The Animated Passion ReviewThe Animated Passion is exactly what parents of faith hope and expect it to be: Mel Gibson's Passion, minus the gore, and with greater emphasis on the Resurrection. Ironically, this Passion predates the R-rated one by several years.
We all know the story, so the questions for such a production are: Age appropriateness, tone, and overall quality. Our children are five and three, so we struggled with whether to show this to them or not. The five year old knows that "Jesus died for our sins" and "Lives in my heart." So, we tried. She cried through the saddest parts, but more in the way we adults did with Gibson's version--not out of trauma, but just utter sadness. Originally, we planned to show the Passion portion one night, and the Acension the next. However, for younger children, it is important that they see victory--or at least the Resurrection, after the crucifixion. We did not want them going to bed with Jesus having died and not yet risen! Bottom-line: Unless your child is mature and well-versed in the stories of Jesus, it's probably best to hold off on this one until seven or eight. Also, parents really need to watch this with their children, and be ready to answer questions.
The tone of this animation was balanced and appropriate. There was great sadness. No one category of people (i.e. Jews or Romans) were scapegoated. The story is not sugar-coated simply because it is for children. Yet, there is hope, and Jesus' suffering is mixed with his sense of purpose and determination.
The Animated Passion's quality was quite good as well. While this appears to have been produced by a smallish company, great care and thought went into to the work.
Recommendation: Parents will do well to show this to children seven and above. Five and six year olds might have the maturity and background to appreciate the Animated Passion. Viewers will find a movie of standard quality, but one done with care. There is a sacredness, hopefulness, and yet somberness that permeates the film. This is a definite rent recommendation--and a probable buy, since it is a story Christians want to hear again and again!The Animated Passion Overview

Sing Along Songs - Flik's Musical Adventure (2010) ReviewMy son is 15 months old and loves the Disney Sing Sing Along videos that feature the children singing. His favorite is Beach Party and I thought he would love the Animal Kingdom video. There is to much time between songs to keep his attention. Also, Flick gives short educational updates that break up the flow of the video. My friend's three year old daughter also found the video boring and I can't even give it away. In addition the quality of the photography involving lighting does not meet Disney's normally high standards. Baby Einstein - Baby's Favorite Places - First Words Around Town (2006) ReviewAs a counselor for families with young babies, I have had the opportunity to review a number of language programs (both sign and verbal) for preverbal babies and babies who are just beginning to verbalize.
As with Baby Wordsworth the production quality of this DVD is excellent, however the words and signs presented are not appropriate for either preverbal babies who are trying to communicate basic wants and needs or toddlers who are beginning to speak. Instead of offering words and signs such as eat, drink, milk, more, mommy, daddy, baby etc. - this program presents bank, florist, bakery, etc. Not only is the choice of words and signs questionable but the visual distinctions between scenes such as cafe, restaurant, and market is difficult for a baby to understand.
The format is also geared towards older children. Five words and signs are presented in rapid succession and then extended scenes for each word are shown. Then the same five words and signs are offered again by a child of four years or older. In addition, the signs themselves are difficult for young babies as most of the signs are combinations of more than one sign such as "ice cream" plus "store."
There are no babies signing or speaking in this production and no tutorial for parents of hearing babies who are teaching their babies to use sign language. I recommend the "My Baby Can Talk" series to teach either sign language or first spoken words to babies.Baby Einstein - Baby's Favorite Places - First Words Around Town (2006) OverviewA playful introduction to words and sign language -- my street to main street!-- Exposes babies to words and sign language-- Presents a fun way for parents and little ones to "go exploring"As babies turn one year old, they continue to develop their communication skills. Thomas & Friends: Calling All Engines ReviewThis is one of our most played DVDs, mainly because there are so many of my son's favorite characters crammed into the story. Thomas fans will be able to identify many of the trains, both steam and diesel, including Thomas, Lady, Diesel 10, Edward, Henry, Gordon, James, Percy, Toby, Harvey, Mavis, Diesel, Iron ‘Arry and Iron Bert, and more.
There are five catchy songs, including "Busy" which will have you humming all day, and for shorter attention spans there are short breaks in the action for cartoon challenges.
In this story, there is to be a new airport built on Sodor, which will bring in lots of visitors to the Island. Unfortunately, this also brings the Steam Engines into close contact with the Diesels, and before long the island is in chaos as train warfare breaks out. To compound matters, a storm hits the island, further delaying the work schedule.
With the vacation season plans headed for disaster, Thomas rallies the engines to work together and be really useful, but the real challenge will be to finish everything on time. A last minute emergency might put a damper on things, but maybe a little help from an unlikely source can save the day.
Entertaining and educational, this one is a must for any Thomas fan.Amanda Richards, March 1, 2006
