Jimi Hendrix - Live at Woodstock (1999) ReviewJimi Hendrix at Woodstock is disputabily the greatest concert ever given. I am an avid Hendrix fan and was elated to see this DVD. This is by far the best DVD I have and shows Hendrix at his greatest. Izabella is revolutionary, Fire is rock solid, Red House is great (Jimi broke his high E string), his Woodstock Improvisation is incredible and his Star Spangled Banner is priceless. That being considered, it deserves 5+ stars.
Although Expericnce Hendrix has done a great job releasing material since they won Jimi's legacy a few years ago, this DVD, contrary to the CD version, was disappointing in its length. There are many songs missing. I owned the CDs first and will list my disappointments: (1) I desperately wanted to hear and see all of Message to Love and Hear my Train a Comin', two of Jimi's new songs as he broke away from the Experience. (2) I also wanted to see Spanish Castle Magic, Foxy Lady, Hey Joe and Lover Man, all not included on the DVD. (3) The order of the songs was jumbled on the DVD and I wanted to see the actual chronological order of the songs. (4) Many of Jimi's comments, some pretty interesting (a la those before Izabella for those who own the CDs), were totally cut out. (5) If it replaced another of the aformentioned left-out songs, I really did not need to hear Larry Lee being backed up be Jimi on Jam Back at the House. Considering they cut out Larry Lee's other songs from the CD I was amazed that this one even made it.
I guess I wanted a DVD identical to the CDs, which is not what this is. However, this is a must for any fan of rock music in general, but I felt I had to voice my completist complaints. Without a doubt, a must have.Jimi Hendrix - Live at Woodstock (1999) Overview

Syd Barrett - Under Review (1960) ReviewIs this DVD any good? Is there any new Syd Barrett news? Is it another re-hash? Yes on all counts. If you are at Amazon reading this review, then buy the DVD. If you are enough of a fan to get this far, you should own Under Review. If you are a Floyd fan just getting to know Syd's work, then you should also buy this DVD. Syd was much more than a founder of Floyd. A history lesson will only deepen your appreciation of the band. This is a good companion to the previous DVD release, but much more objective. Of special value is the timeline of his story. You get a better sense of how Syd and his music changed over the short period of time he was musically productive. You get perspective on just how precarious things were as early as Arnold Lane. You also get perspective on how functional he was as late as Barrett. The clips are historic and the analysis is pretty solid. In my humble opinion, there was never anything on Earth like Syd's music. Voodoo Child: The Jimi Hendrix Collection ReviewHas any artist been more shoddily treated than Jimi Hendrix when it when it comes to posthumously released CDs? Fortunately with the formation of the production company Experience Hendrix by surviving relatives, Hendrix's releases have vastly improved from the days of LPs like Crash Landing and Midnight Lightning. This latest 2-CD release is another welcome addition to the Hendrix catalog, including both familiar studio versions of classic songs like "Purple Haze," "The Wind Cries Mary," and "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)," along with alternate takes like "All Along the Watchtower," "Highway Chile" and "Stone Free." The last two taken for last year's excellent Jimi Hendrix box set.
Which raises the issue, how much of this material will be new to the die-hard fan. The quick answer is, probably not much. Only one song is listed as "previously unreleased," the live version of "Foxey Lady" taken from a 1970 concert in Maui less than two months before Hendrix's untimely death at 27. Five tracks from the live disc are listed as "previously unavailable," including "Fire," "Hey Joe" (both from a 1968 Winterland concert), "Red House," "Freedom" (from an Isle of Wight concert) and a nearly eight-minute version of "Wild Thing" from 1967's Monterey Pop Festival. Except for the three tracks just mentioned, all of the live material comes from 1969 and 1970. While liner notes author Kurt Loder sees this period as an era of decline--"the group seemed alarmingly played out," he writes--these live tracks leave the listener with the question "What if...?" Unfortunately, that question will stay unanswered. The best we can hope for is the continued release of quality Hendrix material like this for the next generation to discover and enjoy.
