The Town ReviewBen Affleck made his directorial debut with Gone Baby Gone. For his first film he got Harry Gregson-Williams to compose the score which would turn out to be his best work to date in my opinion. For Affleck's second film Harry Gregson-Williams tackled the scoring duties once more along with his friend and long time collaborator David Buckley. Both of these composers are no strangers to working as a team and the result is an incredible and cohesive score that is both atmospheric and moves with a unique percussive intensity. If you know Harry Gregson-Williams' style then this score will be no surprise to you. The score is full of his signature sounds and amazing blending of electronics and live instruments. The score consistently has a bubbling intensity that never really erupts but is broken up with emotional strings. The electronic percussion does give me an urban warfare vibe and at points feels like little splashes of Hans Zimmer's Black Hawk Down. While this is a crime thriller I do believe giving the music that warfare vibe adds another dimension to the story. Overall, the action cues never go over the top and move along very slowly creating a tense atmosphere.
The central theme of the film is a beautiful piano theme very similar in style to Gone Baby Gone's central theme. It appears in several variations throughout the score. For instance with a guitar in the track "Doug Reflects". This theme provides the anchoring point for the entire score and in the end is what we close the album with. Huge emotions strive from this simple melody and make the score even more effective.
This is a small score and Gregson-Williams and Buckley have managed to make it feel big. The simplicity in the melodies resonate the biggest emotions. The score is mostly atmospheric with a constant rising tension, but when the central theme is used it gives the score that essential grounding. This is a fantastic effort and is highly recommended especially if you loved Harry's solo effort on Gone Baby Gone. The Town Overview
