983. I didn't know what to expect but David Bowie's presence in the film made me go into the theatre.Esthetics! Esthetics! Esthetics! Beautiful people, beautiful set, beautiful music wrapped into the warm womb of blood sucking and immortality and escapism. The storyline doesn't move me, though every performance is stellar. I never develop any empathy for the characters, though I would like to sit down and have lunch with them (on the condition I'm not on the desert menu.)This is the kind of film one might call a guilty pleasure. No social or intellectual message or value, but imprints itself upon the emotional psyche. It provides a window into another side of one's usual self. Do I believe in vampires and the creature feature scifi world, no. But it can be fun.The dvd quality is excellent. Much better transfer than the video we've had all these years. Really glad it's available and in our film library. Enjoy this world where beauty and pointlessness meet for no other reason than to entertain you.The Hunger (1983) OverviewHUNGER - DVD Movie
