Ten Thousand Points of Light: The 20th Anniversary (2010) ReviewThe eclectic reissue company Dust-to-Digital continues to amaze me with their offbeat releases (they issued the earliest known playable recording from 1865 as a single earlier this year!) and this DVD is no exception. The 30-minute - shot on VHS - documentary was made by director George King (whose short film Who's That Stranger I discovered last year) in 1980. King spent two Christmases visiting The Townsend Family in Decatur, GA to see their mind-boggling Christmas light display (and ELVIS collection!).He was there for the final year.
The film itself is quirky as we hear about the display from Raymond Townsend and his niece Gloria Stevens. There's an underlying story of Gloria's on-again off-again marriage and the "bought on time" ring given to her by her husband. You will laugh at the way King edits the comments from both of these folks but you can see that they are "real".
What puts this film - which was mostly a novelty - in perspective is the hour of bonus materials. First we have a full commentary track with King, Townsend and Stevens recorded in 2010. Then there are lengthy 2010 interviews with Townsend and Stevens (now remarried for the THIRD time) as well as her daughter (who appears in the film when she was about four years-old.
King's original film reminds me of Erol Morris' films about ordinary people doing quirky things.
Thanks to D-to-D for re-releasing this in an entertaining package (there is a 2 page leaflet of an interview with King included in the package too). This is a Christmas gift you can give that will not duplicate any other.

Ten Thousand Points of Light: The 20th Anniversary (2010) OverviewKitsch alert! Worshipper at the shrine of Elvis, fans of unabashed bad taste, followers of pop culture take note. Ten Thousand Points of Light is a wry, understated and terrifically funny look at the Townsends, a suburban Atlanta family who, every holiday season for eight years, transformed their Stone Mountain area brick ranch house into a meteoric blaze of Christmas lights. Known as both the Christmas House and the the Elvis House, the Townsend s home was visited yearly by vast numbers of people, many of whom viewed a trip to the land of a thousand tchotchkes as an annual pilgrimage.Linda Dubler, 1991
