Jim Breuer: Hardcore (2002) ReviewAnytime you see stand-up comedian Jim Breuer take the stage, you know it's going to be a good time. It's not just a regular night of stand-up, it's a all-out crazy party! Jim Breuer takes no prisoners in this Comedy Central Special, "Jim Breuer: Hardcore."
You almost get exhausted by just watching him run around the stage like a madman. There is hardly a second that goes by where you're not laughing hysterically. In this special, Breuer talks about music, drugs, growing up, being a father, being married, and more. There's also a band that Jim travels around with when he performs, which really separates this comedy special from the rest.
The DVD has a few special features, such as never-aired performance segments and two segments from Jim's first Comedy Central performance. It's not a lot, but for a comedy special DVD, those are some really cool extras.
The only major drawback is the breaks in where the commercials would usually separate the show if you were watching it on cable. It kind of ruins the flow at times. You would really be getting into it all and then all of the sudden there's a little segment break that was intended for commercials. And there's A LOT of those breaks, so be warned. Still, it doesn't ruin the overall experience.
If you love comedy that's insane, different, unpredictable, and "drop-to-the-ground" funny, then Jim Breuer is your guy. "Jim Breuer: Hardcore" is a must-have for all comedy fans. Mitch All Together (W/Dvd) ReviewMitch Hedberg has long been a bit of a cult-comic, having made numerous appearances on The Late Show with David Letterman & Howard Stern. In the late 90s Hedberg was courted by several networks for a sitcom and heralded by Time Magazine as "the next Seinfeld," due to his growing popularity and offbeat observational style of humor, but no sit-com ever materialized and Hedberg continued to build up his cult status on the road. His laidback style and unique one-liner deliveries made him both a favorite of his fellow comedians and on college campuses even though he didn't get mainstream recognition.
This is Mitch's second and final comedy CD (Hedberg died in March 2005 from a heartattack). But he left us with an outstanding CD that has 40minutes worth of great material. Mitch took a few of his good jokes from his first CD and made them into outstanding jokes on this CD. The title is taken from a joke on his first album, which he really should've included again on this one. Mitch's first comedy CD was flawed and stilted, but practice makes perfect and Mitch fires on all cylinders for this CD with expert timing and deliveries. Weapons of Self Destruction (2010) ReviewI had the privilege of seeing this show live. We were originally supposed to see it in March but it was postponed because right before our original date because he had his heart surgery. As a result, we saw the show in October.
I had been laid off for the second time in a year the day of the show and I almost was too depressed to go. But I had been waiting soooo long to see him and spent so much money on the tickets that we went.
The show is definitely different than some of his earlier shows -- he worked in a lot of material about his heart surgery and aging in general and it made him seem more "human". However, in typical Robin manner -- it was so frenetic and off the wall that I still laughed so hard I ached by the end of the show. Most of the audience seemed like we were all around Robin's age so we are all on a similar journey in terms of aging.
Most of the material in this show isn't about the wild and whacky early days of youth where you act crazy because you believe you are indestructable. Rather the material comes from someone who has been through that stage and lived to tell about it and recognizes his own mortality and all that goes along with the natural aging process.
Maybe that doesn't sound like funny stuff -- but Robin Williams makes it funny and allows you to laugh at yourself and the aging process which is a relief. It is sort of like -- you can either whine and moan about getting older or your can laugh at yourself. I know I would much rather laugh and revel in the shared experience that all of us boomers are going through.
Other themes that he touches on are the economy (again, making you laugh at the absurdity that got us here just as Jon Stewart of the Daily Show makes you laugh), some politics, and just generally absurd tangents in a way that is Trademark Robin Williams...
If you have followed Robin Williams career from the days of Mork (which means you are old enough to have aged with him and lived through the decades with him), then I think you will enjoy this DVD. If you are expecting his previous style of "free association" comedy that you might have seen snippets of but where you don't know the "history", then you may be disappointed (as the first reviewer obviously was).
Great artists evolve. Robin Williams has evolved but he has definitely aged well and if you want a chance to laugh at yourself and the aging process -- you will find yourself worn out with laughter after viewing this DVD.
As I said, I was almost too depressed to even go to this show. However, after I left, I felt so much better because I had laughed so long and so hard. Laughter truly is the best medicine and Robin Williams is the best "practitioner" of this medicine in my humble opinion!!

Eddie Izzard: Dress to Kill (1999) ReviewI stumbled over this strange transvestite comedian several years ago, I believe during a Comic Relief program. I didn't really remember him, but slowly he started popping up everywhere on cable, including a (staged) crashing of Monty Python's induction at the Apsen Comdey Festival.
Then one night, I caught his HBO special, "Dressed to Kill," and laughed so hard it hurt. Eddie has an amazing skill of blending history, religion and his own personal experiences into a hillarious two-hour stream-of-consciousness. I have watched the special several times (I got smart enough to tape it) and each time I catch a new joke or bit that I missed last time. He is one of the funniest stand up comics I've ever seen and his observations are always dead on. I especially liked his observations on Hitler, and how we'll tolerate dictators who kill their own people; it's only after they start killing people in other countries that we object.
If you haven't seen the phenomenon that is Eddie Izzard, then get either a copy of this special or "Glorious," the only other Eddie Izzard special on video. And be prepared to laugh.
