Warrior (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) ReviewCharacter. It's the most important thing for a score to have. Not only must a score have character but it should be telling the story of the characters we are seeing on the screen. Mark Isham has always been able to infuse a great amount of human emotion into his scores and for Warrior he succeeds on that level. Isham crafts an emotionally intense and at times moving score. Pulsing strings make up the body of the score, but Isham adds lots of percussion and other textures.
The first track is called "Listen To The Beethoven" and it infuses lovely, lovely Ludwig Van's 9th symphony into this propulsive string based opening. I have to point out how wonderfully Isham structured the score. The track times are bulky and that's a great sign that the composer really made this score to blanket the film. We get some 9-minute and 7-minute tracks that really take us on the journey. The flow and overall execution is marvelous. The music fills up all the negative space and allows no "air". It becomes an emotional rush that builds and builds. Tracks like "Koba" are absolutely fantastic. Guitars provide all the rhythms in the score as to give audiences something to grasp on. Since the drama involves a martial arts aspect the score at times had a timeless and almost ancient feel to it. As the score takes us to the brothers' final fight it really becomes effective in giving a grand emotional hit.
Mark Isham does a superb job at balancing energy and emotion in this propulsive yet emotionally stirring score. It may take a minimalist approach at times, which I'm not a fan of, but the overall effect of the music is memorable. This is a very bold score and it may be the boldest we've heard from Isham. I was really surprised at how much of an effect the score had on me and I encourage everyone to check it out.Warrior (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) Overview
