Deep Purple: Phoenix Rising (2011) ReviewWhen I heard about this DVD being readied for release, I couldn't wait for a chance to see what was going to be culled from the archives. As I did not opt for the CD/DVD combo package(I already have both the Japan and Long Beach gigs on disc), I simply ordered the sole DVD. The additional booklet that was included was a nice touch and although some of the footage has already been made available(via History, Hits and Highlights 68-76), I still find the finished product as a satisfying addition to the Mach IV story. Despite the fact that only Jon Lord and Glenn Hughes are featured for the present day recollection of this time period, they are very insightful within their contributions on the impact of Tommy Bolin's presence within the band at that particular time.
There is a bit too much rambling from Hughes about his cocaine addiction towards the middle of the disc, but it does offer basic reasons why the IV lineup was so short lived. There is an interesting anecdote to their trip to Jakarta that I wasn't aware of, and how sinister of a twist that happened to them in losing one of their bodyguards, on top of having difficulty leaving the country itself; pretty spooky stuff there!! I agree that the Rises Over Japan footage is certainly not one of Tommy's better moments, but the remastering of the performance is well done, nonetheless. I enjoy the track by track dissection of Come Taste the Band in the special features section of the disc as it gives more insight into the overall process of recording that album. For serious Purple fans, like myself, this a must have to add to the collection. And its certainly of interest to fans of Tommy Bolin as well. 4 starsDeep Purple: Phoenix Rising (2011) Overview
